It’s a nice fragrance for sure. I like the opening pretty good, but as this dries down, it becomes a very straightforward vanilla, cinnamon and amber scent that reminds me quite a bit of Hugo Boss Bottled which I used to wear as a young man in the late 90s. In the end, this is too round and too pleasant to really capture my imagination and interest. And it feels like it is meant for a younger audience. Age 29 and lower is probably the sweetspot for this. So it is a miss for me in terms of buying a FB, but I can see this working beautifully for others.

A pine balm to soothe the traveller’s mind.
1899 is a bottled séance de relaxation channeled by the enlivening energy of pine needles and earthy iris, and the sweet calming sensation of tender vanilla and mild musk. It has a narcotic effect i am gladly addicted to.
Not in the same league as 1740, 1969 or Petroleum, but still excellent.

1899 opens with fresh and spicy notes of black pepper, juniper berry and bergamot. The heart is composed of orange blossom, iris and cinnamon. The sillage is warm and mixes vanilla, vetiver and amber. With 1899, Histoires de Parfums honors the American writer Ernest Hemingway, winner of the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1954. Hemingway was a man of action and reflection, multifaceted. According to the brand, the perfume is in his image: vibrant and raw. This fragrance is usually compared to Spice Bomb and there are undeniable similarities between the two fragrances but 1899 will be my favorite one. A very well composed perfume with a good quality price ratio. Thumbs up!

OMG!! I’m just receive my scentbird sample right now and I’m in love!! Sweet spicy and defensively unisex!! I want a full bottle and for sure my signature scent

ooh this is nice from the get-go. it starts with juniper, bergamot, amber and cinnamon and shortly after the vanilla peeks through. it reminds me of the leftover scent of spices in an old box (this is a good thing.) spicy but a little herbal, the sweetness of vanilla and amber rounds out the scent nicely and the vetiver adds a nice subtle woody element.

For once my affinity for the elements in the description translates to liking the fragrance itself. This might be my favorite from the Histoires de Parfums “discovery set.” Too often masculine-leaning unisex scents smell like men’s deodorant/ aftershave (or just ashtray and b.o.), on me, but here the spice, juniper, vetiver, and amber work well for a woman too. (The Hemingway name made me expect gunpowder, dog pee, cigars, and whiskey, but apparently he also liked champagne cocktails and White Ladies, so his tastes were less stereotypical than I realized.) It is warm, slightly gourmand, well balanced, and wearable.

The reviews I read here and on the internet got me and VOILA!
Finally – AWESOME alternative to SPICEBOMB.
I bought it blind and it arrived today based on comparisons to V & R. As such I don’t get JACKWINS comment that it is nothing like Spicebomb.
Spicebomb is close to one of the perfumes that I would rarely rate as poor and overrated for the masses. For me it is too much and despite my broad taste and experience actually gives me a headache.
Deep down I understood why it existed and why it would appeal to people. I was gifted a bottle(again!) with a shave balm – when I tried the shave balm which was softer and smoother – I got it! I went yeah I really like this and I do enjoy cinnamon but… damn the bottle just doesn’t work for me…
It is a much smoother slightly toned down version of Spicebomb Extreme and maybe a little fresher (the vetiver – which comes across a little minty for the first couple of hours). Full of cinnamon, pepper, spice and actually smells like orange blossom? at times giving a wafting impression of a tinge of sweet tobacco. It eventually dries down to a cinnamon with soft wood. Gorgeous scent. Awesome silage for four hours, seven hours later its still gives good waft whilst moving. I actually sprayed less than normal, 3 to neck a couple on my exposed arm and one that I walk into.
Extremely happy as todays deliveries turned out to be awesome blind buys (todays delivery also included Houbigant Duc De Vervin Extreme, Histoire 1828 and Acqua Di Parma Cedro Di Taormina).
I accidentally ordered a large bottle but that turns out to be a pleasant error.
    Happy Smelling

I don’t subscribe to the notion of seasonal fragrances, instead choosing to wear whatever I like any time of the day or night, year round. That said, I don’t deny there are fragrances that can become unwearable in the high summer heat; Spicebomb and Man In Black are certainly two such fragrances. What I love about 1899, and what prompted me to acquire a full bottle, is its wearability. The quality of the ingredients and sophistication of the composition make 1899 wearable, with a light touch, even on scorching and humid days. It’s rare to find an oriental for a man, or any oriental for that matter, that is truly wearable year round and for any occasion. There’s no doubt it’s true that if you simply want the approximate smell of 1899 you could get Man In Black for a fraction of the price, but there’s no comparison when it comes to wearability and performance, and not just in terms of longevity; 1899 exudes quality through the dry down, hours after MiB and Spicebomb reveal their plain synthetic heart.

Love this so much I bought a bottle.
This is blended so perfectly and I can smell so many notes. Not linear at all! It’s deliciously warm and comforting. You won’t be able to stop smelling yourself. This and Ambre 114 from this company are my favorites.
    A spicy, sensual, perfect perfume!

I LOVE THIS JUICE!!! But it smell nothing like Spicebomb. If you like a spicey-freshy you will love this. The combo of vanilla, amber and bergamot are brilliant. Its a wonderful office scent. Not too heavy, but just enough to project a good 3 feet for a few hours. Then it settles down a bit. You continuously get waft’s of it throughout the day, letting you know that its still there. You can wear this casually or dressed up, and it will garner you compliments (at least it does me). Its great for fall, spring, even summer evenings/nights. Hell, I would wear it in the dead of summer, but I dont give a sh*t though.
1899 is my favorite from the house, with Ambre 114 running a close second.
LOVE IT, LOVE IT, LOVE IT!!!

You’re a lumberjack in a forest near the Pacific coast, cutting down trees. You’re chewing sweet and spicy cinnamon gumdrops, daydreaming about Christmastime with the family. You briefly wonder if you could end the day early to stop and enjoy a peppered steak on your way home. 1899 by Histoires de Parfums.

Fragrance -1899 Hemingway Histoires de Parfums
    Bottle from – 2015
1899 Hemingway opens with a bit sparkling, fresh, woody, green and salty bergamot fused with juniper and with a hint of pepper. You might feel like you’ve stepped into an enchanted forest. As time goes by,during mid development, orange blossom and iris comes into the game and adds a bit romantic floral symphony with a wisper of warm cinnamon.
This all leads into a well blended base with dominant vanilla and juniper fused with moderatly sweet and spicy amber and with a nice touch of green vetiver. It has similarities to Spicebomb by Viktor&Rolf but 1899 took a different approach.I would say a more profound approach.
    Longevity – 8/10(8+ hours)
Silage/Projection – 7/10(moderate projection and silage for the first 2-3 hours)
Weather – best in early spring, autumn and winter.
    Age – 23+
    Compliments – 8/10
    Scent – 8/10
Main notes according to me – vanilla, juniper, cinnamon, pepper, iris, bergamot.
The drydown is a bit spicy, creamy and moderatly sweet and I get some -vanilla,juniper,orange blossom, amber and vetiver.
    Emotions -enchanted forest,comforting,sophisticated,warm, alluring,sensual.
Occasion -perfect for autumn and winter nights out and semi-formal event.

This and Pure Havane are very similar smelling on my skin. Idk why but it’s true … I admit 1899 has a better silage and it opens and folds slot more than Pure Havane but honestly that’s all bells n whistles. I don’t own 1899 but I do own Pure Havane so imma stick with Pure Havane.

I’m not a big fan of 1899 on its own. To me, this is an oriental woody fragrance, unisex leaning more toward masculine. On me it starts off as a warm, spicy, woody fragrance; cinnamon and vanilla with a slight hint of needles (juniper, I’m guessing). It soon transforms as iris comes to the forefront. Soon, it becomes creamier as amber makes itself known. At the end, it’s all amber and vetiver, with the spices singing backup. All in all, not a bad fragrance. It’s really quite nice, but it doesn’t “wow” me.
That being said, layered with 1804 it becomes decidedly more feminine and really brings out the fruitiness in the 1804, while toning down its sweetness. The combination of the two is really quite enchanting.

Spicebomb? I don’t get it personally…This yields a powdery/floral aspect that’s present in many of their feminine offerings that rubs me the wrong way. 1725 and 1828 are leagues beyond this in terms of respectable masculine fragrances. Try it for yourself, as I seem to hold an unpopular opinion.

    This is complex and nice!
All the notes listed are are definitely present, I get the cinnamon right away, as well as the juniper, pepper and vanilla. Overall a peppery scent.
This reminds me a lot of bond no 9 cooper square. Would I buy this? Maybe, especially if the price is right. Histoires never disappoints.

I agree with other reviewers who compare AdP 1899 with Spicebomb and MIB.
1899 is more refined than Spicebomb and much fresher than MIB. It does not lack in longevity or sillage.
These qualities make 1899 a very versatile wear for any occasion and season.

Mmmm, from the initial spray I thought ‘ginger bread!’. I knew I’ve smelled something similar and then it hit me, it’s definitely Spicebomb. However, once this dries down a bit, the sweetness goes down a notch and stays smoother than it’s Viktor & Rolf counterpart. Definitely enjoyable and easily wearable. However, due to it’s somewhat generic nature, I would not recommend it. Spicebomb can easily replace this, as the similarity is uncanny. Furthermore, it’s cheaper as well. Do sample this and compare it to Spicebomb side by side, then decide if this deserves a price twice as high as V&R.

  24. :

    3 out of 5

As a lover of Spicebomb I can definitely see the comparison. What I love most about this one is how its not as biting as Spicebomb, its a tad bit sweeter, and dare I say, creamier. It also doesn’t smell as synthetic.
A very warm, inviting, and Spiced beauty!

A warm scent, reminiscent of an old, antiqued library that you’ve never set foot in. Really really good, but just short of fantastic, a comforting scent appropriate for the fall. Initially it’s slightly orange with sweet vanilla, but melts into a musky, masculine, very aged aroma. 8/10

This reminds me of Bvlgari Man In Black, but not as good.
SPICEBOMB: Sweeter than both BMiB and 1899.
BVLGARI MAN IN BLACK: More masculine, stronger and more luxurious than 1899
1899: Stronger and more complex and masculine than Spicebomb, but thinner and subtler than BMiB. It’s missing the rich, dark, manly note that makes BMiB so intoxicating. But I do NOT think 1899 is feminine. It’s definitely a masculine scent. So don’t worry about it being ‘girly,’ it isn’t that way at all.

  28. :

So many reviews of a fragrance inevitably compare that fragrance to spicebomb. That seems to be the most stated comparison in reviews that I have read… “It smells just like spicebomb”… even if the fragrance in question shares only a note or two with spicebomb. To my nose, several of the reviews that I have read this comment on are not similar to spicebomb at all. That has trained me to be very skeptical of this claim. It is like the boy that cried wolf.
Having said that, I am wearing a sample of 1899 today and I have to admit it is VERY similar to SB. Notice I said similar, it is not exactly the same, but it is the closest thing to SB that I have sampled so far.
1899 is like an older, wiser brother of SB. Meaning that 1899 has the same overall feel of SB, but a bit more mellow. 1899 is not as loud or brash as SB. Making this a great choice for times when limiting projection and silage makes sense. Think close quarters in an office for example, or on a sales call if you are a sales person.
As I said, a lot of fragrance reviews say… “This smells just like spicebomb!” So, do not take my word for it, go try a sample yourself and see how close it is to spicebomb on your skin.

Call me basic, but I judge how great a perfume is one me based on compliments. Whenever I wear this even people who don’t care about perfumes always notice the smell. FYI – I am a female, also I love spicebomb but I think it is overrated to say that they are identical. It is very similar to TF Tobacco and Vanille – it is absolutely a Unisex. Ladies wear it and trust me, you will get noticed! You can try our a sampler at sephora or start wth $35 travel size. I feel that I found my new signature scent. If you are interested in my taste feel free to check out my profile.

  30. :

Is it similar to Spicebomb and Bvlgari Man in Black? Yes.
    Is it identical? No.
Will most people smell much difference between them? No.
Will people react differently at them? Yes.
Let me explain why seemingly contradictory statements aren’t contradictions at all.
Spicebomb is brash and loud, and with its enormous sillage and projection could easily irritate many people, so it would make great casual night out perfume, but terrible office or business meeting choice. MIB would be better suited as dressed up evening event, cocktail party, or business dinner between 3 of them. More sophisticated and tamid 1899 makes good choice as business meeting or Winter/Fall office perfume. Later is the case when more modest sillage and projection make it better choice for specific need.
I can easy understand why many people would prefer Spicebomb or MIB over it (not only because of price, though you can have both SM and MIB for $$ of one 1899). Remember, many of people who hate SB or MIB, wouldn’t dislike 1899, or might even like it.
In the end, whether those 3 perfumes would be redundant or not, and which of them will be better for you, depends on which occasions you planning to use them. For me, since I do like this type of scents, I have and use all 4 of them (Spicebomb Extreme being 4th).
I should also add that, unlike SB, 1899 still great and wearable in Spring and even Summer (nights or not too humid days).
    Scent 9/10
    Longevity 8/10
    Projection 7/10
    Sillage 6/10
    Versatility 8/10

  31. :

If you own Spicebomb and are curious about this one, make sure to order a sample first. As mentioned in many of the comments below, Hemingway is very similar to Spicebomb and many people wouldn’t be able to tell the difference between the two.
The top notes are virtually identical. Juniper and Cinnamon dominate the first four to five hours of development, but after that, nothing else really happens. A soft vanilla enters the mix for a short time, but it quickly fizzles out.
Spicebomb, though unapologetically synthetic, would be my choice between the two. Better development, nuclear projection, sillage and longevity.

I’ve been sampling this off and on this Fall and I adore it. I love the warm spice and sweetness. I find it a gorgeous, cozy Fall scent. But am I crazy or does it have a serious black licorice note? There isn’t one listed but I swear I get licorice.

Tried this one finally and, just pretty disappointed.
It’s a complete doppelganger for HuitiemeArt’s Liqueur charnelle and I really don’t dig the ‘brite’ ringing floral or maybe gin-booze like accord in here too.
It just cuts any thick, syrupy sweetness (that I do get on the eventual drydown) and stops it from being an ambrosial comfort scent to more, dare I say designer-like vibe.
It’s even cooling, oddly, it seems it’s the juniper and pepper accords mixing and makes a ‘minty’ off-note.
I feel some lemon then the ‘brite (hint of mint)’ accord quickly kicks in and then the spices (cinammon) start that familiar Huitieme theme.
A pretty large sucker-punch for the longish wait to try another hype-machine. Sorry.

I just got a sample of this and I am OBSESSED. It smells like a better, stronger version of Byredo Gypsy Water. Bergamot in the opening and then fir, vetiver, cinnamon, some vanilla. Might get rid of my Gypsy Water and replace it with this.
Much stronger and lasts far lomger, as well.

Aquatic, citric rosy vanilla musk. Discreet, pleasant, classic, transparent, slightly powdery and unspecific. I can sense the mentioned details in the composition only at close range. All in all they don’t play a formative role in the general performance of the perfume. If you like it shy and vanilla – which is probably a rare combination – you will enjoy this and more by HdP.

A light-hearted spicy oriental that’s invigorates the senses. An herbal, peppery opening leads to a light floral heart and a warm vanilla and amber dry down. Totally unisex, long lasting (over 10 hours) and moderate silage. A mood-lifting fragrance that’s easy to wear in warm weather.

It smells like christmas! Since I wear christmas sweaters year round and drink mint mochas almost everyday, this is a scent for me. I swear I can smell christmas ham baking and piles of cinnamon desserts.
However, it does smell a lot like spicebomb. And while 1899 has some nuances that I prefer over Spicebomb; I’m not sure if I want to smell like every other person out there.

  40. :

My goodness. This is so amazing. It does remind me of spice bomb and Huitieme Art Liquer Charnelle but this is by far the best as the spice has been taken out or reduced majorly! I own them all and this is how they are rated to me
    1899 > Liquer Charnelle > spicebomb
Of course spice bomb is the synthetic spice mess with no longevity, but still is a great smell. Huitieme art killed that composition and smells amazing and lasts a long time, then there is this perfect perfect scent. It’s everything I look for in a fragrance, it’s niche and it’s oh so amazing.

Fresh, zesty opening over a refined woody base. Leans a bit to the masculine side with all those aromatic notes but the iris and orange blossom gives it an almost Guerlain-like feel, especially after the juniper calms down. It works amazingly well! As it dries down it loses some of it’s charm but it’s still a pleasant, cola-like oriental. A very wearable “light” oriental. Crisp but soft, zesty as well as sweet, light-hearted but still mature. Another wonderful offering from a great house.

Scent – juniper berries, cinnamon, iris & vanilla.
Season/Time of Day – I prefer to use this one in the warmer months, day or night.
Projection – I did get noticed, it garners compliments.
    Longevity – I get 8hrs consistently.

Love the initial distinct juniper scent; every time I see a fragrance with the word “gin” in it, I am hoping to smell exactly this. Dries down to a nice warm amber. To me, this is like “delicious boyfriend smell in a bottle” but definitely wearable by women.

When I first tested this, I thought it was fresh and herbal smelling. However, after about half an hour, it started to smell familiar. It took me a few minutes, but I realized it reminds me of Bath & Body Works Juniper Breeze. Granted, it’s a much more natural and high quality scent, but still, the dry down is similar. I like it a lot, but probably won’t buy a bottle.

This morning I gave a good try to this fragance before going to work.
After a few moments I was somehow shocked, that nice cinnamon that filled the aire was quite familiar, oddly enough the day after I had worn Spicebomb and (you know how explosive the handgrenade is…) I thought that my senses had soaked on it so I checked here in Fragrantica and, not without relief, I read that it was not only me but other fragance lovers have had a similar experience.
Don’t get me wrong, this fragance is lovely, very well crafted and a must for cinnamon lovers (honestly is the note I feel the most), the only downside for me is that I already have another fragance that reminds me of it.
Furthermore, when going a little deeper I would say there’s a subtle change since in this one cinnamon is mixed with Juniper and Vanilla and in the other one there’s pepper in a higher degree, that gives 1899 a different hint, milder I’d say.
Sorry for too much Spicebomb talking, but for the personal experience I’ve had it was necessary to mention it, this is the first fragance I’ve tried from Histoires de Parfums, I’m looking forward the next one!
EDIT: About six hours later is still working as skin fragance, it feels subtle but really nice cinnamon vanilla aroma.

Hmmmm the first one I’m reviewing from my discovery set. Not super impressed with this. I can firstly say this goes absolutely nowhere in hot weather. I wore it on a recently holiday and it vanished off of my skin within the hour.
I get a balanced combination of cinnamon, pepper, grassy tones and something slightly balmy from this when it’s wet.
It smells more masculine that feminine for sure. The whole thing is warmed up by vanilla and amber, which stop the spices from becoming too feisty. The juniper gives a herbal edge to it also, but it’s a soft herbal edge.
When it dries it sweetens up, and the vanilla/amber combination washes over the anything that’s spiky and keeps it calm and pleasant. That’s all it is though…pleasant.
It’s not something I would buy at all, I feel like I’ve smelled it before.

J’adore!

The dominating cinnamon note makes one instantly think of Spicebomb when smelling 1899. It is, in fact, difficult (for me, at least) to separate them within my nose’s mind.
1899 is somewhat deeper- and richer-smelling than Spicebomb – I am still figuring out how and why that is. It is difficult to pick out many other notes than cinnamon, but vanilla and pepper occasionally appear, making this the warm spicy scent as mentioned previously by others. Performance appears to be good; I sampled 1899 along with some other scents and it is the one that is catching my nose the most.
The original ‘Spicebomb’. Histoires de Parfums is a solid, reasonably priced brand with many exciting offerings, in my eyes.

Very comfortable, sensual and lovely smell. Very high quality of ingridients for a resonable price. Vanille gives the warmth combined with the well alluring cinnamon, juniper gives a touch of bitterness and interest, and iris smooth it. Good for any occasion, I would wear it in fall and winter.

On the opening you can smell bergamot and lots of cinnamon which is soon joined by vanilla and juniper.
It’s a very soft spicy scent which does not really change from the dominating cinnamon and vanilla. Here and there you can smell the juniper and a soft floral note.
1899 is very pleasant with average longevity but it’s not very exciting and it is let down by poor projection.
To sum up a pleasant subdued soft spicy cinnamon and vanilla fragrance that just needs that ooommphh to make it more exciting.

I don’t know much about Spicebomb, but this is just spicy gorgeousness! I’m not good at getting each and every note but I can say this; I’m very, very picky and especially when it comes to my beloved orientals and this one is marvelous! Nothing masculine, harsh or screechy on me at all! Very unique, fairly strong ” kissing cousin ” of Coco, and the like… I’m testing from a large decant sent by a generous friend and really enjoy every phase! Just gorgeous and I’m saving the last few mls for this winter .

A strong fruity spice, plenty of cinnamon but not harsh; although no fruit note is listed, it’s in there – apple possibly . After reading that this is “Hemingway” (it was a blind sample) my nose insists there are tobacco and whisky notes. Now, is that the power of suggestion, or a genius alchemical mix of notes which suggest those things? That’s entirely possible, this House turns out some wonderful niche scents, very creative, imaginative and well-made. It’s not for me (fruity spice is not my thing) but I can say that it’s very high quality stuff, lasts well, and if fruity spice is your thing – it’s an absolute must-have. Many hours on, the vanilla and amber team up with the cinnamon on a soft drydown, which is pleasant and making me hungry for gingerbread. Recommended.

apple comes first with cinnamon. then mastich vanilla cigars and caramel. then neroli and more and more. development keeps on for hours. what a poem in a bottle!!! way too classy!!! longevity is perfect but sillage is moderate. state of the arts things should be polite and discrete.
warm and calming potion. treat yourself like a king. put this on and go for a dreamy nightsleep.
    Perfection!!!!!!

I’m a sucker for juniper and I adore Ernest Hemingway so I knew I had to try this. 1899 turns out so perfect that I have to write a quick blurb to praise it.
This perfume is centred around couple of drops of fresh sweet vanilla essence dripping onto a bundle of cinnamon sticks and juniper branches. It’s spicy and sweet, but also very aromatic. 1899 dries down to a sweetened vetiver nuance with rest of the notes tucked in the background to lift 1899 through its 8-hour life. The sillage is moderate turning soft, but warm temperature amps up the trail pretty well.
I find this a very suitable scent for spring time and summer evenings, and although the dry down does lean masculine (which is why I ain’t wanting a FB for now) I still think this a good unisex fragrance for girls who like neutral fragrances. Kudos to Histoires de Parfums for such a wonderful creation.

I absolutely love the marketing concept of Histoires de Perfumes. 1899 was a real eye opener for me. A really well composed, relatively unique, high quality fragrance at a good price point with limited availability.
Identifying scents with historical figures is nothing less than genius. Personally, I think far too much emphasis is put on the absolute fr
