Description

At perfume exhibition in Milan – Esxence 2015, Xerjoff presented for the first time his collection of three perfumes dedicated to 150th anniversary of unification of Italy and is inspired by wealth, beauty and heritage that this country possesses. The collection of XJ 1861 encompasses three fragrances XJ 1861 Renaissance, XJ 1861 Zefiro and XJ 1861 Naxos each of which provides a part of beautiful Italy: Renaissance celebrates this period in Italy, Naxos Sicily, while Zefiro celebrates eternal Rome!

XJ 1861 Renaissance provides a luminous bouquet of aromas enchanting us with freshness of citrusy presence of tangerine, Calabrian bergamot, lemon and petit grain. The heart of the composition is transparent and floral, composed of Bulgarian rose and lily of the valley, with added dynamics of cold mint. The base contributes to depth and created the body of the composition with woody shades of patchouli, cedar, amber and musk to round up the composition.
XJ 1861 Renaissance was launched in 2011.

This is sort of unisex. But, I would be way more pleased smelling this on a woman than on a man passing by me. Such a lovely, delicate citrus. Not on my to buy list, but nonetheless a great spring/summer scent.

Class in a bottle, one of the few Citrusy scents that does not smell sporty. If you compare a lime with this in the drydown, you would not know which is which. Exquisite and refined, definetely lasting 10-12h in hot summer days with moderate to good projection in the first 6 hours, at least it is what I get. High price tag though (around 180 Euros in a hotel in Barcelona). 9/10

Realistic citrus smell in the opening. To me it is too sharp and bitter.
It softens in the drydown and becomes a very discrete scent.
Overall it is nice and perfectly suited for the summer.
    Very clean and polite.
But once again, is it worth the Xerjoff pricetag … ?

I am so glad I have tried it as a ample on my quest for a great citrus summer scent. After reading and hearing rave reviews about it I expected a masterpiece and…I didn’t like it at all. It smells very off-putting to me to the point that I not only don’t want to smell like this myself but would also run away from any man who smells like this. I can’t even make myself to open this sample again. My husband didn’t like it either. A great reminder that fragrances are very personal experience.

Heavenly citrus fragrance. Current favorite to be the next bottle in my collection. The comment about Xerjoff’s 1861 Renaissance vs. Creed’s Bois Du Portugal makes me very curious to compare them before making a decision!

Exquisite fragrance with many layers. What I think I enjoy most about 1861 Renaissance is that it is like a journey through seasons: spring and later summer/early fall all in one. Opens with a very green springlike freshness reminiscent of Guerlain’s Homme Intense. After an hour, it takes an almost 180 degree turn toward this subtly sweet ambery/patchouli musk that is utterly intoxicating. Evokes an image of a September evening dinner on the patio with friends and live music. I love it.

This scent is phenomenal! It’s so unique in my opinion. I layered this with Molecule 01…daaaaaamn! OMG the compliments…I was actually complimenting myself! Individually they easily stand their own ground. M1 maybe not so much on some skin types but together it’s something indescribable! Just the feedback I’ve received! Def worth a try! 1861 believe it or not stayed pretty linear on me…the M1 just made it last longer and added such a sexier interesting type of scent!

The opening is phenomenal, but fleeting – it’s a perfectly blended mojito that takes me to a posh rooftop bar in Miami overlooking the ocean. Unfortunately, the dry down gives me an almost cloying anise / synthetic mint vibe. I wanted to love this one, but couldn’t.

Sorry, not a full review yet… anyone else picking up on fennel or anise? I really like this a lot. Perhaps it is the mint that is throwing my nose off, but I am getting fennel.
Really refreshing and natural smelling. Just sprayed my sample, so need to give it some time.

Today the unthinkable happened. i was moving my frag cupboard into another room in the house. As fate would have it, I dropped my bottle of 1861 – despite the fact that it was a carpetted area, it shattered it into a million pieces! WHY? WHY? WHY? Why can’t it have been a bottle of cool water or Fahrenheit – something that could easily be replaced? Absolutely loved this smell.
RIP Renaissance – the best citrus opening ever!
    🙁
PS: that room now smells heavenly!!

Ok, according to me this Xerjoff is all about a nice citrus bouquet, fennel, sage, mint, a hint of pine soap and patchouli.
Yes, its a nice fragrance but its very heavy on the aromatic and spicy rather than my definition of green.
This Xerjoff vaporizes within a hour on my skin, wich most fragrances does so my rewiev might differ from the average ones.
    To summarize this review:
    1. It has strong aromatic and spicy notes that according to me, is more prominent than the citrus one.
    2. The prize – i ask my self: is the hefty prize tag worth it? So sample this before buying a full size, because its quite special.

A very nice and strong citrus scent which smells amazingly natural.
Lasts at least 8 hrs. I don’t see women wearing this, I think it is masculine.

I received a sample of this with a recent purchase.
The initial spray WOW’d me. It’s exactly the type of opening I really like in a scent; unique citrus, fresh and crisp. Almost immediately though, the scent started to get herbal and savory, which wasn’t bad at all really.
The more time went on, the aroma reminded me of the left-behind smell of Simple Green cleaner. In fact when I was wearing this around the house, I had forgot I was wearing it and thought I had smelled Simple Green, it baffled me because I actually haven’t bought that cleaner in years.
I want to be clear that I’m not saying this cologne directly smells like Simple Green, but the drydown does remind me of what a room smells like after mopping with it. Not a terrible cologne by any means, I wished that fresh citrus opening hung on longer, or maybe more lemon would boost that. Glad to have tried, definitely would not buy.

Renaissance opens with one of the most beautiful citrus chord i have encountered. Sparkling bergamot brightened by lemon and with a touch of green bitterness from petit grain.

After a short while the citrus opens up to make room for a fresh minty greenness, and in the background a warm, silently sweet and, for me, unidentifiable floral chord is doing a great job to unify the composition.

Traces of the citrus chord stays present for a few hours while the musky amber base fills out more and more of the olfactive space. The dry down is very skin close but Amber and Musk is delicately interwoven with Patchouli. I would just love to have some more sillage to it.

Xerjoff Renaissance is beautiful and extremely well balanced all the way from the top to the dry down. The only drawback is that, on my skin, sillage becomes very soft already after one or two hours.

Xerjoff 1861 is the undisputed Princess of Summer fragrances.
It was first launched in 2011 but in 2015 it became part of the 1861 collection. The line was launched to celebrate the 150th anniversary of the unification of Italy in 1861. The fragrance was renamed Renaissance and the other two are Naxos and Zefiro.Renaissance and Naxos are my favourites.
Xerjoff 1861 Renaissance is Citrus aromatic scent. It is a beautifully blended mixture of juicy citrus, mint, musk, amber and woody notes. Its performance is impressive for a citrus based fragrance.
The price is high (RRP £155) although 1861 Renaissance can be found at lower prices. A less pricey alternative, albeit not cheap on quality, is Acqua Decima by Eau D’Italie. The latter is the raw sibling whilst 1861 is much sophisticated.
A must try at the very least. Sergio Momo, we salute you!

Wow! This is the second Xerjoff fragrance that I’m sampling, and they both smell natural and realistic. They might be the most realistic notes I’ve ever smelled in perfumes.
1861 Renaissance is a very good realistic bitter sharp citrus/mint scent for the summer. It’s certainly unisex, and it’s for anyone who wants something nice for those days in the hottest summers when you can’t stand any other scent. It certainly should be sampled first; it’s not for everyone.
On my skin and to my nose, Lemon, bergamot, cedarwood, and mint are the most prominent notes, and I just gets hints of lily of the valley, tangerine or musk. I don’t get amber and rose. My only complaint is that a few times, in the opening and the heart of the fragrance, I felt like it smells a little like bug spray. It’s a very bitter scent, and even though it has a soft underlying sweetness, it can get tricky. Longevity and sillage are both moderate on me.

Citrus and bergamote done right. What a fragrance. Xerjoff – you are to be commended for making an outstanding fragrance.

  28. :

    5 out of 5

I never set high expectations with Citruses until it’s coming from Xerjoff. Renaissance comes across as a sharp complex citrus fragrance. The opening is subdued lime-bergamot for me with soft hints of petit grain which here smells like a half-volley Neroli unlike Nio. The heart is definitely soaked herbal mint leaves and a touch of sour lemon with a sweet powdery musty Amber becoming more prominent as time goes by cutting through the refreshing first half. Once the Amber shows up its more like a semi oriental fragrance which has the Signature Guerlain Amber. The complexity could be a serious like or a dislike. Overall a nice deviation from the linear sparkling citruses with top notch quality and superb performance. Don’t expect a crisp mint like P. Roma’s Ichnvsa which also has bittersweet fig. Unisex. 8.5/10.

  29. :

    4 out of 5

A very nice fragrance indeed. To my nose the mint is subtle and helps soften the citrus notes, preventing them from being too sharp, whilst still smelling completely natural. This is the first fragrance I’ve sampled from the house of Xerjoff, and it certainly won’t be the last.

I love this. Very unisex so girls dont miss out. One of the best citrus/mint fragrances around and best of all long lasting. Worth every penny. A fresh yet creamy citrus/mint beauty. Nothing harsh or piecing. The petit grain and lily of the valley add extra freshness.
Yes, there is some patch and amber but they are low key. There is just enough sweetness to create perfection. Soft creaminess from some musk and extra longevity from the wood notes.
Good longevity and sillage. Definitely in my top 5 citrus/mint fragrances.

Got this in the autumn of 2016 from a store in Barcelona (hotel Arts to be more accurate). To be honest, I don’t know if bergamot smells more natural, or this juice. It lasts good, around 8h, and for sure is one of the best citrusy out there, both quality and performance.

  32. :

    5 out of 5

    Nice but not Niche
I bought a 10ml decant, here are my observations:
First half is like the top notes of Guerlain Homme L’eau(that should be lime, not lemon in the note pyramid) and last half is the base notes of Concentre d`Orange Verte Hermes with that ambery drydown( not better or worse in any department: Quality/artistry/ performance, there is only a minor difference which I call a Kurkdijanian approach in niche perfumery, a kind of pallid and over-trimmed [aristocratic?!] representation of a concept ).
The problem that I have with niche perfumery is that 90 percent of it’s releases are just rehashing of designer perfumes with so minor an upgrade that makes them superfluous. This is a nice juice, high quality and all, but I believe it should be priced just a tad more than a top designer perfume, like a Guerlain, a Hermes, chanel or a Dior.

Got mine today after reading all these reviews… its amazing and I am not to big on fresh fragrances but the quality of ingredients is undeniable… that cant be said for the quality of my particular bottle 🙁
Every-time i spray it a bit of the liquid comes from underneath the sprayer and runs on the bottle so annoying 🙁 anyone knows if there is anything i can do to try and resolve?

1861 has the best mint note I’ve ever smelt, and it’s, to my nose, the most dominant note in this fragrance. It smells exactly like crushed Egyptian mint leaves, with a touch of bergamot and lemon. It develops over its 6-8 hour longevity to a more rounded, musky/ambery drydown. Simple, but stellar; Lovely stuff.

  35. :

A fabulously perfect citrus! Amazingly good! The best one I’ve ever smelt. Truly truly marvellous – I love it! So refreshingly vibrant and uplifting. Too gorgeous to describe! Wow!

  36. :

    3 out of 5

Citrus done right. Fresh and green with a very pleasing squirt of tangerine to take the edge off, this is not nose-burning. Two references that come up in my head are Burberry London and L’Ambre des Merveilles, along with Eau de Rem. Essentially I feel like if you layered those you’d get something somewhat close to this.

Xerjoff really outdid their-self with this frag! You can really smell the individual notes, lemon and bergamot right off when you first spray it. Me personally I don’t get much mint.
After about 1 hour the lemon and bergamot fall into the background and the flowery notes come more dominate. The middle notes last from 2-3 hours on my skin.
After you get a flowery, citrus, musk as the dry down. Which is absolutely sublime!
I purchased this frag as a decant. But the first time I sprayed this on I knew I was going to purchase a bottle.
This is a great frag for work, dressed up, sophisticated days, and dates!
I would highly recommend this frag to anyone!!
    Overall: 10/10
    Longevity: 9/10 (9-11 hours)
Sillage: 8.5/10 (It does leave a sizable scent trail- estimated 5-6 feet behind you)

Wow. A very, very very natural citrus smell. I must say I enjoy this better than Xerjoff Nio as its not as sharp smelling. This is perfect for warm weather. Citrus fragrances don’t lost very long in general, but this composition is at the top of the list in that category.
    Smell 10/10
    Longevity 8/10
    Overall 9/10
I highly recommend this, get a sample

When it comes to Bergamot, hardly there are any Houses which can beat Xerjoff.
This one is abstract perfumery at its best. Like an Impressionist Painting, it creates the overall image of a Lemon Tree at its full Bloom.
It starts with Zesty, sweet, juicy and green, but never earthy citruses, like smelling lemon leaves and lemons together, in a super clean white surrounding. The tartness never over exposes itself, but remains very creamy.
The mint develops after 15 minutes, giving the structure a freeziness. The tartness and sweetness turns into bitter citrus, but still is very fresh. The mint overtakes the citruses. The mint is not like mouth freshener but is very natural smelling.
At Dry Down the amber kicks itself in, giving an ambery sweetness. The citruses return very dry, almost powdery here. It ends keeping a lingering musk behind.
I find this perfume very difficult to describe. It doesnot reminds me of anything, which really co exists in Mother Nature, but it is like the best ingredients of Mother Nature creating a totally beautiful abstract form.
The only thing I can describe about it, is, it’s “NATURALLY GORGEOUS”.
    Sillage: Moderate
Longevity on My Skin: Approx 12 Hours
Longevity on Fabric: Almost 1 Day
Occasion: Very Versatile, Wear it anywhere. It is sure to comfort your mind. Personally I find it Immensely Romantic, almost like a bold (masculine?) Poetry.
    Rating: 9.5/10

It’s not a cologne version as much as a citrus minty fresh fragrance. It is kind of a heavy citrus fragrance and more of lemons and limes, and some of cedar maybe and bit of musc but quite hidden to add some dark base to the fragrances.
It is quite good for summer time but we need to consider the price.

  44. :

    3 out of 5

It’s pretty good, but smells a bit dated. Not for me…

  45. :

    3 out of 5

Oh dear. I feel like I got ripped off. Citrus peel in the opening. A classic cologne zing with a bit of mint. There a zillion colognes out there and I cannot justify this pricetag. Not even for the snazzy bottle.

  46. :

    3 out of 5

I would be very disappointed if this is anything like the linear smelling Eau d’orange verte. For the price of it, I would expect more.

  47. :

    5 out of 5

starts off with a strong lemon zest that dances around the line of foody and cleaner. The mint gives the entire composition a fresh, earthy feel and helps round out the sharpness of the lemon which keeps it from actually smelling like cleaner. The fragrance transitions from an airy summer time fragrance to a warm fall time fragrance as the powdery amber just pummels everything into submission. Renaissance becomes very thick as time goes on and has two different personas. Has good longevity as well. Not my favorite of the fresh collection… Nio is more my taste.

  48. :

    5 out of 5

An herbal combination of the highest quality citrus and mint over a white floral and amber heart composed with surprising density and boasting excellent projection and longevity. There is no doubt that Renaissance is of a superb quality, as it kind of wows you with its opening in terms of realism and a very live, vivid freshness. The most important question here is whether or not you love the way it smells. I’m still sort of undecided at this point, as I initially enjoy it, but after a while something about the lily-of-the-valley and petitgrain start to grate on my nerves. It’s a personal bias, as I’ve never been a huge fan of white florals other than a well done iris note or clean neroli. And due to Renaissance’s excellent projection and longevity, if there’s something you don’t like about it, unfortunately, it’s going to hang around. Certainly a very good fragrance with undeniable class, I kind of hope I come around to 1861 upon further wearings and open my palate to its dimension of white floral notes which I’ve always found somewhat challenging. Still, an absolute thumbs up and highly recommended for sampling, Renaissance wears best in semi-formal situations during the warmer months of the year.

  49. :

    5 out of 5

Great disappointment personaly for me. My favorite citruses run away in few minutes, or rather they hide away from me in amber fume. I do feel a crispy minty note but all in all it is too soft for me because of amber. I think I should write it here for other citrus-admirers – they may crave for this perfume like me and make the same mistake.

  50. :

    3 out of 5

Stellar citrus opening! The one thing Im not happy about is this fragrance destroyed a lot of fragrances I own. Once u smell something of this quality it shows how poor some frags are. it has now raised the bar of what I expect from a fragrance. In the mid Im getting something deep and kinda sweet ….I think its the amber? I do get a slight rose as well. i think Im gonna have to pull the trigger on this regardless. Its gotten thru the pretest but I need to test this out the bottle for a few wearings before I will really know if I love it. look forward to checking more from this house
Bought a full bottle, wear it almost everyday, luv it!

  51. :

    4 out of 5

To my nose, i dont think of this fragrance as a Lemon based. Yes, in the opening you get the sparkling, very realistic, fresh lemony smell but after 10 minutes it is joined by the mint and the amber which is the main player of the composition. The blend is very nice.
The amber resembles creed’s creations drydown which they say it is ambergris.
Excellent quality ingredients and great versatility. Can be worn in all seasons, anytime, anywhere.
Longevity and projection are both good.

    A majestic citrus scent.
1861 brings us that famous invigorating feeling and at the same time tasty.
A natural citrus combo with bergamot and mint, seems natural, lemon touch is also present, which brings us a sparkling and delightful feeling.
The lemon bitter touch is offset by fresh bergamot and green with mint, which brings me to lime, i feel a floral side and clean and in drying a velvety sparkling and a little sweet amber touch, a spring/summer scent in a bottle, really lovely scent.

I love this fragrance, but in 15-20 wearings I have yet to receive one compliment. That alone makes me think it must not perform or it is just too common smelling.
    My Score: 8.5

  55. :

    3 out of 5

Disappointing – I’m not a frag head, having only just taken a more serious interest in this art but this one was boring for me.
This is why it’s so imperative to try these scents before buying – this one has many great reviews out there but to me, it was pretty dull; yes, a zesty orange open, bright and sparkly but also quite “chemically” ie, a bit like a mainstream “airport” scent.
Nothing special for me on the open. A very non-descript middle section and when it finally dries down it’s a middle-of-the-road, rather unremarkable patchouli scent.
Xerjoff do produce some extremely interesting scents but this one was just a simple Terre d’hermes clone for me.

Incredible perfume! ! ! Beyond the citrus, the underlying accord is gorgeous! It kind of smells like you took a citrus leaf and crushed it in your hand with spices – immediately refreshing and natural. No synthetic smell here. Sillage arms length, lasts for hours on my skin. Wow!

@Alfarom: with all due respect, I beg to differ on your comments about Xerjoff……… Xerjoff is FAR FAR FAR MORE than just citruses……… In the men’s line, Richwood, Homme and Oroville….. It’s true, they do Citrus exceptionally well, but to just categorize them as such is a bit short-sighted…. I.M.O of course……….

  58. :

Amazing, some kind of eau de cologne style, but much better. The petitgrain note is amazing, green and natural, you also can feel the citrus notes, lime, orange, all smells natural, over a warm and soft woody base. If you ask me: why should I try 1861? A’ll say: because you can use this, everytime, of everyday in any occasion. If you compare this in its own ofactory group, you’ll sure it’s a solid fragrance. But man, the opening is one of best moments you can experience. I wish I could hold the opening for hours.

    This is an exclusive fragrance
It opens with fresh citrus and lemon blended together. You can not easily make out the lemon and citrus and yet you can appreciate the two. Again! Mint is not left behind and makes sure it’s presence is felt
The beautiful thing about this fragrance is balance. Non of the prominent notes are itchy or sharp and yet you get enough of all of it
After it’s application, it makes you feel like a royalty of a sultanate and you tend to fantasize being a ruler of vast empire looking down on it’s kingdom from a huge mountain top castle where fresh and majestic scent glorifies your position.
This fragrance makes you feel special.
Scent is 9/10. Nice Projection and a great longevity. A little expensive though. Oh Well! doesn’t matter if you feel like ruler of a kingdom.

a sharp, refreshing citrusherbal scent in the spirit of old school italian citrus colognes. Bracing lemon and realistic green leaf mint hit hard in the opening and calm down after about ten minutes revealing some white and red florals, petitgrain, dry amber and wood. Overall a very nice and pleasing scent, very mainstream. The citrus is quite bitter and pungeant, the mint realistic and sweetness took a vacation day for this fairly dry event. Check out 1861 if you enjoy classic italian colognes.
    Score 6.5/10

This was very disappointing for me.
Minty lime and citrus-green opening is not so sweet. Some leafy elements here too, probably that mint leaf again that puts me off quite a bit because it’s of the ‘green’ type.
Not the kind you get in the spearmint polos. There’s practically no sweetness at top and the amber appears far too late to create any depth. Here, it’s just the raw green leaves of mint.
I’m more of a tart ‘safe’ lemon/grapefruit lover so this was always going to be not my type as the theme here is strictly ‘natural green’. Lemon always seems more sweeter-brighter citrus than the greener rawness of lime, and the very good quality just not able to quite convince me into liking notes like lime/herbal mint.
And the usually divine smell of grapefruit is simply absent here. So it’s mostly green limes , not Amalfi Lemons the note guide misleadingly displays.
Fans looking for a sweet, ‘safe’ citrus niche should really look elsewhere, as this is simply another one of those ‘green-herbal’ niches that I like calling ‘bush’ frags. Just a big, limey-green bush in disguise!
A smooth, rich/sweet amber does eventually commence but for this money and House name they probably should be offering a little more.
Frankly, I think the Lynx deo-stick I have gives me better return for the money, and it smells nicer (sweeter) too! What’s not to like about that? Niche houses should be aware of where they are in the market in terms of finance and repertoire, and I’m not sure 1861 registers as anything extraordinary to me at all partly because they tried to stray away from ‘safe’ again.
I’ll stick with the Creeds. Namely Bois de Cedrat or simply a Chanel if you want some real Amalfi Lemons!
    I’ll give it a 5/10, just.
Because it is the ‘cheapest’ Xerjoff, and they tried hard. Oh, and it’s also a bright, sunny day- so I’ll be nice =]

I thought this was going to be the best citrus I smelled until I found Nio. This is a relatively cheap offering from the house, as cheap as a Bond (comparing it to Little Italy shows you how insane that is) and cheaper than retail on a Creed. It’s got a really refreshing combo of citrus and mint, I definitely enjoy it. I think my enjoyment has gone down since finding Nio though. The mint in this is just a little too weird. Great longevity for a mint and citrus fragrance though. Very impressed by Xerjoff and longevity.
    Scent: 7/10
    Overall: 7/10

I got a sample of this, and had to purchase it! This is so high end. Omg, good enough to wipe the feet of Jesus with my hair. Love Love Love….fresh clean crisp, and not like all the ‘generic’ brands out there with celebrities names on. So worth having in your arsenal.

Well this opens with a minty lime and citrus freshness that could have been squeezed from the fruit onto my wrists. These are the most natural notes I have smelled in a fragrance.
I’m now picking up the mint strongly but not mint like in toothpaste it smells like the actual mint leaf. So its coming across too my nose as leafty green and minty just after the wonderful opening fanfare.
I am also starting to smell the petitgrain with the green leaf and now a bit of lily of the valley is starting to show its head. I tell you now it smells like I have gone into a Summer garden and applied the fruit and leaves and rubbed them onto my skin.lol
In the drydown it gets woody mixed in with the minty green leaf.
    Conclusion
This fragrance has the most natural smelling ingredients I have smelled in a scent. I cannot pick up any chemical notes at all. In a way it feels strange to experience such high quality notes.
You know when you are eating a orange after you have peeled it and the smell coming from it, well imagine that on your skin but mixed in with equally good citrus notes.lol…… It’s coming up to five hours and its still going strong on my skin. Wonderful.

With the exception of Xerjoff Homme, I’m coming to the conlcusion that the main points of strength of Xerjoff are citruses. As previously experienced with Nio, the aromatic quality of these elements is handled to never turn into the usual chemical blast, and 1861 is here to confirm it. Fizzy, invigorating, sparkling and clean but, at the same time, it avoids the “synthetic-laundry” vibe of many modern compositions of the same family. I’m not among the biggest fans of this type of fragrances but 1861 is incredibly well done: no doubts!
Bergamot, petit grain and a sort of minty-greeeeen-lime are joined by a subtle yet clearly remarkable lily-of-the-valley note while a clean woody/musky base provides the necessary support to an otherwise efemeral fragrance. I suspect the presence of woody amber somewhere, but if it’s there, it’s surely not overdone.
Overall, if you’re looking for a long lasting, fresh throughout, citrus centered composition, 1861 is one of the best option you can have on the market and, if compared to other deliveries from the same house, it’s also “reasonably” priced. A refined spring/summer fragrance. Neither original nor groundbreaking yet incredibly lovely.
