Description

A new men’s edition, The One Gentleman, is expected on the market in September 2010. Dolce & Gabbana are celebrating 20 years of men’s fashion line of this brand in June, so the new fragrance will be launched to celebrate this anniversary.

Face of the new edition is popular actor Matthew McConaughey, who also advertised perfume The One from 2008. Photographer of this advertising campaign is Jean-Baptiste Mondino. Gabbana is describing and announcing advertising photos in a video clip in style of Marcello Mastroianni.

Composition of the new The One Gentleman is based on oriental notes which should attract confident and sophisticated customers. Aromas of the new perfume include: pepper, fennel, lavender and cardamom, while a base is composed of vanilla and patchouli. The fragrance is available in flacon shaped like previous edition (original The One), available as 30, 50 and 100 ml EDT, accompanied by perfumed body care collection.

My bottle is probably 6-7 years old and I´m pretty sure that the juice inside has changed a bit. It was my first fragrance (just like vaibshankla) that I did not buy from a supermarket and it was all love back then. Only downside is that heavy pepper in fragrances always makes blood rush to my ears and cheeks but this effect only lasts only minutes in this fragrance (Unlike Beckham´s Instinct After Dark that makes me feel ill).
The One Gentleman opens up with watery spices that I would describe as pepper mixed with the aquatic feel of Acqua Di Gio. Later it turns into watery cardamom that has a slight resemblance to D&G The One but with a hint of vanilla and finally it transforms into vanilla cardamom sweetness that I love. I have actually smelled this dry down few times from the sprayer of tester bottles of the original The One. Those ones were very dusty and had little under half of the juice left so were more than likely been there a while, exposed to who knows what. But the scent of One Gentleman was noticeable and I was surprised as there are nothing in common besides cardamom.
A very good fall fragrance for rainy days and semi-cold weather. If I had to label this I would say this is aquatic gourmand if that even makes sense.

This is fairly nice. It’s a vanilla scent but not heavy vanilla. The vanilla is surrounded by spicy pepper but also cooled by lavender. I’d like it a lot more if it was simply stronger. It’s a relatively light fragrance with somewhat poor sillage. It does smell good but I was certainly expecting more strength out of it for the price. Still, I blind bought this and I don’t regret it. It has it’s place in my collection and that’s probably as a work scent since it doesn’t project. Nice but weak.

man i wore this couple of times and i was thinking…damn thats reminding me of one of my latest purchases….i aw Jeremy mention it smells like one 24 Scenstory fragrance which i never smelled.this morning i woke up and it hit me, this stuff reminds me of l’instant de guerlain , weird huh?no coco in this….,but definitely got the patch, lavender and woody feel that i got from l’instant edt….nice nice under rated juice…its mature, its dark and its suited up gentleman scent….i like it plenty

Regretted not buying the 100ml when it came out at Winner’s for like $$39.99. It’s even milder than the original(is that possible, lol) and, not worthy(to my nose) of being a true flanker(didn’t compare the notes so I might be making a fool out of myself, but from my recollection, the’One’ and this weren’t very similar, which is okay!) yeah, I don’t like the normal ‘One’…it’s color lured me in, but everytime I smelled it, it was different!
This is nice though, and definitely a summer scent. Good for office probably.

I received a bottle of this from a friend. If you’re wondering what this smells like- think of those little orange Circus Peanut marshmallow candies. Sweet, classy, and well blended with similarities to The One.

This is was one of my first proper fragrances (circa 2011). I wasn’t as spoilt for choice as I am now.
It really made me realise how fragrances develop over time.
Having so many choices now days (with increasing complexity and strength) have made me less sensitive then I previously was
It is kind of sad that as we experience more less we cherish.
    Now to the review
Peppery, cardamom lavender backed by sweet subtle vanilla.
    Very well behaved.
    Underated close encounter smell.
Doesn’t have much projection but has decent silage.
Can be over sprayed without worry:
    Smells classy.
    Longevity 4-5 hours.
Still like it to this day but Have more expectations from frags than I used to (sadly)
    Blind but worthy.

wow, what is it with all these fragrances with bad longevity and silage? do they actually expect us to buy this crap? make something that lasts and will get you noticed. not water. i would say that after 2010, reformulations have killed fragrances to the point where they are not worth buying anymore. better off buying clones and knockoffs that actually last longer. what a shame and rip off. if people stopped buying this crap, maybe the perfume houses will start making good stuff again.

This is poor. The comparison with Scentstory Go Dark are fair but Go Dark is the far better scent, better blend, better performance and better depth to it but half the price.
D & G are literally knocking out flankers to folk who have an addiction to fragrances and they are so poor

unique fragrance, not too strong, but rather fresh, reminiscent of the smell of fruit, candy…

Another boring vanilla scent. But I like the boring vanilla scents 🙂 Sometimes less is more, and in this case this is working. Few minutes pepper (not my cup of tea), then half hour lavender with a bit of sweet cardamom, and the rest of the time I get only smooth vanilla, vanilla and vanilla. Not overwhelming, not too loud, but as most of the vanilla based scents has a good longevity.
    – spring/fall/winter, day&nighttime scent, not too loud, very versatile
    – sillage is bit better than average. longevity around 8 hours
    – safe blind buy

But I think they stopped making it

This fragrance earns its gentleman name. It’s a nice, formal scent that I at times use for work when I dress up a bit more. It’s inoffensive yet doesn’t smell like your typical mall scent. It’s prices are reasonable. A good bang for your buck and the bottle and juice look nice.
Scent: the vanilla, lavender, and pepper work well in my opinion. It comes across as a warm scent but not a gourmand type scent.
Performance: I own the edp version of the ONE and this performs the same, if not better which is a decent upgrade over the edt version of the ONE. 3-4 hours with the first 2 hours having an arms length projection.
Season: winter or fall. Can def wear this with a suit.
    3.5/5

  14. :

    4 out of 5

While I see that many people have been disappointed by this one, I have to say my reaction has been the complete opposite.
Admittedly I am a fan of the original The One, and yes for performance issues I would put this one in the same “Date Scent or Reapply every 4 hours” category as the original, but I still find it an amazing scent that takes the readily identifiable DNA of the original and adds a solid dose of pepper and vanilla.
I find the combination magnificent and I gladly bought the bottle after receiving the test vial with some skepticism after reading so many of the critical reviews. I have chosen to make this my warm-weather alternate to The One for date nights with my wife or for social gatherings in general – like the original, I really like this as an “evening formal” scent.
Scent is such a subjective thing, but I don’t get the “smells like it’s been done before” remarks below – I’ve sampled a lot of scents, and I found the pepper-vanilla variation of this scent very unique (at least on my skin). If this flanker is as unpopular as a casual glance would make it appear, I am glad I snagged it while I could.

The One Gentleman smells peppery, spicy, and warm. But then the lavender and watercress make it cool. I think this dichotomy brings it down, however. At first, it’s like there are two different colognes fighting for dominance. Sometimes opposites work well together, but there is room for improvement here. Drydown is similar to Burberry’s London, but without the smoke or woods.

  17. :

    4 out of 5

Interesting to note that some other fragrance reviewers commented on this and the original ‘The One’s’ lack of longevity; really poor show considering the pricing and relative exclusivity of the brand. That said, this was a pleasant fragrance that I used to wear mainly for work. I similarly purged it from my collection during a spring clean/pruning session and I haven’t missed my (still half-full) bottle since.
I found this scent to be pleasant, but not strong in any direction; I didn’t feel exceedingly fresh, tremendously sweet or downright sexy in it – hence its departure from my collection.
Worth mentioning is the fact that you never see this on the shelves of U.K. stores anymore – says a lot about the preponderance of here-today-gone-tomorrow offerings from the mainstream frag houses.

  18. :

    3 out of 5

I am pleasantly surprised with this D&G release. I was given a sample when it first came out and sort of forgot about it, having other things to sample. But I wore it one day and saw what I had been missing. Then I wore it several more days and continued to like it. It is really a well-made and very pleasant scent with a lot of elements I enjoy. Like Chanel Allure, it’s not a dramatic grand slam, but it’s just unassumingly well made and pleasing to wear.
I think it’s best categorized as a “creamy wood” scent. Once the super-smooth spices and sweet lavender of the opening fade a bit, I find that it’s dominated by round, pleasantly sweet woods + light patchouly accord. There’s not actually supposed to be woods in there, but there’s definitely a dry richness to it that balances out the sweetness of the patch and very light vanilla.
This is a very nice scent that could be used in countless environments. The sillage and longevity are both about average, bordering on light, but honestly if a scent like this were much stronger and thicker, it would risk being cloying. Gentleman has it about right.

Dolce and Gabbana’s The One Gentleman is an underrated fragrance. You can smell the vanilla, cardamon and lavender, with a slight hint of the pepper. It smells really good at the top. The drydown is different but still smells good. This suffers from D&G’s performance issues though, and only lasts 4-6 hours with decent projection only at the beginning. Very safe scent though and the smell is really good.

When I first sprayed, I was expecting something different, possibly just a reinterpretation a-la-Royal Night, which by the way I love. The One Gentleman, instead, goes quite far. But «sometimes *a perfume* has to go a very long distance out of its way to come back a short distance correctly». And indeed, give The One Gentleman 10/15 minutes and when it settles down you will recognize the DNA of the line. This one is just more aromatic, more resolute…a lot of pepper and cardamom, okay, and a slight tobacco-ish feeling, but in the end the perfume is not too strong or invasive. Less warm than the original, maybe. Anyway, I like it very much and I think I will grow to love it! Otherwise I would never have bought it — it’s a gift. Last but not least, also the bottle design is remarkable.

@Curtis_ado; You nailed it… And with a far greater adeptness than I could hope to impart. DG The One Gentleman was a blind buy for me today as I was searching for something different to wear on a 108 degree day (which is typical for the next two months here in Las Vegas) Thank God I work in a professional luxury retail environment and not directly impacted by the insufferable heat.. but we do tailor the scents we wear to the season at hand. The last thing I needed was yet another carbon copy Aquatic in my summer collection. What a pleasant surprise this was. I could not get past the lipstick of The One original and the longevity was unacceptible. But Gentleman throughout the next +4 hours remained (although not linear) fresh, spicy, well behaved and singularly individualistic which for me, says it all. What a wonderful intimate scent for those quiet reserved moments to be enjoyed by two. Slumber will come gently this evening after two soft sprays to the chest.
    Well done Dolce Gabbana!

The One for Gentleman was something I stumbled upon and bought blindly since I loved the original The One. I learned quickly, however, that these scents are very different from one another, and that they shouldn’t really even be under the same label. That being said though, The One Gentleman is a lovely scent that you won’t smell very often, which makes it unique among all the designer fragrances you see.
The top notes are spicy – cardamom sticks out, but you can still pick up the vanilla, so it remains a sweeter fragrance. The dry down is pleasant as it gets less spicy but remains very fresh. I think that “fresh spicy” is the perfect explanation of this fragrance.
I think that it’s perfect for the summertime or springtime, and I live in a very hot and humid environment. I think that wearing it in warmer seasons provides the scent with better sillage. While one can certainly wear it in cooler temperatures, I think this scent performs best in the warmth.
Additionally, as the name says, it does feel a bit formal. On the weekend in jeans and a t-shirt, I often think it’s a bit much. However, it’s perfect for work and the office environment as it’s fresh and professional (in fact, I’d say it’s my signature work scent in the summer). On top of that, it’s unique. Given its price-point and uniqueness, I highly recommend it.

Dolce & Gabbana The One Gentleman is a fragrance that ended up in my collection simply because I had enjoyed other Dolce & Gabbana fragrances so I thought I would give it a shot.. At first I was not sure what to think about The One Gentleman, I was not quite sure if I even really liked it.. But over time as my taste for fragrances matured I began to appreciate The One Gentleman much more.. Even though the color of the juice is blue The One Gentleman is actually a warm spicy oriental! The One Gentleman opens up with a fruity grapefruit & a spicy pepper note which together almost comes off smelling a bit like bubblegum.. The grapefruit begins to fade & lavender starts to make itself known in the heart along with spicy touches of cardamom & an interesting fennel note.. As The One Gentleman starts to dry down it gets a bit sweeter due to a prominent vanilla note! The scent dries down to a vanilla & patchouli combo.. There is a lot of vanilla in this fragrance but it never comes off smelling to sweet.. The One Gentleman is very much a completely different fragrance from “The One” but I have to say they do share similar traits! Both fragrances are smooth, subtle, classy, refined & share a similar structure! The One has a bit more sex appeal whereas The One Gentleman is more serious, mature, & formal.. The One Gentleman has a strong scent but a subtle performance, & it is suited better for the colder weather.. The One Gentleman has a pretty unique scent, there aren’t to many other fragrances like it although something about it slightly reminds me of the discontinued Gucci Envy.. It looks like The One Gentleman has also been discontinued to make way for “The One Eau De Parfum”, & to be honest I am not surprised.. The One Gentleman may have been a bit to “different” to appeal to the average joe.. You may have to enjoy “oriental” fragrances to really enjoy this fragrance.. The One Gentleman may not be one of my favorite fragrances but I do enjoy to wear it once in awhile!

My experience might be different from others – all I can smell from this perfume is just cardamom. Yes, that’s what I’m talking about – CARDAMOM BOMB!
Long story short, I am in the middle of choosing several perfumes with my wife at perfume shop in Kuantan, Pahang in Malaysia. Upon testing, my wife like this one and urged me to buy this. I admit, this is quite outstanding aroma compared to others that have more lightly scents. But even in the first sniff, I can detect the cardamom note. The force is strong with this one!
I can see here many reviewers rate this perfume can be wear either day or night, mostly in winter & fall but in reality, we live in Malaysia where the climate is hot & humid all year long. So there is no chance I will wear this in hot daytime because it will be pungent & cloying. I seldomly use this One Gentleman in rainy night time because I have many other perfumes that perform better like Bentley for Men, Spicebomb, Cartier Declaration Essence & Valentino Uomo.
My advice, if you really love cardamom note, this might suit you well. But if you don’t, stay away from this one.

The One Gentleman by Dolce&Gabbana has a good smell & good bottle design as well but of course with weak longevity & sillage makes it incomplete unlikely.
    P.S. Nothing is perfect.

First of all, i want to say that i don’t want to upset anyone. I only share my own opinion (which is very harsh with this one).
I have never came across such a horrible scent. On my skin
it’s extraordinary stinky. Maybe it’s the clash between the pepper and the lavender. I don’t really know, but it reminds me nothing but a mosquito repellent. I’m not sure if it would repel mosquitos, but people it will repel for sure (at least on my skin).
It’s the the first time i have such an opinion on a perfume.
I give it 1/10 and not 0/10 because it is almost gone in about an hour (and not more than that).

Gives a mature floral vibe that it masculine and moderate in intensity. I would definitely recommend this to a more mature person perhaps in a suit environment. The name is hence fitting. A robust 7.5/10,

  33. :

    3 out of 5

This EDT is too smoky/peppery/cardamom and too pungent a fragrance to have on all day or night, for that matter. I agree that it is a wintry fragrance and that it is masculine; but I find it too full on and not subtle enough. Will probably upset anyone in the wearer’s midst.

  34. :

    3 out of 5

I have this one and it sits really close to my skin and I get a max of 2 hours projection until it’s completely gone. I do get a bit of the nauseating effect a lot of people mention but it isn’t too bad. I just wouldn’t want to sit next to someone on a plane for 16 hours that wreaks of this stuff. I put on 2-3 sprays max, if you do anymore than that you are just a jerk and may give those around you headaches. I would give this one a 7/10. It’s definitely a mature scent 25+ can appreciate this one.

The pepper note is too harsh and its stays throughout the entire lifespan of the fragrance. Projects way too much for my liking, so much that it gives me a headache. Had to scrub it off my arm and that was only 1 squirt on my wrist. Even after the scrub I could still smell it lingering on my wrist. Way too strong that I gave it away to a friend.
This should be the Father of D&G The One, smells exactly the same just that this is 10x stronger.
If you fancy a heavy, long lasting scent then this is the one for you. In my humble opinion do not blind buy.

  37. :

    4 out of 5

It’s a nice scent, fresher and lighter than the original but on me it’s a very weak scent, sitting very close to the skin, with limited projection and longevity. It’s Winter rolling into Spring as I write this, I’ll try again when the weather has warmed up a bit and hopefully it may have a better result but as it stands not one I’ll be going back to in a hurry unfortunately. Roll on the summer!!

After the original version released in 2008, it was the time for this version, from 2010, called Gentleman. And here is my critic: I think the original version is more classical, elegant and linked to the meaning of chivalry than this one, which could have been called The One Modern, for instance. It features a much more youthful and versatile appearance than its predecessor, although it is, in my opinion, better in all aspects.
Unlike the majority, I did not expect to find anything from the original version here, different from what happens when I have access to Fraiche or Intense versions. Apart from these cases, I take a flanker as it should be treated: as a version that was released to increase a line of fragrances. And in this case, was no different.
From the original version, this fragrance only shares the notes of grapefruit (top) and cardamom (heart). I’ve read reports of wearers who were able to identify the DNA of the original version. To me it didn’t happen!
The composition, this time, is the following: grapefruit and pepper, in the output; Lavender, cardamom and fennel, in the heart; patchouli and vanilla, in the base.
As soon as it is sprayed on the skin, the pepper is quite present. Then, a gentle nuance of lavender emerges, holding hands with a unique aroma that recalls anise: is the fennel. The evolution of this version is faster than the original version, which is why vanilla is perceived more quickly.
The patchouli is not bitter, but slightly chocolatey. For several times, I felt similarities with the smell of L’instant de Guerlain, when already evolved and, obviously, saved the proportions.
On my skin projected and lasted much longer than the original version, winning best position within a comparative scale. In addition, as already mentioned before, I found it more versatile, which reinforces my previous opinion on the 2008 version, which combines better with nocturne events or especial occasions.
The bottle kept the visual identity, now with a lid in metallic tones of gray, giving contrast to the bluish-gray color of the liquid, in addition to the neck and the inscriptions in gold. Worth knowing!

*Update: This does have a touch of The One notes in it. You really have to sniff for it but its there. Only thing is there is an oriental vibe to this one. I really like this. Easy to wear pretty much anywhere and anytime.

The One Gentleman is a crude, dry, herbal vanilla that takes all the timeless charm of Caron Pour un Homme and flattens it into a cheap “suede” accord, full of faceless rasp. Like being promised a macaroon from Ladurée and getting a Pop Tart instead.

  48. :

I honestly wasn’t expecting much when I received a sample of this one in a sampler set. I find that many of the clothing designer scents are more flashy, glitzy, with a heavy burst of alcohol and intended more for those who buy for the brand rather than the scent itself.
That being said, I was very surprised. There was very little to no alcohol as this is a fragrant oil-based cologne which means that it smells good going on, doesn’t evaporate quickly and doesn’t need that horrible discordant funk that is common in cheaper alcohol-based scents.
Let’s be clear, so far, I love this cologne. The pepper and vanilla are very complementary on me. I don’t get as much lavender as others seem to, but, that’s OK with me.
This is a very well balanced cologne that has enormous projection (I was in another room of the house and my wife could smell it from a completely different room, although it wasn’t overpowering either close up or from a distance….just) a like a pleasant, fragrant cloud follows you around.
    Bravo!

At first spray smells straight up like a mix of fruity pebbles, a concealer compact, and lipstick, very intense and ‘full’ smelling, probably from the pepper note I’d say. Goes from this into a very nice ‘rustic’ drier & older vanilla smell alongside an earthy and -slightly- grassy patchouli. I don’t get any lavender from this anywhere unless it mixes with something and to me makes up part of the top of it. Smells great and simple (in a good way). Smells very mature to, but any age could wear it, I think vanilla mature or crazy sweet or anything in between is liked in all age groups lol.

Forgot to say the dry down on this is pretty Damn good also very sweet vanilla with a hint of spice in the background very faint mostly vanilla and a little lavender kind of a Le Male feel but very different worth buying if your having trouble with longevity put it on right before you go out for the night and you’ll be more the fine and the compliment factor is through the roof

I blind-bought it, received today and will try to make this short:
1 – I seriously am concerned with Dolce & Gabbana’s perfumery, they are alright, but never special – maybe because it’s a design house, which I don’t see as a problem (look at Comme des Garçons). I like Light Blue, for example: it doesn’t irradiate, has good silage and longevity and brings that atmosphere of “ok, he’s a clean nice guy” – it’s ‘basic’. LB is spring/summer, and The One Gentleman has the exact same quality for fall/winter context.
2 – Many reviewers put Vanilla and Pepper as the main notes, but my lay nose captures something a bit different. The creation has a very well structured pyramid, you can clearly get a burst of pepper right away, which calms down in the presence of a soothing lavender and the spicy sweetness of cardamom – this sweet then evolves to a cozy smooth vanilla, staying very close to the skin for about 6 hours in my very rejectful complex (even the most powerful fixatives struggle with me). The last hours are then vanilla and lavender. Which reminds me of another brand’s celebrity…
3 – If you check the page of Pour Un Homme de Caron, you’ll realize how people seem to love it, but many brave reviewers have some interesting points: they complain about the literalness of lavender. Houdini4 asks: “I don’t get this in anyway. Why on earth would anyone want to smell this accurately of lavender?”. Well, I personally like PUHdC because I do love the ‘accurate’ fresh green smell of lavender leaves it brings, more noticeable than the vanilla. In a way, they are very distinct smells, but have the (almost) same composition. Lavender in TOG is simple but very noticeable, reminds me a lot of that by L’Occitane. So, if you don’t get/like PUHdC, take a look in TOG.
4 – Do not expect any “wow’s” or “what is that you wearing?”. I repeat: it will (and you will) feel clean! Excellent for work, school, trips etc. It’s basic. And I like it!

A completely minimalist creation in the same vein as Narciso Rodriguez For Him but with a different concept, this one going for fresh spicy and vanilla sweet where Rodriguez’s creation revels in musk, amber and violet leaf. The pepper note on top is interesting in such lonely company and isolation but within five minutes of initial spray it is quickly joined by a big dose of vanilla with the aromatic lavender subtle but slightly present. I don’t pick up much cardamom or watercress but it’s possible they are buried underneath the dominant vanilla.
When the vanilla starts its takeover of the fragrance 5-10 minutes in, this is the point when the wearer must make a decision, do I like the vanilla and pepper at play here or does it all come off a bit too dry and rather bland? That’s a tough call, I could easily go either way, depending on my mood. I could easily make the case for both in this review. For that reason, this isn’t a blind-buy. Be warned, this is an absolutely must try first fragrance as every individual will react to the vanilla here differently, even vanilla lovers.
The rest of the notes just don’t really come to life to give this a bit more depth, it would have been nice to get a bit of dirty cardamom and a larger presence of aromatic lavender. Instead, this stays rather linear as a simple pepper, vanilla and patchouli scent with a heavy dose of dry vanilla.
D&G The One Gentleman certainly isn’t a stunner on first glance. She’s like the girl in college who is shy and cute in a distant, hard-to-connect with way that has a great personality and a warm, embracing nature but lacks the self-confidence to truly let herself go and for that you know it may be the wrong play to get involved as anything other than a distant friend. That’s the way I feel about D&G The One Gentleman, the vanilla here just keeps me from really accessing it and enjoying it the way I should.
There’s a really dry and high-pitched essence to the vanilla here, it’s not warming and soft, instead it’s rather rough and a little bit astringent in combination with the spices. It has none of the soothing qualities of the vanilla in Ted Lapidus TL Lui or 212 Sexy Men. This one is much rougher and harsher.
I personally don’t really care for D&G The One Gentleman that much and couldn’t see wearing it other than a few times a year during late fall or the cold of winter. Something about the vanilla’s dry and cold dominance here just makes the wear uncomfortable for me and stale. Still, the concept is quite interesting and different enough to catch a lot of people off-guard. I have worn this maybe 20-30 times in my life and still have the capacity to enjoy the minimalist essence that this is, it’s just a very dark and unfriendly combination of notes and blending that somehow doesn’t harmonize on my skin. Longevity is spectacular at between 7-11 hours an
