1970’s in a bottle and I fricken love it! Jovan Sex Appeal is at a time when men preferred to smell like men… And women preferred it that way!
Long before Unisex was even a word Sex Appeal was king of seduction. Call it a dated and cheap drug store cologne all you want. This bad boy is still around today for a reason. And that is women still love masculine men that are rugged, hard working and driven, but yet supportive, kind and trustworthy. A man that is not afraid of being a man. That’s the 70’s in a nutshell. And that’s Jovan Sex Apeal
Sorry if this review is not political correct because it does not cater to unisex and metrosexual markets. Actually I take back that apology. I’ll not apologize for being a man. And I’ll not apologize for wearing the uber-masculine Sex Appeal.

This could pass for a niche fragrance. Kind of dirty but also 70s drugstore. It smells almost like Amber Fetiche by Annick Goutal. Amber with green geranium. You could probably pick up a half ounce of Amber Fetiche for around the same price of a 4oz Sex Appeal, and it’s a more complex and long lasting (yes AG lasts) scent.

If Gillette made an EdT of their shaving cream in the red can, it would smell identical. That says everything you need to know about it. If “barbershop” scents do it for you, grab a bottle of this.

nice blend of sandalwood, spices and amber, very similar to Pierre Cardin pour Monsieur but Sex Appeal is sweeter…cheap but good, not for kids

I must amend my original reviews from love, then to like, and now dislike. I try to wear this at times I am not going to leave home. It is not something the world should smell on me.
The top is not very good. It does not smell like citrus to me. It is plastic-y and, it is a numb smell. I just don’t know what is going on, but it is bad. After an hour on my skin and it is softer and spicier. Lots of notes playing here, but the scent is poorly blended. All notes seem muted and far away, …weak notes but loud scent altogether. The full effect of all of this is a fairly strong cloud of confusion. I presume some of this is musk, and it may be a type of musk invisible to my nose. Probably many musks.
I disposed of Jovan Musk for men cologne (not the Musk aftershave/cologne, that is different and much better: still in my aftershave cart). I was not happy to throw it in the trash can, but I did not want someone else to smell like that. Too funky and unpalatable. Sex Appeal is better than that and I will continue to try to find a time and place for this cologne. I am a huge advocate for Jovan Black Musk, White Musk, and Secret Amber. Those are magnificent and I wear them with pride.

    I do not understand.
How can someone state that this fragrance is similar to Dana’s TABU, Creed’s BOIS DU PORTUGAL, V&R SPICEBOMB and Pierre Cardin’s POUR MONSIEUR?
This must be a serious case of olfactory fatigue.
About Joavan’s SEX APPEAL. It’s a quite nice, not pretencious spicy green fragrance. For the price it costs it’s outstanding.

This was a blind purchase. And I absolutely regret it. I don’t get how people in the forums actually dared to compare this so spicebomb… There is absolutely NOTHING similar to spicebomb.
Jovan Sex Appeal? More like Sex no more. This stuff is simply disgusting. It’s a repelling blend of spices that aren’t even blending well together. It smells like a zoo. Literally. This is a bottle of orangutan butt scent. I’m not even exaggerating.
Half an hour later, when the animal butt notes cool off.. the dry down smells almost exactly like Christian Dior Eau Sauvage Parfum’s drydown. Which, if you’ve smelled it before you’ll realize, is very animalistic.
Never ever buy this if, like me, you listened to others and thought this was going to be a good, decent, nice smelling cheaper version of spicebomb.
Buy it if you want to constantly smell like a zoo.

I’m buying this just to be able to smell it myself whenever I want. I had access to a bottle when I was a teenager, and it’s hands-down the sexiest scent I’ve ever smelled. It is just.. for me, it’s perfection. I’ve never had the chance to smell it on the warm neck of a man before, so that’s seriously on my bucket list. Nothing in the world compares to that.

This one was another blind purchase I made, after much research and read/watch positive reviews on the fragrance. Officially, it was released in 1976, along with a female version, which was discontinued.
Sex Appeal has a complex composition, typical of the perfumes of the 70’s, always very dense and with bottles that almost had mustaches (LOL). Joking aside, today the company just says that it is a fragrance made up of herbs and spices. But the official composition features notes of bergamot and lemon, on top; lavender, carnation, patchouli, sandalwood and vetiver, in the heart; Amber and musk at the base. Do not be surprised if you smell it and swear that it has geranium and moss. This is because Sex Appeal is woody, spicy, mossy and somewhat aromatic. It’s the old school type, a category that does not appeal to young people and, I dare say, not even the older ones, who no longer want to state their ages with perfumes that are called nowadays “for Grandpa”.
Although marketed as Cologne, it has a higher concentration than an Eau de Cologne. The box carries a fun slogan, which says: “Sex Appeal. Now you don’t have to be born with it”. The bottle follows the current visual identity, which conveys what we call “cheap”. But do not be fooled: even though the exterior is poor, its quality still impresses.
On the skin, the aroma goes from the sour lemon to the sensual musk, passing through floral and mossy nuances full of presence. It is a classic masculine scent that has the same style of others of the same era, like Gentleman (1974), Pierre Cardin (1972) and Giorgio for Men (1984).
For me, it’s a fragrance that rescues traditions and helps a lot, in case you no longer want to invest money in a similar fragrance of expensive brands, but would like to feel that kind of smell once in a while. Projection and durability are very good indeed. It is a pity that the current fragrance has some very artificial nuances, but this is also present in perfumes of prestigious brands, thanks to the famous reformulations. It is worth knowing, especially in the United States, where it costs around 10 dollars.

I like it… scratch that, I LOVE IT!! 2 sprays on each wrist after a hot steamy shower and I’m good for 7-8 hours. Very strong in the beginning 3-4 hours. Most of my coworkers say they smell sandalwood and spice

My very first serious boyfriend wore this. Kept it in the glove box of his late 60’s Chevy Nova, alongside the equalizer (yes, it was in the glovebox too!) and giant 80’s house stereo speakers in the back.
God, I loved him so much, and I’m not sure I’ve ever smelled anything better! (Ok, well, I guess I have, but MAN, did that boy smell GOOD!
    I loved it!!!!

This smells like Barbasol Original Shaving Cream. It took me some time to figure it out.
I am really starting to love this. It smells better everyday. I think reaction with air is improving the cologne.

I have very mixed feelings about Sex Appeal. The opening is loud and unusual. It reminds me of those smelly old vinyl Halloween masks I would buy as a child. The molded vinyl that smelled of ougassing powerful chemicals. It is the way my senses register the musk.
I do not smell green notes or any specific spice. Just spicy in a very generic way. There is patchouli and herbs. I think there are a lot of different musks working in there. The musk in sex appeal is very present and forward.
I do not love the scent (I absolutely love Spiced Amber), but it is incredibly compelling. I do not wear this out yet. I spray this when staying home. After a few evenings wearing this at home, I am still deciding exactly how I feel about it. I still spray it on my arms. I smell my arms constantly.
Musk is something I believe people register on an emotional and personal level. Sex Appeal is appealing. I recognize the scent from childhood days at church on Sunday. It must have been popular.
The Jovan men’s fragrances are good. I do not consider this a luxury scent. It is simply good. It is powerful and long-lasting. It is not often that I am intrigued by a smell. Sex Appeal keeps me searching for answers about what is going on. I cannot figure out the details of this. It is animalic to the nth degree and my nose is constantly drawn to myself. The fact it is an amazing value should demand you seek out a sample to see if it is right for you.
    Update
I must say the drydown is a beautiful thing. Sex Appeal is linear, but the drydown is the soft version of the opening. The lower volume is essential to appreciating this. Sex Appeal does not smell expensive, but it is good, masculine, and provocative.
I like Sex Appeal, and could easily say I love it if the opening were more enjoyable. On my skin it is powerful for 3 hours, and the better softer drydown I really enjoy is also around 3 more hours. Then it becomes a skin scent for 3 additional hours.

This cologne smells like hot dry wood and roasted spices. At $15 or less it performs better than your typical designer EDP at 6 times the price. Of course, you have to be okay with smelling like Burt Reynolds.

I first met with the fragrance agent, but the scent so familiar …
    Typical 80s and 90s …. spicy, musky chords …
It reminds me of classic scents such as Krizia Uomo, or Lagerfeld Classic
In you are a kind of “old school” barber shop atmosphere ….
That sex appeal? Today, I do not think it’s the fragrance category reflect the sex appeal st someone, if not older man is ……
When they began to manufacture probably it was a good choice of name ….
Today, instead of “purity” indicator ought to or perhaps a “charming” …
In any case, very low cost and high quality fragrance for middle aged or older.
Coty and maintain a reliable brand in past eras outstanding fragrances!
Anyone who loves the “old school” perfume, a new member to the collection ….

i bought this a long time ago, in about 1997. I wanted to get a perfume basically to smell nice and please the ladies a bit, you know? and so I was in the drug store when I noticed and started looking in the perfume counter that I thought about this. So there it was, “Sex Appeal” and it was like $7 and I thought yeah maybe it is sex appeal, it sounds cheesy, but I bought it because that was my purpose at that point, so hey.
MAN was this stuff WRETCHED! rough as hell spice bomb! I thought no way would any girl find this a nice sex appealing scent. lol.
I still have about half the bottle, and have worn if a couple times in the past three years. it has mellowed (aged) quite a bit, and though still the same scent mostly, it has lost a lot of its massively sharp burning notes.
I think it has a lot of orange peal, since that has a similar spicy dry kinda scent, and maybe pepper, patchouli, and some sandalwood. very spicy for sure, but just doesn’t smell good.

    I have 3 bottle’s from batch of 1989/1991/2015-
We often buy perfumes which we just buy for the sake of collecting. There are perfumes which are so bloody expensive that even iphone seems cheapo.
But there are certain fragrances, whom we have grown up with. One of those easy going and fine fragnance is “sex appeal”.
I keep on wearing it thrice a month. And people having longvity issue please use the perfume along with its deo spray for enhanced longevity. And its so cheap that i wont mind reapplying it after 3 hrs (yes i always carry two perfumes at least, anywhere).
    A fine “known gentleman” fragnance.
    Cheers

    Proletariat.
Every time I smell Sex Appeal, the image of working class comes to my mind.
It is a simple, modest and very nostalgic perfume with rather complex nuances of green, spicy and ambery notes. It is complex as well as simple at the same time and this is the only aspect of Sex Appeal which is appealing to me.
Don’t be fooled by its name, there is no sex appeal in it.

My review is of a vintage 70s bottle (the one in the thick frosted glass bottle)
I’m a fan. It’s smooth, like the vintage Jovan Musk Oil for Men and subtly spicy, without being overwhelming. Honestly, I see how this is an attractive fragrance, as it does seem to have a bit of sensuality about it.
It doesn’t matter to me if this is a 70s fragrance or not, because I’m happy to have it and happy to wear it.
    ** Update **
At first, I didn’t think there was much to this, in the way of projection and longevity but in truth, it’s well above average, bordering on beast mode. You need to go easy with it -too much and it can become overwhelming very quickly. I apply a single swipe with a fingertip on my arm for wear.

I got this for my husband. But, this is going to be mine. This is strikingly reminiscent of the bottle of Opium that my mother had when I was child. A lot softer but very similar. Wow! I just found a gem in the men’s room! This is also similar to Youth Dew but a lot more wearable.
Edit: Ok..after 30 minutes Opium has vanished and I am left with a very soft and spicy musk. Still, this is mine.

Want a “super cheapo” version of Ambre Sultan type scents? This might work for you! To be sure, it has a “chemical tinge,” as someone else stated, and for some people that might never dissipate, though it seems to be strongest at first. Anyway, it’s syrupy, sweet, and more or less unisex (so long as a bit of a lavender note doesn’t bother you). What else is there to say? It’s not especially complex, and it lasts well, though projection is not monstrous. I wish I was a big amber scent fan, but I prefer this quality in a supporting role.

I purchased this as it had the words sex appeal written and the marketing hype was about pheromones and androgens, I guess it was the precursor to ISO E polymers and were streets ahead of the game, but the scent was horrible. I guess it must give of pheromones of I am rich, virile, and a go getter with healthy DNA to pass on.

  27. :

I can’t speak for others. All I know is the batch I received smells exactly like that dry, clove-ey, spicy/peppery/powderish “Mennen” or “Old Spice”-ish scent … or whatever I remembered smelling on many grown guys that I looked up to when I was a kid.
It’s cologne, so longevity is only average. Sillage is moderate-plus at first, so go easy on the trigger if you’ll be wearing this to the office or other confined quarters.
This gets a big thumbs up in my book. Stupidly, the cheesy name turned me off taking the plunge on this for years. I didn’t know what to expect. But how would I actually know for myself until I tried it.
Glad I finally did. This is a winner for me and absolutely unbeatable for the price, especially if you like those vintage “manly” scents.

When I was in high school my grandma got me a bottle of this. I thought it was hilarious that my grandma got me a bottle of cologne called “Sex Appeal.” Still, I couldn’t wear this. It smelled like weasel urine or something. I was a Drakkar boy then and that gave me plenty enough sex appeal.
Once my buddy and I were smoking cigars in his mom’s car and he wanted to cover the smell. He took some of the Sex Appeal and poured it into the air vent and he accidentally poured too much. The car reeked of Sex Appeal for years, lol.
I’m no fragrance snob, I wear <$20 frags at least once a week, but this stuff was wretched. Better make sure this is really working with your body chemistry and your not just putting it on because you think something is better than nothing, since that isn’t always the case. You’re probably better off with just about anything else than Sex Appeal.

Satisfies your craving for a classic seventies scent. Although it is an edC, I still get 8 hrs with impressive projection. Very similar to Old Spice but much better performance. For less than 8 bucks on ebay for 3 oz., this stuff is a great bargain even if you only use it occasionally.

I tried this because it was cheap and is getting some decent reviews here.
I almost feel like I got a different product than what you all are talking about–because this was horrendous to me.
My image of it is the locker room of a New Jersey gym in summer, with a diesel truck running next to the open window.
It comes out with a very harsh, synthetic smell like a combination of patchouli, spices, body odor, and this weird burning note–I’m not sure if it’s melting wires, hot asphalt, or the aforementioned diesel fumes. But it’s not really separate notes, they’re all mashed together into one smell that blares at you like a klaxon horn.
After a couple of hours it dies down enough to almost resemble something I can imagine wearing–an incensey, spicy, musky kind of smell. But it’s not for me.

  32. :

When I got this back in 1997 or 1998 I got it for the name – but this stuff was so spicy and wretched, extremely rough. I couldn;t see how it would be apealing. I still have half a bottle – but it’s still spicy woody, and kinda boring with low developement and ingredients. anyways, yeah. but it’s not bad, but not good. something fine to splash on if you just need a cheapy scent.
This definitely has orange peal in it to a large degree. There is also a creaminess in there and occasionally I get the dusty patchouli. There is other stuff too I am sure, but I haven’t figured it out yet. Maybe sandalwood or something. My favorite part is probably the dusty patchouli when I get that, but I am not so hot on orange peal. I might do better with a musk based scent.
I did try jovan musk a little while back, and I liked that one much much much much much much much better.

Years ago, a relative got me a splash bottle as a joke Christmas gift. I loved it. Liberally applied it every time I knew I was going to see him. shamus1, who knows his patchouli, is right to call this a patchouli bomb. There’s also spices I can’t immediately place. Cloves? Carnation? In any case, the slightly powdery drydown is lovely.

    Lovely.
The opening is spicy/masculine, and rapidly dries down to a spicy warmth that I find to be unisex and particularly appealing. As a woman, I admire but cannot wear Old Spice. For some reason, my skin appreciates Jovan’s take on spicy wood better!
A surprisingly versatile and quality fragrance….
    5 stars!

    Revised review:
On second thought, Jovan Sex Appeal smells very good (this I realized a while ago elsewhere, but wanted to mention it here).
I’m certain Sex Appeal is the nicest of the current crop of Jovans (most of which are throw-backs to the seventies, S.A. included). What is remarkable about it is how the fresh lavender and rich amber interact to form a unique accord, rather woody, a little sweet (thanks to vanilla), and a touch anisic. There’s also a lot of powdery patchouli in there. It reminds me of Pierre Cardin PM cologne and Bois du Portugal, with a woody richness that never loses its fresh edge, and works fine on cooler autumn days. Ingredient quality is remarkably good, and the formula as it stands today could not be improved upon by anything.
Well worth the $14 I paid for 4 ounces. It smells like anything that used to go for $50.

    masculine.
    complex.
poor longevity but beast projection. (EDC strength)
smells extremely good for the money.
    very strong opening.
I usually do not care what females think of what i wear but very attractive girls have complemented nicely about this fragrance.
Was my signature for a long time but it got replaced by encre noire!
    UNDERATED gem in my opinion,

i think this perfume is a hippie.. patchouli.. woodsy ..ambery.. musky.. bomb..and i have to admit that it smells like strong older perfumes.. and more on the feminine side.. but can be worn by both.. its the kind of perfume that really works with your skin chemistry..
sexappeal..hmm the name is somewhat true ..for it has that sexual vibe.. to it.. its an ethnic perfume ..a cult perfume ..a perfume made for those with a strong heart.. and it needs a man or a woman with guts.. who doesn’t give a dam about what others think ..its a perfume in sync with nature.. with sexuality.. with human nature..it reminds me of all the old bridal ethnic natural perfumes.. made in africa and india and its believed to be an aphrodisiac..for many centuries.. so i am sure there is some truth to it ..
in the modern era it reminds me a lot of opium from yves saint laurent the vintage one.. and it reminds me of cynnabar from estee lauder..also a bit from princess hippie from des filles a la vanille patchouli and reminiscence patchouli..
the only thing i dislike is the violet notes the lavender but it s whats making it more on the masculine side ..so its a perfect blending or layering perfume.. you can add vanilla..sandalwood.. and many other endless oriental deep woodsy notes.. to get rid of the subtle cheapness and add depth and warmth which already exists but on a cheaper level..
it develops and warms up and turns smokey woodsy a bit powdery and a lot of patchouli and incense ..its an insane perfume from the 60 ies !

Smells rather feminine and cheap. I wasn’t impressed by it and neither was my wife, who made a stink face when she smelled my arm.
    ——
Update: On a whim, while in a Wal-Mart, I tried it again on my arm. For some reason it now smells better to me! Did I have a bad tester before or… what? Anyway, it’s a nice spicy scent… with good longevity. I’ve come around to Tania Sanchez’ way of thinking on this one. I now believe that this is one of the better drugstore scents.
I don’t smell anything “green” in this, either. It’s all spices.

  44. :

    3 out of 5

Strong patchouli/musk combo in the base. Pervasive.
Riding over the stern patchouli base is the spices, which are quite pleasant.
Colossal silage and marathon longevity… from ONE spray! I thought I would be anosmic to it by now after several hours, but I can still smell it as strongly as I did when I first put it on.
Take Givenchy Gentleman, mix with Old Spice, ferment in contact cement for a day or two.
    Thumbs up!

I remember growing up always wanting to be like my older brother. I wanted to dress like him, smell like him, heck I wanted to be him and so it is with sex appeal. He never quite catches up with his older brother. Take all the qualities of Jovan and split in half and you have sex appeal. Half projection. Half longevity. Half the smell. Half the duration. Definitely not a bad scent just not for me.

Great reviews here – none better than K1’s! Shamus1 nails the scent’s composition…this is truly a deep, earthy patchouli with sandalwood, ‘warmly’ spiced with rich baking spices, especially a dark, earthy clove note, an amber accord in the base along with musk (that’s a bit dirty, in a good way). Cue the 70s Porn music and splash it on. Awesome.
Nothing “green” to my nose either – except a little bite of herbaceousness in the patchouli itself. I have a Vintage Splash (4oz bottle) that I adore. I tried the latest spray in the store and it smelled close, but the patchouli was too heavy & smelled smoky/burnt upon application and then it faded to a light skin scent – rather odd. It did stay for a while, but I like to apply this by splashing it on…different vibe and feel. My old juice is very balanced and like K1 says…memories in a bottle! I watched that World Cup in ’94! I love the old box and the marketing lines they print on it – cheesy as hell! They might as well tape a condom on the box and say “Wear With Caution”. 😉
Jokes aside…this is seriously good stuff. My collection of Vintage Musks would not be complete without this. Jovan’s line of musks are very different from one another. To have this, Vintage Musk for Men, Vintage White Musk and other great bottles from the 70’s and 80’s in my cabinet is just pure fun and you will not smell like everyone else out there. Wear a nice splash of Jovan Sex Appeal, a high-end T-shirt and designer jeans and your hair slicked back on a warm summer day (or throw on a leather jacket over the top in the cooler weather) – but just throw your attitude around with your scent. You will get noticed.
Macho as hell…nothing that smells this good will ever go out of style. Period.

Very Nice for me. The projection works up to 2 to 3 hrs & Longevity up to 4 to 5 hrs on my skin, then it gets close to the skin. Some likes , some doesnt

I agree with shamus1, I detect nothing ‘green’ in this juice. Sex Appeal is a 100% macho 70s spice bomb. This came out the year I entered the University, and it is a ‘balls to the wall’ man’s fragrance. What is most appealing to me is that Sex Appeal is a truly masculine frag, yet it is not in any way overpowering (i.e., you can’t overspray this one). It projects nicely, yet is not in any way obtrusive. It has 12+ hour longevity on my skin, and projects perfectly. It isn’t a powerhouse frag (which I tend to gravitate towards), but I think it is one that anyone who enjoys spicy masculines should have in their wardrobe.

The pyramid listed above is totally wrong. There is nothing green about this. Sex Appeal For Men is an oriental PATCHOULI BOMB! It smells like almost all patchouli, with some rosewood and amber added to give it a little warmth and sweetness.
That being said, I love this fragrance. Powerful, spicy, long lasting and macho, it’s a great powerhouse from the Seventies.
    MY RATING: 8.5/10

sexy, manly, spicey scent…when sprayed on the chest it creates a warm, comforting place where a lady can lay her head so she feels cosy & safe and in love with her hubby….

Good Perfume. Strong enough to attract women. But some will dislike the smell. I like it. It holds up tp 3 to 4 hrs.

I am astounded to see this one listed- ha! This was the very-first cologne that I picked out for myself as a teen in about ’82- and I still have the old bottle, and it still smells the same as it did back then!
I remember the first time sniffing the tester at the store, drawn by its (then-) racy title, and thinking: this is what I need! It’s actually a nice fragrance. I wear it once in a very-great while- just to bring back those days: oakmoss, sandalwood, amber with a restrained touch of patchouli and juniper (maybe?), brightened with citrus, mystified with the faintest whiff of cloves and cassia bark. Quite delicious- still. I would classify it as a “spicy chypre”. I have not smelled the newer reformulation.

Those years, we were teen and we have been buying and wearing it stealthy out of our parent’s sight!
Nowadays I still like this stuff and use it time to time for casual dating! It is something that I can’t explain but I can like forever.

Simply a classic. A bomb load of spices…simply seductive…..A must have as it does not cost much! Highly recommended.

I am a “girlie-girl” woman and like Nyoka said earlier, I absolutely love this for myself.
Jovan made a companion to this one, “Sex Appeal for Women”, and I wore it back when it was introduced in the mid to late 70’s. It was truly one of the most wonderful fragrances I’ve ever experienced and I gathered many, many compliments whenever I wore it. The fragrance lasted many hours and it just got better and better.
And then… I couldn’t find it any more and I moved on to other fragrances, and over time, pretty much forgot it ever existed.
A year or so ago something tweaked my memory of it and began a search for the women’s version and came up completely empty handed, not showing up anywhere for any price. I happened to stumble across the men’s version today on the lower shelf, in a dusty box, and grabbed a whiff from an unsealed box…. Ahhhhh! Yes, it’s a little different from what I remember the woman’s version (but that was what? 35+ years ago?), but I really like the extra spiciness of the men’s. The men’s version smells just as good, if not better, than what I remember. Of course I bought it!
    I’m in Nirvana this afternoon!

Very nice fragrance. This will defintely be in my rotation. You know this sort of reminds me of amber youth dew nude for women, but with a masculine edge.

I can see how some would find this sexy, it is a woody, earthy musky type scent.
I retried this after being very impressed by Black Musk (mens) and Ginseng NRG. Alas, it is not for me and I can’t figure out why. I love patchouli’s earthy dirtiness and sandalwood is heavenly…but this is just too ‘something’ for me.
It is not exactly “old” smelling, maybe it is the aldehydes in it, and maybe it was the fact it was an after shave splash I smell
