I like it! A solid release from Frederic Malle. Very versatile. Nice, but not “wow”

This smells like when fruit is about to turn rotten; pungently sweet, anisic with a whiff of acetone. It’s loud, garish and not an easy wear. Very surprised to see something like this in the Malle line. I would have expected it from Etat Libre D’Orange perhaps, they even have a new fragrance called ‘I Am Trash’ which I would expect to smell more like this.

Music for a While is a solid new release from the house of Frederic Malle. The fragrance opens up on my skin with a clear pineapple note. However, the pineapple doesn’t feel fresh at all and at any time, but is rather juicy and syrupy, and it has the quality of being slightly burnt. The thickness of the pineapple note gradually increases and the entire thing feels stickier and stickier. It becomes sweeter too. In this molasses-like texture a new player also arrives after some time. It is my most despised note ever, namely lavender. It somehow penetrates the pineapple with its purple, slightly metallic tongue, and this is not at all to my liking. The metallic lavender effect comes and goes, but it is extremely well-blended with the pineapple and I managed to survive. The pineapple and lavender duo then continues its dance until the very end of the fragrance. On my skin the perfume lasted for an impressive amount of time, which is commendable. All in all, the quality is there and I really appreciate that they didn’t go safe with something fresh and boring. However, I don’t like the slightly metallic barbershop lavender very much. Try it for yourself and enjoy a few hours of happiness!

This perfume made me love lavender! I never thought I’d like the combination of lavender and pineapple but it is intoxicating and very different from anything else I like. I wish it lasted longer and unfortunately due to the price I will have to settle for a decant.

This is like a first born child from marriage of Caron Pour Homme and Thierry Mugler Angel. Good job!

I instantly loved this one. I will be getting this after my samples are finished. Music for a while is a contemporary sweet lavender perfume , it’s a fruity , unique , polarizing and not for everyone. Mouthwatering pineapple , patchouli , juicy strong and sweet. It gets very smooth after some time and is very well put together. The Pineapple patch vanilla lavender combination works so well and is juicy and fresh , it lasts for hours , 2 to 3 sprayes Maximum .
It can be used All year long and is definitely gender free .
I think if you like lavender this is a must have. It’s like a lavender gourmand
, but it’s fresh and airy ,light but strong.it also has this herbal aspect due to the lavender. That slightly masculine quality. It’s like masculine ( herbal ) and feminine ( very sweet ) all in one. I neeeeeed this !!!!! Masterpiece!
The more I wear this the more I love it if that is even possible. It’s so unique with its masculine cologne feel of lavender and patchouli and so feminine with the vanilla and sugar caramel and pineapple notes. I just loooooove this !!!

I nearly peed with laughter when I realized that this fougere is technically a fruity (pineapple) floral (lavender). That plus the cocky wink at Aventus (prominent pineapple) makes the fragrance feel like a witty joke.
The actual scent is fantastic. The lavender and pineapple share a… Spicy? Pungent? Tart-bitter-herbal? …note that I’d never noticed in pineapples before. It’s a clever observation.
The lavender dominates at first. The pineapple-lavender accord comes next, transitioning extremely smoothly thanks to the shared note. After two hours the scent becomes a touch more herbal or green in a way that is indescribably lovely. The last faded drydown is soft, sweet, spicy, and sexy. The whole thing is just so so nice.
This has the special title of being the first aromatic fougere that I like. It’s also a fantastic summer scent: the heat really made it bloom.
ETA: It’s popular with the men in my life, too. Bonus!

Loved it in the store and loved the initial spray however I find it to be a bit cloying on the dry downside. It is really heavy in lavender and geranium and Patchouli and Neroli and other spices which I do not care for. However this is a unique sent that is different from most so if that’s what you’re into this may be one to check out!

I’m sorry, but in addition to lavender (which I do not like at all) and patchouli, I can not perceive anything else. Probably it’s my problem, but this time I don’t like Malle.

This is sad. It smells quite intriguing and cheerful on a blotter but turns into herbal lavender on skin. Exactly the same smell as from lavender essential oil, sharp and medicinal. Maybe it’s just my skin. The drydown is patchouli, soft and high quality but nothing special. I had hopes for this one..

Not at all what I expected – in a truly remarkable way. Photorealistic pineapple, hippie patchouli & barbershoppe lavender. Kind of exactly what it says, but not really at all. A bit like food, a bit exactly like a perfume should be. Was awaiting disappointment but got … something else. Not a love, but not at all a dislike. I expected something truly modern, but got something timeless. Truly impressed with this.
Fruits & caramel made me expect gourmandesque but it’s just a bit ‘food like’. Weird. Strange. Wonderful.

Ordered the bottle from New York boutique. Got the box, opened the box, and Wow! “What is that?!?”
Sliding out the inner box, I got a huge blast of this very unique and beautiful fragrance. I immediately was excited and thought, “What a relief,” blind buys don’t always pan out. I thought “Imagine if this is just the dry-down…”
Then I sprayed myself down. Probably 5-10 sprays went on just like that, and then it hit me. oh no.
My initial impressions were not at all the same. This is some really loud juice.
I went outside, and then out for a walk with my dogs, and the entire time I was starting to regret it. I almost didn’t like it, but yet I did. I have enough fragrances to know that some have many chapters, some have very little change, while others play their trump cards right at the start and are over. Patience is good, because that beautiful dry-down I smelled coming from the box came back in full force, but not for a good 30-45 minutes.
I can honestly say that I adore this fragrance, but the opening is very abrasive. Then this becomes a breeze of curious and unexpected, with a hint of memorable. Like a smoldering, sweet and fruity smokeless fire, that is somehow fresh!!
    You decide!

Very Very Very similar to: Imperial by Boadicea the Victorious.
If you own that forget about getting this. I don’t want to hit on Frederic Malle but scents nowadays do smell very close to another. Innovative olfactory experiences are hard to come by. Really the general rule is to sniff carefully and avoid impulsive buying.

A great product of a ‘tried and tested’ theme that is LAVENDER.
While I admit to be a connoisseur of fine fragrances and perfume for many years, I do however spot an ‘unnecessary extravagance’.
See here is the thing: Yes, this product performs well and I love the pungent and piercing opening with the pineapple/ patchouli weirdness that makes this lavender appear sharp, green, if not a bit scratchy-screechy, for it to later mellow down into a beautiful and authentic almost botanical lavender.
If you can live without the first half hour of ‘weird sharp green sensation’, you could also be settling for the proven, tried and tested classic that is “Un Homme” de Caron, that will cost you a quarter or less of the RRP for this deluxe version.
Don’t get me wrong, it’s a fantastic and long-lasting lavender, very manly and strong, but for me personally I cannot justify the high RRP for a large bottle. I also prefer the slightly more hay/ vanilla dry-down in the proven classic that is “Un Homme” that is softer, more vanillic.
‘Music for A While’ is an amplified ‘Un Homme de Caron’ with a mega bass sound system, shouting at you, while the cheaper former is singing to you.
Try it for yourself, but for me this is a simple calculation.
Verdict: 7/10 – the ‘posh’ and nuveau-retro sibling of ‘Un Homme’ de Caron. The macho-male version of its counterpart that is “Mon Guerlain”.

Lavender and pineapple is an interesting combination. I love anything lavender and the lavender in this is definitely top notch. This is a more youthful departure from Frederick Malle’s “IMO” overly mature and powdery offerings. Although I don’t love this, I like it better than anything else from the house.

All I smell is pineapple juice. Slightly nauseating.

  21. :

    5 out of 5

    Such a weird combination….
You can smell something earthy and herbal and at the same time sweet candy. Later earthiness dries down and you get pleasant, sweet, fruity fragrance.
But still, I just simply don’t understand it.

  22. :

    5 out of 5

    Weird…
Syrupy pineapple juice that is scented with dry lavender which dries down to a patchouli base.
Doesn’t smell bad.. But… Doesn’t smell good either. Just don’t feel like the notes meld that well with one another.
I was hoping for a modern fougere (a stronger Masculin Pluriel from MFK) that isn’t too soapy but offering greater longevity and projection.
This is more an oriental, but a strange sweetness.

  23. :

It’s the exact scent of Cafe Society. What smells lovely in a candle, though, doesn’t necessarily work on the skin–at least not on mine. On me, it’s sour pineapple, vanilla, and lavender.
I have it, I like it OK, I’ll wear it when I’m in Hawaii–like I do Comme des Garcons’ Nomad Tea, which this reminds me of, but it’s not something I’d want to smell daily.

Tested this on a beautifully warm spring afternoon. Got the pineapple punch right away but it faded over time, and I didn’t really pick up much lavender (but I grow several varieties of lavender so I’m looking for a very specific note). Lasted all day on my wrist. Nice progression from first spray to dry down and the complexity is playful. I agree with Chris89, this one is eccentric.
While I liked this fragrance, I wouldn’t wear it again, it doesn’t suit me.

  25. :

Smelled it for the first time today. It is amazing! Wow! Starts out quite loud and almost caotic, but in a good way. The wafts is gorgous, but nose to wrist is a little intense the first couple of hours. Its sweet but never cloying or syrupy. Just a bone dry burnt sugar note throughout. With lavender, pineapple and patchouli.
It’s quite masculine leaning to my nose, but a little eccentric. For me this would be a casual or clubbing fragrance. Laid back, modern, but high quality. It only gets better and better in the drydown. At the end there is this lovely fruity (pineapple) aroma.
Need to test more, but can’t remember the last time i got this blown away by a fragrance. Want a full bottle before summer.
    Excellent longivety and sillage! 9/10

Scent – sweetened pineapple & fluffy lavender musk.
Season/Time of Day – I prefer to use this one in the colder months, during the day.
    Projection – I did get noticed, I didn’t get a compliment.
    Longevity – I get 10hrs consistently.

very smoky burnt sugary scent presents opening to end.
I understand that might give an impression as “urine”.

sprayed it on a scarf this morning at 10..initial notes of lavender..lasted for good 3 hours.. now 16 in the afternoon i get that pineapple with whiffs of lavanda.. good quality like all from FM range.. but i dont wanna smell like lavanda-pineapple..

  29. :

When you first spray this it is truly horrifying. Like urine. Strong, unpleasant urine.
Give it ten minutes. It dries down into a (still strong) lavender, pineapple and patchouli forest.
Even though there is no woods or pine or juniper in here, it strongly reminds me of the woods. Of a forest in Canada, or somewhere.
I’m getting 12+ hours out of this thing. It has a crazy half-life.
The pineapple saturates this scent. They didn’t pull any punches with the pineapple IMO.
UPDATES to come as I wear it more. These are just thoughts from the initial wearing.
UPDATE 04/16/18 – I am going to put this down as a ‘like’ not a ‘love’ and I’m not going to buy a full bottle. While it is wearable, you have to LOVE lavender to enjoy this, and I don’t LOVE lavender. It’s wearable, it can even be nice, but it’s not something that makes me happy. So, like not love.

This is really good up close on my skin, and I imagine even better in the air. Like the youtube reviewers, i get all of that lavender and the pinch of patchouli. Unlike the youtube reviewers, i also get that pineapple note supporting in the background. This is the “Aventus” of the line, not because it smells like Aventus at all, but because it is the lady pleaser

Ok folks, I bought this as a blind buy because of the notes and the fact it was created by Carlos Benaim for The house of Frederic Malle. It is absolutely wonderful. This fragrance is very appealing. It is expertly well blended. It leans toward a fierce manly fragrance. My wife said this fragrance is one of the best you have brought home. The patchouli, caramel, vanilla notes really come through. I think the pineapple comes through somewhere around the 3rd hour. What a fragrance! I love it. It is one of the best fragrances I have experienced in the last 2 years. Yes, I will be buying a full bottle.

  32. :

    3 out of 5

I don’t particularly like the initial opening as the pineapple is strong then but I like it a lot in the dry down when the pineapple is much less apparent and the scent much more complex and delicious. I also like that it doesn’t smell like anything else I own or have smelt.
However, I wouldn’t have bought this at all if I’d read the Frederic Malle website description referencing FUR. If “many eyes are on her” it’s because she’s a Fur hag and Fur is dead! Disappointing.

The opening of Music For A While is a beautiful lavender that is simultaneously herbal, earthy, caramelised and oily, which recalls to me a similar moment in the opening of the kaleidoscopic lavender of Bogue MEM. While MEM transcends its material to form an olfactory maze, Music For A While is more straightforward in its overall development.
This wonderful lavender is soon joined by juicy citrus and succulent pineapple, with their mouthwateringly sweet tartness and delectable pulpy richness, as if having a bowl of fruit salad next to a lavender field under sunny blue sky. The lavender soon turns more camphoraceous with time, a quality that is enhanced by the similar earthy camphor facet of patchouli. This also allows a smooth transition from the lavender/fruits in the opening to the patchouli/fruits in the dry down. One possible downside of amping up the camphorous character of lavender is the potential link with something asceptic. I myself get this association from time to time, but not strong enough to provoke a negative reaction from me.
When the lavender finally switches its leading place with patchouli after about 4 hours, Music For A While is now a caramelised fruity patchouli with a healthy dose of ethyl maltol, which is reminiscent of the note combination and the structure of Mugler Angel.Music For A While is of course less bombastic and lacks the gooey texture and the dark chocolate of Angel, but I would not be too surprised if someone decided to make a lavender version of Angel and presented it as such. As for vanilla, I personally don’t detect it as a well-defined note, but it probably helps to round the edges of the fragrance.
I got an 11-hour longevity and a moderate to soft sillage.
Overall, I quite enjoy Music For A While and find it solidly done, especially the multifaceted opening lavender. The dry down sits comfortably in the gourmand fruity patchouli zone, which is probabaly the zeitgeist of the last two decades of modern perfumery. While I would not say that it’s the best gourmand lavender, it’s certainly a more interesting and more layered interpretation among the recent gourmand lavender offerings. If you happen to be searching for a well-balanced gourmand lavender-fruity-patchouli fragrance, I think Music For A While is well worth a try.

A nice aromatic lavender with a little touch of fruits but a very strong masculine note of geranium on a sweet base.
Of course impossible to miss the comparison with Pour Un Homme de Caron…and why paid 4 times the price of a classic to have a “ok but not as good” variation on the sweet aromatic lavender accord.

I am testing it right now and I wonder how beautifully and artfully it diffuses and blends with my skin. On it I can feel a hint of lavender with some little bit sweet freshness, full of volume and depth, but what I feel in the air is something different: more sweet, but in just a right way, definitely spicy, burnt sugar/ patchouli /labdanum infused, textured, multifaceted, sophisticated and alluring. It’s very good from the beginning, but if you listen to this ‘music’ in a comfort of good ‘acoustics’ (definitely not in the dep. store), then you will recognize and enjoy the sillage – it sounds like a symphony. It’s not loud and kind of abstract fragrance – with time it becomes very balanced, so you just feel happiness and calm. I guess it can be perfect daytime unisex scent to share, as well as gorgeous evening scent with few more precious drops behind the ears and on the wrists.I am very impressed by the quality and qualities of this perfume – it’s so much beyond those duty free ‘hotties’ which I just have seen today waiting for the flight. But you really need to test it like listening to great music – wearing imaginary earphones that will cut off the noise of ‘fast living’.

I tried to avoid the prejudice I had due to pineapple note that never works for my benefit. And the good news is that this music is really not about pineapple.
This music composition is about fresh French lavender, herbal/slightly minty patchouli & ripe/juicy fruit. This is the scent of Indian Summer – warm, earthy, herbal, with optimistic fruity vibes. It reminds you that even if summer is definitely over & you can feel autumn in the air, you can still enjoy clear & sunny days – because that´s what you need – a touch of the sun and Music For a While.

I like this fragrance. No, I DO LOVE this music.
I’m a lavender fan, and this one smells classy and sophisticated to me.
The important thing is that Music for a while not a pineapple scent at all. It’s all about lavender from the beginning to the end. A strong green lavender with patchouli/mint vibe, smoothened and sweetened by ethyl maltol/fruits in the base.
It smells as a modern version of Caron pour un homme. Imagine the Caron, add patchouli and replace the old-fashioned vanilla with a modern sweet/pineapple molecules, and you will get Music for a While.
    So chic!

I had the chance and honour to try it today in Liberty although the official release (at least in London UK) is this Friday 9th March.
All I can say upon first sniff is that the opening is a beautiful juicy pineapple going hand in hand with a very present lavender which makes you stop on your tracks for the complexity.
The reason is of the ever-changing nature of this beautiful creation which from that bright sweet and airy opening, evolves in a patchouli/spicy (maybe black pepper?) heart without giving up on its pineapple fruity character.
Don’t be mislead by the colourful and summery fragrantica fruity icons, as I personally deem this perfume has fall/winter/early spring qualities (in this regard I somehow associate it with Orion Tiziana Terenzi since the oud in there and the patchouli+vanilla in MFAW have a strong body suited best for chilled weather).
Don’t expect anything like you tried already on pinapple combos, as MFAW is totally on a different direction.
I find it really complex. And the dry-down it is really intoxicating where you find the pineapple still there at the party, welcoming the warm and round vanilla base while the patchouli is holding the atmosphere with light breezes.
Actually there was a transition moment where the patchouli gave a light hazy-smokiness working as an amplification for every single moment of the accords.
And maybe it is just me but on the dry-down I get a sort of cardamom vibe..
It is a must try on skin (back of my hand in my case) as 2 hours after spraying I really find my self constantly sniffing at it.
    Longevity is well above 12+hours
Sillage and Projection are moderate to heavy (i just had one spray from 30cm away 6 hours ago and it’s lively)
It is a creation that deserves some attention as the parfumer Carlos Benaim came back from retirement just to create this blend for Frederic Malle.
All in all a beautiful creation.
9/10 for me. A fantastic “demi-fougere” with a fruity stamp!

This comes out March 2018 & I was able to smell it today. The SA described it as pineapple, lavender & musk. It opened with a strong lavender & reminded me a little of Chanel Jersey because I mostly smelled lavender & vanilla or maybe musk. I really didn’t detect the pineapple but I can smell it now in the dry down. In the dry down the lavender has died down a bit (the pineapple is not that strong either imo) & I’m getting a dry smoky faint patchouli. Musk isn’t listed in the notes here but I agree with the SA that it’s in here. And as I sit here smelling the blotter I think the SA actually summed it up perfectly-pineapple, lavender, musk. This is all based on a tester strip, I didn’t try it on. I do kind of like this & it’s something I’d like to try again & see how it wears on my skin.
Update: The smell from the tester strip was so strong later that night & even into the next morning. Very strong & very synthetic smelling. Don’t think I’ll be revisiting this one after all.

Why am I os-magining a CREED Aventus type scent, sans leather, kissed instead with (the seemingly ever-present) sweetness so popular today amongst perfumisti with a sweet tooth (or should I say NOSTRIL?)??
Time (and one’s Nose) will tell, but until then I am guardedly optimistic as EdPFM is consistently above par, at least in my experience, thus far.
    Can’t wait to sniff…
