I have this and cannot get past the smokey factor. My bottle is the vintage. Anyone that would like this smokey, resinous, tarry, grassy, burning leaves magnificent for everyone else than myself, do let me know. Truly, i got compliments wearing it on both occasions, but, I just find it to be Interlude on steroids! My pleasure to even swap it out. This is my second review. And, what is odd, is that the brand new Rich Mess is what I am getting in the dry down! I am now trying both of them and … well, RM is nicer!

Liquor, liquor and more liquor in that opening. Eventually dried down to fir, dusty incense and a synthetic ambroxan type of affair that can be found in many modern niche fragrances out there. Very enjoyable but, again, sadly not for me.

Officially, the best name EVER for a perfume. No doubt.
As for the scent…. it gets really, really churchy eventually, but not in a humid way like other ornate Catholic church scents like Sahara Noir. Drier, more outdoorsy, more folksy and just more American, for lack of a better descriptor. It doesn’t take too long to get here though, and you can’t smell it at all 12 hours later. Still, it’s probably the best DS scent.
The beginning seems to announce itself with the same distinction all of the DS scents do… the sharp medicinal blast that can be off putting. I quickly learned not to judge by this first impression, though I must admit scents that take some “getting over” before they settle into a pleasant evolution always drop down the list for me. I’ve got enough to power through on the daily because, unfortunately I’m alas an adult. I don’t need to spend $175 to add to the check list just under “call the bank” and “pay the dental bill” :/

Good day, this is my very first review . I already had Bowmakers before I got Mississippi Medicine. Let me tell you my very subjective opinion – Mississippi is just an unsweetened version of Bowmakers. And I really really like Bowmakers , so I’m very happy with my latest addition of another D.S. Durga to my collection. Not to mention an overall quality of this fragrance house. I won’t give any numerical ratings at this point , but it is a very decent quality juice with very nice projection and longevity. Cheers!

Ointment, liniment, sticking plaster, herbs and trees and leaves and sap … yeah, you’re in D.S.&DurgaLand again, and it’s a great place to be, if uncompromising nature and slight weirdness are your home range. Never been to Mississippi myself so I can’t speak to how authentic its cypress is, or how genuine the Deep South dirt may be. But overall this is beautiful: definitely one of the more deeply outdoorsy ones of the range – it’s less assertive, but also more natural-smelling, than the human craft evoked by Bowmakers’ varnish and turps – and with the same absolute integrity of all the rest from this house I’ve tried. Disregard all the ahistorical nonsense hype about death cults – there’s nothing in there to freak anyone out, no weird blood or metal or animalic notes – it’s all pretty clean-cut for a muddy-footed urchin sort of a scent. There’s a measured, cool coniferous clarity behind the first few wafts of smoke too.
Really gorgeous, true unisex, pretty oddball stuff; horribly overpriced, but there’s very little else around that’s anything like it, so I’ll just hope that the universe throws me a bone on this one and sends along a used bottle via eBay or a bored frag-head who can’t deal with Mississippi Medicine’s swampy charms. Personally it’s right up my bayou – I’d quickly grow obsessed with it if I owned it, I think. Bewitching.

The astringent, medicinal quality of the fragrance is what makes it shine, and it’s very polarising. The birch tar and incense married with violet set the tone, while cypress and spruce play second fiddle on the dry down. It has a low tenacity but a relatively high impact while it lasts; it’s definitely a conversation starter in many ways. It’s a great sibling scent to their Burning Barbershop fragrance. If you like this, definitely try that as well.

I adore this olfactory experience. I won’t call it a perfume because I think it’s impractical to wear. Although I feel it’s weak on me, several friends have complained about the scent and said that it’s strong. After settling I get a mouldy abandoned mansion in a hot climate with some kind of menthol/camphor similar scents. I love the imagery it creates in my mind and it’s strangely exciting and comforting… I would probably buy a couple of samples to wear this when I’m alone – simply to please myself. I also love Bowmakers… maybe this would be a better option for wearing out?

I really wanted to like this; I absolutely ADORE the ‘rotting cypress’ smell of New Orleans in the summer and was looking for something like that. I added this to a small spray vial so I could test it properly. I love wood, leather, smoke and incense smells.
‘Medicine’ is a great name for this; the very first scent is a medicinal odor, like witchhazel, Noxzema, or other astringent smells. After twenty minutes this slides into the background and the tar/cypress scent comes to the fore. The astringent scent then changes into a note that’s more incense, but a pungent Frankincense style instead of the sandalwood/cedar/pinon incense I prefer.
I’d had this on for five hours now, and fortunately it’s not strong or I’d likely have to try to wash it off. Just doesn’t work with my body chemistry, and not something I want to smell all day.
For comparison, my current favorite scents are:
Jazz Club; Tobacco Nuit; Gypsy Water; Super Cedar

Opens with a big blast of cypress and birch. Super into it.
Dries down fairly quickly into a concentrated soapy smell (the violet?) which isn’t bad, it just isn’t all that interesting. The incense sits in the background throughout, supporting and filling out the other notes. There is a comforting warmth to the scent.
Only vaguely masc at first but total femme on me (a woman) for the rest of the wear. I can see this being unisex or even masculine on some people, though. My skin just likes to amp “girlie”.
I like it okay, and if I ran across this for 60 bucks or so, I’d be all over it and raving. This isn’t to say it isn’t worth the full price, it is. Doesn’t smell cheap or tacky in the slightest. Just not for my body chemistry.
Teeters on headache-inducingly strong in the current weather. 70 degrees, wet, no sun.

Dry, peppery wood with a slight balsamic note. Instantly takes my to hot days of Georgia summers. I can here the cicadas now. I grew up in the Southern United States. In woods near my town there were these old slave cabins abandoned since before the Civil War. We played in them as kids. A thick solidified layer of tar sat between the wooden timbers that walled up the cabins. This scent reminds me of that resinous composite. It has a slightly sinister tone, like a scent soaked in some sort of slave voodoo. I can’t get enough of it.

A gorgeous incense-based masculine and earthy fragrance, this mysterious beauty combines the incense with birch, spruce, cypress, and violet to evoke a nice realistic feeling of the Mississipi delta and proto-Mississippian voodoo cults. Very masculine, mysterious, earthy and unique, with moderate sillage and projection, this one is a beautiful composition.

Well I have read a lot of the reviews on this scent and I have to question whether I have the same product.
I get a heavy incense as soon as it’s sprayed. It reminds me of burning incense in my younger days (you know, the sticks with the wood tray that catches the ashes as it burns down).
I don’t consider this scent to me masculine and I feel that it is unisex at best and potentially even leaning towards feminine as it dries down. I pick up cypress in the middle and base notes but what I can’t detect is what so many others have pointed out. I do not get any smoke or leather from the scent and it doesn’t remind me of the outdoors.
Aside from the incense and cypress, I would say that it has a medicinal smell to it in the dry down (maybe that’s where the name came from).
To each there own, but this one isn’t a favorite for me but my wife actually liked this scent.

Superb. Charcoal block with grain incense – specifically, frankincense, glastonbury thorn, calendula, cypress, wood shavings, mastic tears, a smidgeon of pine and dried red autumn leaves. Wear this, and you step inside John William Waterhouse’s “The Magic Circle”, wherein a woman stands before a fire and cauldron, casting with her wand, a fiery circle about herself and a constable of ravens. She carries a crescent moon athame and a bouquet of floral herbs is tucked into a sash about her waist. You can smell the charcoal, the herbs, the earth, the black feathers, the total immersion in the power of the earth which she stands upon barefoot. The fragrance is amazing. The work of a full cycle around the sun, 365 days and nights solar activity on the 3rd rock out produces this. I get all dark and spiritual over it. It stirs deep memory. This stuff touches the primal. Dips it’s face ni the hoodoo voodoo bayou. To get this hung up on such a scent, I guess you have to get down to basics. Google a sepia picture of Keith Richards and Anita Pallenberg at Joshua Tree. Get into that feeling of everything and nothing. Get down to the woods. Taste the Southern Death Cult, paint an eye on each hand and watch the sun rise. This house might well be worthy of the hype. If I can find a way to test the whole damn range here in UK, I’ll let you know.

At first spray I smelled a powder, then it fades to smoke. This juice reminds me of camping in the fall and sitting around the campfire. I really like this scent as a casual winter day kind of cologne, but the price is way too expensive for what you are getting.

The opening smells just like good gin. Then it passes through woods and into a dusty abandoned workshop: old wood, grease, smoke, leather. 14, late summer, a pocket knife, a stolen bottle from mom’s liquor cabinet and a flashlight, off to find the abandoned cabin in the pinewoods at the end of that dirt track that everyone says is haunted.

Mississippi Medicine recalls childhood memories of sleeping in a canvas tent in the woods. (Or maybe my backyard, it’s been a while.) Hot, still air inside the tent mingles with the faint sourness of mildewed cloth and the tarry tang of pine trees. Dusty earth, pine needles, and bitter snapped branches are overlaid by the first curls of woodsmoke. Soon bacon will be crackling in a crusty iron pan.
I like this scent. It opens with a natural feeling that recalls the nostalgia of the freshly cut sisal rope and sawn oak board my dad used to make me a swing every summer. For me, this scent recalls a slice of my American childhood: woody, smoky; slighty sweaty in an inoffensive way.
This is a gorgeous scent memory in a bottle. However this rough beauty stops right there, at scent memory only. I pause, waiting for the rest of the story.
And Mississippi Medicine silently leaves me and my memories behind, and disappears into the Southern pine forest.

This is a nice mild masculine scent. You get the woods, the smell of smoke, of meat cooking in wine, and something really close to traditional incense. It gets a little too much patchouli hippie vibes going on as it fades, which dampens the natural esque appeal of it’s arrival. It’s a simple fragrance which relies too much on the strong earth tones that waver off too quickly.7/10

Whoo! Campfire at sunset. Woodworking shop. Smokehouse at lunchtime. This is a very manly, smoked wood smell and I love the genuine feel of the outdoors that comes with it. Whenever I wear this I just want to go camping and chop some lumber. I don’t smell any sweetness from the violet though.

The opening does not tell the story of this frag. The opening is so bold and beautiful but after 30 minutes or so the sillage quickly turns subtle. Just about every niche/indie house has their reference smoky scent and I would assume that this is D.S & Durga’s as it is sold out on Beautyhabit but it’s totally lacking. Bunino said it best. Nice to sample but not FB worthy at $125 for 50ml.

This and Bowmakers have incredible openings but are both lacking something that makes them fb worthy.

I admire D.S. & Durga perfumes for embracing capital ‘A’ Americana instead of pretending to be continental. I ordered 5 samples to see if I could find a full-bottle-worthy match.
The listed notes are accurate. The opening is birch and tar, and the dry down is smoke and evergreen woods. Boyfriend liked it fine, but it wasn’t a favorite.
I could see this being very sexy on a man, and I do *like* Mississippi Medicine, but it isn’t really me.

An interesting mix of wood notes (cedar, birch) and incense, probably not the heaviest/strongest offering D.S. & Durga that I’ve smelled. Surely more on the cold weather side but also workable in warmer weather, Mississippi Medicine is doesn’t lean so heavily on the incense as it does on the woody/resinous notes. Like other scents in the house, it smells very natural, never surprisingly sweet or sour, but almost a patchouli-esque earthiness. Probably not one that I’d buy but with decent projection and longevity, it might prove worthwhile. This makes me to go back and smell some of their other scents to compare.

A wonderful and unique fragrance. Smells just like an old church or at least the old church in my mind. Heavy Incense/cypress and subtle smells of earth, wood and old books. Longevity was a few hours, 4-5 at best which is a shame, at first this hits hard and you think it would last all day. Sillage is strong at first but quickly subsides.
Worth sampling and deciding for yourself, this is an incredible fragrance.

Love the name of this fragrance but love the smell even more. One sniff and all you can say is, “Momma, there goes that man!” Wanna question the integrity of this medicine? This has the toughness of an inmate in a orange jumpsuit. This opens with an unapologetic medicinal peppered cypress with plenty of smoke to confirm that Mississippi is indeed burning. Just picture fireplace soot on a bed of blackened tar. The developmental process isn’t all doom and gloom because if you meditate on what’s happening, you’ll notice something faintly fruity which may come across like an olfactic illusion. It’s important to note that M&M is a eau de cologne with toilette strength. I got about 5hrs out of this…Honorable mention.

I have to disagree with the folks who find this to be a ‘very long lasting’ scent. Apply at 8am gone by lunch is my experience. Perhaps on a younger body.
MM reminds me of growing up in the South. Of burning leaves on a fall day. That smell with the the leaves burn into a stand of pine licking up the leaves and just a hint of scorch on the trees.
A scent of pine tar, grass, leaves and and smoke. Even dry down. Just wished it lasted longer.
DS & Durga is my favorite perfumery. Their scents are unique, rarely comparable and take a bit getting used to. You won’t be accused of smelling like someone else (not wearing DS and Durga) For the adventurous
