I got a sample of Lumiere Noire pour Homme from Luckyscent. It has a soapy floral smell. It says pour Homme but, seems feminine to me. Reminds me of a bubble bath scent from my childhood.

“Lumiere Pour Homme” is a dry, spiced rose scent that calls to mind the scent of pot-pourri dusted onto a thin slice of carrot cake. Cinnamon and cumin give an arid, prickly sweetness to a somber rose and patchouli. The dry spicy quality makes it lean more masculine to me, but it could be worn by a woman too. It’s so understated as to be almost barely perceptible after 30 mins, dulling to a faint whisper of rose dust by the end. It’s pleasant, but pretty bland and the performance is so bad, I couldn’t recommend purchasing at MFK’s ludicrous price.

Refreshing, invigorating, powerful. I adore this. Must-buy. I don’t think roses are the prominent note in this fragrance, men shouldn’t be scared off. This is a great masculine scent, very confident and strong.

I love this fragrance but I don’t know when to wear it. I like to spray it in the air sometimes out of frustration. Smells masculine on my wife and feminine on me.
    Excellent quality nevertheless.

I love this fragrance. It’s complex, masculine and the rose note screams of confidence.
I would usually wear this during the day during formal events but it works well during the evenings.
I would say it’s for people aged 25+ but if you get drawn to it then wear it with pride!

I found this to be quite a disappointment when compared to Lumiere Noire Pour Femme, which I adore.
The men’s version has less character. It’s less distinct, though pleasant and tastteful.
Maybe MFK should have brought in an old-school French actor to advise – Catherine Deneuve (whatever you think of her following recent news regarding her signing of that letter!) influenced the making of Lumiere Noir Pour Femme, and I wonder if that’s why it has a classic film noir/femme fatale aura.
The Pour Homme version lacks character, in my opinion, and it disappears on skin (on my male friend’s skin anyway) so having said that, it might suit other men much better. Or maybe it’s best suited to summer.
    Sillage soft, longevity moderate

    I hate rose.
    This is rose.
    I love this.
Outstanding composition… professional and sensual rolled into one. Masculine self-assuredness in buckets.
    Blind buy no problem.
Use it sparingly though, it’s powerful.

This is a very well blended romantic scent and i love it BECAUSE there is not much of a rose to detect and not despite it. This is a weird one for me, i love it although its supposed to be dominated by 2 of my most disliked notes rose and cinnamon. Cinnamon is there but its very subtle and shy and keeps in background, rose is close to not detectable.

I agree the comment below. This is floral woody fragrance whis is very romantic, beautiful and very unisex. Not much rose there.

I don’t get much rose on my skin. It’s mostly a crisp and woody patchouli with a stunning freshness weaving in and out that never takes the spotlight

I didn’t understand this one at first. In fact, I found it to be a bland, elderly woman scent. But then something clicked and i understood this scent. It smells like I’m sitting in a sun room during the fall, and I’m surrounded by woody plants and roses. It is not a fragrance that screams for attention. It is not for an extrovert. It is for a serious and accomplished person who only wants to be noticed by certain people

This may be over $200, but at least it smells like it should be over $200. It’s that good. So, if Mugler A*Men ever comes out with a Rose edition, it’s going to smell a lot like this. Whenever i wear this It always reminds me of A*Men, which I love by the way. This is just a cleaner version of it. Love the patchouli, rose combo. Very unique and the wife loves it on me. Screams class.

First spray is wonderful Tea and Rose, but drydown? Drydown smells like dirty bitter patchouli, too much patchouli, its killing the Rose smell. Dry down smells all patchouli. If you want a cleaner unisex powdery version of this get the Lumiere Noire pour femme.

Really beautiful scent – at first, I was a little apprehensive given that it was a Rose-based scent, however, once I wore it, I found it to be a seriously high-quality and exquisite experience.
Incredible number of people coming to me (friends + strangers) asking me what I’m wearing.

A really beautiful scent and I agree it starts off very feminine. One has to give it a solid 10-15 minutes to settle down. Once it dries it becomes sweet and fresh with just a tiny speck of spice to make this very interesting. Slightly green, softly floral, 100% natural smelling and enough of presence to command attention. Expertly blended and obviously a high quality scent. This will give any guy a serious boost in confidence when worn. Thumbs way up.

I gave it away to my wife, to feminine to me, it marked as for men but to my nose it is non even unisex, it is ladies thing, although it is extremely beautiful and very gentle perfume!

Rosy animalic quality..A very rosy opening which feels feminine, but after an hour a beautiful pachouli and spices kick in and you get great projection and good longevity Feel the projection for many hours..

Been trying this out for the past week. I enjoy it, definitely a tad bit feminine in the opening, but once it settles you have magic.

  21. :

    Definitely a high quality fragrance.
This is a sensual and romantic scent. I like it, but it is a little too rosy and sweet to me and something that I would appreciate more on a woman. I guess I am not the biggest fan of patchouli either.
However, the negative sides will not keep me away from using it. It is quite intoxicating and something I have to smell. It is really strange.

A soft rose with a soft animalist twist, which is linear, mature and romantic..
    I applied 6 heavy sprays
0 – 2 hours – 6 inch projection. This takes a minute or two to settle down to reveal its identity. This fragrance is dominated by a gentle, wet rose which has an animalist twist, which is nothing like civet or other typical animalist, but it adds maturity and class. Masculine mostly, ideal fora romantic occasion, but not your every day fragrance.
2 hours – 4 hours – 4 inch projection. The performance is low from a projection and silage point of view but it is a strong skin scent. It is a linear fragrance on the whole, it becomes more mature and feminine as time goes on but the same DNA exists througout.
4 hours – 10 hours. Strong skin scent.
I recommend that you purchase a small decant for a mature male partner if you have one, specifically for romantic, intimate occasions. Why not Valentine’s day when roses are given? but this time, roses not given to a woman, but a rose fragrance given to a man…
It is not too my personal taste but I can see how this fragrance would appeal in a romantic occasion. It doesn’t have depth or much fragrance development, so I don’t consider this to be niche, and is not IMHO value for money given the high cost
    Not bad

Wow….This really is a masterp**** (I had to censor the word, it annoys me even seeing it in my review). That word gets thrown around a lot and doesn’t usually tell you anything about a fragrance because scent is so subjective but this is that good. Great blend ( I voted every note in the Fragrantica breakdown as ‘noticeable’ because no one note overpowers any other ), great performance, a progression that is fascinating, sexy as hell yet pretty much office safe ( the first 5 minutes may be too strong for office enviro but you’ll figure it out ). The dry down is soapy clean but not boring at all, it is in fact the best ‘clean’ scent I can imagine. FK doesn’t always deliver but when he does it can be as good as there is in perfumery.

    Masterpiece! Enough said…
BUT I have the feeling Francis Kurkdjian has just been recycling compostions/scents he’s already done for other houses… APOM Homme reminds me too much of Gaultier 2, and this one is basically an upscale version of Narciso Rodriguez for Her sold as a man perfume.. just try both, LM on one arm and NRFH on the other, believe me you won’t tell much difference, especially in the dry down!!
lumière noire is a quality scent no doubt, great performance (the longevity and projection are huge), a nice take on the spicy rose theme.
But I liked as much (on my girlfriend) when it was called Narciso Rodriguez for Her Eau de Parfum

Starts off a little bit dirty and animalic on my skin but then it turns into a beautiful masculine scent with a touch of roses that lasts for many hours. A true masterpiece and a must have for perfume collectors.

I am reveling in pleasure this morning, just chilling at home, wearing Lumiere Noire PH. My #1 fragrance by quite a margin !
My whole review just got erased, oh well…
I was wearing it today for a special occasion. I realized it has a fresh, soapy quality. Maybe the rose or cinommon have a fruity tone. It gives that clean out of the shower smell, but still stays very refined and classy.
A beautiful, exquisite, refined fragrance of contrasts.
A soft spicy, very fresh, allmost fruity rose, with perfectly blended patchouli and cinnamon, smooth, slightly sweet and soapy, but nothing jumps out, very well blended, potent quality essences used I’m sure.
Then you do get a lovely touch, of a slightly bitter green artemesia. I don’t get much patchouli actually, after the rose, the artemesia and cumin are strongest. The Patchouli vaguely blends in with the darker notes, to give a slightly woody and masculine base.
The fragrance wears very clean and sheer, yet the projection and longevity are solid.
PS, I’m trying to discover LN today, thinking on the meaning of a fragrance accord. I over sprayed today, and it wasn’t bad, but it took 20 minutes to come into the harmony that is awe inspiring. The masterfull perfumer has come up with a masterpiece here, and the key is in the blending of 5 great notes, a harmonious accord is struck, thinking of music. As those 5 notes of light and dark are struck, with not one note standing out alone, but a creation of several unique fragrance accord.
I havnt discovered it fully, but I’m learning , and that’s the fun of it…
Ah, it is a rose fragrance at the heart, but an embelished rose. I love it when a fragrance has strong floral notes, but is still masculine, it’s not easy, and this one does it.
Like Givenchy Insense, another example of a masterpiece in the category of men’s floral fragrances.
I have written 200 reviews and have a complete collection of my 50 or so top fragrances. Lumiere Noire Pour Homme is the crown jewel of my collection, awesome. Thank you Francis Kurkdjian.
A note to Francis Kurkdjian: I heard he dosn’t think of himself or perfumery as art.
I think for me this fragrance and Narciso Rodriguez for him, are great works of art. Two minimalist fragrances 5 notes and 4 respectively, The accords are so beautifully creative that I’m inspired and touched emotionally by these two compositions of his. Is not this the best aspect of what art may do, to inspire?
Frederic Malle’s French Lover, has since deposed Lumier Noire PH to #2.
    Rating: 10/10
    God bless you. John 3:16

I wore this perfume back in 2013 and wore Lumiere Noire so often that i got weary of it and sold of my Decants to explore vast world of perfumes however back of my mind i was always missing it like you miss an old friend or long gone lover.
Lumiere Noiree is constructed with three main notes which are Rose , Patchouli and cinnamon and these notes are so well blended that all three play their part very well and rose playing hide and seek with you all throughout the journey . This perfume reminded me of Le labos rose 31 as Rose in that also played hide and seek with mostly being a background player to Spices though i feel this is much better blend then Rose 31 and reason for that is Francis Kurkdjian .
Rose is a note which i personally love however lot of Guys are hesitant to try this note as it can surmise as feminine however Lumiere Noire lies more in masculine category so it can be great frag to start your rose journey in case you find rose to be feminine . This frag is also very versatile as it can worn all throughout the year and projection is with in your hand distance or even less which to me is perfect for office wearing .
Why should you not like this fragrance ? I think this is little linear frag so possibility is their that you may get bored like i did the first time i tried however other then that i dont see much issue with this frag as it checks lot of boxes for me.
Final verdict : This is bottle worthy frag IMO for any rose lover and for non rose lover as i stated this is great frag to start your journey of exploring the rose note.I wished it was little more complex so critic in me is always thinking abot it composition but still a great frag .(8.5/10)

This scent, ladies and gentleman is a beautiful heavenly poem!!! A HEAVENLY POEM!!!! I bought this recently as a 1 ml sample from a fragrance shop on the net. I had learned about it through Fragrantica, reading through the posts. Upon trying it, I ended up buying a full bottle of Lumiere Noire. Out of all of the colognes I own and have collected over the years, this is my crown jewels!!! A classy man’s rose, but so well blended that you almost don’t notice it. It almost goes into unisex territory, but stays slightly more on the masculine side. A 007 type, suit and tie well dressed sharp man, ready to lady-kill romantic wear. The dry down is a heavenly poetic scent! I’m in love!!! 🙂 Just GET IT! Best male rose out there!! Pure class all the way!

To my nose, it’s a splendid rose/pachoulli pretty well blended fragrance, that has a TERRIFIC drydown! Seriously, guys, besides the fact that has a HUGE projection and monster longevity. If you’re looking for a rose-confident-male fragrance, I dare you to get to know this gem! Also got me a lot of compliments! My only advice is that, if you’re a shy dude, this one it won’t fit you. You gotta be pretty self-confident and spontaneous-type of guy. Best rose based fragrance in the game! Pretty amazing stuff!

When I first tested it (end of 2012) on my skin I remember it a bit spicier (caraway and cinnamon) then the bottle I purchased this year. A male friend of mine gave a negative comment for that, on that day.
Anyway after three years I bought a bottle of this. I don’t think performance has changed. 3 hours of sillage and 7 hours of projection (mostly to myself though), then and now. But the formula seem to have changed. But in a good way! This is now much smoother, more refined and round.
I try not to get tired of it so I avoid using it on casual spring/summer days but more on romantic occasions while wearing a white shirt.

    Scent – rose & cinnamon.
Season/Time of Day – I prefer to use this one in the warmer months, day or night.
    Projection – I did get noticed, I didn’t get a compliment.
    Longevity – I get 24hrs consistently.

Lumiere Noire pour Homme is the most celebrated fragrance of the Maison Francis Kurkdjian, a maison however which doesn’t accommodate the talented perfumer’s best creations (a trend common to many perfumers’s own houses and a proof that master skills alone don’t produce the greatest of perfumes).
The fragrance is as implied a luminous woody rose contrasted by a dusky, earthy somehow chypre oriented backdrop. The top is greener by a dash of mugwort with its bitter herbal character. Things mellow down quickly with the appearance of a light breezy rose note removed of its usually annoying heady element infused with some cinnamon and cumin. Midway through the scent passes a slightly “pinkish” in notion powdery oriental territory before reaching the drydown. There Kurkdjian rehashes a variation on a familiar resort that is a warm and comforting musk-patchouli accord.
Lumiere Noire is a crisp composition, painted in chiaroscuro. The individual notes blend in ways the wearer might not have even hoped for creating an interplay between light and shade, between buoyancy and reclusiveness which in turn creates the dramatic effect. Kurkdjian manipulates notes and accords for the simple joy of being good at it. And why shouldn’t he do it? Has a perfume have to always have a meaning or take itself so seriously? This is a fragrance made by a man who knew how something felt, and found a way to evoke it in us.
Kurkdjian is a perfumer reveling in sweet floral accords with an oriental powdery edge. Lumiere Noire is according to him an essay on contrasts. Although there is nothing particularly new in this exercise of superb style and craftsmanship and it doesn’t advance the accords that Kurkdjian usually manipulates to great level one can’t simply avoid to be carried away by Lumiere’s handsome ambiguity. It is a perfume with an alluring radiance whose smell remains fleetingly in memory as a very inviting and romantic tune.
A beautiful perfume with a touch of darkness.

A Rose playing Hide n Seek!!!
Is it a Rose Perfume? …………. Yes!!
Is the Rose the Main Note? ………….. No!!
The Rose is the Most Mysterious Note of Lumiere Noire. It shows up it’s presence Every 10 Minutes and veils it up completely for the other 10 Minutes.
LN starts with something dirty (animalic ?), soapy spicy note. Patchouli and Cumin. After 10 minutes, suddenly a cinnamon infused Rose starts showing up. This is the most favorite part of the perfume for me. The Rose is never too deep like those velvety Red Roses not light like Freshly bloomed Morning Roses. It falls something in between and quite a pleaser. If I have to Characterize the Rose of Lumiere Noire, I would add it to be as the Most dry Rose kind of smell. Almost Powdery.
The Name Justification: Really, I could not have find a better name for this perfume. I can showcase 2 reasons:
