This review is in consideration of the current (2018) EdT.
Trussardi My Land meets D&G PH. An early suggestion of CK Eternity for men somewhere there too? The projection is really only moderate at best. Better than a skin scent though. The longevity just isn’t that great either. So, feeling disappointed about both.
No doubt earlier versions of this were much superior in both respects. In my experience, and although a sweeping generalisation, ambergris is often an indicator of superior composition – and is meant to bind the components for longevity purposes. I’ll guess it is substituted with a synthetic ambergris. Anyway, I’m sceptical of its inclusion because there is not much evidence of it here.
Otherwise: neroli, lavender, and a light tobacco with a touch of spice. I like the composition very much, and see this as versatile, masculine and cultured. But you’ll need to reapply!

Great fragrance. Some people calling it a green fragrance. this is NOT green. This is a spicy, tobacco, woody scent. Sweet as well. this has a syrupy tobacco scent. almost like a pancake morning breakfast on a wood stove
    while smoking a tobacco scent.

    Dear Herrera for men:
I still remember when you were the only perfume I wore back in the last half of the 90’s. I remember you fondly, good times that’ll never come back.
    I miss you.

I most use scents to set my mood – in every way it’s part of my wardrobe – be that getting up on a weekend morning, heading to work, going out with my wife, or even getting ready for bed or sitting down to read a book – I have scents for all of these things.
The current formulation of this scent has a similar effect on me as Bvlgari Man, I feel focused and energized when I wear it – this is in my Top 5 work scents because I genuinely feel it makes me more productive when I wear it. I am serious and to be taken seriously – this scent goes spectacularly well with a suit and polished shoes.
The herbal/spicy/citrus opening is quite pleasant, but the tobacco drydown is what makes the scent. This is not a moist, fertile tobacco note – this is a drier, lighter more arid tobacco, more in line with Tom Ford for Men and Vera Wang for Men.
I can confirm that this reform is not a projection beast, and it doesn’t last particularly long. Within an hour you need some help from your body heat to produce any projection, and after about 1-2 hours of that it’s a skin scent. That’s a bit short, but actually within the range of what I want from my work scent. I want it to be a skin scent as I’m wrapping up my day, so I can pick something else to set a different mood in the evening once I am home, something that will complement the traces of what’s left from my morning fragrance.
That’s not to say I’m not interested in tracking down a vintage bottle, because I am quite curious to see what the old beast-mode version of this is like to wear.

I got a vintage miniature from 1996 just to be sure of what I already knew. The actual Herrera for Men is barely a shadow of what once was one of the best (If not the best) scents I ever smelled. Such a pitty.

Love, love, love! like others this scent brings back memories. CH for men is the quintessential 90s fragrance forming the bridge between the uber masculine fragrances of the eighties and the sweeter concoctions of the 2000s. Let me be clear though, this is NOT a dated fragrance.
the florals soften the scent. The tobacco and cloves keep it masculine. the overall effect is a heady, sexy yet very elegant scent. Like others, I feel this no longer projects as beastly as it did back in the day, but disagree with those that say that the scent itself has changed. Still good, still classy.

Just scored a buy of the 6.7 oz. for $52 from fragrancenet. Very elegant. This used to be my signature scent back in the 90’s. Then I switched to classic Burberry. Hmmm…I might switch back???

Herrera for Men was the first fragrance I ever bought for myself. This scent was the catalyst for my obsession with fragrance. I hadn’t owned a bottle in years, so I recently purchased one, and I’m glad I did.
As soon as I sprayed it, it was like revisiting an old friend. I like it even better now because it suits me more, now that I am older. It is way different than most of the colognes I smell on guys now.
This fragrance is complex and grown-up. Initially, it is a blast of spices, herbs, and citrus. The drydown is all tobacco, cloves, and sandalwood with a little lavender in the background. I used to think of this as a night-time scent, but now I feel comfortable wearing this anytime. Love Herrera for Men. This is an essential for me.

Class and elegance. That is CH men for me. The latest formulation os more subtle but still retains the same green, fresh, tobacco scent that I always have loved. It was a beast before, now it’s a kitty but still a spectacular scent. And the best part?…..no one is using it, no one is talking about it, so you will stand out above the crowd of sweet tooth only colognes. Simply perfect!.

One of the best of all time! Timeless and a simply fantastic fragrance. Just buy it…i mean it. One of the treasures in the fragrance industry.

Such an elegant scent, it oozes sophistication for me. Opens up with really nice citrus and lavender as it works it’s way to rosemary and cloves. It’s oening to me is very floral with spiciness.
I picked this up for the tobacco notes listed, but I’ve discovered a scent that’s much more than that. This is the kind of scent I would wear for an intimate date night. It smells of class. The florals will have women glued to you.
The tobacco and sandlewood are subtle and sweet. This isn’t a tobacco scent in the vain of Tom Ford TV or Mugler’s Havane.
Pure class, will always be in my collection.

I really had forgotten how good is this parfum. I was in a mall yesterday and suddenly I saw the bottle in a stand and obviusly my curiosity was huge for remind me this smell; so I applied a couple of splash on my wrist. Ok the start was very sweet and the tabacco was on it in a very huge way… NOT LIKED IT at all , actually I tought in wash my wrist (seriously). But then I decided to give an opportunity because I know the aromas change once the body warms the fragrance (the dried) … and guys whatta change after 10 min! This perfume turned very fresh and aromatic, and the sillage increased a lot and the memories came back, I remembered when my Father wore it and how I used to admired the aroma. FYI, this is an old fashion perfume, but this is classic, this will be my next buy for real and I feel i will works very good on my office time. Recomended for guys over 35 years old.

Loved “Herrera for men” from the moment I was first exposed to it on my closest friend. I thought WTHeck, I’ll get some for myself b/c he wears lot’s of different fragrances(thus we wouldn’t have on same cologne often). I’m not very experienced w/all the terms I see used to describe scents, so my review will be very “amateur”, but hopefully real and my personal take on it. I love that it has a masculine scent that has layers to it and morphs as you have it on your skin longer. Fresh, manly, woody, lightly musky also somewhat sweet but not unisex to me are words I’d use for it. Sophisticated and definitely, to me, a high end designer fragrance. If you’ve not given this ‘oldie but goodie”(some might say “oldie”) a chance, I highly recommend it! Also you can get it for more affordable prices if you look a bit, I guess in part b/c it’s not new and been around for a while. Doesn’t mean it’s not great b/c it truly is!!

D&G pour Homme’s lesser known sibling?
Opening with a zesty and fresh citrus opening that dries down to musk, amber, cloves and lavender on a woody tobacco base.
Launched in 1991 this scent seems to be quite ahead of it’s time – no oakmoss powerhouse here, but fresh and invitingly grassy, a little soapy and natural. It’s sweet and the topnotes lend an almost floral feel to it. Brilliantly constructed. The curry notes that others mention elude me completely – what I do get though is a herbal sensation of the mediterranian (the closest comparison for me would be the original D&G Pour Homme), which others may experience as curry seasoning perhaps ?
Very pleasant indeed, but also a little shortlived – two hours of projection and another two hours of skinscent is what I get.
    Overall, pleasant and classy IMO.

Highly derivative of Calvin Klein’s Eternity for Men, Herrera is a bit more subtle and progresses from top to base notes more quickly. The opening is fresh and zingy, then it settles down through its green mid-notes into a warm woody-musky base. I like!

Carolina Herrera for Men treats us to a beastly herbaceous opening. It is a great treat of lavender, rosemary and citrus bliss! The opening is strong and transitions seamlessly to this great mix of geranium and clove, and instead of spicy, minty earthiness we get a slightly sweet floral progression due to the clove and neroli. It is after the candied clover and neroli have taken over that we realize that we have sprayed more than just a perfume, but instead we have opened a time portal to the nineties and that old school masculine floral goodness. The tobacco blazes in with a good dose of ambergris and nestles into the sandal wood, florals and spices. This scent is fantastic and so underrated. To me CHFM screams for springtime wearing! It is perfect for day or night and any occasion. So give this a few sprays before you grab your INXS greatest hits cd (clearly you wouldn’t, because you would’ve downloaded it, but what is more nineties than a cd and INXS?.. OK a cassette of INXS tunes) and hit the road for a long drive in the country.

I had this in ’91 when it was first launched. POWERFUL stuff. You spritzed it on more than 3 times, entered your ride to the club, and if the windows were up, it would blow them out! Serious, serious projection. Fast forward nearly thirty years later and I acquire the reformulated version. Sprayed it on and “What the HELL is this?!” Horrible! Like window cleaner mixed with cheap laundry detergent, nothing like the powerhouse I recall. An hour later I’m reviewing scents here in Fragrantica and suddenly I’m whiffing the remnants of something very familiar…yes! There it is! The old Herrera PH I remember, albeit in a much more toned-down, almost “indoor voices” style. To Puig’s credit they have captured the heart of the scent just not straight out of the gate. It takes a good 30 minutes to an hour for the horrendous opening to lift off before the wonderful center of the composition arrives. It still isn’t anywhere near the manly, 50ft blast-radius projection it had in its heyday, but it wafts something very reminiscent. Will we ever get back to being defined by the base nature of scent? Why on earth do perfume houses feel they need to bow down to contemporary interpretations of, “the modern”? Sales? Sure. But c’mon, have some balls. Keep it real and stop selling crap in place of real art.

I used to wear this juice as a Senior in High School back in 1995. It was da bomb! I used to sense a bit of leather in it. It drew alot of attention and compliments. This was my signature scent back then. Now I wear the original Burberry as my signature.

A pleasant, kind herbas attempts in the early 90s …..
Outstanding herbal, spicy chords in it ….
Amber and tobacco put solid foundations in its entirety!
I think at that time and now is out of place among the other fragrance ….
Currently contemporary scents define fashion trends, but the “Vintage” category, a brilliant and indispensable link …..
The aroma behavior contrary! When voltage is applied between me and relaxes me, calms, but when I’m relaxed and calm you ideas on how to arouse my interest for the ladies!
Good buy!’re Lucky, that is available today …….

Carolina Herrera’s Herrera was my signature scent for a decade.
You get the light tobacco, spices, and rosemary. Though it is not listed, I get a hint of ginger. This fragrance smells magnificent.
Performance is weak now with the reformulation, as it used to be a beast. I now get 4-6 hours with good projection. So it’s not terrible, just not what it used to be.
It’s a great safe cologne and will garner lots of compliments from the ladies. It is an underrated gem. No longer my signature, but I will always have Herrera in my collection.

    The 100 Days Challenge – Day 12:
Instant classic. Smoky and spicy accord, upon soft and pleasant sandalwood. Closer to skin once it has settled down. I would have really enjoyed the “über” experience of the first version that everyone is gushing over: the titanic trail and the infinite performance. Reformulations aside, Mr. Testosterone still loves it. This is a man’s world, and Carolina Herrera knows it.
    Today’s word: Martial.

I never really got the interest or chance to wear this cologne until now. I always thought it was over priced and overrated, and now that I am wearing I realize I was right! Finally I got a 6/7 OZ bottle for a bargain of $32 but probably it will last a long time since is a big bottle and I won’t be wearing that often. I think it smells nice but has poor longevity and so far I got no compliments or comments at all. I will stick up rather with the 212 from this brand which I don’t have at this time.
The feeling has not change for this cologne, but now I got the 212 men gray and brown.

Herrera for Men entered my circulation (that sounds odd) when it was launched in the early 90s. Back then it was denser and a tad more “perfumey”. I bought a bottle a few months ago again after more than ten years and it’s still good, but leaner and less perfumey. Although immortelle isn’t in the list of notes, I seem to detect a decent dose of it. Longevity and sillage are equal at 07/10. It’s easy enough to wear, never becoming pushy or cloying. If you need a break from your really rich Tom Ford or Lutens or other expensive creations, and you don’t mind a somewhat cachectic fragrance, give this classic-on-a-budget a shot.

  31. :

    4 out of 5

To me, Herrera for Men is a very nice, somewhat safe, yet somewhat interesting scent featuring spiced-tobacco and woods. Prominent notes of tobacco and cloves suggest this fragrance will be a bit on the heavy side. However, the tobacco has a lighter non-smoked and fresh feel to it, the spices are airy with a touch of sweetness, and the scent borders more on the fresh-side with it being only lightly warmed. Moreover, a prominent woody accord (sandalwood) give Herrera for Men a smooth, creamy, tone as the entire composition is wrapped in a polished aromatic background. Nice, polished and professional are what comes to mind.
While I really like this fragrances, I just don’t love it. It’s a classic masculine aromatic-musky fragrance that perfectly suited for the office for men thirty and over. To me, this fragrance communicates stoic, serious and professional. While I certainly exhibit these character traits, it doesn’t quite capture my dynamic personality. Yep, I’m a good guy and play by the rules..but I also have a wicked sense of humor and wearing this fragrance just seems to constrict my personality. Yep, it’s like wearing a form-fitting suit that is just a size too small and heavily starched. So I’ll wear this one when I have a bunch of budget meetings to discussion project portfolios where I need to be more staunch and serious. However, when I am conducting normal business I need to be more creative, dynamic, personable and productive.
Performance is solid; lasts a solid 8+ hours on my skin and projects slightly above average. In summary: CH for Men is a really like fragrance…quality, and I like it a lot…but it just doesn’t quite fit my personality. Shame, because this is a great fragrance for many others.

One of my favourite edts. Spicy tobacco and woody.
I agree with comments about the ‘curry’ impression, but I really don’t mind. It’s classy, and I’ll always have a bottle.
I think it may be one of those love or hate fragrances, so definitely try before buying.
    Personally I love it.

  33. :

    3 out of 5

I had this many years ago. It’s lovely but the unfortunate side effect of all those spices was that it made me want a curry because it smelled like a really good curry. It lasted a long time and was fairly powerful. I loved the smell but the constant curry cravings meant that I never bought another bottle. A shame really – even the bottle was rather nice. Most of the Herrera scents aren’t refined or distinguished or elegant but this one was. Alas, the power of olfactory association meant that it had to go. Fortunately the disparaging comments vis a vis the reformulation cool the temptation to get another bottle and revisit it (just in case). But I certainly wouldn’t put anyone off trying it.

unfortunately on my skin this one gets rather sour, yes, there´s a lot of tobacco that I like but I can´t stand that sourness for long…reminds me of Burberry for Men (1995). The scent itself is nice when smelled from the bottle, it just doesn´t go well with my skin.
Edit: tried again after several years and now I can´t detect that sour note. It´s somehow greener kind of Eternity by CK + some tobacco, very nice indeed (longevity is great with moderate projection)
    8/10

Amazing, a must have cologne. Tobacco with a sweet hints of spice.

  38. :

The bottle I purchased must have been a reformulation. It had a rather generic, barbershop-ish, mishmash thing going on, as if someone had sprayed every men’s fragrance into the air at once. Gave me a headache instantly. Wow, they must have really messed up on this reformulation, because the notes are right up my alley.
I ordered this blind because I love the smell of cloves and tobacco, and I wanted to smell like clove cigarettes. Instead it smelled like I had rolled around in several different cans of busted shaving cream. Returning it, without a doubt.

  39. :

on me. it smells like money. been my fav for about 8 years now.. wish it lasted longer though. 🙁 I could go on about all the spices and such that I smell in this but honestly, I think it smells different on everyone but it is worth a try since it is not a cliche or gimmicky frag… plus it doesn’t smell too floral or fruity. why would a man want to smell like that?

  40. :

    4 out of 5

I guess the whale vomit comments relate to the ambergris. This smells older than 1991, retro even. Reads kind of old to me, but not necessarily in itself bad. Not to be confused with CH for men!
Definitely a clove tobacco smell. Very tobacco-ey. If you smoke clove cigarettes or want to smell like you do, this could be for you. I don’t really see this as a summer day frag, except for clove smokers. A kind of “amber brown” vibe. After a couple tries, not really for me. It was a $15 blind buy, but no regrets. There’s a guy in his 50s at work who is a heavy smoker, I’ll probably give it to him.

Mmm, whale vomit (below)? I wonder when a dogfish comes swimming by, will it lap it up? Rat-a-tat-crash (cymbal). To me, this fragrance is very pleasant. I love the florals and spice with tobacco. Very nice combination. Well done. Seems a little like a fall frag, but I’ll give it a try this spring.

What a Shame this classic doesn`t deserve it.

Blind buy for me recently and like finding a diamond in the rough. Will challenge my top 5. Definitely a more mature fragrance – not suited for the young unless you have the audacity to pull it off. A great addition to any gentlemen’s wardrobe. If you don’t have this gorgeous fragrance, you need to get it. Soon.

  45. :

I tried this today, while I enjoy the smell I think it might be a bit mature for me at the moment. I will revisit this cologne when I’m older because it is a very nice, classic, masculine tobacco scent that is fresh, dry, and woody. Elegant everyday scent at a great price!

I acquired a bottle that isn’t the most recent formulation, apparently. I was very curious about this one because it has been compared to Fahrenheit, Eternity, D&H Pour Homme, and Platinum Egoiste, at least. One might as well compare it to Vintage Tabarome if you are going to compare it to those others! This is a woody/tobacco scent in the drydown, only very slightly sweet and with some geranium to keep it from feeling too heavy (it also makes it a bit more dynamic). Fortunately (for me) it is not camphorous. The tonka of D&H Pour Homme is not present here, for example, and I don’t get the comparison to Fahrenheit at all, other than perhaps a bit of lavender and another minor element. I don’t get a major spice element, so perhaps others are perceiving the tobacco as such, or else it’s an issue of reformulation. If you want strong clove try Jacomo de Jacomo (1980). I like this but it’s a bit sedate, so if you want a more dynamic tobacco scent with a noticeable sandalwood note there’s Michael for Men by Kors.
UPDATE: Over time I get obvious spice, but at that point it’s quite dry and has hardly any sweetness. The idea that this is the “love child” of Eau Sauvage and Grey Flannel is hilarious, but not accurate (IMO).
UDPATE #2: I wrote the review above in 2014, and I just went over to the Check Cosmetics site, which says my old style bottle is from 2017 (batch code 7C02), so this suggests it is 2007 or 1997 (as some companies repeat the codes every ten years). My bottle was obtained in a swap from 2014 or earlier.

Way better overall than Paco Rabanne XS, even though they smell alike. It totally smells like cloves, tobacco and sandalwood.
Sillage was really good on my skin, I think everybody notice when you’re wearing it. Longevity is good too.

This used to be my signature scent in college and to this day I still enjoy it. With maturity, I have branched out and it no longer captivates me. I think I always keep a bottle around because it keeps me young and allows me to push back on that clock and remember when my hair was fuller, my pant size smaller and my outlook brighter. To this day, I still don’t smell it on too many people. Unique and pleasing isn’t a bad start.
    My Score 6.5

  57. :

    3 out of 5

It may not be an old cologne, of those classics that date back to the 70’s, for example, but is undoubtedly a classic of the male perfumery, in the less literal and more extensive sense of the word.
It was created in 1991, not just by one, but by two illustrious renowned perfumers: Rosendo Mateu (Puig, Carolina Herrera, Antonio Banderas, Paco Rabanne, etc.) and Carlos Benaim (Bvlgari, Avon, Cacharel, Calvin Klein, Ralph Lauren, etc.). It contains notes of neroli, Lavender and leaves of citrus fruits, in the output; geranium, clove and green pepper leaves, in the heart and sandalwood, amber and tobacco, at the base. Some people say that there are also notes of fern (at the top) and cedar (at the base of the fragrance).
The scent is strong, elegant and classic without being dated. It has a leathery and dry aspect as soon as applied on the skin. I consider it linear, because it only loses a little of the dry aspect, getting slightly creamy and woody, but not enough to have diversified facets.
The projection is deceptive because it is very good, although it seems that is no longer working. But some people claim that it was stronger in the past. The bottle is beautiful and although I don’t have the knowledge about the inspiration, some say that it was made to resemble a tie (it makes sense). The spray is quite generous!
Finally, it is a scent that fell in limbo in recent years, staying below the radar, but that remains an excellent choice for the man who doesn’t give up a beautiful and mature male scent in his collection.

I don’t think I could better describe what has already been said by others of this fragrance other than my own personal experience. I couldn’t stop wearing it until the bottle was drained. I just felt self assured and confident wearing this. It’s one of those fragrances you just KNOW is staying on you all day, like all CH perfume, like an extra layer of attitude- without the need for any body language. Eliminate posture, eye contact, stance, gestures and carriage; and Herrera for Men establishes your role in the world. Not an aggressive Alpha, but the Alpha who coolly glances up from his life to re-establish order. You know about the world. Get on with it.

Strong masculine tobacco, but the secret is that is blended with flowers, so the women find it irresitible every single time (it was created by Carolina herself to capture the women taste)
    Panty dropper? Panty melter!
    Timeless masterpice.

Someone below said that it reminds them of a man wearing a trench coat in the rain… and I couldn’t agree more.
The tobacco is the star of this cologne. To me, it’s everything good quality and elemental in a men’s fragrance. It’s textured, confident, fresh (clean), yet mellow, smoky and refined.
The trench coat in the rain puts me in mind of Bogart, smoking and staring out over a wet road in a dim light. It’s noir, masculine, classic. I am a woman and I spray this on often, because I like the way it makes me feel. It reminds me of my father, whom I remember fondly. The scent of freshly lit smokes and mint reminds me of him and the smell of his car. He was an elegant man. This fragrance captures that. It can lend such a feeling and sense to a woman, too.
And, I feel, the sense this perfume conveys in safety, comfort, protection. The way it feels as a woman cuddled up in an embrace with their man. The smell of their shirt, throat, the feel of their arms around you, the simmering fire.

Well Iam puzzled with this one. All the raving reviews and what I get are a distance apart from each other. The initial start is nice and unusual, manly fresh with lavender, neroli, lemon plus enough sharpness and tobacco + fougere nuances. What comes soon afterwards however leaves me wanting more, but not finding it. The scent changes its behaviour on skin which is a good thing in general, but the ash tray like tobacco and the muted curry are melting into a combo which results in the whole thing giving off an aura of those dark & sweet candies we had as kids. Comparisons have been made to XS, Eternity or Egoiste Platinum but for me Herrera For Men is much darker, like a mixture of Ungaro III and Fougere Bengale by Parfum d’Empire. Dark, romantic fougere & foody. To make it a great fougere however, an intelligently applied oakmoss is definitely missing. it would give and edge to this creation which is nice but too floating and candy like. still way better though then some of nowadays market offerings but not enough to be called a masterpiece in my humble opinion. Still struggeling to imagine Angelina Jolie wearing this one….I bought Herrera for men at the same time with Ferre for men and I have to say that both are very nice fragrances but Ferré beats Herrera on all levels. I give it more time anyways, because its still a very fresh encounter, maybe it will develop more as time proceeds…

Wow, another perfume that reminded me of my estranged dad. A couple hours after applying I sniffed my wrist and I immediately imagined my dad’s clean shaven leathery face and I thought “Dad…”. I don’t know if he wore this but I think I might get a bottle just so I can be reminded of him.

Why doesnt Fragrantica have a review of the all silver CHROME bottle of the rare HERRERA CONCENTREE?? I rememebr this bottle smelling it at the stands in the mall back in 2002 or 2003 for sale for 49.00 or so 🙁 I bought Herrera Ginger(brown bottle) back in day for 39.99 and 212 H20 for 45.00 I should have bought sensual vetiver (green bottle) back in 2002 as well I could have made a killing flipping it 😉

This is in my opinion the sexiest cologne out there. My husband wears this, and quite frankly I wouldn’t mind wearing it myself. Does anyone know of a similar scent for women?

I was so excited to acquire another bottle of this juice so many years later. Herrera for Men was first launched in 91′. When I was trying to finish post secondary, I splurged when money was tight and bought this FABULOUS frag. I remember the amazing aroma so I didn’t know what notes were being used…I just loved it !!!!!!
I walked into my usual frag store that carries frag which are no longer in production so when I came across Herrera for Men, I reminisce the memories of my younger years and recall how EXQUISITE this frag was from Herrera. Without any hesitations I bought a 100ml and wore it t
