Description

Halloween is the perfume presented in 1997. It was created by Max Gavarry and dedicated to a mysterious woman, a vamp. Soft and powdery violet, green lime and green banana notes open this romantic composition. The heart ticks in the rhythm of Casablanca magnolia, violet notes, seductive tuberose spiced with pepper notes. The base is milky – warm with sandalwood, aromatic incense, myrrh and Madagascar vanilla. The bottle was designed by Max Gavarry. It is available as 30, 50 and 100 ml EDT.

This was a very pretty surprise. Its violet with an aquatic freshness & a little musk. Very pretty & very long lasting on me. Most of the time when something is on my want list for a while its disappointing, not this. Im very happy with it & it doesnt remind me of any other perfume. So unique to me as well.

An ethereal scent. Really violet stands out. Kind of powdery sweet, light, mystical, non offensive yet special. Longevity is average to good depending on skin.
I like it but i pay no mind about it.

    To Pinktoe:
the halloween fregance line no longer belongs to the house of the Spanish designer Jesus del Pozo.
Now it is an independent brand that is still produced by the same company that did it, but under another name (the adresses are still the same).
It seems that these are different businesses than they once were.

I bought a full bottle as the name and description seemed right up my street. It’s… strange. I’m not even sure how to describe this fragrance. It’s ghostly, kind of elusive. I feel like I can’t quite get a good sense of the fragrance even though I’ve been wearing it for hours. It’s also very cold smelling to me. It brings to mind cold rain over a flower garden. I am definitely a fan of warm, musky vanilla scents so I am not yet making much sense of this scent. It is also a bit harsh and chemical smelling to me but somehow still pleasant.

Not really a review, but I’d love for Fragrantica to ammend something here. The Halloween line is not its own brand, it’s a range from Jesús de Pozo brand, the Spanish designer. If you look at the perfum boxes you’ll see they read J. Del Pozo above the name of the fragrance. I comment this because the other day I was looking for this fragrance and it surprised me that it was not entried under Jesús del Pozo, but under Halloween, as if it was its own brand. I didn’t mean this as a rant, just as a suggestion.

Short story short. It smells like one of those modelling clay. It’s aquatic and banana leaf a’right. But I feel like that green accord smells like it came from a succulent type of plant. It’s Fleshy, fresh and juicy.(The leaf ofcourse).Sniff it deeply closely on your skin and there’s a sour smell to it.It’s a floral perfume that’s got me confused. And strangely,I love it.

I always imagined Daphne (from Scooby Doo) wearing this perfume. The commercial campaign for Halloween was great back in the days. When I hold the bottle, I can see the commericial and the adds all over again in my mind. Feels nostalgic to wear it.
It’s a sort of spicy aquatic, with a bit of freesia. It’s a nice, fresh easy to wear fragrance. It also has a nice sillage and good lasting power, more than I can say about a lot of recent aquatics.

Blind bought this for $12 (1 oz) because I thought Id give it a try! The box looked cute and I was curious what ‘halloween’ is supposed to smell like. In my head I thought maybe something dark/musky and a little sweet (like a caramel apple!). Just the sweet smells of fall in general or candy on halloween night….
Welllllllllllllll I was sadly disappointed. This is just a soapy floral, very 90’s drugstore generic kind of scent. Not my kind of thing.
The bottle is also a lot cheaper looking in real life. The cap and the base are plastic painted silver. Very cheap. They are not actually metal.

I’d hoped for a sticky deep dark scent when I purchased this. Something that fit the name. To me this is more like Halloween candy. Like eating Banana laffy taffy while trick or treating in cool Fall air. This smells like scented dolls, candy necklaces, hairspray and a well tended garden. Not my type of scent, I will probably give it to my teen.

I was looking for a more grown-up version of Princess, which is one of my go-to cozy, sweet-floral scent, but feels a little immature. Maybe it’s the bottle, I don’t know.
Admittedly, the bottle here feels pretty cheap. The juice, however, is wonderful. Violet is my HG note, has been for years, but it’s so difficult to find something that does it right and that has decent longevity/sillage. This is soft but not light–sounds oxymoronic, I know, but it’s true!
Entering October, I think it’ll be perfect for scarves and cardigans and boots.

  14. :

This is all so true, I agree!
I admit I purchased Halloween specifically for the violet and aquatic notes. The idea of an aquatic violet is (almost) unheard of and extremely appealing, but I’m really let down (by my brain/nose?) with this. (I ought to admit that I’m having trouble with the hearing from my right ear at present, which may have played a part, and that I have been wearing a heavily musk dominant scent earlier in the day – probably not the best angle to have come at a violet based scent from.)
The only violet scent I have found that I can truly, thoroughly enjoy with complete success is MyQueen. My absolute holy grail violet. Somehow I rarely lose sight of the violet in that composition (behind the woods and pepper) for more than a few moments at a time. It is heavenly. (Nice to see this was your previous signature, DistantSamantha, so I think we’re on the same page with love over the elusive yet illustrious violet.)

Chimidoro (the reviewer below) described developing an anosmia to this perfume. That just tells you how big and important part the violet note plays in the original Halloween – the violet indeed is notorious for making the wearer anosmic to its scent. That’s probably one of the biggest reasons why violet is so intriguing note for me; “now you see me, now you don’t”, the fairy of the floral notes.
This fairy definitely lives close to a waterfall, or maybe a mysterious pond in the middle of a rainforest. The original Halloween is a one in the million perfume – once you’ve tested it, you will always recognize it, whenever you meet!

  16. :

When first sprayed I could smell green coconut and banana leaf. Then anosmia kicked in. I get nondescript white floral, coconut and myrrh. Possibly hairspray.
    Then just myrrh.
Up close it’s myrrh and pepper.
    Very strange.
    Zero violet.
For my best friend, smelling this on me, the opening was an aquatic scent with dessert melon and a strong, natural, non-sweetened violet.
The violet quickly softened and the dessert melon took leave. This developed in the air, to my best friend, as mainly an aquatic.
We both get something different from this.
    EDIT, 08/10
    Second wear, days later:
Started like an aquatic hair product, then became oddly smoky….
FINALLY got violet after wearing for around an hour, along with myrrh and dried (caramelized?) banana. I could have almost sworn there was a touch of milk chocolate a little earlier, too.
My best friend has just said: “It smells different every time you wear it.”
Amazing, really. I wonder if this has been reformulated many times. My bottle is current, brand new.

For me, this is a study in two things: How the individual notes work with one’s chemistry and nose (or not); and how the names of scents shape expectations.
So, the second, first. Even knowing the name comes from the date of release, there is nothing connecting Halloween, autumn, Fall, Goth, witches/black cats/pumpkins and this scent. If you really want to stretch, I think an image of a filmy, insubstantial spirit that sighs in passing, and a faint whiff of Casablanca lilies wilted on a new grave are possibly closer to the mark.
This is a clean, light, sheer fragrance. I cannot detect, OOB or on my skin, ANY violet-y, dry, spicy, peppery, woody, vanilla, or warmth. None. And Youth Dew, Cinnabar, and chypres are my faves. They just are not present. It is all very sheer white flowers, moonlight and water. It is not soapy, it is not sweet, and it is definitely not powdery. I sense nothing plastic, banana-y, smoky, or incense-y.
To me, this is what a water sprite would smell like, while moon-bathing.
Light, inoffensive, office friendly, and highly underrated.
Silage is close-to-medium and longevity is about 4-6 hours.

I am down to the last few spritzes of a 100 ml bottle of Halloween; my second bottle in about fifteen years, and I am just about to order a third bottle of it. This is an uncommon event for me as I have only made repurchases of any given fragrance in my rather sizable collection on maybe three or four occasions over the last twenty years.
Halloween, which in the early 2000s had more information available regarding its backstory and notes, was declared ready for production on Halloween Day and so its designer-of-label — Jesus del Pozo — named it for the holiday. Other than that the scent itself has nothing to do with autumn, goth culture, or with candy corn.
The fragrance itself is sweet indeed but its sweetness, to my nose, takes a backseat to its ozonic accord, listed at one time as “Seas of Alaska.” For me, It is a big, bracing, icy thing, indeed, and is just wonderful in muggy weather, or just any time a bright, refreshing, ozonic blast is desired. Petit grain gives a discernibly citric opening (it smells a bit like lime here), while notes of magnolia, green banana, and tuberose combine to heighten the effect of icy freshness, and with violet and lily-of-the-valley adding a hint of soft floral powder. Myrrh lends bitterness and, along with black pepper (which is the non-abrasive sort), a bit of warmth, but you’ll have to make a conscious effort to check for it. Incense offers a mild smoky quality (very mild since I generally dislike incense accords in perfumery but I am not bothered by the one in this fragrance.)
Lastly, this fragrance never pretends to provide a snapshot of nature itself and will doubtlessly disappoint anyone who only looks for or expects nature-identical scents since the artifice in this fragrance is quite obvious.
As someone who dabbles in natural perfumery via the use of absolutes and other plant extracts, I have come to realize that, for me, “au natural” doesn’t always “hit the spot,” so to speak.

I’m constantly on a hunt for violet notes in perfumes:)
And I found a perfect bright powdery violet here!! It’s sooo delicious! I can’t get enough of it! Accompanied by vanilla and banana leaves it makes me regret that I didn’t discover this fragrance before.
Strangely enough, I can’t always detect any aquatic notes that are listed here. If they were distinct, I would definitely smell them, coz I hate them badly! Or maybe that’s the first perfume where they are so well-balanced that don’t seem masculine and annoyingly fresh. Actually Halloween’s sounding depends on weather conditions.
I wear it only in hot weather. Coz when it’s chilly outside it opens differently. Some cheap and unacceptably simple notes come out. Violet, pepper and vanilla turn into endless sea notes with slight hint of powder. So I won’t advice it for winter.
To me Halloween is absolutely SWEET fragrance. Many recognize it as fresh and cold but I disagree. At least that’s not how I imagine freshness.
Longevity and sillage are moderate. I’m so happy to have found such a cheap perfume with such a nontrivial scent.I love almost all perfumes that were released in the late 90s.They are so different from today’s conveyor fragrances, that are imposed on us daily through annoying adds.

Did Jesus del Pozo sell the license for this? Why are they listed separately under the Halloween name now? o.O

Buy this scent if you like offbeat, different smells. But it has a haunting trick-or-treat beauty to it that I’ve never smelled before. You can spray it on and get some big whiffs of it, then it will be gone and out of mind… and again later you will smell it and like a timed bell, it goes off again and you remember you sprayed on Halloween!

  23. :

When I first got into this fragrance I read the notes and thought it would be a smoky incense similar to L’Agent from Agent Provocateur which I really like.
    It’s not.
What you get here is a masculine aftershave type of scent with a fresh ozonic and aquatic edge. It’s invigorating and energizing and appropriate for morning after your shower and work/office. This is a bit too masculine on me.
Despite the floral notes of violet and magnolia, of which the violet is the big player, there is a soapiness with light traces of myrrh and musk. I can see how it’s unisex – fresh top (not aldehydes but fresh as aldehydes) banana scent, florals, and soft incense.
This is pretty simple and easy to wear and doesn’t really come off as a Halloween Goth perfume.
    But I like it.
    Very soothing.

    Fragrance Review For Halloween
    Jesus Del Pozo & Halloween
    Top Notes
Sea Notes Banana Leaves Petit Grain Violet
    Middle Notes
Violet Tuberose Magnolia Lily of the Valley Pepper
    Base Notes
    Myrrh Incense Vanilla Sandalwood
Toilet Water For Your Halloween Party
Halloween October 31st is coming up and I’d heard of this fragrance’s existence, read the reviews, and naturally I drew the conclusion that this fragrance would not evoke Halloween, witches, ghouls, ghosts and vampires.
They were right. I was right.
Quite true to the detailed descriptions by talented Fragrantica reviewers, this is a pretty but cheap, relatively simple unisex aquatic floral scent.
I thought this was rather like a hybrid of aquatic and ozonic frags like Acqua di Gio by Armani, Davidoff Cool Water but also comparable to powdery scents like Galliano and sometimes a lighter misty version of De Profundis by Serge Lutens. Some have also noted a similarity to Eclat D’Arpege by Lanvin but I don’t quite see it. Eclat is so much better, even if it’s as light and equally as short lived as this scent.
Fortunately for me, I like all of those fragrances.
But it can be so much more.
I like the opening of ozonic calone. If you’re familiar with this chemical in perfumery it’s fresh and like they captured a sea breeze scent.
This opening can be pretty cold not ice cold but like literally being exposed to the elements of the ocean with the cold winds and breezes and mists.
It’s masculine like an after shower astringent or barbershop after shave scent.
Fresh, very fresh and watery and energizing. If this was any stronger they would be aldehydes. But the calone and sea note is probably the most enjoyable part of this scent.
The floral notes include a big violet
There are 2 notes of violet so this is all about that violet although because of the water, it’s like violet water for a bath. It’s toilet water with violet scents, and almost, almost a lavender
The white florals joining the violet include magnolia tuberose and lily of the valley.
They are soapy flowers, nothing too impressive, very easy to wear and unisex.
Nothing about it is either heightened femininity in a bottle nor aggressively masculine.
This is the same kind of cool soapy wet floral scent you get from Acqua di Gio and also to a degree similar to Agua de Violeta, and Waterford Lismore.
If you like those light flowers in wet water type of smells, this is a treat.
The dry down is warm sun tan lotion and smells of soft incense and myrrh with a light woodsy touch of sandal.
I wish the sandalwood was stronger. The whole thing is very light and more of a body mist.
Why would they call it Halloween for God’s sake?
Anyhow I think I’ll have this fragrance open to my guests to use in the bathroom during my Halloween party. I like to incorporate perfumes and fragrances into my parties.
I think this is very very easy to wear, inoffensive, casual and a fragrance to wear safely to work, the office.
The downside is the short life, weak sillage, and.concentration. It is a light watery mist.
This is not mind blowing nor a statement perfume. Even with a moniker like Halloween, this is no Goth perfume either.
I like how the bottle resembles Serge Lutens De Profundis.
I think that it serves as a good intro to violet and somewhat powdery melancholy type of scents.
Sometimes this has a medicinal or mothballs in a hospital type of scent.
    Wear this if you like
    De Profundis Serge Lutens
    Galliano by John Galliano
Acqua di Gio by Giorgio Armani
    Cool Water by Davidoff

This has nothing to do with Halloween or fall in my opinion… I had to have it because of the name it is nice but totally branded wrong.I smell allot of bergomant, bannanas ,sea salt, a little violet and sandelwood appears ..its an interesting blend that I like…one thing I hate is how cheap the bottle looks and fells the metal is so thin and wimmsy and not solid the cap is cheap and the glass is weak and not hardy … Any who its an okay perfume in really cheap packaging and has nothing to do with Halloween or a vampy kind of mysterious girl like its advertised..

This one I had for a while; it’s an odd scent. Aquatic, flowery with a spicy background. It is long lasting; it wears close to your skin, inoffensive enough to wear to work. I wouldn’t wear for Halloween though…:D.

Halloween makes me think of autumn. A fragrance which brings freshness as a light wind and depth in the composition as a scent of colourful leaves falling down on a wet day.
It was my very first parfum as a teenager and I always have a bottle of it! I just love this fragrance!

  29. :

I got a sample of this and I was kind of unsure about it due to the the different reviews, but once I got a whiff of it I found it to be very lovely. I didn’t get the aquatic vibe that some mentioned, I thought it was very light and pleasant. I love violets and I definitely got that from it. It’s very refreshing and a nice spring or even summer scent. I’m impressed.

Once I finally let go of my preconceived notion of what a fragrance named “Halloween” should be, I was able to fall in love with this beauty. But honestly, it took me quite a while to let go of that connection, or rather, lack of connection between name and scent. I really hated it for much too long. Silly me!
This is as far from Halloween as one might find themselves. This is warm sunshine, crisp water, succulent blossoms, lush greenery. A beautiful tropical paradise teeming with new fresh life.
At first sniff, Halloween is very aquatic, which is not a favorite of mine. But it is quick to warm up with a creamy tuberose floating beneath the waters. The fresh bitter green scent of wind-battered banana leaves. I also smell sun-warmed skin.
This may sound crazy but Halloween makes me feel like a water lily floating atop azure blue waters, soaking up warm sun rays, 15 minutes after a humid tropical downpour.
Halloween is a transporting scent if you are able to relax and let go. I’m glad I was able to finally do that because it’s such a beautiful place to be swept away to.

Such a beautiful frosted/aquatic floral with a powdery drydown one of a kind this perfume is very well done because I usually don’t like floral fragrances!

  32. :

    5 out of 5

No doubt this is a perfume for a sorceress: mischieving, taunting, exquisitely malevolent, playfuly roguish…Does Halloween smell like Halloween? It evokes most certainly the smell of the rain, but there is nothing sad or autumn-like in this rain, nothing funeral. It is more like a quick summer storm in the beach of an exotic country in the tropics.
Perhaps it is percieved today as not being very original, having it been released when the ozonic perfumes were in its heyday. Nonetheless this is a well-crafted and balanced fragance, with a perfect contrast between the cold, green notes of the water and the banana peel, the powdery smell of lilies, the sensual richness of the tuberose, the strength of the spices, the keen notes of the frankincense and the swetness of the vanilla. Sillage and lasting power are extremely good, so do not overapply it.

  33. :

    5 out of 5

I have a mini that has lost its color and turned yellow (in some cases the juice in minis is a different color than in the full bottle but I suspect this one to be old, probably from the time of release). The aquatic character of it reminds me of Davidoff Cool Water, but it features two of the flowers I have a very hard time with – violet and lily-of-the-valley – and it is not doing much for me, to be honest. Surely the name is ironic. Will be passing this one on.

  34. :

    5 out of 5

This was a blind buy, I was looking for an aquatic scent, and there where enough reviews leaning towards a friendly aquatic perfume that I decided to give a try. There is an aquatic edge upon first spray, but also a very predominate generic floral scent. After a couple minutes, that aqautic edge disappears, and the generic floral scent is left behind, and although it doesn’t pack a punch continually, the smell doesnt go away. I still smell it on me a day later. This perfume might be more apealling towards a beginner, however this is not for the refined of noses. I was disappointed, but didn’t have very many expectations to start with. So in short, I didn’t hate it, but by no means did I like or even love it.

  35. :

    3 out of 5

All I could smell in this at first was citrus and peppery spices- it started out as kind of sharp and almost medicinal smelling, but it very soon began to be sweeter and more flowery. I was drawn to this mostly because of the name, and was a little disappointed that hardly any of the listed notes-and none of the ones I’m able to smell in it- are very evocative of autumn or anything dark and mysterious. The name doesn’t suit this fragrance very well, I’m afraid, but I did know enough to expect that going in. The scent is light, clean, and pleasant, but just not one I am strongly attracted to. I think what I get the most is a combination of violet and maybe magnolia along with something fresh-smelling (possibly the marine note?). It smells like spring or early summer much more than it smells like Halloween. It’s nice enough, but I wouldn’t buy a full bottle of this. Gave away my mini version.

  36. :

I blind bought this about a week ago and am just trying it today. I’ve had it on for about 30 minutes and my first impression is it smells along the lines of Eternity Aqua. I also notice the more I try to smell it and decipher it, the more I become anosmic to it. I will have to wear it a few more times to decide whether I like it or not

  37. :

    5 out of 5

Is definitely floral and marine. Is a very “pleasant” and simple scent, still original. For some reason in my country (Argentina) you can always find good deals and end up being very affordable compared with other fragrances. Therefore everyone would smell of Halloween like 3 years ago. I liked when it was original and unique. Sillage is very poor and longevity the same at least on my skin. Around 3 hours.
I would definitely not repurchase this again. Lucky I got it as a gift and just the smallest version (30ml).

  38. :

Unfortunately didn’t work with my skin chemistry. Good longevity though. 100ml bottle up for swap if anyone wants it. Will even consider swapping the full bottle for decants of some of my “wants” too. Peace 🙂

The fragrance is floral;powdery but wet;and az fresh az a mild wind raising from jungles and seas and a garden full of violet and other flowers
I’m not a floral-perfum lover…my best is vanilla/musky…but this one is kinda exception…cause it feels really wet and fresh also complicated allong being so simple…wearing halloween I can’t decide it feels warm or cold…it more seems like none of them or both of them.I feel it can be used all seasons except a cold winter.I even don’t know I really love this one or don’t like it..it’s a sexy floral women perfum or a girly fresh one…so strange!!
It is sweet but not too much and has a bit delicious taste for me…longevity is ok..not too much but more than what I expected for such a fresh. Cool cheapy

Because of the cheap price and seeing it everywhere, I was thinking it should be some ordinary aquatic soapy masculine type of scent that everybody wears in the summer, but what a surprise! It is quite nice, original and sophisticated. I do not know if it makes sense, but It smells warm and cool at the same time 🙂 I understand why they put it in an oriental floral group. I like it!

I will come to completely agree with jlfears. I would smell it on the streets for years and loved it before i eventually found out its name (a girl working on a store was wearing it and i grabbed the chance to ask her) and lucky me,the day i knew what is it called and went to buy it it had a big discount (100ml for 32 euros). Moderate longeivity and sillage, its cool notes make me wanting to wear it on summer as a day go-to fragrance mostly!

I’m so confused. So many feel that it’s warm; so many feel that it’s sweet. Almost everyone thinks it’s spicy. This was, hands down, one of the COLDEST scents I’ve ever encountered.
On me, it wasn’t even “aquatic” as much as Ozonic ~ and an Ozonic powerhouse. It was the Ozone High Priestess, with some cool whiffs of a powdery floral, a hint of overripe melon, and possibly some aquatic chemical overload. Odd, odd, odd.
I didn’t get anything resembling a spice, but I did get some floral in the beginning.
This went on for days, and I mean that *almost* literally. It lasted for 36 hours (and I went dancing and showered in that time). I’ve never had a perfume get stronger as I wore it, but this one did.
I need to test this again now that my nose is sharper, and I can pick out notes like a dog. I haven’t smelled this since 2004.

    oriental floral?!!! come oooooon!
this one is a tipical floral aquatic imo. a very long lasting one.i took a shower after 6 hrs and still could smell it.
opening is loud, almost like a punch in your face with a feast full of wet viollets and after 10 min the aqua note starts to grow and doesnt stop for the rest of this perfume’s life.
after couple of houres it gets soft and even but still noticeable.lots of people around me like halloween so this one is a crowd pleaser butfor me sth is off in it and aquatic note is too much, causes me nausia… badly.
if you like uncomplicated violets and dont mind aquatic feature its a good cheapy.but try before buy…diffenitly!
    cold,cold,coooooold viola!

Very overpowering and loud. These flowers are very intense. Don’t buy unless you’re fond of strong floral scents. Just too intense for me 🙁

Yes, this is a marine based fragrance, but not in a teenager way. it’s also spicy, which makes this an unusual one. I really don’t pick up much violet, I smell lavender and muguet. I find this similar to an Yves Rocher fragrance from the mid 90s that came in a pebble organic shaped bottle.
Update: I’m not an aqua perfume person, but this is nice when it’s sweltering hot. I find this an unexpected blend of citrus, aqua, warm autumn spices. An elegant man could easily pull this off.

In the vast island of Misfit Perfumes, this would be one of the first scents voted to stay on the island.
The initial notes are…odd. Smells like powdery moth balls on me. Thirty minutes later, the florals come through and save this from being tossed in the active volcano as a sacrifice.

I really like perfumes with violet notes, and Halloween is no exception. It’s a very aquatic fragrance so it’s perfect for summer days as it will not get too cloying. Longevity and lasting power are average (few hours on my skin). I think a lot of people can wear this perfume as it’s very inoffensive and just basically smells very nice. Good job Jesus Del Pozo!

This is an amazing perfume, it brings on such contrasting emotions! I used to hate it, now I really like it, even though it’s not really my type. When I sprayed it on my wrist, my watch smelled with it for several… weeks! When I sprayed it on my neck and sweater, I couldn’t smell it at all… I’d call the category DARK AQUATIC. Recently I’ve been looking for new inspirations and I definitely found one – after so many years of disliking this perfume! I love violets but I don’t really feel them here, as they are overwhelmed by aquatic and lotus notes. But maybe they’re the real reason for the mysterious character of this perfume? I suppose they are…

It reminds of another cheap frag. for teenagers… nice smell and cost saving. But nowadays I don’t appreciate that kind of smell, it’s pretty linear, poor longevity and no silage. Plus the price for this perfume is way too high!
