This is my second review of Ginger Essence. More of an addendum —
This morning I sprayed Ginger Essence on my sleeve — I suppose I was in the mood for it — and found something new and delightful. After the zesty top notes dissipated, I found shades of a natural scent I have been seeking in perfume-form for a while now: the blossoms of a Russian Olive tree!
The Russian Olive is related to osmanthus, but has its own, distinct sweet, nutty, creamy floral/woody smell that carries quite well in the breeze for maybe only a week around May or June where I live in the US. I detect some of the butteriness of gardenia and saccharine sharpness of honeysuckle in the Russian Olive blossom, but turned down to 1. On paper (or screen), there is nothing to suggest that there are woods or florals lurking in Ginger Essence, so imagine my surprise.
How did I find this elusive odor in a ginger-based scent that I thought I knew inside and out by now? I’m not sure. Maybe this is only a happy olfactory hallucination, but on this cold October morning, I will happily take it.
I’m curious now to see if I notice this same facet when it’s applied to the skin. Suddenly, my nearly-full second bottle that has been neglected as of late is seeming more precious…

I’m with lilsockmonkey on the nostalgia aspect of “Ginger Essence” and I have a great deal of respect for the role of nostalgia in scent affinity. I think it matters and shouldn’t be disregarded because emotional memory is so heavily tied to scent.
But even though “Ginger Essence” is, without a doubt, a descendant of the Zen Spa Scents movement of the ’90’s, it’s a really satisfying, palate cleansing, one tune wonder. It’s subtle, yet distinctive. The ginger has a little hint of a dusty hum to it but is mostly astringent. The citruses only act as air neutralizers for any interference from external scents attempting to impose upon the warm, soft, woodsy fizzy pop buzz of sweet ginger root.
It has the confidence of an original, of being a scent that launched a genre and it’s hard to think of the “organic, natural” overthrow of the cosmetics world of the past decade happening without this tranquil, very natural seeming scent inspiring a shift in beauty care perspective. As far as the imagery it jogs goes, it’s bamboo planks making a path into spare woods, dry, red earth, conifers and roots. It’s ginger tea and early sunrises. I’m glad I’ve invited it back home. I’ve missed this low maintenance, wise old friend.
Who will like this: If you like woods, pomanders and spices, tea scents, sandalwood, cedar, pine blends and spare, “spa” like compositions.

I do love this, but I wonder if I’d feel the same if I were trying it for the first time today. I remember being a little obsessed with it when it first came out – I found it so spicy and sophisticated and I ran through a bottle very quickly.
My nose has evolved, obviously, because now I don’t find it sophisticated, but I still like it a lot. It’s a fizzy gingerale scent, not really all that spicy, mostly just fresh and uplifting. I actually find the sillage and longevity pretty good.
More than anything, though, it’s nostalgic – it smells like the early 2000s and reminds me specifically of one trip I took to NYC which I’ll always remember fondly. It was a different time and I’m a different person, but I’m happy to have this in my collection once again.

This is more of a pricey body mist in a glass bottle than a perfume. It smells fresh and lovely, obvious citrus and ginger notes, but it is quite literal — no real nuance or surprises in the dry down. I agree with other reviewers who say that it wears quite close to the skin and rears its head when your body gets warm (making it great for summer), but this also means that *most* of the time it’s not making any sort of statement.
All of that being said about its general weakness, it seems to gain some strength and staying power when layered with other perfumes. I use it frequently as a base when wearing Clinique Happy: Ginger Essence on bare skin and undergarments, then Happy on top of clothing and dried, styled hair. It adds some depth to the sweet, fruity notes of Happy.
I am always happy to receive Ginger Essence as a gift, but heed my advice and save your own money for something more complex and sophisticated.

The initial blast of flat and sweet ginger ale disappointed. Within 15 minutes that faded to leave an invigorating light, spicy ginger skinscent. I layer this with white florals and gourmands.

I love it and so does my chemistry. My skin usually devours perfumes but somehow, this one lingers on me for hours and hours.
This is a very serene and happy fragrance. Very refreshing, but I find it is quite interesting. I am in love with the dry down- gentle and pure but focused. The simplicity gives this very effervescent scent more power. It knows what it is.
The real ginger ale note (not Schweppes) gives way to a luminous and lingering herbal citrus aura. Great. Love it. Very spring time and outdoor summer day time.

Ginger Essence is a love for me. I work at a department store where I can spritz any perfume I’m in the mood for, and I find myself using Ginger when I don’t know what I’m in the mood for! It’s also the first perfume I voted into three seasons: winter, spring, summer. I almost voted it into fall, but there are so many fall perfumes I figured I would save Ginger Essence for the rest of the year!
Ginger Essence smells natural and fresh to me. An accurate impression of fresh ginger but without the bite. After seeing the other notes listed here, I think I can pick up the almost salty quality of lime and I know I smell the sweetness of bergamot. There are no base notes, but they aren’t needed with the warmth of ginger. Thanks to ginger, we have a fragrance warm enough to be cozy in the winter, sharp enough to cut through the dampness of spring, and cool enough to refresh in the summer.
This perfume lasts though it does not project. It is unlikely anyone will ask what perfume you are wearing, same as if you had applied essential oil. Some days I like to keep my scents to myself. Finally, this is one of the few perfumes that comes in a travel spray rather than a rollerball. I can’t imagine a better fragrance to refresh with.
Ginger lovers, start your day with Jo Malone Dark Amber & Ginger Lily then keep it smoldering with Ginger Essence. You will thank me later.

Just bought origins ginger essence at an origins shop. At first, i was trying to recall the scent, like white tea and ginger of bath and body works or spain’s angel’s breath but what stands out is the pureness of ginger and other citrus combined. The scent lingers for hours and what others may think or say that sillage is weak, i can say that its staying power is perfect to last for longer
hours. It’s silent but deeply hides in the skin.it shows itself when someone gets closer or when your body heats up. Very sophisticated. Great for all occasions and environment-friendly. It is sensually delicate and smooth. A must have potion!
By the way, this is for women, not for men!

I really like this one. Very strong lemon citrus to it and a spicy ginger. Just a hint of sweetness and smells very clean yet feminine. I would wear any season especially in California or other warm-moderate climates.

  10. :

This is very fresh and I tend to wear it when I’m fighting off a cold or I didn’t get enough sleep. It wakes me up. Other people have noticed it and complimented me on it. I can see it as a fall fragrance as well as a warm weather fragrance. It’s not particularly sexy or super feminine but it is nice and clean and you will probably get compliments when you wear it. Even though it is a rather singular note, I find it unique.

  11. :

This is really wonderful in the heat. I am first aware of all the fresh juicy citrus notes which are closely followed by the ginger. Please don’t think for a minute that the citrus notes are at all sharp. If any citrus note dominated then it would be the lime. Think more of a delicious refreshing citrus presse. Fresh but with just the right amount of sweetness.
The ginger is very true to itself with some zing but without being harsh. This fragrance basically takes the best aspects of these notes and creates something very easy to wear. This is pretty much a linear fragrance.
It’s a shame it doesn’t have greater longevity but thats the nature of these notes. I will give it a boost with the matching body lotion.
If you love refreshin, juicy fragrances then do try this one.

Last winter while in Macy’s I asked what their top selling fragrance was. The answer: Origins Ginger Essence. I tried it and was unimpressed…I love to eat ginger and drink ginger tea, but the skin scent didn’t feel feminine enough for me. Well, it’s May now and I tried it again while at the mall and WOW…I’m absolutely loving it! This is perfect for spring and summer because it is so light, clean and positively refreshing! No headache with this one and the dry down is really lovely. I ended up buying a full bottle today and I couldn’t be happier. It will be my go-to scent for summer!

I LOVE this fragrance and this is among the first of my wardrobe when I started to really build a fragrance collection. I love the smell of ginger and wanted something sparkly, refreshing, bright and energizing. I read the reviews on here and this sounded like exactly what I wanted. Luckily the mall near here actually DOES have this fragrance (a little short on choices here) and tried it out and took it home. I also have a ginger lotion that from Origins that goes well with it and helps the longevity and I have also used Jo Malones’ ginger and nutmeg body lotion with it and that also helps. Because the one complaint I have about it is that it only lasts about 3-4 hours on me. But this is enough to get me thorough my morning or a summer evening out. You do really have to like ginger though to really enjoy this. But it is a bright, fresh, happy ginger, and fairly linear. It is the star and that is the reason I love it.

I ADORE this perfume. Had it years ago and will definitely get it again. It is fresh, vital and haunting. If you love ginger you’ll like this fragrance.

Bubbly, fizzy, citrusy, spiced, hot, sweet, tarty, cooling…Ginger Essence is simple, and yet, very complex. It is like a mixture of all the good things. Cheerful and innocent, it makes me to think about the Coke, which, like GE, is sweet, and yet spicy, tangy and refreshing. It is like a shot of hapiness, well-being and optimism in a bottle. Perfect for gloomy days, like this one. For me, this works more like an aromatherapeutic product rather than a cologne or perfume. Very recommendable, although I find it to be seriously overpriced.

I love Ginger Essence. It’s a very simple fragrance and it lasts a long time too. I like any frag with ginger in it. Origin’s Ginger Essence is a perfect summer scent and you can spray a lot and it’s never overpowering. If a fragrance had a mood this could be happy.

I went shopping at my local grocery store, and used the wipes they had at the door to disinfect my cart handles. The wipes had an awesome ginger scent that I couldn’t get out of my head. It reminded me of the ginger scrub I had once gotten from the Origins shop nearby, so I popped in hoping it came in a perfume. And it did. It smelled great from the tester.
Although I’m usually not an impulsive buyer, I really craved a ginger scent so I came home with one. It smells like freshly grated ginger, linear but soothingly so. Most likely I will only wear this in the fall and winter since I don’t enjoy spicy scents in warm weather. Sillage is good, but ephemeral. I basically wear this scent at home, so I don’t mind reapplying.

  18. :

    5 out of 5

Wonderful fresh ginger scent that smells of coca cola but sillage is minimal and logevity is non existent. Maybe about 10 minutes…

  19. :

    4 out of 5

J’adore this fragrance, but on me it only seems to last about 10 minutes. The sillage seems to be nonexistent. It would be the perfect summer fragrance if only it lasted longer.
I’m a child of the ’70s, and as a teen was very fond of a hugely-selling drugstore scent, Love’s Fresh Lemon. It was a clean citrusy cologne, but had undertones of ginger (at least on me) and bergamot, and would actually last the better part of a day. When I spritz Ginger Essence, it transports me back…
One of the reviewers commented that she used it in her bathroom, and it made the room feel like a spa–I do that, too!

Fun and gingery crisp, citrus with a hint of floral. It is not complex or moody, just a fresh blast of citrus softened by ginger. Simple and refreshing just as it is. Nice.

the lovely signature fragrance of one of my dear friends. this is how i first smelled it.
if it wasn’t hers, and i didn’t have a long list of other (pricey!) perfumes i want, i’d have it in a second.
so few perfumes so accurately and daringly choose to take on the unadulterated scent of ginger. many find the scent strong and assaulting, which i guess is why, but i think it is super sensual and intoxicating. this smells a couple hours after you cut open a fresh piece of ginger and rub it on your wrists. this is one of the only perfumes i’ve found that’s done it right, and not tried to water down the scent with equally strong scents. i wonder how demeter’s ginger scent holds up to this.

  22. :

Love it! Short to medium longevity which means NATURAL! Awakening and Euphoric scent!

  23. :

    5 out of 5

Ginger Essence is a fun and effervescent perfume that is perfect for warm weather. On my skin its a warm, softly spicy scent with a hint of indistinct florality in the dry down which also seems to have ambroxan as a base note. Its warmer and rounder than the listed notes suggest because of this softer base. Radiant and completely wearable, the only downside is the lack of longevity– 2 hours at most on my skin.
On a side note, this smells very close to the scent of the Benefit brand blush named Dandelion.

  24. :

    3 out of 5

I LOVE this stuff, but it only last about 1 minute on me 🙁 at first it smells like a fizzy ginger soda but IF u can catch anything lingering on you after 10 minutes, then all the ginger is gone and I only smell Orange Blossoms or Neroli. If it lasted long, had great projection and smelled just like fizzy ginger then I would love to buy it.

  25. :

    3 out of 5

I like the fact that this fragrance is really refreshing. It has the same sparkly, fizzy smell as a glass of ginger ale. Others often enjoy the way it smells; it’s spicy and unusual. My only complaint is that it doesn’t project as much as I would like. A little does not go a long way in this case… I try to apply this one somewhat liberally, or else it’s more like wearing a body spray, as Englishrose mentioned below. Putting it on your clothes could also help it to last longer. If I put it on in the morning, I can usually catch a whiff or two in the early evening.

This is a delicious, light fragrance. Unfortunately, I have been completely spoiled by Jo Malone’s incredible Nutmeg and Ginger cologne , bath oil and body cream, which have all of the positive clean spicy qualities of this scent, but with a much greater intensity and depth. I purchased both fragrances at approximately the same time , and immediately fell in love with Jo Malone’s Nutmeg and Ginger. It’s a scrumptious, fresh , warm and comforting fragrance , and it lasts all day on me. I find that Origins Ginger Essence is a much lighter and much more lemony/gingery fragrance, almost like a body spray rather than a cologne. It is much more fleeting and insubstantial, and will probably work perfectly in the warm summer months. For the fall and winter, I definitely prefer Jo Malone’s Nutmeg and Ginger, which I absolutely love. It outclasses this fragrance by a mile. But that doesn’t mean Ginger Essence doesn’t deserve a spot in my collection. It’s a sparkling, effervescent lovely summer fragrance that will be perfect on hot summer days when I want something light and refreshing to wear. A very nice fragrance, and definitely worh buying if you like clean, spicy, gingery scents, as I do.

  27. :

This is an easy fragrance for me to wear for everyday. Non-offensive, dries down warm and citrusy on my skin. Has medium staying power. Doesn’t project too far, so I can wear it and enjoy it without having to worry about offending anyone around me.

  28. :

    4 out of 5

I wore this years ago when I worked as a massage therapist and needed a scent that smelled natural. Now I question that thought since this is definitely not a relaxing smell! Anyway, very fresh, effervescent, juicy, refreshing. I liked it a lot, but for some reason was insecure about wearing it.
Like if someone got a whiff and didn’t know it was ginger, they would think I stunk. Silly? Probably. Haven’t worn it since though.

  29. :

I love this. It’s a bit like lush’s ginger but has a bit more floral underneath so I find it a bit more sophisticated and wearable but still with all the ginger tones.

  30. :

Smells like coke bottle lollies and summer parties and fresh, crisp mornings.
This is citrusy happiness in a bottle for me.

  31. :

I found this in my perfume wardrobe today, a really hot day in England. For days I haven’t been able to wear any perfume, as I’ve been feeling like everything is too much, too strong, too loud. But this!
What a little gem this is, lemony, gingery, a real tonic! Zingy without being too citrusy and sharp! Very sunny, a bit like a cologne.
Perfect to spray on after a shower in the summer. Sillage is ok, lasting power leaves much to ask, but it’s part of it’s charm for me. On me, the bergamot really comes out after an hour or two, and leaves a quite dry scent of that and ginger.

  32. :

    3 out of 5

I wanted this to smell like the lotion and unfortunately it just doesn’t. It’s much less citrus-y to me. It has absolutely 0 staying power on me, and I’m not usually one to complain about it but honestly it’s probably the worst I own. I will put about 15 sprays on me and by the time I’m out the door, it’s gone already. I wouldn’t buy this again, for sure.

  33. :

    3 out of 5

Pretty and certainly gingery, but fleeting.
This has a particular place in my collection though, because it works just like ginger tea for me – that is, is stops me feeling nauseated! So if I’m a bit queasy this is the one I reach for.
Wonder if it would work well on a long sea voyage?

  34. :

    5 out of 5

I like this fragrance because its fresh, zingy and citrussy without being sharp. Perfect for summer. On my skin, the smell is soft, warming and comforting but doesn’t seem to last long – the pleasure is soon over. I wish they made an EDP version.
I have a confession to make, even though I like this fragrance a lot, for some reason my boyfriend does not. So, I use it throughout my home as a room fragrance.
It reminds me of the smell of an expensive spa, so I use it in my bathroom, and the result is wonderful, my visitors always comment on how lovely my home smells!

  35. :

    5 out of 5

Effervescent gingery joy. Too bad I purchased the rollerball, though–fragrance is completely gone by the time I get to work.

  36. :

    5 out of 5

This perfume is fresh and smells like ginger lemon and loads of sugar. The dry down is particularly sugary, which feels a bit cloying. I have only acquired this recently but I can swear I have smelt it many many times on other people on the train. It is fresh and if you love the smell of ginger, you would love it. I wish the dry down was a little less sweet thought.

  37. :

    4 out of 5

This smells very foody-sweet to me, like ginger syrup or gingerbread, as opposed to a more exotic gingery floral scent. It’s not for me.

  38. :

    5 out of 5

Incredible – Men and women give me compliments often! It has been my staple for years. My husband loves it!!! My kids even say something nice when I wear it. I enjoy the crisp and clean feeling when I wear it. I love ginger with the citrus. I layer Ginger Rush lotion for some warm spicy depth.I wore White Linen in my teens. I like crisp citrus, subtle white florals with a touch of spicy or a dry wood. I also love bergamot. Ginger Essence does not give me a headache like most scents. There is an “Intensified” version of this fragrance that last longer. It works well yet does not last long.
Top Notes-Bergamot, Orange, Grapefruit, Lemon, Lime .
Middle Notes-Ginger, Nutmeg, Clove, Coriander, Violet Leaves, Jasmine .
    Base Notes-Vanilla, Amber, Sandalwood.

this cold weather scent is wonderful for not sexy fun. any ideas on one with some jasmine and tobacco?

  40. :

    3 out of 5

@Soutty123: Exactly! This is my go-to-scent when I’m fed up with other fragrances and my nose needs a rest, just as you said. It smells softly as if you put a cooking pot on the stove making fresh ginger water. Clean and fresh and perfect for hot muggy summer days. And fortunately this scent is not ruined by any citrus fruit as usual. It’s one of my absolute favourites though lasting on my skin could be better. Funny: After a long day of work I don’t smell any of it on my skin. But when I go taking a shower and the hot water hits me the complete bathrooms fills with mild ginger scent 😉

  41. :

    5 out of 5

This feels more like a treatment scent than a fragrance as such. The sort of scent that’s nice to wear when your nose needs a rest. Very fresh, a nice scent to put on after a bath or shower in the evening – not for a night out – but just to relax.

  42. :

    3 out of 5

Ginger Essence smells like lemon iced tea with a splash of sweet ginger. While not listed in its notes, there is a distinct cardamom note at the base of this scent, furthering the tea/chai associations for me.
Extremely refreshing, this scent it perfect for the summer and for when I’m feeling a bit nauseated or headachey due to the meds I’m on. I imagine this would be great for pregnant women, or for people who are sensitive to perfumes. This is the kind of scent where it’s impossible to spray on too much, which is wonderful because I like to mist this all over and occasionally into the air around me.
Unfortunately, the lasting power of this perfume is decidedly weak and fades extremely quickly. I’m considering buying the rollerball for touch-ups but the cost is a major deterrent right now.
If you’re wondering what the difference is between this and the Intense version, I was told that the Intense doesn’t have as much of the citrus, and it has a longer staying power. Knowing that, I still went with this one because I was looking for something light. I’m extremely pleased with this, and have been wearing it non-stop since I bought it!

  43. :

Why so expensive? I have/had 2 rollerballs and they have been wonderful! But i dont remember payin like 35 bucks each for them. I dont know. I used this stuff in my purse for headaches, bug bites, hand sanitizer, a quick pick me up… Now im looking for a fresh ginger fragrance and it is like 80 bucks a bottle! Dang it!

  44. :

I recently sampled this at the airport. I really loved the spicy ginger with softer lemon undertones. Fresh, yet spicy and ideal for those who do not like the herby or oceanic summer frags. A serious competitor to my Clarins Dynamisite, which I currently use as a ‘pick me up’ on tired mornings. Also love the natural/organic element from this brand, which I find especially appealing when it comes to frags I’m more likely to wear in the sun. Another one for my shopping list!

  45. :

    5 out of 5

I love this perfume. It’s fresh crisp and spicy all at once! On me it gets quite sweet actually, adding another dimension of complexity. I find it wonderful for layering, or alone on hot days. It’s easy on the nose, and not synthetic or headache inducing at all; quite high quality. I could never do without this stuff! Never stop making this miracle juice Origins, I could never find another lovely natural perfume to substitute for it!

  46. :

    4 out of 5

I love this! It’s simple, straightforward and very uplifting. If you like ginger, you’ll love this! It is *very* ginger, fizzy and piquant, but smooth and sweetened rather than bitter and herbal, with just the right amount of citrus to brighten it up. This is a comfort scent for me, it’s so warm and sunny.

  47. :

    4 out of 5

I love love love this fragrance, it’s really uplifting. Believe me, no-one would hate this kind, nice humble and pleasurable fragrance. It’s not too aroma not too spicy but really sweet spices and not boring at all. I just found out its scent of Origin Ginger = Earl gray tea+Mint leaves of Jo Malone in term of uplifting feeling. I love them both but Origin is much more valuable.
To whom that like this fragrance and really want to have more intense power GOOD NEWS, Origin has just release (Nov/2011)intense formula calls “Ginger Essence Intensified fragrance” the same flacon but changed the cap to silver. I am look arround in my area to own it soon.
FRAGRANTICA… please add into new data base too…Thanks

This is a very clean and uplifting fragrance for me. The only problem is that it leaves so quickly. I find myself re applying after about an hour. Wonderful, refreshing scent to revive one’s senses of peace and joy ~ Strong ‘ginger’ spritz.

it is gorgeous and my favorite summer scent – but unfortunately it doesn´t last on me…if there was an edp i would definitely go for it!!!

  50. :

    4 out of 5

It begins with a fresh blast of ginger and nicely balanced citruses, and maintains those notes throughout. As it dries down a hint of a sweet tea emerges alongside the ginger/citrus notes slightly softening the scent. It is fresh and invigorating yet manages to also be sweet and comforting. Like sipping on a sweet ginger lemon iced tea in the warm sun. A fabulous and very natural smelling ginger perfume. If you are a fan of fresh ginger scents I highly recommend this. I agree that this scent usually does draw compliments from men.
Sillage is good, very long lasting as well.

  51. :

I love, love, love this! It’s probably not for everyone, but it suits me perfectly. I have received tons of compliemts on it and men seem to love it more than anything else I wear.

  52. :

    4 out of 5

I have to be in the mood for this but when I am, it is gorgeous. Sweet ginger and citrus. Its longevity is good, it lasts all day. Some will say its a summer fragrance but I find it quite a comforting scent and most often wear it in Autumn and Winter. It’s also surprisingly a little bit sexy but not in a big, loud, in your face way. For those who like natural scents, maybe Jo Malone fragrances – try it. I’m on my second bottle and I can’t say that about many fragrances.
