Description

One year after the launch of the modern version of Gentleman Givenchy comes out its new Eau de Parfum edition. Gentleman Givenchy from 2017 is a reinterpretation of the original from the ’70s, adapted to the modern man. The face of the perfume is English actor Aaron Taylor-Johnson.

The new Gentleman Eau de Parfum is created by Olivier Cresp and Nathalie Lorson from Firmenich. In the new fragrant pyramid, there are notes of black pepper, lavender, orris, patchouli and black vanilla.

The fragrance is available as a 50 and 100 ml Eau de Parfum.

Gentleman Eau de Parfum was launched in 2018.

This fragrance is of high quality, super strong and long-lasting! I was gifted an official sprayer sample with another purchase, three or four days ago I tested it on my wrist, a tiny drop fell onto my shorts. The scent is still radiating strongly from the shorts today!
The scent is really not my thing at all but I think if you like Dior Homme Parfum or Police Icon Intense (hidden gem imo, though not my thing either) then you could like this too, I find the Givenchy to my nose is more wearable, possibly due to the vanilla note but I would still go easy on the sprayer!

The eau de parmfum and the eau de toilette are VERY DIFFERENT.
The toilette is lighter, fresher and has a BIG pear note, whilst the parfum has longer lasting iris and vanilla notes. Totally different.
And, as some have eluded to, the 1ml sample is different again, seems very much stronger?

I love Prada L’homme and Dior Homme Intense. Valentino Uomo intense was nice but I felt was a bit more zesty for my liking, much preferred the other 2.
This one gives me the same sort of vibe to DHI but I feel that it is a lot more wearable in certain situations. To me it feels like DHI but slightly more masculine. I really love it!

Another take on the iris-leather thing that Dior Homme does so well. Here the leather is substituted by a strong basalm note that to me doesn’t do the thing as well. I’s not a bad perfume but I tend to stay with the “original”.

When I smell this I think of Dior Homme Intense and Bentley for Men Intense just had a baby. Makes sense considering the perfumer who made this also made the Bentley. Good performance. A great release.

Gentleman 2017 was a bellyflop so spectacular that even fragrance chemist Philip Kraft, the most constructive and positive-minded reviewer I’ve ever come across, couldn’t think of any redeeming qualities. The fragrance spent its first year getting critically pummeled, and if industry rumours are to be believed, its commercial performance has been just as pitiful.
Gentleman was supposed to be a showcase of Firmenich’s new material Clearwood, which is a biosynthetic “sanitised” patchouli with its earthy, leathery and rubbery aspects removed. How exactly you’d showcase an ingredient whose purpose is to go unnoticed is beyond me. Olivier Cresp and Natalie Lorson apparently didn’t know either: They took the cocoa-iris-lavender idea of Dior Homme, added a touch of spice, and patched it wholesale over the ambrocenide-leather foundation popularised by 1 Million (see also Spicebomb, Man in Black). All this was helmed by a disjointed pear top note whose only positive feature was its merciful brevity.
But surprisingly, I’m not as ill-disposed to the new EdP as I thought I’d be. Maybe my recent run-in with Sauvage (and the passive-aggressive cringe some of its fanboys left in my inbox after they read my review) has finally taught me to appreciate the inoffensive. Givenchy has jettisoned any pretense of creativity and gone back to playing it safe: They got rid of the pear top, and adjusted the volume of cocoa and iris until every last focus-group member could reconcile the smell with his frail masculine ego.
The result feels a bit “My First Grown-Up Cologne”: Something for guys who’ve outgrown the damascone-laden concoctions that come in gold ingots and handgrenades, but who aren’t quite ready to leave their comfort zone yet. Something for budding college kids who believe the epitome of class is to be as inconspicuous as possible (yeah, I was like that too).
So here, take a very unimpressed “thumbs up” from me, Givenchy.

This is pretty good as a scent, a way better improvement over the 2017 eau de toilette. This one grew on one. It’s a beast as far as sillage. Its quite potent. I get mostly lavender, orris, pepper and cloves. I received a compliment. Better suited for a well dressed casual attire or suit/tie man. A Date Night for sure.

tried this last weekend and its ok. not amazing and if discounted in a year may buy it but overall its just ok.
you want good then get the gentleman absolute- blows this out of the water

Nothing really special, if you ask me. I associate Givenchy with bold, daring and edgy (though a bit tacky) statements. The last time one of their men’s perfumes made that kind of a statement was when Pi was launched, with am honorable mention for Play Intense.
This one though is just above average at best. I don’t get why people would compare this to DHI, with it’s prominent Iris note. The vibe might be similar, but Gentleman EDP doesn’t have its distinct character, nor its performance.
Looking for something similar at a bargain price? Check out Esprit – Simply You, which it has a surprising lot in common with.

This one is really really good! Better then DHI or VUI,much more complex and richer then the other two! I can’t stop sniffing it,very well blended.Don’t understand what is wrong with the noses of those who said it’s just ok or that it will be good as a clothes softener, really people??? Some ‘humans’ here are to affected by snobism ..

At the first sniff, I was a bit dissapointed, nothing really groundbreaking. It develops and I get mainly nice vanilla, some patchouli and something I can’t put my finger on – possibly that tolu balsam – no idea how it’s supposed to smell.
It’s way too powdery to my nose and I believe to tone down the powdery thing, some more ingredients would step up. It’s sort of dusty and suffocating.
To me neutral 5/10. I would rather smell Gentleman Absolute.

Its alright, Its very powerful for one. You will make an entrance in the building with this one. The lavender just throws it off.

  13. :

Like it. Opens like VUI but goes opposite directions as this one is peppery and not as sweet. Well blended I’d say, the spice is noticeable but subtle. Idk what dark vanilla is but it’s good here, iris is subtle as well, don’t get much patchouli for my nose.
Basically Uomo Intense without citrus and add pepper and spices.
Like it dont love it. 7.5/10

This is very disappointment release from Givenchy nothing special/ground breaking they just mixed with two perfume first you spray in 20 minute you can smell the same vibe from Dior Homme intense after dry down its a toned-down version of Bvlgari man black orient. long lasting is 5-6 hours Sillage and projection is moderate
    My rating is 5/10………..!!

@Perfumecritic what does that says then of all the people saying they smell the most wonderful iris in this perfume and compare it to DHI and VU? Lol.
Iris or no iris, this doesn’t smell at all to those perfumes to me. I own them both, I don’t own Gentleman but I tested it enough when it came out and I seem to remember it smelled like woody notes to me (don’t remember which version I tried).

  16. :

    3 out of 5

The enthusiastic opening reminds me of the smell of a newly opened tic-tac candy box.(white)
Once the pepper has escaped, it settles in a powder of orris and lavender that remembers clean, freshly ironed shirts.
It closes in the most obvious confused vanilla with the balsam tolu.
The general atmosphere I have when I’m in a duty-free airport and after having abused my nostrils all the smells seem good but similar and impersonal.
    Longevity and sillage are good.
Oh … but the price is … gentlemen.

  17. :

    5 out of 5

Interesting notes and good first impression but four sprays on my wrist yesterday offered poor projection and average longevity.
The smell would be nice for an Axe shower gel and deo combination.
    Givenchy deserves way better.

  18. :

I love prada l’homme, but the intense version was only a like. This fragrance for me, opens with an iris note similar to that found in the l’homme line, not as strong as in DH line, more a powdery sweetsness with a creamy background. The iris note starts to settle down while a creamy vanilla note and a masculin background grow. The sweetness is similar to that in DHI (i’ve never smelled valentino UI, so I can’t compare them) creamy vanilla, but with a much more subtle iris note.
A cualitative characterization: dark, alluring, powdery refined, creamy vanilla
    Performance: 8h-9h, moderate(perfect) projection
    overall: 9.5/10

I dont understand why it is being compared to DHI, I own DHI and tried gentleman EDP and also tried the Givenchy other releases like Gentlemen Only & absolu etc.
where is the similarity btw DHI & Gentleman edp?? DHI is way better than this ! Gentleman EDP gives me sweet smoky sticky vibe. I dont find any similarity with DHI. the signature of DHI is that “lipstick” smell which i don’t smell in this! Many are confused with Iris and Orris. Please read up. So DHI & Gentleman EDP,they are both different frags with their own strengths. So those who hv DHI & planning to get this go ahead and buy it coz it will not be a redundant buy. However those thinking it will give u the same vibe of DHI or Valentino Uomo will be disappointed. I find its longevity is excellent (lasted on me around 10 hours) and sillage is good for 2-3 hours, however this one gives me headache..

@endymion: Great question! A brand rep insists that the official note, as listed on the Givenchy Beauty website, is orris, not iris. They are different aromas, like violet vs violet leaf. See my review here under the category Fragrance Reviews for more info as to how these notes differ.

  21. :

    3 out of 5

Considering the similarity in notes, I find it different enough to warrant a purchase.
It’s level with DHI in terms of sexiness and brings a little more spice than VUI.
That bottle too! Pure sex. How could you not?
    LOVE.

  22. :

To owners of Dior’s Homme or Homme Intense, and Valentino’s Uomo or Uomo Intense, or even Zara 9.0, this is a redundant purchase.
    Definitely not getting a bottle.

  23. :

    4 out of 5

Very interesting and enjoyable considering the absolute mess they’ve made of the 2017 version of Gentlemen. I got a dense oriental lavender opening with dark resinous notes then it basically mimics Dior Homme intense orris and patchouli but not as full on. Then when it’s dried all the way down doesn’t smell like DHI and goes back to a dark vanilla and tolu balm slightly spicy and deep but with very low lying Sillage and not the best performance. To say this is a Dior Homme clone is being a little unfair because the opening is totally different (albeit becomes very similar very quickly) and then when it dries down doesn’t smell like it either. I love tolu balsam and although this is a distinctly designer interpretation, tolu fragrances don’t tend to last very long even if they are expensive niche fragrances, so I give it a pass. Gentleman Parfum is pretty good.

  24. :

Dry down very very similiar to Dior Addict. Same warm chai/cinnamon/masculine vanilla. Delightful

  25. :

lighter valentino uomo intense, performance below average 🙁
I’d stick with Valentino Uomo or Dior Homme if I were to choose.

  26. :

    5 out of 5

As a fan of Iris/Orris in general I try to get to smell any major release which includes it somewhat prominently.
This one was a bit too sweat and gourmandish for me at first, but it kept growing on me as I kept wearing it. Many sweet fragrances are just too cloying in the long term and even the highly praised DHI is too much after a while.
The closest I have gotten to enjoying this kind of scent has been Carner‘s El Born, followed by MFK Baccarat Rouge 540. This one is the best so far though. The patchouli and pepper (the latter a note I usually don’t enjoy at all) somehow balance the sweetness of the Tolu Balsam and Vanilla. The Vanilla here is also very nicely balanced and not too dominant.
If you enjoy sweet Iris scents, definitely give this one a try, the same if you like sweet resinous ones. I’d call this a gourmand Iris with a spicy resinous twist.
But somehow this combination transcends the other two catergories and becomes something better in my opinion.
What it does, it does very well, my only gripe with this scent is probably that I feel like it could’ve been improved with more complex, deeper notes, perhaps smokier woods or more spicy or medicinal notes.
Sillage was moderate to heavy, definitely did not disappoint, and longevity was very good, still arm length projection after more than 6 hours.

  27. :

    3 out of 5

This fragrance is just gorgeous, despite the fact I find it very masculine I’ve really enjoyed wearing it myself, I love the orris/black vanilla/tolu balsam combo! The others are definitely right in that this is so incomparable to the original Gentleman from the 70’s that it’s difficult to call it a “modern interpretation”, that by no means is to say that I think this is either worse or better than the original; I definitely prefer this newer fragrance.
I can see that a lot of the notes in this fragrance are used heavily in other popular gent’s perfumes at the moment but I think Givenchy have done it better here!

  28. :

An absolute stunner. Love it more every time I smell it. Forget Valentino Uomo Intense and Dior Homme. This is the one you need.

  29. :

    @perfumecritic
why did you remove iris when it’s actually the first main note put on the back of the tester bottle?
    (which means it’s definitely there…)

I tried Gentleman Eau de Parfum by Givenchy on my skin today. Within about half an hour it developed to a scent built on resinous balsamic and iris notes. The scent is warm and welcoming even though stayed pretty close to my skin. I see people voted that this is similar to Dior Homme Intense and Valentino Homme Intense. This Givenchy product follows a similar resinous iris theme, but there is a pungent peppery note here that gives this one a little bit of a playful character. In the final stage the Givenchy scent on my skin is different enough from Dior and Valentino works, so much so that I wouldn’t consider them similar.
This product is being marketed under the name Givenchy Gentleman which is a great classic that I love. I really don’t like this marketing strategy that a brand uses the name of a classic and sells a trendy juice. It feels like cheating on the fans of the original classic. Classic Gentleman was all about leather and patchouli, while this one is a scent that follows ‘delicious iris’ trend.
All this said, I can’t deny that Gentleman EDP smells very delicious and welcoming on skin. In terms of longevity and projection it is moderate. If you are looking for a warm and delicious resinous iris scent, give this one a try.

Tested it today, on paper though since i was testing another fragrance on my skin..On first smell it reminded me of Bentley for Men Intense applied on skin. After almost an hour arrived at home and sprayed Bentley and i can “see” similarities…To my nose Givenchy is a bit sweeter where Bentley is spicier and more woody, but they share the same DNA, don’t know maybe because Nathalie Lorson is behind both creations.
Since i love Bentley Intense, but i find it less versatile, i think this one is easier for me to wear in more occasions so i will definetely give it a proper testing.
I would like to know if anyone else smell similarities between the two fragrances.
That was my honest opinion, thank you.

Fantastic fragrance but I still prefer Valentino Uomo Intense. However this is a better choice however to wear in warmer temperatures and lasts pretty well. It projects for two hours then lasts about 6. It has it’s own smell and is light and somewhat unique. This is a beautiful fragrance and I highly recommend everyone try it.

Its warm, with a bit of sweet, not offensive in the summer if you use 4 sprays, and i’m just speechless.. The performance is amazing, the scent is amazing and the longer you wear it the better it gets. I’m in love with it and so is my fiancée

This is my favourite release so far this year for men. After the underwhelming release of Gentlemen (2017) my expectations weren’t very high to say the least. This fragrance is very similar to Dior Homme Intense and Valentino Uomo Intense with the iris and vanilla combo but the tolu balsam in this is perfect for the composition. Gentlemen EDP is sexy, smooth, dark and spicy. My only qualm is that there is yet another mainstream fragrance release which takes inspiration from prominent notes used by Dior (Iris, Ambroxan, Leather). That being said, I personally feel that Gentlemen EDP executed this composition perfectly with the added touch of the tolu balsam and pepper.

Powdery, dark, lipstick vanilla. I love this. This makes me feel very grown-up and refined. Seems to skew formal, not that you couldn’t wear this daily or casually, but when I smell this I imagine a crisp, white shirt.

and another flanker that has 0% in common with the alleged original.
    it’s good though.
i can’t really distinguish the notes, but overall it’s a resinous cough syrup that’s the son of shiseido basala and gucci guilty absolute. a son that’s more refined and elegant than both of them parents.
very thick, still, very wearable, elegant and classy.
lasted about 4 hours on my skin, i expected more from such a dense juice. will retry it for longevity.

  41. :

It is reminds me DH or VU … but in much more polite way – not that cloying and pushing everybody to leave the room )))

  42. :

This is a pleasant & safe long lasting scent with moderate sillage/projection suitable for year round use except extreme low/high temperatures. Quite versatile scent with very strong tolu balsam, dominant iris and well ballanced vanilla. This could be a unisex scent. Amazing smell and elegant.
It feels guerlain-ish lol. If I couldn’t see the bottle I’d say it’s a new release from Guerlain house which I consider one of the best quality designer houses.
And it’s closer to Valentino Uomo line than to Dior Homme line IMO. Vivid and alive iris note, feels more casual than Dior Homme iris.
    Well done Givenchy!

Not the greatest performance but the smell is amazing
It just has that to smell me is to like me vibe

Gorgeous opening but the pepper takes over the scent very quickly and makes it a tad on the sour side. Dry down is nice but overall I find this one a bit too sickly and powdery, although it’s better than its older brother which literally smells of nothing but pear.

  45. :

    5 out of 5

Much much better than the ” original 2017″ version. I feel a soft Tom Ford Noir here. Very smooth , elegant, manly, very versatile frag. For me is the best in this year. 10/10.

  46. :

    5 out of 5

This is a big improvement over the 2017 EDT counterpart. I like the touch of vanilla, it’s smooth and adds a nice depth to the fragrance. I enjoy wearing this one, day or night. Very versatile and wearable. Elegant.

  47. :

It’s a more refine version of Dior Homme Intense. It’s a softer than DHI which I really like. Elegant and it makes you feel like a real man.

Best Iris based scent imho. Much more wearable then VUI. I cant stand VUI because it is sickly sweet. This one is so smooth and well balanced. Simple yet elegant.

Its pretty cold were i live and
this perfume just left the most
heavenly scent trail i can remember
i’ve smelled for quite some time.
This perfume is not very original tho,
it borrows heavily from Dior homme/intense
and Prada l’homme/intense but it has
something earthy spicy none of the mentioned
have, that i really like, the sad thing is
that longevity is good for about 2 hours
then it fades and by the 5 hour mark it is
barley there anymore, but still a solid release
    i absolutely loved it.

Just a disclaimer, I was one of the handful of people who actually very much enjoyed the 2017 release. I just received this bottle today and it’s actually very good. The opening is a blast of pepper, with the iris and vanilla in the background. I only get the pepper for 10-15 minutes and it fades into the background for more of an iris dominated scent. Projection seems to be average, it won’t fill an entire room but others will notice. Longevity seems to be slightly above average as well. Is this unique? Not really. Do I enjoy it? Very much. This is basically if you take away the sweetness of the 2017, add a blast of pepper in the opening, and ramp up the iris. Leans towards unisex. It’ll be added into my fall/winter rotation, maybe even into the springtime as well. Gorgeous bottle too.
Edit: I’m gonna go against the ratings here and say this had above average projection and longevity for me. And this was in a colder winter day. Overall I’d say it’s a solid release if you like iris and vanilla

No need of a new version! The original gentleman is a true masterpiece while the new version is just another mainstream scent. No need of this mainstream scent worthless try by lvmh marketing office! They can’t pair the original gentleman by that crap!
Hope they won’t discontinue the original?

The 1974 givenchy Gentleman is the classic representation of pure quality and decency.
From the description above: “Gentleman Givenchy from 2017 is a reinterpretation of the original from the ’70s, adapted to the modern man.”
^ this statement is for marketing purposes only. I am not falling into that crap! Don’t mess with the original.

  56. :

Seriously, how can they even say this is a reinterpretation of the ’70s original…. Do they think we are stupid? That being said, I hold out a little hope for this edp version because the edt was *slightly* unique due to the pear note, but the edt turned chemical after a few minutes on skin. Maybe the darker notes in this edp will hide the synthetic mess hiding within
