About 10 years ago I made a cute gift to my ex, then boyfriend and myself with two bottles of this wonderful unisex fragrance, as they had magnets and attracted to each other. We were so young we were still living with our parents, but I could already appreciate exceptional perfumes, specifically Gaultier2 which, apart from smelling heavenly, had a great feminist concept behind.
Needless to say, my ex-boyfriend and his family could not appreciate perfumes, nor the motto of equality. So the following days when spending time at his house I never saw my gift again, and wondering and asking what had happened, I finally figured out, about a month later, that his redneck and bigot father stole his perfume (my gift paid with my money, my twin bottle), and used it for a month until he emptied the bottle (I guess he showered in perfume), while mine was still full. This is just one of the cruelties that I had to go through with this guy and his family.
Luckily, I soon split up with him and the memories associated with this smell are legendary summer and winter nights with friends and new partners. I never repurchased again, but as I used it occasionally still remains about 1/4 in my bottle and I must say that 10 years later it still smells sexy, as if the ingredients were pure essential oil.

“Simplicity is the ultimate sophistication” – Leonardo da Vinci
And the above is true for this fragrance. A lovely mix vanilla and amber, I don’t get much musk though.
Massive compliment factor with this juice! I’ve had females in clubs telling me how good I smell and even my male friends asking what I’m wearing.
Longevity is great and sillage is also very good. A shame this was discontinued. Altamir by Ted Lapidus is also similar if you can’t get your hands on this.

This sickly sweet concoction really isn´t worth the high prices it´s going for these days.

Warm, assuring, not particularly clever or sofisticate. Carefree. Fun.

I have a brand new bottle manufactured in 2012
It has a sticker on the bottom and not the etched painted letters.
The liquid is not as dark as the first bottles were when it first launched…
Anybody know when it was reformulated??

    Actually, just vanilla.

This is the most seductive but also classy sent I have ever known which is hard to balance.
Men seem to have 0 control when I wear it & from my experience when I first encountered it, it has the same effect on women.
It is warm & inviting which is great for night or a cold winter day
Not comparable to anything & sadly it is very hard to get hold of now.
I am still looking for something to replace it when my bottle runs out. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

I bought it a month ago and the truth is that I find this smell very, very strong … even a little bit overwhelming. Vanilla and amber are very intense.
As the hours go by, it is reduced a little and it becomes more sweet to smell but when you put it on is very strong.
The smell reminds me of a perfume that my grandmother wore before, it has that touch of old French perfume from the 50s.
It’s not unpleasant, I like it, but it’s very strong.
I am a great admirer of JPG perfumes and I had to have this perfume.

STOP comparing this with Altamir Ted Lapidus. It`s not even remotely close. None! Altamir is just something else (in my opinion this doesn`t have Gaultier`s class and prestige and it smells very common). Where Altamir is naked, unfinished, common spicy/woody juice, Gaultier is leathery, caramel salty and creamy. It has distinction and class, it`s an aristocrat. It`s a pity that is discontinued.

    Gaultier 2 = 91% Alien Essence Absolue
The former is more musky, boozy and dry.
The latter is more round, gourmand and moist.
Love both, easily unisex. Superb longevity, just like all Gaultier and Mugler.

    Simplicity at its Best…
This beautiful concoction from the house of Gaultier is a simple rockstar – dichotomy, right..?? Simplicity in three notes – Amber, vanilla, and musk – and a rockstar fragrance with stellar performance..!! It has been months, maybe even a year, since I last wore Gaultier 2, but WOW – what a day this has been. While this fragrance may lean on the feminine side, it is a unique and beautiful scent that can be comfortably worn by both sexes and is a total compliment magnet. It is different and a “one of a kind” fragrance – step out of the comfort zone and dare to be different – you won’t be disappointed…
Lucky for me, my bottle precedes any reformulation and is an original. That said, performance is great, lasting 8+ hours on me and even longer on clothing – all at greater than arm’s length projection. The DNA simplicity will work across seasons and to most events, but I do suggest to be “easy on the trigger” when wearing in close quarters. The projection is underrated. Also worth mentioning is the bottle design with glass on one side and magnetic metal on the other side – unique and well done, JPG. It is a pity this fragrance has been discontinued…
Final tally for Gaultier 2 is 4.5 stars out of 5 stars. If you can put your hands on a bottle, and you are comfortable being different and wearing a fragrance that may lean in to the feminine side, I definitely recommend adding to your collection. (you may want to keep an eye on your bottle, though – especially if you have a girlfriend that likes to “find” fragrances in your stable..). My review comes with a solid “Love” for the Fragrantica community. Simple, yet unique, fragrance that smells great with dynamite performance.
Enjoy your day and happy fragrance hunting…

This is one of those scents that I don’t wear often but it’s seriously one of my favourites. I think I have one of the original bottles so I’m not sure how the reformulation is, considering people always go overboard in the hate department. Regardless, this smells really feminine and makes me feel like I’m wearing the sexiest amber vanilla fragrance out there. Probably that musky animalistic thing that’s been mentioned a few times in some of the previous reviews. I get quite a few compliments when wearing this. Can’t go trigger happy wth this one though. Great fragrance.

This one somehow reminds me of givenchy Pi probably cause of the vanilla amber in it. I also can detect a prominent jasmin note and a slight note of oud. This perfume is a hands down unisex scent.

  22. :

    3 out of 5

Wow this some dirty animalic vanilla! It’s just what I have been looking for 🙂 this somewhat reminds me of Al Rehab Sultan Al Oud. Gaultier 2 has great silage and i am lost in a musky warm amber vanilla cloud. What I have come to love about musk scents is how they interact with your chemistry uniquely. This one will smell slightly different on women then it will on men. But it will smell fabulous on either, making it truly unisex. The notes are fairly linear but the effect is one of a kind. Warm, sexy, Intense. Wonderful!
UPDATE: someone mentioned this having a Guerlain vanilla dry down… it does! Probably the closest I have smelled aside from actual Shalimar!

If you love this , you will adore Jil , Jil Sander.
(Pink liquid in seethrough bottle, with black framing)
This has got the drydown of Jil , but Jil has so much more to begin with, that this one unfortunately lacks…
Jil has a burst of pepper that hits you instantly and lavender but that is softer. The heart is quit sweet , soft and cuddly with Lily of the valley and the vanilla starts to kick in. If 2 makes you feel good and sexy . Jil will make you feel Great and Divine !
Sad part- Jil is a hardfinder these days, might find it more easy on German airports. Love the thing !

Men LOVE this on me. They actually ask me to write down the name so they can get it for their girlfriends or boyfriends. I like it, but it does seem a bit vulgar, so I usually only wear it at home. Amber/vanilla/musk, heaviest on the musk. A little plastic-y. Definitely unisex for guys who like sweeter scents, but it leans feminine to my nose.

reformulation is weak and has lost the intense warm depth it used to have, this is so sad… i spray and spray, it just gets loud and then disappears, no more lingering deep guerlain like vanillin , its just in the celeb frag league now . maybe for rihanna rogue lovers, kinda same vein now.poor everyone who knew the real deal .

Just got a sample to test this out, I was very intrigued by it, I usually love amber.
The Opening: Gross. Disgusting. Burnt. It smelled like rat poison and vinegar, too dirty. That smell lasts VERY long(at least on my skin).
The Drydown: DELICIOUS. Smells like Amber Vanilla Candy, warm sweet and ambery, but at this point, it’s a skin scent. Too bad it’s not linear, I wish it would open like this.
Overall: Bad. Sad. The horrible opening is not worth the wait for the drydown. If you want warm, sweet, almond, amber smell, get Pi by Givenchy. I thought this would be better than Pi, I was wrong. Disappointed. Longevity is pretty good tho, if you enjoy the smell. Also quite strong.
Rating: 5/10 (I gave it a passing grade, because of sillage, longevity and the drydown).

Blind-bought this together with Michael Jordan Legend (which I’m going to write a review on later) from a reputable website based on the many reviews I’ve read online and watching youtube. Nope, I’m so disappointed with this scent, like what I felt with Givenchy PI (new formulation). It has this burnt almond smell like GP, and if you like the new GP, this is the twin of it, so I would say don’t blind buy, smell Givenchy PI if you have access to it.
2 hours on my skin on this cold winter season. This will end up as a gift this coming Christmas.

The first whiff was a distasteful blast of candy-scented water. But it was followed by way more agreeable phases. Now Gaultier² is all about powdery lavender and amber. It seems to protect me with all its sweetness, as if a cotton layer were applied on my skin. It’s a bit thick. Unusual and nice.
I was actually very surprised to discover that it shared some components with “L’heure bleue” by Guerlain, which I love. I could only notice it after an hour. Is it the mix of tuberose and orange blossom at the heart, associated with a nap of vanilla ? That’s interesting anyway. Some kind of unexpected kinship. Unfortunately, these notes progressively disappear, and all that remains at the end of the day is vanilla.

JPG2 is quite a lovely scent and I feel as if I can aptly summarize the experience is a couple of words – sexy hairspray! I cannot escape that association (and I’m sorry if I ruin it for anyone) but it is delightful nonetheless. It definitely starts with more of an orange blossom/grape floral note before getting a healthy dose of a very hairspray like musk. This is basically how the rest of the fume goes for its 8+ hour lifespan – a slightly sweet vanilla and floral “hairspray” musk with accents of a warm and waxy amber note (maybe this is a fantastic representation of ambergris??) and something that is reminiscent of nutty rice as well. I love this fume and often use it as a pillow mist before bed and I smell it throughout the next day lingering in my hair – it is quite beautiful but I do feel this is far more fitting on a woman as is contains a certain ‘vavoom’ that most, if not all, men could not properly pull off. To each their own though! I wish you all a beautiful weekend (whenever you get one next) and happy fuming!

I am a big fan of the perfumer Francis Kurkdjian and blind bought this perfume and it did not dissappoint. I love the powdery, soft vanilla, and woody accords in this perfume and as a man I can testify that it’s not at all feminine! My wife has Jean Paul Gaultier Classique Intense for woman which I love the smell of and was praying this would be a male’s version that I could wear and my prayers were answered. I love, love this perfume!!

Vanilla, musk, and strong, sour, leathery amber, with a powerful, ripe orange blossom note.
Distinctly feminine smelling, reminds me of a dozen or so feminine powerhouses, especially Gaultier’s own Classique. I’m not keen on cross-dressing in fragrances, but I occasionally wear this when I want something different and off-beat. Pleasant and likeable, quite trendy, almost hipster-y.

WOW! Received this in a swap. This one was a blind one for me. My god! Its creamy sweetness keep making me sniff my wrist! ! A little goes A LONG WAY but a lot more sweeter then expected! I can defiantly feel the unisex vibe.. but I love that about this one! Glad I have it in my collection! 🙂

Amazing to read everyone’s comments on Gaultier² here, the vintage has been my signature scent for years and I’ve not discovered anything else that comes close. I only just recently started running out of my double magnetised vintage bottles as I’ve been using it sparingly, to discover it’s been replaced by the new reformulated version which I find despicable! I mean it doesn’t even come close to the original and I find it hard to understand how they can even brand it with the same name. When I enquired about it with an assistant in a duty free perfumery they told me Gaultier had changed factories. My heart sank as I only have enough left of my original for a few more occasions. My girlfriend agreed the original is an amazing scent and suggested there may still be some old stock sitting around in shops. I thought it might be possible at a stretch but had no idea of when it was replaced with the new formula and how likely it would be to find it. Then an amazing thing happened to me on my way to work this morning, I was in a Savers outlet in London and saw 2 x 120 ml bottles on the shelf. They were only £29.99 each so I took a punt and bought one and low and behold it’s the original!!! I’m going back to buy the second bottle. I can’t believe what a turn of fortune this is, I feel like I’ve struck gold and wondering how much other old stock there may still be out there! This must surely be worth a fortune now considering how much original stock there must be in circulation.

This one sounds delicious. It sounds like a scent that would be easy on the senses to smell all day long. Amber is so easy on the nose, IMO. It’s comfortable, and I don’t know about anybody else, but to me, musk always did, and still does smell very sexy…especially in the breeze someone wearing it leaves behind as they pass by.
Does it resemble Obsession? Which I still love after all these years!

I have the vintage edition, which comes out of the bottle like a fresh mug of root beer float watered down with club soda and vanilla ice cream. The simplicity of the note pyramid doesn’t indicate the actual sophistication of the blending itself, which is beautifully layered so that the amber never gets overly invasive on the wearer. The first few hours are mostly a darker, soda fountain amber and vanilla before the musk starts to dominate after the 4th to 5th hour and makes up the bulk of the dry-down.
The vintage edition works well as a unisex fragrance, with a darker mix of amber than the most recent formulation. Performance is excellent, with longevity around 12-16 hours on my skin in late fall and winter and projection seemingly subtle but deceptively powerful. Two sprays should suffice. Hard to pull off as a signature fragrance because of the monotony of the three notes, but Gaultier squared works best as a change-of-pace, on occasion fragrance for colder evenings and nights. If you like amber and vanilla, it’s worth seeking out this one.

@Endymion – I managed to get the 2X20ml which were released only at the launching of the scent, so they are vintage for sure (the dark amber juice)! I got mine on EBay for just under 20£ – they we used for some kind of presentation and only one of them sprayed once or twice. Absolutely beautiful!! Recommending to look for those 🙂

I picked this up by chance. Was going to look for something else and chose this instead.
I am happy that I did! This is awesome! I can’t even put it into words. Amber, musk, vanilla. There’s something else that gives it a the scent of a clean public restroom….though this doesn’t bother me.
This is ideal for layering! I just layered it with Kuumba Made’s Amber Paste and I really want to glue my arm to my face right about now.
It has a soft sillage, closer to the skin for me. But it is still detectable. Average longevity.

I have to make another review… I love G2, but it does have a hint of manliness- something that reminds me of a shaving cream in a barber shop. However, the amber/vanilla is soooo good. I love it. (I’m a girl)
However, G2 is THE SCENT to have for layering. Being that musk, vanilla, and amber are often the base notes of scents… adding G2 adds depth and longevity to other perfumes.
I have always been on the fence about Classique (both EDT and EDP) because Classique comes off as “old French lady” powder/soap in addition to being a vanilla scent. Well, add a little G2, and I’m in heaven!! YESSSSS!!
Classique gives G2 a more feminine edge, adding that powder/soap, and G2 makes Classique more vanilla, deeper, more gourmand– which is what I love/want.
I also put G2 with Hanae Mori, and again… lovely!!
Also layered with XOXO Heartbeat– again… amazing!

This is not discontinued, it’s available everywhere in Hungary.
But to my shock it’s not as strong as it used to be. I have a bottle from the original release and it’s a bomb regarding both sillage and projection, a monster!
That original Gaultier2 is a REAL eau de parfum, not like today’s juices which are labeled eau de parfum but are weak like an eau de toilette or even cologne (The One, Hermés Voyage, Nuit d’Issey etc.).
Yesterday I tested it again in a local perfume store, sprayed a serious amount on paper and after 2 hours by the time I got home only a soft faint smell remained. What a disappointment!
What have they done with this once extremely intense perfume???!!! It’s a joke! A sad joke!

Having the freedom to wear both male and female fragrances I find this EDP to be strongly on the masculine side!!!! Traditional amber notes and a promising well composed synthetic musk!!!
    Sure there are more!!!
But nothing is clear for you to smell in this chemical explosion!!!!!
I get safran a bourbon vanilla and a hint of unknown ( to me) asian spices!!
It used to be my signature when I was 15!!!! Now I get this nostalgic feeling from time to time and wanting to visit the past I wear this and go back to my childish thinking!!!!
I would recommend this perfume to young people under 25!!! It has the smell of my youth
My first love ,my first solo trip on the airplane my first shy entrance to the amazing world of fragrances
I will always have a bottle of gaultier 2 in my collection
I m attracted to its powerful yet immature sexuality as my fridge’ s door attracts it’s magnets !!!!!!!
    Love it
    Thanks

    Female review:
Oh my my, oh HELL YES! This is incredible!! It’s simple, yet perfect! This is what I wanted Classique to be!
G2 is just pure awesome vanilla/amber and smells so amazing, comfortable, sexy, casual, and confident.
I live for sweet perfumes, gourmands, spicy vanillas, etc… and I like Classique. However, there is a soapy powder to both the EDT and EDP. While I can smell the bourbon vanilla, rum, tonka, anise, etc… it’s not quite what I want. (yet I do like it)
This is it! I can’t get enough. Is it for sure discontinued? I got a deal on a 4 oz, so I’ll get another for sure if it’s OOP.
I can tell how this would be unisex/masculine, however- it’s still perfect for me! It’s just a lovely warm vanilla/sexy musk.
If I had to compare this to something, it would be Madonna Truth or Dare Naked, Alien Essence Absolute, or XOXO Heartbeat.
    10/10!

This was a beautiful smell, it was like Amen, a projection House. Heavy on Vanilla, and sweet as. Its longevity was great too. The bottle had a unique Magnetic feature which meant it could be attached to a fridge door, any iron based flat surface. Unfortunately my fridge was in the sun, and one thing I have learnt is that sunlight is not kind to fragrances. Sweet to the max, with some earthy tones. I know I was impressed with it, but time and sun is not kind to anything animate or inanimate. When I purchased this like so many people of my genre, I have to say that their was no internet or forums and I would love to know what attracted me to this fragrance, it has morphed with time and light into something sweet. May frags like this, including Creed MI go off far too quick and end up rancid. I only know i must have been impressed as I bought 4 Bottles of the juice!

Beautiful vanilla based scent. This really is a fragrance that deserves a special day. And thats what Gaultier2 resembles. Unique fragrance designed to be used sparingly, but everytime it is worn, it engulfs your olfactory bulb with warmth and fuzzyness.
For those scared about it being too feminine. The musk caters towards the gender of the individual.

  53. :

Beautiful mature fragrance! The first seconds after you spray it it smells bad, but after 1 of 2 minutes it becomes really nice. Simple vanilla, amber and musk but it smells complex. Also a little powdery.
After 30 minutes the heavyness is gone and you can smell a relaxing and calming scent. it’s also very sexy actually. I would like it if my BF used this. But it’s not a very masculin perfume in my opinion.
I think this one can be listed with Chanel no 5. Very strong, unique fragrances.

Not everyone’s cup of tea. When wearing this, I always get mixed comments either praising it or being too irritated by it.
Personally, I love it! and for months now, this has been my signature fragrance before replacing it with Gucci Guilty intense but still wear it once in a while to tease people with its strong “musky” smell.

First impression – a thick, warm, sweet wave coming from your grandmother’s oven right in your face. Fresh, home made, sweet bread with some dried fruits in it. While it’s still hot, it’s covered with some sugar icing on the top. And then it’s left on the kitchen table to rest under a clean, white (non bleached) linen towel. The bread is breathing, the scent gets more appealing, sweeter, delicious and inviting. A bit later the scent becomes slightly “alcoholic” (makes me think about the delicious TM Alien flankers, like Alien Liqueur de Parfum or Alien Essence Absolue). I definitely get that golden amber note mixing with the vanilla, which grows on me (in the opening, there’s a delicious vanilla note, later it transforms into a rather dark, adult, vanilla scent, no more that strong, gourmand feeling here). The base is cozy, warm and warming like a thick, but still light, beige blanket around your shoulders. But.. under (or on) that blanket something naughty can happen, because the musk and that alcohol notes still play around…
The song “Baby, it’s cold outside” is “playing” in my mind when I wear this.

    Opening a bit tough
Mixing of sweet grapes caramel And Amber
    Opening too feminine

Gaultier 2 is a masterpiece. While I don´t like Le Male, Armani Code and other popular fragrances, Gaultier 2 manages to be a really pleasant fragrance based on only 3 notes. I recognized that many big fragrance hits were made only on 3-5 ingredients. More will overwhelm our nose. Gaultier 2 is often catgorized as a Night Club scent or even more a compliment getter, Sex in a bottle. Musky ambery vanilla. Very well done. In my opinion the best creation by Francis Kurkdjian. I love amber and this fragrance is all about the amber. No bubblegum in here, Just vanilla flavoured amber.
I´ve got a 20 ml bottle of vintage juice.

This is very appealing to me. Creamy sweet vanilla mixed with smoky amber and sexy musk. I like the composition a lot, it somehow reminds me of beautiful autumn day, when the leaves are red and yellow and someone is making bonfire.
A beautiful autumn day at the countryside, that’s what it’s all about.

I thought I had reviewed this, so I went to edit my review. I couldn’t find it, so I’m writing another one.
So, it’s a very strong and creamy vanilla with a slightly dirty amber. I don’t get much musk, but I do get whiffs of gasoline and benzoin if I wear this when I’m super nervous or upset. (Chemistry is everything.)
If I wear this on a good and calm day, it’s the most beautiful thing ever ~ dreamy, comforting, sexy, creamy vanilla and amber, perfectly blended. They smell like innocence until you really inhale. If you have a dog’s nose, like many of us do, you get the hints of dirty sex. But you do have to try, unless you’re wearing this on a dirty sex day ~ or, like I said, a day when you’re filled with anxiety.
There’s a bit of Juicy Fruit gum here too, but, oddly, only about half the time!
Something else I noticed: in the depths of the drydown, if I’ve applied this inside my elbows, I get a creamy and true-to-the-flower gardenia petal. A warm one. Now, I thought it was my imagination…or that I had forgotten and sprayed this on top of PCTG or something…but nope. It happens every so often too! But less often than Juicy Fruit.
So it’s always amber and vanilla ~ creamy and beautiful and to be trusted.
Depending on your chemistry, it can definitely be dirty.
Sometimes it’s gasoline and benzoin; other times it’s Juicy Fruity or gardenia.
But these are all in *addition* to, not instead of. The beautiful Amber~Vanilla is ever-present.

vanilla and amber overdose, but vintage one that stayed in an old chest for ages and grew musty and patinated. some inexplicable layer of dirt is always present, and it just gives it the kick.
great longevity though i’m not sure about the projection after the first hour. it’s a bomb during the first hour and gets closer to skin after a while which is not at all bad, it could easily be overpowering.

so, First spay is like a blast of Ameretto, and I can still smell that an hour later on my skin .
Not sure if this a great scent or just odd enough to want to keep smelling your arm :/

Oh Gaultier, you just wait and see, I’ll be wearing you this fall/winter. You smells daring, so that’s how I’m gonna be this fall. BTW, I bought this last year, and it’s still sitting on a shelf. 🙂
Edit: Thanks for the balloons, but I need to downgrade my praise and admiration, expectation for this bottle. The simple notes that’s shown here on fragrantica made me wanted to get my hands on this, my first and unfortunately the last Gaultier unless I can test something more impressive. I’m not saying this smells bad, it probably depends a lot on who wears it, just not my style I guess. Unisex, and this page also saids it is oriental, idk, I’m thinking you’d probably need a lot of work with your outfit or you as a person like your personality to make this work. The performance is good, no question about that. It wasn’t cheap since it’s discontinued, right? It’s not warm scent either, since I own it, I want to use it but all the things I said kinda confuses me. I’ll still try to keep it around it might see another day, another time.

    Just got this…
It brings me so many memories. It’s sweet and gourmandish, vanilla/ amber bomb! I love the longevity and sillage, it’s great.
I definetly think men easily can pull it off, but you have to like sweet stuff. It’s daring and unique – a great masterpiece.
One thing that might be a downside is, it doesn’t go good for warm weather. It’s heavy and can get cloying – but then again, it’s really all about moderating the sprays.
Don’t discontinue this one Gaultier, it’s heaven.

A very loud fragrance, in a bad way. It has some charm but is very far away from being anything more. Intrudes and persists
