Something between Gres Cabochard and Jean Couturier Coriandre. Could be an unisex scent.

A velvety intriguing fragrance which could have been named Shanghai to better EXPRESS Her soul. The accords here up are perfect, woody green aromatic animalic floral etc.
I place this creation between Vu by Ted Lapidus (1975) and Mystere by Rochas (1978) passing through King King (1978) with a touch of Shocking by Schiaparelli for that oriental incense rose stick presence which came out sniff by sniff after the sweeted oakmoss galbanum entrance. It is true it has something masculin like Kanon and maybe Boss Number One as declared by others. In fact an humid earthy Patchouly it is also quite present in the composition and with the leather we have a barley edt for alpha man of the begin of the 80s here. Maybe this blend was innovative in the 70s for a woman with a strong character but this accord has been adopted for man’s cologne the following decade. So smelling it now…
Anyway Expression is a well made and inspiring composition, Chaillan is a genius, one of mine favorites, maybe this is a too serious and dark fragrance, even if warm enought and almost a tobacco fragrance, maybe a drop of a frivolous flower would give more joy to this superbe scent.

This fragrance is so different than I expected from the note list. I first got a bottle of EDT, and here the galbanum comes across very tart and green to me. The aldehydes are also fiercely strong to my nose, and they turn very soapy, something I’ve noticed no one else mentioned.
I next obtained a bottle of the parfum version, and this one did seem slightly sweeter. I think the rose was in better condition, and I got a slight smell of civet and leather, but neither note was very strong. This is a perfume with a very light projection. Soft and non-existent sillage. Rose sometimes has a tendency to turn tart and sour on me, and this is one of those perfumes. So I’m getting very little honey or sweetness. It smells like a beautiful bar of luxury soap to me. I smell clean and fresh, and it’s all rather green smelling to me. I thought I’d be getting a dark, Oriental type perfume, and instead it’s more of a chypre perfume, although the notes don’t list bergamot and labdanum.
The EDT also has a lot of galbanum to me, so in that way it’s a real ’70’s type of perfume, but I thought I’d get something more trendy from that era. To me it’s more of a 20’s-’30’s type of perfume with the aldehydes and muskiness and iris and rose. I really like the parfum. My EDT’s top notes are off, so it’s not its best.

This is a fantastic fragrance and one I wear sparingly because it’s no longer in production. I am lucky enough to have a bottle and I love it so much, it’s like no other perfume. It does resemble soir de lune as Rossiniopera mentions, there are certainly similarities. I love SdL too.
However this is rich, sweet/spicy/peppery but understated and subtle so it’s not a spice bomb or a sugar explosion it’s a sexy, grown up, feminine fragrance that I first bought in 1981 when I was 15 years old (I know, right?).
It formed part of the “French Quarter” set of perfumes lauched in the late ’70’s that also included Guy Laroche’s Clandestine and two others I unforntunately don’t remember.
All in all, this was by far the best of the four and is hands down amongst my top 10 perfumes of all time. Divine.

I recently tested Sisley Soir de lune, and was thinking about adding it to my wish list. It’s a dark beauty, but I felt that there was just a little something missing. Then yesterday, I found a mini edt of Expression. And my first impression is that if there was a vintage version of Soir de lune, this is what it would be like. Gorgeous, rose-mossy-honeyed chypre. I hope I will find a full bottle one day.

Expression. Jacques Fath. Brings me to the state of being stupefied.
Je fais souvent ce rêve étrange et pénétrant
D’une femme inconnue, et que j’aime, et qui m’aime
Et qui n’est, chaque fois, ni tout à fait la même
Ni tout à fait une austere, et m’aime et me comprend.
    Wrote Paul Verlaine
these exact links you would see on the advert of Expression from 1978
According to the information, that I have found, Expression was created by Raymond Chaillan. I dont understand why in our database only Anais Anais marked as his creation. He did plenty of masterpieces, including Boucheron homme, Opium, Ho Hang, YSL pour Homme, Parfum d’Hermès, Carven Monsieur Carven and many, many others
Expression is not very well known, its a mystery fragrance, its the best that I have in whole collection possibly.
Expression opens at once – lots of honey, wood, amber and leather, then..it melts as a wax, burns on your skin like most expensive candle, its so passionate and..tender, heavenly and yet earthy, you trapped in a place which does not belong anywhere else, place that you never been before. Very warm ambergris, wild carnation, which can only grow on top of mountains, as high to the sky and sun as possible, smells like heather as well. Expression also smoky-mossy based, its a little bit tarty, acerb, like the smell of immortelle, animalic, – be it leather with flowers mix or certain way of honey reproduction, it has everything within you can only wish for. I can go on for ages. Expression is a right name for such unreal perfume – you can not put it into words, but your face expression while you wear it – says everything.

I tested parfum Expression in a hot day and I had to put the electric fan on . I realized that my wrist had got very cool as it was next to the fan and that the perfume was at its best . So, better wear it in winter . It is a chypre with big oakmoss and strong rose and so enchantingly smooth and elegant . I enjoy wearing old style perfumes which are so far away from the modern sweet fruity floral trend . They smell unique !

Beautiful powdery classic rose chypre. Andy Tauer’s Une Rose Chypree is somewhat similar, a little sweeter perhaps.
