El Born Carner Barcelona for women and men of Carner Barcelona

Share:

Description

“The winding cobbled streets flow seamlessly into the old stones of the medieval times, witness of Barcelona’s history. Plants and flowers tumble down from tiny decorated balconies sharing protagonism with vintage stores, pastelerías, cafeterías, old bookshops, wine bars…
A group of old friends playing cards, youngsters discussing at the edge of the fountains, tourists enjoying a glass of champagne… this is El Born, a unique atmosphere where even the XIVth century church Santa Maria de Mar seems to want to go unnoticed just being another spectator of the show.” – a note from the brand.

El Born by Carner Barcelona is a Oriental Floral fragrance for women and men. El Born was launched in 2014. Top notes are sicilian lemon, calabrian bergamot, angelica and honey; middle notes are fig, heliotrope, benzoin and egyptian jasmine; base notes are madagascar vanilla, peru balsam, australian sandalwood and musk.

A very nice scent, smells classy and natural. I’m sure Carnee uses very high quality ingredients in their perfumes but for me there are 2 characters that are there in most of their offerings, 1- usually their perfumes have great dry downs and weak top notes, 2- They all share a DNA that is always noticable in the drydown. That specific common element in their products is very toxicating for me, I can’t smell it for long without feeling an urge to rub it away, it causes me some discomfort, which I found in Rima XI, D 600, Tardes and El born (the only ones I’ve tried so far).

I’ve been to El Born, but I can’t recall that place having a particular scent; nevertheless, it’s a lovely mental image. 🙂
If you like Arabie by Serge Lutens, but find it a bit overwhelming, El Born might be an option. They don’t smell similar per se, but they share a vibe. Arabie is much more spicy and sharp (maybe it’s the bay leaf), but the boozy honeyed fruitiness on the opening of El Born feels very familiar. On later stages El Born takes a totally differing path and becomes much more mellow with powdery heliotrope and dusty vanilla; woody and moderately sweet. I don’t see it as a straight-up gourmand, because to me it doesn’t present anything even remotely edible after the opening. Actually, it’s somewhat unique and difficult to describe. Better to try yourself. It’s a good one!
    Long-lasting, moderate sillage

Having lived in Malaga for some time – this fragrance put me right back to the old wine cellars with barrels of sweet wine stacking up. Gorgeous and quite sweet. Reminds me of rum and raisin or sweet red wine.

Sweet honey floral woody gorgeousness. Slightly boozy with a distinct vanilla scent.. how I imagine vanilla liqueur might smell. There are definitely woody undertones, but they’re soft and subtle enough to keep it sweet overall.
I’m not picking up any citrus at all.. but I’m not super great at identifying individual notes, so it’s probably just so well-blended that I can’t find it. The fig, on the other hand, is well represented. I’m a big fan of fig in perfumes, so this is a plus for me.
Upon dry-down, I’m even getting a hint of tobacco… a sweet, fruity tobacco. Truly lovely!
El Born is most definitely going on my want list. I foresee getting a lot of wear out of it. It’s sexy, but understated. It’s classy, but not stuffy. I’d wear it on a date. I’d wear it to the office. An interesting & versatile winner!

El Born is seemingly the most currently-discussed fragrance from the Carner Barcelona line-up, and since it’s framed in many circles as being vanilla-centric, it’s no surprise that it would make the rounds.
I agree that vanilla is main player, if I had to choose one, but for me there’s a lot more going in El Born, which has a resinous, spicy, floral, and perhaps even citrus side. I get hints of the benzoin, balsam, and jasmine, and perhaps the musk, but the citrus is totally lost in me in opening, so on my skin it comes subtly.
Longevity is very good but projection is not impressive for the cold-weather-leaning nature of the fragrance. Still, it’s certainly good enough as far as performance.
Overall it’s lovely and provocative–resinous, spicy, slightly floral/woody. I quite enjoy it, and need to sample it more, but tentatively the only thing about I don’t like is the retail pricing ($180 for 100ml, $120 for 50ml on Twisted Lily and other US sources), though I’m told there are much better deals to be found.
El Born is a very promising, interesting spin on an otherwise somewhat redundant vanilla genre.

I don’t know much about this house but I know everything about El Born.
Now if this is the quality the house of @carnerbarcelona puts in their creations, pls give ’em all to me. El Born to my nose can be categorized as a sweet oriental floral fragrance, wallowing in all kinds of quality yummies. It’s a benzoin, vanilla, honey laden fragrance with some noticeably boozy qualities. Sincerely, I can say perfection, especially the blending, this one will hit the spot on a warm or cooler day, it will make you and the people around you want more. No shouting in this one, but loud enough to be heard. Wonder in a bottle.

Overall it’s a gourmand to my nose.. just as a sweet cake with honey. It also has some feminine qualities like a powdery feeling and edible smell. I think it would be better for a woman but for me it’s a unisex gourmand… I could eat this thing!
It has nice longevity and moderate sillage and it’s perfectly blended. Quality is here. Main players are honey, vanilla, benzoin, musk mild angelica & peru balsam and creamy soft sandalwood with fig… and maybe traces of licorice.

    Ok guys. Tried this one.
This PdM Oajan with some slight differences. While Oajan is all-out in-your-face kind if scent, this one is subtle. I actually like this one more than Oajan. It is subtle, not loud, but you still get whiffts of it every now and then. Will I get it? No. I think it suits women more. Can a man pull it off? Absolutely. Just not me. Blind buy? Yes if you are into vanilla based gourmands. Otherwise, sample it.
UPDATE: took the opinion of 4 girls. They all liked it but 3 saud it was feminine and 1 saud it smelled like her aunt. WTF.

Scent – honeyed fig & vanilla musk.
Season/Time of Day – I prefer to use this one in the colder months, during the day.
    Projection – I didn’t get noticed, I didn’t get a compliment.
    Longevity – I get 8hrs consistently.

This is the best Boozy vanilla in the game! And it’s unique. Not your average cupcake icing vanilla or vanilla extract like SDV. 10/10

Blind bought after hearing about this on YouTube. Great decision as this thing is one of the more unique vanilla based scents. Haven’t smelled anything like it as it’s take is very original.
Classy, elegant, professional, upscale, don’t know what else I can say. Spice and vanilla come through extremely well blended and and I can see wearing it through all seasons as it’s not super sweet.
Truly impressed by this company and will definitely be checking out there other offerings
Just an amazingly wonderful scent, you must get your nose on this!!!

  12. :

The top opens creamy and resinous, sweet and indolent. It has that indulgent, deep, syrup-y sweetness of molasses, or cooking sugar. I definitely get that dark boozy raisin quality that has been described in other reviews! The citruses and fig lend a welcome brightness that cuts through all that rich viscosity.
For me, this is completely gourmand, almost treacle-like in ‘thickness’. Unfortunately, my skin turns El Born and makes it a sour monster within an hour. The common denominator seems to be the honey. However, what an incredible first hour!

  13. :

    3 out of 5

El Born has a blend of vanilla and dry, warm honey. Dry and warm to the point of having a powdery appeal. An excellent sandalwood base makes the honey and vanilla’s properties pop effortlessly. Here we flirt a lot with the idea of going gourmand, like french crepes/pastries with boozy warm raisin sauce over them, while not totally getting there as it is balanced by the key element in this one to me: Peru Balsam. Finally I’ve found a fragrance I love and where this note shines. While it also helps the slightly darker, boozy part, it is first and foremost sticky and resinous also a bit sour, like pine sap (Helped by Angelica as well here), which brings some great complexity, uniqueness preventing this scent from being too sweet and joining the endless row of straight gourmand choices we can find on the market.
And just like a painting in Picasso Museum in the neighborhood of El Born in Barcelona, one that is easy to enjoy right away yet very different and where you find out more about it and its nuances each time you stare at it, I enjoyed Carner Barcelona’s creation right from the first time and I’m loving it even more with each new wearing. In the top 3 of my best discoveries of the past few years.

I just started wearing El Born…and while these are my initial impressions, I can’t help asking the question: ‘why did I not wear this sooner?’ This is nice stuff. This is a resinous scent with vanilla and honey and mild spices mixed into it. This is a mildly gourmandish scent and has one of my favourite notes at the base: sandalwood.
This is a very nice scent. Most of the fragrances in my collection are in the ‘like’ category. This is not a ‘like’ for me thus far…this is a ‘love’. Very appealing and sexy!
Edit: I’m at a clothing store trying on a suit, and the attractive female sales associate helps put on a suit jacket and gets close to me. ‘You smell amazing. What is the name of your cologne. I need to write it down’.
Carner Barcelona El Born. Yes, this stuff is great.

CB knocks it out of the park again with this one. I’m shocked to learn there’s no tobacco in this one cause out of the gate, that’s what I smell…. that and vanilla. Truthfully, there’s something very mysterious about this one & I love every bit of it… THIS IS A MASTERPIECE! Longevity is incredible but the projection is a bit weak… MAN I WISHED THIS PROJECTED MORE cause I can’t get enough of it. Very VERY NICE…. GET YOUR NOSE ON THIS ONE!

I smell a creamy bergamot with honey, woody notes, benzoin, and musk. Actually this smells like the top of a newborn baby’s head. Got to give this one a longer wear, but that’s my first impression.

    I agree with Arabian Knight.
This smells “rum raisin ice-cream” or Rum Cake.
Either way, this is deliciousness incumbent, a must have in any gourmand collectors possession.
I received two unsolicited compliments today on way to work, one at work… and a few heads turn on the train also.
Again this is a simply ravishing fragrance, that anyone one with a sweet tooth will need to have.
There’s no rum note in this frag, but you will get a hint of it.
The Benzoin, Vanilla, Honey & Peru Balsam shine throughout this fragrance. Truly truly unique!
Can’t speak badly about this jewel.
Update: It’s not rum…it’s licorice I’m picking up…Little hints of it, when the wind blows.
I used six sprays…both wrist, back & front of my neck, chest, and front of my shirt.
Will I buy this again?…Yes(This time a full bottle).
Does this fragrance enter BEAST MODE, good, just okay or weak sauce at best? Sexy Beast Mode.
What’s the strength of this? EDP.
Am I willing to trade this fragrance? No.

Nice honey vanilla fragrance with other scents mixed in. Very good one. The sillage isn’t enormous so you won’t offfend. The whole scent to me seems very soothing and pleasant. Well done!

I love every other fragrance from Carner Barcelona that I’ve ever tried but this smells exactly like Carmex on my skin. I get an opening blast of tobacco leaves and vanilla (which is wonderful!) and then seconds later it turns to Carmex.

Oh my god this is gorgeous. I would consider this a perfect fall scent. It’s incredibly comforting and the scent soothes my soul. There’s nothing offensive about this fragrance at all. Every second of this is just beautiful. Soft, but yet rich and warm. This fragrance is a perfect balsamic blend. It almost smells like licorice and liquor in the opening. Personally I think this is a pretty linear scent, but it doesn’t bother me at all. Actually I quite like that it maintains it’s quality throughout the entire duration. I would say this fragrance has moderate sillage and great longevity. I could easily smell this after 8 hours. This fragrance is about to knock one of my favorites off the shelf!

This already had a like on it and I do recall getting a sample a good while back and I suspect I’ve written a review already and just not posted it. (I do that a bit)
Well I was surprised I wasn’t keener to let people know my thoughts because Carner Barcelona’s El Born is a fantastic and original fragrance. I say original but I can draw some comparisons even with things I’ve tried and reviewed recently like Aomassai. However El Born has it’s own unique things going on. The opening is very reminiscent of my childhood and I can’t quite place what it is? something sweet no doubt. This is a gourmand vanilla steeped in lovely honey, heliotrope angelica with a blast of elemi in the opening and a drydown of peru balm it’s pretty special stuff. I love the almost boozy liquorice quality in el born opening and settling few minutes and later on that almond smell from the heliotrope.
Yeah it’s magic. I’m wishing everything was stronger at the moment so I haven’t been commenting in much detail on performance, this isn’t massive and due to it’s make up a naturally low sitting skin scent.

    Damn and Whoa.
El Born is amazing – like knock you off your feet amazing.
It’s a perfect mix of honey, vanilla, and balsam. From my first spray, I thought this was simply perfect. When the sandalwood note makes it an appearance, it becomes even better.
I’m not a huge fan of fragrances that are so strongly vanilla, but this one is beautiful. The Carner line is rapidly becoming a favorite and this is one of their best.

i’ve test it today and let me tell you, this smell like french “crepes” with rhum and vanilla ( angelica and figues effect)in good way. there are no rhum in this but i smell it and last loooooong time . very nice creation , perfect for fall/winter dating and calming situation… Carner is a good choice , all creations are “piece of art”

  28. :

A very well balanced dark vanilla where Benzoin, Peru, Heliotropin and vanilla combines into a unique vanillic scent. I also note a smoky touch especially during the first fifteen minutes, but some smoke vibes linger in the background for hours. I think this smokiness might be a key player in making El Born so different from otherwise similar fragrances.
In the drydown the smoke undresses to become more woodiness and there is a sweetness more likely to come from honey and angelica than resins and vanilla components. And here, in the drydown, I can imagine the old streets filled with pastelerías, cafeterías and old bookshops which are announced as the intention by the designers.
El Born is simply a winner if you are into vanilla or gourmand fragrances.

  29. :

Since my fragrance journey began, I’ve been on the hunt for the perfect vanilla fragrance, since it is definitely amongst my favorite notes when done well. I just received my decant of this two days ago and I can already say that this is easily in my top vanillas of all time. I’m also a gourmand lover so that of course doesn’t hurt this frag’s rating in my book but either way this is just a beautiful and unique scent. It is a bit powdery but not enough to bother me or make it too femine. Due to olfactory fatigue I rarely rate scents with performance in mind, so with that said I have to give this a 9 or even 9.5 out of 10.
May also want to add that the only other scent I have tried from this house is Palo Santo and I was NOT a fan. Unique sure… but the gaiac wood mixed with that strange milk note made it completely unbearable to me.

  30. :

    4 out of 5

A big gourmand perfume designed to take you to the Barcelona’s quarter of El Born filled with small cafeterias and where air is rich with aromas of coffee and freshly baked patisserie. This is where Peru balsam comes handy with its rich vanillic nuance and depth to enhance the gourmand combo of benzoin, heliotrope (the powdery fraction of vanilla) and vanilla.

  31. :

El born is a lovely and gourmand perfume. It is an evocative scent, it make me think about a winter evening by the fireplace, a cognac or rum on the table and some dessert like creme brule. In the opening it reminds me the scent of cognac, warm and embracing. Benzoin and vanilla are predominant but I can detect also a bit of honey and angelica. I think it is very well composed with the right mix of sweetness, creaminess and liqueur smell. El born is a unixes fragrance even if I think it could be more appreciated by women. Unfortunately on me longevity and sillage are week, I applied it at 20 pm and after a couple of hour it was disappeared and I am very disapointed because I really like it

  32. :

What a lovely fragrance this is. it reminds me of Autumn. When i smell it i get the image of sitting in a patio of a dessert shop having vanilla ice cream with raisins on an early autumn humid day surrounded by some plants. then it starts raining after a long dry period which leads to that unique smell of the water mixing in with the dust on the plants and the ground.
this is not a vanilla dominated scent by any means.
    The performance is moderate
    Overall Rating : 8.8 / 10

  33. :

    3 out of 5

I have a hard time identifying any specific notes in El Born, but it is a perfect compilation of sweet, balmy, herbal goodness. The fragrance leans neither feminine or masculine, and the longevity is well over 12 hours on my skin.
I’ve been extremely pleased with the offerings from Carner Barcelona, and El Born is definitely one of my best buys this year.

  34. :

    4 out of 5

Based on the notes and some of the reviews I thought I’d be head over heels with this fragrance, but alas. It baffles me that there’s no salmiac in this, because that’s the most prominent note that I get after the opening. It then develops in a very strong vanilla/medicinal scent with great staying power but low sillage.

  35. :

    4 out of 5

El Born is a delicious gourmand fragrance. At first spray I smell the delicious balsamic benzoin mixed with the vanilla. I also detect the honey, citruses, Australian sandalwood and heliotrope. Dries down to a very delicious balsamic fragrance. It is very well composed and a winner for a gourmand lover.

  36. :

Meat Perfume gourmand but without ever being cloying.
From the beginning and after a brief stint citrus, I feel similar to sweet licorice but with very balsamic produced by the mixture of honey, sandalwood, Balsam of Peru smell and of course vanilla, with a light dusting background because musks but nothing to do with what soapy but rather inclined to the world of cakes and pies.
It feels quite linear and with a good balance and quality between essences, as I said before noting that note of licorice as edible, sweet and whets the appetite like when you go through the door of a bakery.
    Rating: 5.5

I could call it ” 50 shades of Majestic Vanilla” :
Delicious, sweet, clumsy and overwhelming opening of dried fruits mixed with vanilla’s extract poured with honey and splashed with lime. Sounds like a Christmas cake, smells a bit like this, so if you have no patience, probably you’d be already giving up on this.
But under all it’s innocent sweetness, there’s luscious perfume with quite cruel intentions just for grownups. Alluring, refined, luxurious and a bit provocative sandalwood’s, musk and clumsy vanilla’s bean tango. Imagine slowly and tempting cutting vanilla’s stick and looking how the black nectar flows out for hours and hours, because that’s how long it last on your skin.
And the true heart of perfume after night of wearing it – fleshly, charmed and mystical scent – woody, deep, sensually pleasing naughty delicate you. I’ve never tried Peru balsam itself, but I think, this note together with benzoin is responsible for embody the scent. And turn it from gourmand’s splash to mouthful sweet sinful niche fragrant – perfect witchy manipulation of just one note.

  38. :

    3 out of 5

I would say that this is not a full fledged but more of a light gourmand. It would be a perfect signature scent if you live in a climate that does not get too hot or too cold. Maybe a city in California? The dry down is a creamy, sweet but not over the top . I think the sandalwood and fig keep the vanilla and benzoin becoming childishly sweet. More of a boozy/sweet to be honest. Longevity is better than expected while sillage is average. This is very likeable and can be loveable to the right man or woman. No drawbacks at all.

My oh my , was this ever similar to my fav dress up in a fancy outfit perfume-Aomassai PG …I am soo surprized. This might soften and turn a little sweeter and lighter. Like an Aomassai light. This is not a bad thing , cause I looove that perfume !
I will add that having both could do if you love this type of perfume…and then
I would use El born for daytime use and Aomassai for eveningwear.
El born has except beeing so similar to this PG a slight touch of beachy skinscent and an Lutens scent that I right now this moment , can’t come up with a name with…
    Both excellent !

Really nice stuff here. The vanilla note in the beginning is really nice. Almost like a boozy kind of vibe from it too. just a beautiful scent. Falls perfectly in the middle between masculine and feminine. I can’t say for sure if it’s better than D600 right now but I can say it’s a quality offering and deserves to get noticed.

vanilla, vanilla, vanilla, vanilla… and then the rest, beautiful vanilla fragance. I sprayed it last night, so far it’s 2:15 pm (next day) and it is still there light, soft and delicious vanilla.

This looked really promising by the notes and reviews,… but unfortunately it’s not for me.
I am pretty sure this would be lovely if it wasn’t for the strong and overpowering Angelica note with it’s herbal aspects. It overshadows all the other wonderful gourmand notes.
I’m not a big herbal fan, that’s why it doesn’t work for me.
If you feel the same way, you might give a try to ‘Tardes Carner – Barcelona’ and ‘A Lab On Fire – What We Do In Paris Is Secret’.
Both are beautiful, but without the disturbing herbal aspect…

I have fallen in love again – I am turning into some kind of perfume floozy!
El Born is delicious. To me there is a strangeness in that I get both a gourmand scent and a woody scent, from one perfume. I almost feel as though I have layered a light gourmand on top of a woody citrus.
In the opening, for me woody notes dominate and I almost get a woodsmoke vibe initially and for the first hour or so. Its a really nice note though don’t get me wrong. As this woodsmoke and woods with a hint of lemon note settles this is where it feels kind of like layered perfume – there is sandalwood, light clean jasmine, and lemon, and there is also something I find harder to identify, an almost chewy caramel gourmand note, which I guess must be the fig, honey, vanilla and benzoin? I am not sure.
Unusually I am actually having a hard time picking out any distinct notes. When I concentrate I can clearly see the lemon, sandalwood and the “chewy caramel”, but overall this is blended so well that I just get an overall feel. Kind of a black and white photograph of a city street in summer, looking across an intersection, there is a white square building on the corner, and in the photograph this building alone has been coloured pastel yellow. And I really love this. I have worn my little decant as a sample and then worn it all day today and I have been getting wonderful wafts of scent all day, I still smell fresh even in this heat after 12 hours since applying (with a 1 spray touch up at lunch). This projects well, maybe thats just the heat today, but I have had 2 compliments from people sat 4-6 feet away, and longevity is great.
In all, I can see a FB of this in my life!

I agree with Arabian Knight, I get a boozy vanilla with dried fruit from El Born. Beyond that, i can’t pick out the individual notes listed as above. Perhaps they mesh well to form this linear scent, which would appeal to gourmand vanilla lovers. For me, it’s a little too sweet and not boozy enough for its price tag. Instead, I would pick L’Erbolario Dolcelisir (more spicy, less concentrated than El Born) at a cheaper price, or Guerlain’s Spiritueuse Double Vanille(decadent, smoky, more boozy vanilla) if I were out to splash the cash. However the Holy Grail of the boozy vanillas with a unique character all its own, would be Mona di Orio’s Les Nombres d”or Vanille. The sillage for El Born is good and longevity on clothes moderate for me, ranging about 6-8 hours.

“El Born” smells like a soft, luscious dessert. Imagine rum and raisin ice-cream seeping into a recently sanded oak table. The redolent sweetness is warm, creamy and lightly spiced.
The note surprise me, because I wasn’t getting honey specifically, or angelica but in retrospect I can see how they probably work to contribute the rum and raisin illusion for me.
Definitely one to try if you like gourmand vanilla scents.
