Pretty disappointed in this one. After hearing so much on here and on YouTube about how close it is to Poison Esprit de Parfum, I was excited to own something cheaper that I could spray with abandon while still getting the same effect. Sadly, that was extremely far from reality.
Let me start by saying I am a (male) Poison fanatic. I own all of the vintage concentrations (EDC, EDT, EsdP, Parfum), most of the reformulations of the EDT, and the Extrait de Parfum. The vintage Poison Esprit de Parfum is my absolute favorite fragrance of all time. I am lucky enough to be the owner of FOUR 3.4oz spray bottles of the EsdP, which were only available as testers for department stores back in the 80’s/90’s. I *know* my Esprit de Parfum.
Cobra Parfum is not Poison Esprit de Parfum. It is not Poison Eau de Toilette. It is not Poison EdC. It is a fruity, summery, white floral FEMININE fragrance with a slight suggestion that Poison may have been an inspiration. The only way for me to actually pick up those faint hints of Poison, is when I smell Cobra by itself. If I spray Cobra on one hand and Poison on the other hand, the similarities are unidentifiable, with Cobra smelling like a sweet chemical joke. It is much more tolerable when not directly compared to Poison. The fragrance is so much more feminine than Poison due to the louder white florals, that I can’t really pull it off as a male.
I also take issue with the name of the fragrance, as Cobra Parfum is not a parfum at all. It was originally released back in the 80’s as Cobra EdT, with 80% alcohol content. A few years back (2008?) it was re-released as Cobra Parfum with the same exact same alcohol content. It’s an EdT, folks. Deceptive marketing. I tracked down a bottle of the old EdT and it smells the same.
I have to assume that the majority of people voting on here that this smells like Poison have not actually compared the two side by side, and are just going off faint memories of what they believe Poison to be. Go ahead and compare them directly….tell me I’m wrong.

    @vintagelover
    I don’t wish to offend, but…
Sorry to correct you, but my research confirms that Dior’s Poison predates Cobra.
Poison was released in 1985 and Cobra was released in 1987/88, so Cobra IS a clone of Poison. Jeanne Arthes therefore removed the oomph from Poison and produced a version which you find tolerable.
Best wishes from a Poison lover.

I can definitely understand the comparisons to Poison. I am usually repulsed by anything that people claim smells like or be a dupe of Poison because usually they are ghastly (Chacal is an especially obnoxious number).
This was released before Poison and its remarkably very pleasant. It is like the makers of Poison took Cobra and gave it some added oomph.
Although not usually one to be lured in by flashy bottles and packaging, I purposely went for the bottle with the snake on as I am a keen amateur herpetologist. I figured if the juice was hideous I had a cool snake bottle. Sadly the snake is broken but as the juice is good, it’s still been a very worthwhile purchase.
***Edit in response to corkscrewcurly above: No offence taken at all. I was going on earlier reviewers were suggesting. It didn’t quite stack up that this came before Poison but I’m pretty new to it all so I’m very novice!

I have a Cobra perfume, I got this special perfume from a friend back in 1994-95. I like the bottle, but never become friends with it’s containts.

I absolutely love it. It’s the favorite from my collection. I won’t say that it smells too mature. Not at all! On me it’s like late 50s rock’n roll. It makes me think of ponytails and polka dots and it’s quite rebellious at the same time.

At least I was not out of a lot of money with this. I find it merely so so at best. The initial spray is awful, it smell like super sweet rotten fruit on me. It is almost a gloomy sweetness, nothing comes through that could pick it up into lighter and happier spheres. It comes around pleasantly enough after the first 15 minutes, but the syrupy sweetness stays. I associate fragrances very much with moods, and this is just not a good mood potion for me. It smells too mature, and that coming from a 52 year old woman means a lot. I gave it to a colleague of mine who absolutely loved it. Good that we all have different tastes and likes.

    COBRA
    JEANNE ARTHES
    YEAR
    1988
This perfume is such a nostalgic piece of heaven!
At the time of it’s release, the bottle was very innovative unique & attention grabbing. I didn’t have a bottle like that in my collection back in 1988 or 1989. It came with a plastic snake – doubling as a bracelet charm – which was seen as a bit cheap but the scent is not cheap. It has suffered a comparison to Dior’s Poison and regarded as being a cheaper alternative to Poison. I don’t get that at all. This is definitely more unisex and spicier than Poison which I can still dub as being more feminine and powdery-smoky. This has some of the traits as Poison but has more going on in terms of it’s drier base notes. Cobra is an Oriental and the very first perfume of the Jeanne Arthes fragrance line. I don’t know who the hell Jeanne Arthes is but she has made quite a lot of money for herself through the years, as her fragrance line has dozens of frags that continue to sell.
Cobra opens with classic soapy fresh aldehydes, a distinct tangerine which comes off as very fruity and citrusy and it is joined by orange blossom and ylang. From the start it’s a citrusy floral scent. The scent develops into a whit floral perfume of some light powdery texture; orris and iris are behind all that. It’s not too floral but she is redolent with two floral notes I happen to like in perfumery. A jasmine and orange blossom pairing the likes of which I had never experienced before. This is a very well made orange blossom & jasmine. A tuberose is also present but it’s not a buttery delicious tuberose. Instead of turning into edible flowers or a sweet scent, Cobra’s got her poison in her and turns progressively animalic & musky.
I can detect the musk but it’s not a lady musk. It’s totally unisex. There’s also spices, sandalwood, vetiver & vanilla. These notes especially vetiver is glorious. The dry down is a deep vanilla cream with a good musk and sandalwood. This is definitely an Oriental fragrance but she does not come off as too strong or too dark or too formal/solemn. She is playful, festive. There are times it smells like a party perfume because of the fruit notes of citrus & peach along with red berries. The fruity opening is very nice and pleasant as day wear and then it turns into a nocturnal musk and sandalwood. So this fragrance is ALIVE, like a cobra actually inhabiting the liquid and doing all kind of things to it’s performance. A beautiful and very underrated masterpiece.
I used to wear this around 1989 and 1990. At the time I was experimenting with Orientals: Chanel Coco Poison by Dior and Passion by Elizabeth Taylor. This is a fragrance that joins their ranks but it’s less majestic and more flirty, fun, sweet and yet still composed of classic Oriental notes. This is a really fabulous fragrance. I still wear her when I go to New Years Eve parties. The perfume can still be bought online in it’s orignal form. Ebay sells them and other sites that sell discontinued frags. I wish they could bring it back. Jeanne Arthes owes her fortune to this perfume!!

    OMG this is fantastic
    got this one today
    amazing bottle and unbelievable artwork
first the smell, well, I never smelled Poison so I have no idea about their similarities, but this one, Cobra, is very soapy in my point of view, but soapy in a good way, not Cabotine nautious soapy. this is like classic royal soapy feeling, I think maybe it is the work of the tuberose and the aldehydes
very long lasting and after 1 hours all the flowers seems to be blooming on your body
other notes like vanilla, sandawood and peach are undetective, but still couldn’t cover the beauty of this scent
and finally, this scent is dry and warm indeed, and in my point very provoctive and loud. It’s like a perfume for Dita Von Teese. loud and sexy
and the bottle, yep, despite the snake the bottle itself i have to say is a little tacky, plastic feeling though the bottle is pumpkin shaped like Poison

I think we all bought our Cobra from the same eBay Russian lol Well, I have to say that I TOTALLY dislike the opening. I don’t do herbals very well and all I can smell is the tagetes. Fragrantica describes it in with marigolds which I detest the smell of. After about 15 minutes, it starts to go away (but still there). However! The florals are now emerging. I think I will try the suggestion with layering it with Paris’ Tease for MORE floral….and I absolutely LOVE tuberose. Thank GOD this is changing! Smelling good now!

Got this baby all the way from Russia..thanks to ebay.
Its lovely, orange, spicy, powdery on it’s own. But…layer with Tease by Paris Hilton and you have a lovely heavy spicy tuberose…good stuff alone or beefed up!

Personality I cannot make a comparison to CD Poison as I have never smelled it on myself, only others, so don’t know how it would react with my chemistry. Why I bought this remains a mystery to myself,I just wanted something the absolute opposite to gourmands and uber fruity florals and Cobra doesn’t get much different!!
Three words….’Agent Provocateur Maitresse’! Maybe it’s the extremely strong aldehydes in Cobra’s opening, which hits you in the face like in Maitresse but they mellows a LOT quicker in the latter! The mixture of jasmine and ylang-ylang is rich and almost incense like in both fragrances and I’m still deciding if that’s overkill in a perfume as complex as Cobra.
The woody dry down is accompanied by a talcy, slightly bitter orange that I can’t stop sniffing!!
After the initial first spray I struggled to not wash it off as it reminded me to much of an old woman’s scent but I persevered for the first 20 minutes until it developed into something a lot more warm and smokey….thank God!
Cobra is unlike anything I’ve EVER smelled, yes, it in places strongly hints at AP Maitresse but stands out alone as something of powerhouse amongst the mass produced, over worn fragrances of recent years.
It requires patience to appreciate but Cobra is dark, complex and addictive 🙂 Sadly,I hear it is discontinued, so if you have this cherish it and if you don’t but the heavy, heady composition is something you seek it’s worth scouring for!

My nose isn’t sophisticated enough to appreciate this in regard to its similarities to Poison, as they smell so different. Poison is deeper and fruitier, Cobra is dry and mature. I have a full bottle if anyone is interested in a swap! <3

One seller still has Cobra available on eBay. Admit, waited until got mine today before saying! This could win you over to white floral if you are not a fan. It could make you happy if you like the sweety perfume. Have the cobra attar but think that smells more like Passion by Elizabeth Taylor than this Cobra. Find those two delightfully syrupy. This isn’t light but it isn’t heavy, either. Jeanne Arthes Cobra is a fine balance. As for Poison? I prefer this. Heck, I prefer Rumba to Poison. Here we have a scent that may or may not have started as a copy cat but is legend now. Some of you guys might want to skip on over to eBay now.

THE SPICY BITE OF AN ORIENTAL COBRA
I have rediscovered my love of fragrances because I’ve been selling some of them on ebay. I can’t sell this one. Brings back too many fond memories. I had fun with this perfume when I was in high school. Perfume is personal to me. Cobra was the debut fragrance of Jeanne Arthes in 1988. This perfume, although not a Poison by Dior, was very much ahead of it’s time. It was a unisex fragrance for women and men but selling as a woman’s Oriental fragrance. It had the signature creatively designed bottle found in other Jeanne Arthes perfumes. This one is has been compared to Dior’s Poison but I don’t see the connection except the design of the bottle which looks almost the same as the first issue of Dior Poison except for the black color and the additional toy magnetic cobra that sticks to the stopper. The scent starts with strong aldehydes and citric notes of orange and tangerine. It’s already starting off like a man’s cologne. The heart is spicy and warm. However the fruitiness never really goes away as there are red berries and peaches. The tuberose is strong here so if you’re familiar with tuberose and like it, this will be a pleasure to smell. Ylang-Ylang is very noticeable and is partnered with orange blossom that almost smells like a mimosa. Jasmine would usually be strong but I find that the tube rose and Ylang-Ylang are the winners. The result is something that is all at once spicy, floral and fruity, sweet. The dry down, however, is not sweet. Then you get to the cobra’s bite. It’s a strong masculine cobra that has coiled around your body, it’s tongue in your nose, it’s scent all over your body. Classic men’s cologne composition of woody note is there at the end: musk, vetiver and cedar wood. It’s woodsy. Wonderfully woodsy. Sandalwood also makes an appearance which officially makes this fragrance an ORIENTAL. An Oriental to me means that the notes have to contain elements of the Orient: jasmine and sandalwood. The vanilla in this perfume was an innovation at the time when vanilla was just getting started as an ingredient in the formulas for fragrances. It keeps this fragrance sweet but I find that it’s not a big player. It turns musky and woodsy at the end, like a man’s night cologne. The woman that wears this can easily wear Poison, Teatro Alla Scala, and even Opium. This is a strong cologne so I wear this at night on dates for other men to smell on me. It’s beautiful. Very classy, luxurious and not cheap at all despite the look of the bottle and the price. I wish other people could experience the beauty of this fragrance. It’s not a Shalimar, doesn’t try to be a Shalimar but it’s in the same family. I can’t let go of this beauty but I recommend it to all my friends on Fragrantica. Enjoy.

I am new to this forum and do not have the knowledge to describe scents in terms of notes. But hoping to learn! So please forgive my basic perfume lingo. This was a blind buy for me and it did not turn out well. This perfume makes me feel ill. I’ve read other reviews here saying it is like Poison. I love Poison having started wearing it when I was in College. But unfortunately Cobra smells nothing like Poison on me..must be my chemistry, but on me Cobra is oppressively sweet and heady.. Not in a good way. II now have a 100 ml bottle of the EDP, once used, to swop with anyone who is interested!

Review for the vintage edp (purple accents on black bacground with gray patterning):
Cobra, as a predecessor to Poison, hits many of the same notes, but in some cases, hits them more cleanly. Don’t get me wrong- I love the original Poison in it’s plummy dark spicy vanilla spunkiness.
But Cobra is a different beast- citric, drier, spicier, darker, more serious, more mysterious. Where Poison is all about fun, flamboyantly breaking expectations, and indulgence, Cobra is subtle, evocative in a quieter vein, a scent that hints at hidden vistas, that sparks curiousity, requires investigation. Cobra smells of potentials, possibilities, and unexplored opportunities. Soft, velvety, and warm, it is difficult to ignore the scent characteristics that Cobra Shares with Poison, but the truth is that these two scents have a very different character.
I love them both, and recommend this scent to those who enjoy Poison, and to those who don’t.
If you like spicy dark scents, you will enjoy Cobra…if you would like something subtly mysterious, evocative of spice markets and exotic locales, a little juicy, but not too flamboyant, a scent that causes people to lean closer to smell it better, Cobra is your scent. And it is definitely worth experiencing.
Cobra opens with a strong blast of spice, and the heart features wonderfully creamy sandalwood layered with even creamier orris, and spice. But the dry down really shines, as airy jasmine and creamy tuberose sparkle and shine, oily ylang ylang builds and sweetens the creamy woody notes, offsetting the darker spice notes, lightening the scent, and adding joy to your day. I consider this safely unisex, intriguing, and polished, perfect both for day and evening wear.
Ignore the goofy bracelet (which is actually kind of fun!) and the resemblance to a scent with more PR. Judge this beauty on its own merit. I blind bought this years ago, and it remains a favorite in my wardrobe. The dry down lasts forever, but is quite soft, so I actually recommend over applying (three sprays, step out of doors til the scent reaches manageable proportions) to obtain good sillage for the later phases.
This is one of my favorite scents for public speaking and presentations–it pairs wonderfully with a skirt, heels, and silk blouse, and reliably causes people to be very curious about me, what I have to say, and to find me approachable and warm. I’m not sure if this is the result of how I hold myself when I wear it, or the scent itself- regardless, it is a foundational scent in my professional wardrobe, and is universally appreciated by those around me.

There is a ‘poison’ like quality to this (or rather poison has a cobra like quality!) but it is not the same smell. Cobra opens with a terrible what I can only describe as ‘skanky’ smell, thankfully this disappears very quickly into an orange spicy smell with tuberose (big) and jasmine. The drydown is pure heaven, sandalwood, vetiver, cedar and floral. It lasts on the skin but for me its projection is not a big as poison but this makes it more attractive to me. It’s a little lighter, a little more subtle. It’s dark though. I love it……………..

I wish Ladypilot had taken the time to research this before slagging it off……Cobra is in fact NOT a ‘Copy of Poison’ or the cheaper alternative, Poison may in fact be a copy of Cobra, as Cobra has been around longer….Some people say its similar to Poison, but it was never made to compete or to give people a cheap alternative, because again……it was made before Christian Dior Poison.
I wear this in the colder months, because its too heavy for summer.
I actually like the bottle, and my snake bracelet has green eyes….. it appears they change the colours now & then.

I can’t be certain which formulation I have, but I only bought from a seller about a month ago. On me, it has lasted a full 12 hours. Needless to say, I’ve been pleased.
As to how close it is to the original Poison, all I can say is that as soon as I sniffed it, i immediately went back to the 80’s when I wore it as a teenager. If I had the scents two back to back, I can only assume that there would be differences as that is always the case with dupes. However, to my nose, the character of the two perfumes, the bone structure, if you will, is the same and the affect is the same. I know some will disagree. At the very least, I can say with no qualifications that Jeanne Arthes Cobra is closer to the original Poison than the current Dior Poison, in its sweet watery presentation could ever hope to be!
I am truly enjoying this fragrance again, after so many years without it and I am glad for the Jean Arthes version.

I like this, if finding it a little strange-slightly bitter, musky, definitely sexy, a little masculine, a bit down and dirty and it does remind me irresistibly of naughty goings on with the game-keeper or the labourer lover roaring in, raring to go, with sweaty clothes and dirty hands! WOW! Not terribly long lasting and to give it a lift and ensure longevity, I layer it with John Varvatos which has a similar sexy, slightly masculine edge to it, but femme’s itself and Cobra up a bit with some fruity and floral notes.
Sorry, I like the bottle and actually wear the cobra bracelet. Kitsch, so what! Good fun, inexpensive and unusual.

    WOW!!!!
    This is just outstanding.
And it smells exactly the same as Poison. The bottle is even the same shape and colour!
When my bottle arrived in the post i ripped open the packaging and sprayed… Just as i did, hubby walked in and said “wow that perfume is just gorgeous!!”
Sadly im not sure if it will last as long as Poison but at that price it is a true gem you cant afford NOT to have in your collection if you are a Poison lover like myself!
I would quite confidently say that if you buy a bottle of this you will save yourself a fortune tracking down a vintage bottle of the original formula. It’s miles better than the watered down version of Poison thats being sold in the shops today. Just wonderful!

Cobra, you can come and bite me anytime! It is so similar to Poison, but Cobra imo is exceptional! Thankfully I get no aldehydes. A heady mixture of tuberose, spices, jasmine, sandalwood and orange blossom, very soft and smooth, the Vetiver IMO only appears at the fading stage,a smoky cloud of powdery smoothness that lingers for a very long time and it is both comforting and deeply sensational. I kept getting waftings of it hours after application! An ‘old school’ gem but very feminine and alluring.

I ordered this because of the reviews that said it is the original scent of Dior Poison (the original 1989 formula). Since Poison is my all time favorite perfume I knew I had to hunt down a bottle of Cobra. I was astounded that it really does smell like Poison when first applied. It doesn’t have the depth or longevity of Poison, and it is much sweeter without the musk undertones. But I’m glad to have it in my collection for the sake of the history.

Just received this in the mail today and I was actually quite enjoying it for the first 15 mins. From first spray it does immediately remind me of something from the Poison line as my mother owns many of them and I have tried the majority of them. However, my skin is throwing so much of a smoky note atm that if I sprayed this all over I would worry that people are going to think I just came from a bonfire! Still, for what it’s worth, it is a lovely and intriguing perfume, perhaps not the sillage monsters that Dior produces but also quite unlike most of the perfumes I usually wear. I do think though, that my mum will make much better use of it so I will probably gift it to her (until I want it back to test again 😉

This one has a great sentimental value for me. Not the perfume itself, but the snake bracelet around the flacon. My grandma used to have it and proudly display it in her living room. I was six years old when it caught my eye and I immediately fell in love with the cobra. To me, this was the most interesting jewel I had ever seen, and so it has remained through the years. I would play with the bracelet for hours. My grandma’s snake had ruby red eyes and I believe this has defined my liking for red stones in jewellery.
Funnily enough, I never cared for the perfume, I didn’t even spray it once! So this is not a perfume review, it’s more of an appreciation for the beauty of perfume flacons and the role they can play in our lives, as well as anything beautiful.

This defines the early 90’s for me , every one smelled of this scent ..I don’t think it’s white floral at all , just too spicy & aldehydic for my taste …I wasn’t fond of this perfume back then & still isn’t ..In fact I was happy when its “trend ” was over …I don’t want to offend the childhood memories of someone for sure but it was just a trendy perfume back then rather than a a classic to cherish …

I know that every single perfume is made to accentuate a special kind of inner and outter beauty that a person may possess, in fact, perfume is one of the best ways to do this. When it comes to this one, hard as i try i cannot understand which kind of beauty this would stand for. My friend loves the bottle, i will gift it to her with the juice left inside.

My long lost bracelet!!! This brings back memories…. ohhhhhhh childhood =)
My mom had this perfume in her collection for many many years and as u can imagine my dolls and i all smelled like it… LOL
When my mom would be busy i would sneak into her closet grab one of her elegant ivory silk shirts, put the cobra bracelet on and paint my face with ALL my moms makeup, as a final touch i would spray as much of the perfume on me as possible… so much so that my mom would be able to smell it from the other side of the house and trace the scent all the way into the bathroom where i would be standing on my step stool and admiring my masterpiece … ha ha ha – what a silly kid i was =p
About the perfume – it was an elegant evening scent that would last and last and last …. and then last some more. An 80s smell – very bold and unapologetic yet sweet and mysterious at the same time.
I would love to purchase this one again…. for nostalgia’s sake =)

It does remind me of Poison although it doesn’t last as long. I agree is more plain and casual without loosing the elegance and sophistication of Poison, which is one of my favorite perfumes of all time.. It comes with a bracelet; very unique & kind of tacky, but still very cool. 😀 I like it.

Poison was created later than Cobra, that’s why is so refined. I have both, they are similar, not the same, but both of them are very nice, warm, and log lasting (on my skin) everybody asks me what smells so nice 🙂

I bought this without trying. I wanted Dior Poison but since everyone keeps comparing them I thought 8 quid would be better than splurging about 40. Had I sniffed it first I would not have bought it. It is not similar enough to me. Poison is hands down better, and a completely different scent. Poison smells younger even tho it’s ‘old’ in perfume years. It’s in the same direction I can smell notes that reminds me of Poison. But this one will be handed over to willing family member.

I bought this as a blind buy, i sprayed it and it smells like strong tea/ gherkin on the top notes, it took a while to settle down and when it did it turned into quite a nice scent a powdery orange scent of some kind. If the top notes were nicer i would definitely wear it . The bracelet is nice too

Cobra is older than Poison and for me no any difference between them, just Cobra is stronger.

Delighted i now own this fabulous perfume. Love everything about it! The bottle, the snake bracelet and of course the fragrance itself, very like Dior poison but a bit nicer in my opinion 🙂

I took a risk and blind bought this after seeing FunkyTomo’s review and that you could get it cheaply from a UK website.
I had never liked Poison after being around so many women doused in it in the late 80’s and haven’t dared even sniff it on a tester since. Recently, through my new-found hobby of collecting perfumes I am seeing fragrances in a completely different light, appreciating notes in the opening right through to the drydown.
So, I ordered a 100ml bottle of Cobra with some of the money given to me for Christmas, hoping that my more ‘mature’ nose would appreciate this type of fragrance now, and knowing that this would be a ‘lighter’ fume than Poison.
It arrived yesterday (delivery was super-fast) and I waited until this morning before apprehensively spraying a tiny amount on one wrist. The opening was a bit strong but after just 10 minutes it smelled absolutely lovely on my skin, prompting me to go back and re-spray more liberally!
I’ve been wearing this for an hour now and it is lovely. I am wearing black with some sequins today (being New Year’s Day I’m dressed up a bit) and it feels just right, very elegant. I am absolutely delighted.

Mind you if its so rare , i predict silly prices so I shall have to get some real

Cobra is now on its way to me. 🙂

Jean Arthes Cobra is a copy of Christian Dior’s Poison, a very nice one, minus the top-notes of the latter (which I hate). I absolutely lust over Poison’s dark and sexy dry-down, but it is still too strong of a scent for me to be able to wear on most occasions, or even to tolerate for long periods of time. With Cobra, I don’t have to worry about suffocating myself or others, because apart from lacking the hideous top notes of Poison, it is also much lighter which makes this a more wearable Poison like others have mentioned. It also very budget friendly too, and that’s always a plus with me. This is a scent I can see myself wearing to a jazz lounge with a little black dress on, or to work the next day in a crisp white shirt and slacks, I think it is elegant enough for a 20-something who appreciates Poison but is afraid to wear it and wishes it wasn’t so overpowering…to date, I h
