Description

Citrus Bigarrade is a unisex fragrance that was made for an extraordinary couple—a former king of England who sacrificed his crown to marry the stylish divorcée who had captured his heart. The name of this perfume translates to “bitter citrus”—perhaps an allusion to the difficulties of romance.

This zesty fragrance opens with bergamot and citrus notes. The heart follows with neroli flower, and the base consists of ambergris. Citrus Bigarrade was launched in 1901. The nose behind this fragrance is Henry Creed Fourth Generation.

I’ve sampled all of the gray-cap older Creeds, and my opinion is that they all smell like barbershop aftershave that has been sitting too long. There is a common thread of pee throughout this ancient exhumed line of Creeds. See my reviews of Chevrefeuille, Zeste Mandarin, Baie de Genievre, and (porn-chic) Acier Aluminium. All animalic pee scents with a covering of spices, leaves, and rinds. You can smell the antiquity even though they were originally mass-marketed in the 80’s.

“It was made for a extraordinary couple.”
In 1901 Edward was 7 years old.

I’m finally reviewing this after several retestings. As remarked elsewhere, I meant to replace it with Neroli Sauvage because it was weak (how ironic!) but I soon learned the error of my ways. It’s basically just a run-of-the-mill EdC, pretty intermediate on the scale of sharp vs. flowery citrus. The very top notes are a good rendition of the rind of a freshly-squeezed lemon slice. It gets weak fairly soon (though not unusually so for this genre) but manages to stay natural and unambiguously masculine. Even in the end, when it’s gotten very weak, it still maintains more of the original zing than you typically find with these. It’s perfectly decent stuff, but there’s no need to pay Creed prices for a standard Eau de Cologne.

Oh my goodness is this a pretty citrus neroli mix with a stunning amber dry down!
The opening is sweet, sexy and fresh with a zesty bite. (a love bite 😉
Citrus with neroli in equally wonderful proportions..Sweet but not cloying, crisp but not too cologne-esque. It’s elegant and smooth despite that it’s a fruit based scent. The amber is a shadow note, it is always slightly noticeable and gains strength in the dry down where it warms and softens. It’s a wonderful mood lifter and perfect for warm days or relax days. It’s such a pretty darling and should be sniffed by all citrus/neroli fans…I am in love…and I want to sleep on a bed of citrus neroli amber this summer!
Silage is: yes, the garden of Eden had not just apples! – longevity is: on me a deliciously juicy 5+ hours in which it becomes an amber syrup neroli balm. *YUM*
*FunFact* This darling was a favourite with both Edward & Wallis, the infamous couple who’s love affair caused the abdication of Edward VIII in 1936 as King of England.
A kingdom for a woman – a His & Hers Creed for both. I recommend.

It’s true, the opening really is the most beautiful citrus opening. Very sweet, tart and a little spicy its so real. the Neroli middle is just a good with a gallant ambergris base. Has a very earthy feel to it and from a distance you can smell the unique marriage the ingredients create.
PM me if your interested in getting your hands on a sample I have a few on hand.

So, Edward and Wallis smelled the same! Can imagine this one suiting her to a “T”!

Beautiful opening of tart citrus, like gin and lemonade, but then the drydown becomes a citrus whisper on a light amber base. It ends too soon and very close to the skin on me.
