I have been curious about the house of Cereus for a long time, and finally ordered a sample. Unsweetened citrus? Sounds good. Green apple? Lemon? That sounds fine EXCEPT… Papyrus, something I wasn’t familiar with before now, but papyrus blended with unsweetened citrus smells slightly putrid to me! Let me give you a visual: It’s like an exterminator crawling through a dusty attic searching for whatever died (that dead rodent smell), and while he is crawling through the attic, he’s chewing spearmint gum. THIS is my experience with Cereus #4. I understand several people LIKE it, but I can’t get past that slightly putrid smell. And as they say on Shark Tank, “for this reason, I’m out”.

Cereus pour Homme No. 4 smells like green apples to me. It is fruity, fresh, with a little bit of tanginess. The blend makes for pleasant scent. The opening reminds me of the tiny multi-colored bead fresheners that the kids were addicted to back in my High School years. There’s some muskiness in the drydown that is quite similar to Versace Eau Fraiche, but the fruitiness stays in the background.
On my skin, longevity is just average, so is the projection. But for $15 shipped on ebay (2.5 oz tester, no cap, no box), you can’t go wrong with Cereus 4, especially during the warmer months.

Sniffed this at Barney’s one day and fell hard for it. Sprayed it on and an hour later couldn’t detect it at all on my skin. Still, I wanted it. It was $125. Searched for it on ebay and found it for $14!!!! I couldn’t believe it and bought it right away. I love the scent but the longevity is just blah. You can find the entire line up from this house online for just a few bucks. The reviews for the whole Cereus line are not very good. I wear it to bed and when I wake up I smell nothing. Such a shame.

Cereus No. 4 is basically a men’s version of D&G Light Blue pour Femme. Like Light Blue, the prominent notes are green apple, lemon, and wood (papyrus in this case). It’s tart, sour, and smells quite natural to my nose. A rather light fragrance that stays very close to the skin. Perfect for hot weather.

I have decided that I will collect all of these Cereus masculines due to the great prices you can find online (cheaper than most low end designers now). I own 7 and decided to pick this up due to the great price.
I was pleasantly suprised on how good this actually is. Now let me preface this with the fact that it does have performance issues from a sillage perpective. You may get a good 2-3 hours before it comes in to the skin; however, that isn’t necessarily bad as I am learning.
This is sharp and a bit metallic due to the apple/papyrus combination but not in a bad way. As one of the other reviewers pointed it this is not sweet at all. It is sort of a tart dry green apple with this sort of screechy note. It smells like there is vetiver or some woodsy/musky note in there also. This is sort of like Versace Eau Fraiche but it isn’t sweet nor is it acquatic.
For what you can get this for this is great for meetings, movies, church, family dinner or any other place where closeness to others may require a more subtle scent.
As stated earlier I am beginning to learn that there are times where a nice aroma is more appropriate than filling a room or even having others that aren’t a few inches away from you smell you. If those far away from you can smell you then you may be assaulting those close by. Scents like this Prada Infusion, Mugler Cologne, a nice Bvlgari scent may be appropriate given the environment and situation. Being fragrant could very way be better received.
Anyway this is nice for the $20 or so dollars you will pay for a tester but would be nice even at a designer price.

true… it’s a nice fair combination as the green apple gives the hype of freshness and simi-sweetness so as of the papyrus, but the silage and the longevity are quite weak. on my arm it vanishes within an hour! i wish they can produce a limited edition of this one with a powerful longevity, i guess by then ill think seriously of getting it.
edit: as of my other testing today (13th aug 2014) i guess this is not a niche perfume, it is so much common to those watery common fragrances! kind of artificial rather than good, i guess im going to skip on this one for good!

Wow! Cereus no.4 what a lovely fragrance. Opens a bit strangely, kind of synthetic but not in an aquatic way more of a fruit cocktail sort of thing, reminds me of sweets and E numbers! It does have a slightly watery quality and a slight smell of papyrus but when it settles those fruits are nothing but pleasing. A blend of apple which comes off more like pear with citrus and frankly nothing else! I’m not disappointed in that its a lovely smell it’s the lack of longevity that is an issue and at this price you’d expect better.
I have to say the smell is addictive while it lasts.

I don’t understand how anyone could say this scent smells like bleach, if that is the case for a dab vial sample, I would be concerned that someone tampered with it! The fruit is very obvious and lasts quite a while. The papyrus is not obvious and is more of a background hum, at least for the first couple of hours. Perhaps it helps dry things out, because this is on the dry side (and it’s certainly not particularly sweet). As you might expect, it’s a simple scent, and it doesn’t have great richness, but it doesn’t smell super-synthetic to me either. This would be excellent for school or the office on warm to hot days, assuming you don’t want to “make a statement.”
UPDATE: Several hours in and there is a nice balance among the fruits, papyrus, and musk. I’m not a fan of this kind of synthetic musk, but it isn’t that “laundry” kind, thankfully. I’d rather wear scents like vintage Green Water instead of this one, but at least it is tasteful and pleasant (if the synthetics don’t bother you).
UPDATE #2: Something seemed to bother me more and more with each wearing so I decided to swap it off. This is one I’d suggest sampling a few times before buying! I bought Unbreakable after this one, and I really like how the apple note is handled there, by contrast.

Got two samples and the both smell like bleach after 5 mins terrible fragrances 1/10
    Dont even think about it!

I’ll give Cereus praise for gearing their fragrances toward the mature suit and tie crowd. However, for this particular scent; there are soooooo many better options. No 4 is the least interesting one from this house. I can think of many designer fragrances that adds more in terms of value. I don’t want to deter anyone from checking this out(probably too late) because I find all Cereus fragrances wearable. If the conversation is about value, then that’s a different subject….

The problem with this is the lack of sweetness undermines the image the natural notes may conjure. This is unsweet, fresh and clean type of citrus. Not the sweet, sensual and lush/tart variant.
Which is fine, for people that prefer it that way. However, I’m a lover of the sweet n’ tart in citrus so this no frills almost ‘laundry-sheet’ clean was never going to appeal. Read, simple scent.
The apple is of the crisp, ultra fresh variant and is accompanied by a green/lemon citrus in the background. But that, is quite just about it. A reviewer has already brilliantly summed it up, ‘a transparent vetiver’ for the greenness and ‘awful projection’.
It is indeed a very simple scent, linear and simply very little on offer.
    2/5.

This reminds me of a mixture between L’eau D’issey and Versace Man Eau Fraiche with a small touch of Dior Homme Sport. It’s has a light sweetness that’s outweighed by a tart (sour) green apple and some green, woody elements. It’s a very nice green, citrus scent but it only lasted 15 minutes on my skin and it vanished. That’s a first for me. Sillage wasn’t that great either. Would I drop $125 for a 2.5 oz bottle? Probably not considering there are less expensive niche alternatives but Cereus No.4 was surely adored for our 15 minute rondevu.

After an hour this becomes a skin scent. Awful projection and longevity and the opening is just citrus, green apple, and papyrus which basically smells like a transparent vetiver. After an hour all your going to smell is a hint of apple and papyrus. After 2 hours you’ll smell nothing at all. This is a suckers buy and the notes give it away.

I like the opening – the citrus and green apple are nice and crisp, but they don’t come off as being synthetic. And as a plus, the citrus isn’t overdone like it is in so many fragrances’ openings today.
Things start to mellow out, and while I’m not entirely clear on what the papyrus note is supposed to smell like, I assume that it’s responsible for this. It may be the thing that resembles vetiver to my nose, and it helps balance out the sweeter topnotes.
This is a niche fragrance, so it comes with a niche price tag…and I’m not entirely sure if it’s worth it. Still, I like it, and the bottle looks nice! The first time I tried this, the opening really reminded me of Lacoste Style in Play. I have them on side by side right now, and Style in Play is definitely more harsh with a synthetic feel, but it could be a designer “alternative” to Cereus No. 4.

So I’ve got you on my skin, and in my face, and in the brain where your fragrant compounds react with the excited verbal cortex producing this string of words trying to slither around your transient nature:
You utter your opening chord to me in a cloying citrussy thrust, not much more, and nothing else but citrus. Citrus, citrus evrywhere, the vision gets really yellow with the tinge of something woody in the background – might it be the mentioned papyrus? ,cedar? And then, rather swiftly after the introduction, you lose your yellow intensity and transform yourself into citrusy weakling lingering onandonandon until the lemonade drydown. Now you are revealing yourself – you are a lemonade with the class, paper umbrella and sugar frosted glass. And
mandatory wooden walking stick. You’ll be gone with the gulp, maybe two. Cheers. Thanks for stopping by.

According to LuckyScent the notes in Cereus No.4 are as follows: cedrat(citron), grapefruit, green apple, tagetes (marigolds), marine notes (calypsone?), galbanum, vetiver and papyrus. So yes, Natt, there are more than three notes here…MUCH more!!
As a big fan of citruses (and their ilk) I am in love Love LOVE with this fragrance. So clean, so bright, so “shiny”, so absolutely pure!!! The listed citruses are usually dry, sour or zesty. Here the crisp granny smith adds tart sweetness to a bright freshness; and the marigolds and “calypsone” keeps it clear and fresh like water but not overly “aquatic” with dry, soft flowery nuances. Amazing! The utterly green vegetal drydown is superb: galbanum’s resiny almost powdery green “scream”, here, is quieted to a softer feel (sotto voce); the vetiver is dry and clean, and the papyrus (a pulpy reed-like scent) adds just enough uniqueness to the other basenotes to keep it earthy, yet ethereal (in how it smells and feels, not how it lasts). For a citrus aromatic to last this long…there must be some quality ingredients and masterful blending here! I MUST own a bottle of this wonderful fragrance!!!
    Sillage: very good
    Longevity: way above average
    Overall: 4.5/5
Cereus named their company after a flower that blooms one night a year in the middle of summer. To see (and smell) that must be simply amazing! This House is aptly named: their scents are rare, stunning beauties and it is a true scentophile pleasure to sniff and wear them. Thanks again Natt, for sharing this incomprable scent with me!!!

Cereus No.4 first caught my attention because of I have this fetish for wooden cap. It’s just like Kenneth Cole Signature, but its scent doesn’t do anything for me. This is not the same case with Cereus.
Cereus No.4 is nothing like any Citrus Aromatic scents I have tried in the past. Even though there are only 3 ingredients listed but I smell more than that. By the way, I have no clue how the papyrus smells, so I am not gonna even bother trying to figure it out.
Its opening note is super clean, fresh, and savory. Savory?! :)~ Yes, I smell something like fresh cut celery, juicy fresh apple bits, sweet orange, and a really mild spicy ginger. There may not be celery (or it’s papyrus?!) but it does smell like it! It smells so tasty that I just wanna pour over ice and drink it. After about 15 minutes, the celery begins to disappear. The savory vibe is still there however. Oranges are still present, but not as prominent as this light ginger. In addition, I smell something rooty/woody; giving the scent a little maculine feel. OMG! It smells so good. I just wanna trade ALL of my citrus scents for one of this!
Alright. So the scent is absolutely amazing. It s similar to Eau De Cartier at the base, but Cereus has way better opening. Now here is the problem. It’s quite a niche fragrance, which means it’s hard to find and expensive. Also, the lasting power is questionable as it is cologne on its label. For all citrus aromatic fans, this is the one to try; a must try!!! and do not miss it if you come across one.
Update: Bought it and love it!
