Testing this today from an official sample.
First off, I hate the dip-stick sample bottles with the wedged in plastic lids. I know they have to be firmly in situ, to prevent leakage, but getting them open involves patience (a quality in which I am lamentably lacking, unless it involves animals or children) and care (a quality I don’t possess at all).
Having got the top off, I tried to dab a sample on the back of my hand and accidentally spilled most of the vial all over it instead (see above qualifier about “care”). The perfume is rich, dense, dark and reddish, almost the colour of a very dry red wine. I suspect this will stain light-coloured clothing.
All I can smell is wood smoke, the slightly resinous smell of burning pine or fir. I’ve left this to dry down for nearly three hours now and the smell hasn’t altered or developed in any way. Given the comparisons to The Vagabond Prince Enchanted Forest, I was expecting to smell blackberry, but there is no hint of sweetness at all.
I was hoping for an early morning walk through late autumn woods, leaves crisp on the ground, still rimed with a little frost, a few ripe blackberries remaining on the brambles in the nearby hedgerow and smoke from an open fire drifting on the light breeze. Unfortunately, all I have is a bonfire…
I own and love Serge Noire, which is often considered a challenging perfume, but Blackbird has beaten me.
ETA. I don’t believe perfume has gender – wear whatever you like – but to me, Blackbird smells like a more conventionally masculine than feminine scent.

This smells like the outdoors. This is picking blackberries in the late august sun. The “green” smells are incredible natural! Wow. I feel like I am sticking my nose up to a real sappy tree.
The blackberry makes it sweet, and smell more like a perfume than a forest. It’s opening up quite nicely and becoming more and more sweet.
    I like this.
It did burn my wrist a bit after application. Hmm…

Wow my skin just killed a frag, lol.
Blackbird made me realise my skin does horrible things to coniferous, terpenic tree family notes. Not only does it amp them to high heaven, they become absolute DEATH. Cypress turns to CAT PEE and fir is straight up GASOLINE. It’s so horrible I thought there was something wrong with the juice at first and it almost stung, like I’d poured actual petrol on myself, I could feel the skin on my wrist vibrating like just before you break out in a rash. That lasted for 3 hours against a faint background of plummy blackberry then finally disappeared. The last hour was just the faintest blackberry and musk sad strangled ghost of a perfume.
I really love Ellen Covey’s work, I applaud her willingness to take a risk and make big bold polarising scents so Blackbird doesn’t put me off her ouvre at all but unfortunately this just doesn’t work with my skin. I normally love woody notes too, cedar seems ok tho I amp that as well. I wonder which other conifers my skin will assasinate next?!

Slightly sweet black berry on musky somewhat resinous wood. I might get the fir but it’s not prominent. Linear but that’s not a bad thing. The notes get a little smoother, fuzzier on the dry down. Very natural smelling. Black berry jam just like Lishypants says below.
Unisex, all ages and occasions. Performs well; lasted seven hours before turning soft. Probably better in cooler weather. Ellen Covey’s creations are pricey but the quality is there. Great frag but not for me.

Have the sample size, its intriguing for sure. Its 10 hours of blackberry jam. Not overly sweet, it is very linear, no morphing here.
A few other very faint notes I get are: rose stems, dirt and powder. If you like realstic fruit this ones for you.
I think it would be good layered with something to add depth. I probably not going to get a full size – interesting but not really complex enough.

I’m unsure about this one. On one hand we have a beautiful syrupy berry that is full bodied and unlike any artificial blackberry smell and occasionally I get a wonderful cedar note. On the other hand I’m definitely getting the sharp, sour, acrid, medicinal note that others mentioned. It will be interesting to see if it wears down in a couple hours but if it doesn’t I don’t know if I can see this becoming a favorite, which is unfortunate because it really is a good berry
After about 3 hours the medicinal note is still detectable. It may be weaker or I may just be used to it. It actually smells impressively similar to when it was first applied. — So if you test this and like it after a minute or two you’re really likely to like it later too.

Blackbird is so much more and so much better than I expected. Mystical, mysterious and enchanting. Unique yet comforting. Real, juicy, jammy blackberries and crisp woods. The Fir seems to be what everyone is picking up most, but I’m really getting the cedar note. Cedar tends to give me a sour feel (as it does in D&G Light blue), but the blackberry is so fresh and rich that it keeps everything smooth.
If anyone here is a lover of paranormal novels of any sort, this scent really projects that vibe.
I only dabbed on two swipes from my sample, one on my wrist and one on my shoulder, and it lasted over 12 hours and I could smell it just as long, though it was never too strong.
Full bottle worthy, without a doubt.

This is such a real blackberry – just exactly like the ones we used to pick when I was a child!!! Yum yum yum!!! They are (and the perfume is too) so so delicious!!! It’s just completely true to life for me. I adore it. And it’s incredibly long lasting and has a good powerful sillage; I get fabulous compliments!!! People say ‘mmm….yum…blackberries!!!!’ I feel so good in it! And classy and very refined too. It’s the fir that really makes it elegant and refined. And I looove the bottle. Such a classy elegant black.

When you start testing a new fragrance house, either you like their guerlinade, or you don’t. A right-thinking house will have some cohesive element that ties together their scent offerings. A DNA that runs through their entire line. I thought I had it figured out, that it might involve Fir-Eucalyptus-Benzoin for Olympic Orchids (reference: Blackbird and Rainforest), but then that doesn’t come through for Woodcut. Hmm. Will need to continue getting to know these creations better.
As a whole, Olympic Orchids is reminding me of Slumberhouse. These are unique, well-thought-out works of art, with a strong following. I’d venture to say it’s even more wearable than Slumberhouse. There’s something comforting about the 3 ‘fumes I’ve tried so far from Orchids — an effortless love — that doesn’t require ‘learning to like’ that 1 or 2 weird accords that shake things up.
And like everyone else says, Blackbird smells like fir & blackberries. Thought you almost got away without hearing it? 😉
PS: Sometimes cassis, and cassis leaf turn urinous on my skin, but that is NOT happening here. Berries remain crystal clear, & unsweetened. Unisex. Ends with Benzoin. Lots of Benzoin / Styrax.

I have a sample and tried it again today. Sorry, I can’t get past the cherry cough syrup/berry cough drop association. Pine and blackberry sounded like an interesting combination but it doesn’t work for me. Black currant has that boxwood/cat urine note and I suspect that’s what the perfumer had in mind — but it doesn’t work here IMHO. I’d definitely suggest trying a sample or decant before going for a full bottle on this.

Blackbird is very nice. Very tart Blackberries, green woody notes, and a musky amber base but the blackberry note is the star and shines brightest all through the scent life. This is not a run of the mill fragrance ( Actually none of the Olympic Orchids Fragrances are that) so definitely try before buying but on me this blend of notes is really lovely, got a real dark fruity vibe that I like. Projection is good arms length but longevity is fantastic, lasts all day. Feedback has been mixed but that’s to be expected with such niche creations as they are not exactly mainstream smells, for eg, one friend thought I smelled nice like a fruit tart, My Dad thought it smelled like childrens cough syrup! I personally love it and now that I have used up my sample, will definitely be investing in a full bottle. Very nice. 8.5/10

Not just any old Blackberries. This transports me back to my childhood and the bush that was down the fence of my Gran’s partially shaded by big tall firs. We would be sent with small buckets to shoo away the birds and pick the largest, plumpest and fragrant for Granny’s jelly. Of course return with half buckets, lips and tongues purple, stubby little hands, fingers stained with juice and blood from the tiny wounds inflicted by the barbs. And a perfume ancient.
Blackbird is the scent opiate of those moments in my childhood.
Highly Recommended for those who share memories similar.

like all the olympic orchids i’ve tried this is very high quality for the modest price. on me the berry dominates, with the other notes playing a backing role, amplifying the natural darkness of the fruit.
the plump berry/darkness and amber formula reminds me of costume national scent intense. this could be a more natural, more universal and classier cousin. while intense has a synthetic, glamorous vibe this one feels perfectly everyday. pretty unsexy, but totally edible. if i was more inclined to the straightforwardly pleasing and not intrigue i would definitely go for a full bottle. pretty safe blind buy if the idea of wearing a true-to-life, not-to-sweet berry appeals to you.
moderate sillage and great longevity, with the juicy aspect lingering for a surprisingly long time.

I dabbed the dark, medicine like concoction onto my wrist and inhaled, I knew before it had even settled that this was going to be a full bottle purchase. Resinous, thick and beautiful. The truest blackberry I have ever smelt in a scent along with the balsam fir and cedar. The blackberry stays throughout for me but does not dominate, it’s not sickly sweet at all just gorgeous. The silage is moderate and the longevity is great, this lady sure has an exquisite nose! I’ve been testing a few of this range and they are just intoxicating, bold and beautifully blended.

I’m very sorry but my review isn’t going to be positive. For my nose it’s too gourmet and sweet despite the fact that I like sweet perfumes. I’d say it’s too simple to be a perfume I can easily imagine a scented candle smells like this or cough syrup as was mentioned before. All the notes are straightforward. Not bad scent but for me personally this is not a perfume.

You know this is going to be good stuff when you put it on your wrist. The colour is like a rich red wine or syrupy cough medicine. The smell is quite simply divine, such a realistic blackberry and fir smell, just like hiking in the hills where I live! The smell has an addictive but natural quality that I love. I have seldom smelt anything as natural smelling, the similarity to real hedgerows and conifers is uncanny! The overall perfume us balanced and simply beautiful. Love.

there is a promising hint of dark juiciness and pine but this unfortunately is mostly straight-up overwhelming alcohol on me that just does not subside… i don’t know why this is the case 🙁

The berries in the opening are the perfect sweetness. The berry note never really goes away, but it does tone down as time goes on. They berries are actually deep & dark. I think the hay adds to the sweetness.
The other notes become more prevalent after the first few minutes. It’s like the berry starts to change with the other notes. There is a lot of depth in this potion. It actually reminds me of,
    wait for it,
    Orchids !!!
What comes to my imagination when I wear this are some kind of deep, dark, & purple orchids. The other thing this composition reminds me of is a fine wine. Perhaps a berry wine. The cedar, amber, & fir create luxurious feel. I feel like there is a beautiful dark purple cloud around me when I wear this. A stunning composition.
This combination of notes could easily be from a “Guerlain” or another successful perfume house.
I have decided to sample this line properly. So I am going to give each one in my discovery kit a full complete wearing. I’ve been wearing this one all evening and will go to sleep with it later.
UPDATE (6 hours later)- I find there is not far reaching silage, rather a radiation around you. The fragrance is lasting long, even though it has thinned out, its still going. Still smells rich.
The impression that I get from reading about the founder of this house online, is that she is successful in her other fields of employment. Olympic Orchids is not something that she “has to do”, or a business she “has to run”. It is something that she seems to LOVE. To me that would indicate that Olympic Orchids is an outlet for her passion & artistry. And it shows!

You are taking a walk in a primeval forest somewhere in Europe, or the Pacific northwest, the scent of the trees wafts round, scenting the air, along with a hint of fresh hay from a nearby field, you find clusters of beautiful ripe blackberries, you fill a basket with them, but are unable to resist eating half the harvest on the way home.

wow…i didn’t pick the blackberries! i immediately thought “jammy rose with a heap of beta damascone”…how wrong was i.
the sweet fruitiness is UNBELIEVABLE. off the wall. it will blow you away or give you a minor cavity. super sweet. to be honest, i don’t smell ANYTHING other than the sweetness, but it’s well put together and i could be persuaded to get a sample of this…

I am head over heels for this perfume. I live in the Pacific Northwest and one thing I love so much about the place that I live is the scent of it. We have miles of thick green forest and the himalayn blackberry grows near every road and edge of the woods. On a warm summer day the heady resins of douglas fir and cedar hang in the air simply laced with the smell of juicy blackberries. This perfume is exactly how it smells. I have been wearing this through out our gray damp winter and I can just close my eyes and inhale and actually feel the warmth of the summer sun around me.

I’ve only worn this for a day so far. It is beautiful. It’s luscious, overripe blackberries to open, a bit boozy, with a faint mustiness (may be the hay?). The berries are incredibly juicy and hyperrealistic, almost but never quite too sweet. Then, there is dry, warm fir and a long lasting musky/woody base. I’m living in a perpetual snow dome right now, and this perfume feels at home in the northern environment while also brightening my mood by evoking golden late-summer warmth. So lovely.
Update: I still love this. It’s changeable, and some days the berries are so dominant I can’t smell much else; on other days it smells really woozy and wine-like. To my absolute delight, I’ve discovered that layering it with CDG’s Avignon makes for the most heavenly marriage of incense, fir and berries imaginable.

Let me say up front: I’m not a big fan of fruity/sweety perfumes! Usually smells like cheap shampoo… Almost all of the times.
But guess what? Here’s different! It is a really lovely fruity fragrance! And I’m surprised I liked it this way… I can’t remember the last time this kind of perfume caught my attention… Maybe Calyx… A long time ago.
Now I’ll explain what I discovered with the help of Blackbird – I really like a good blackberry scent!
-Jubilation XXV: a well done smooky/ woody blackberry! Great.
-In Love Again: blackberry here is a kind of “supporting actress”… Always looking for the time to take the place of the the blackcurrant and/ or citrus notes. That never happens! Very good anyway!
-Mure et Musc: well, I’d rather not to talk about this one… Not my cup of tea! Never will be.
-and finally Blackbird: a terrific straight foward blackberry! The balsam fir note is quite good… But here the fruit is the “leading actress” in a great performance!
All in all, one of the few “fruit soliflore” that I would wear… too often!
    Stupendous!

I recently returned to this perfume and I must say that I feel have been unfair in my assessment. It was not my genre, but by wearing it I can not stop rave about its quality. It does not capture attention but it takes you to an enchanted contemplation. Addictive
(the perfume in my bottle hasn’t the same color as my first sample, perhaps a change?…for the best)

Super fragrant pine forest! Unlike some other perfumes mentioned in the reviews that have a pine note dominant, this one does not remind me particularly of Christmas. Instead it is more reminiscent of being in nature and enjoying the outdoors. Even better, it has great sillage and longevity on my skin. The berry accord enhances the bucolic feel. Closed my eyes, and it made me feel like I was camping in the great outdoors! Lasted all day!
Update – I like this so much I have worn it several days in a row now. It is beautifully sweet smelling and strangely addictive. It was wonderful waking up this morning and still smelling it on my skin. It smells so natural and refreshing. I am looking forward to being able to spray with a FB. All the better to spritz!
11/16 – had to order the FB! I am obsessed with this scent. The perfume is absolutely one of the best winter fragrances I have ever smelled. The pine is so fresh and clear. The berry is so lush. Blackbird makes you want to explore the secrets of nature. Beautiful.
12/18 – Already used up almost a full bottle! It is ridiculously good! Will have to get a FB every other month at this rate! Haven’t had this reaction to any other perfume – it is fresh, makes you want to smell it all day, and you don’t get tired of it like other scents. I have hundreds of perfumes to wear, but it is this one I reach for. The berry and pine mix deliciously and give you a “happy” boost in mood.

This smells like a pine scent with a few other notes to offset it slightly, but it’s a forest. In the beginning there is a little bit of a sweetness and a touch of light floral (not listed) and gives the distinct impression of being deep in the woods. It is an outstanding and realistic pure deeply wooded forest scent with musk (which is sharp on me) but in the end, I don’t want to smell like a forest.
This reminded me quite a bit of Fille en Aiguilles but lacks the nuances and balance of Serge’s. That being said, if for some reason you miss the forest and want to be reminded of it, this is the scent for you! I also think it’s a bit more masculine than feminine. The sillage is good and it lasts forever!

  28. :

    4 out of 5

Super sharp and acrid. I get sharp alcohol with a pine forest in the background and a tiny bit of blackberry which vanishes after a while. It’s too sharp for me to wear and reminds me of rubbing alcohol and turpentine. It has great sillage and withstands scrubbing.

This is definitely an interesting scent. Its very natural smelling. First blast I was surprised by a prominent sour blackberry note. To be honest it was rather offputing, the sourishness is almost like a fermented note. Underlying the sour blackberry note though is an interesting earthy, mossy layer which I suppose is from the balsam, fir. Thankfully, the sour note settles and the sweetness of the blackberry comes through. I would say this is a unisex fragrance. Very interesting and definitely worth trying out

Purrrr! This is a MUST try for berry lovers! With the advice of my fellow fragranticans, I HAD to try this puppy out, when I found out how affordable it was. It really is like going berry picking in the forest. I mostly smell dark JUICY blackberries, with very alive and green forest trees!!! If your testing it out for the first time, Id give it time to settle since at the beginning I got a little blast of the kitty pee note, but it disipates in about 15-20 mins or so. This is probably more of a fall/winter scent, but something about it makes me think it may be suitable for a summer night as well. On another note, I REALLY enjoyed getting a short handwritten note on my reciept! Very simple but it makes a difference. 🙂
Now I cant wait to try my samples of the devil collection (not in database)

Juicy ripe blackberries! Glorious creation. This is real blackberries, in the european woods, complete with the undergrowth, green resinous trees, musky animals…(this has a very strong musk note) fruit and leaves. It captures the darkness and light, a must try for an olfactory experience you wont forget. Love the black juice too. There is something addictive about this, makes you come back for more. This is also quite potent, a little goes a long way, blackberries sustain throughout. The only thing is… I would love this more without the musk.

As noted by others this perfume is very dark in color and should not come into contact with fabric while wet. I put this on a few hours ago and was immediately reminded of grape soda. The blackberry notes are a little grapey in my opinion, and I find them surprisingly sweet and sparkly. There is some woodiness in the background for sure, but I don’t think there’s quite enough to take this into unisex territory. On me this is feminine and fruity enough for a summer afternoon shopping on the boulevard or even a picnic in the park.

oh my my…this scent is just beautiful.lasts for a really good part of the day on my skin or on my clothes.the juice is dark.but most of my clothing is black so no problems there.i could wear this perfume anywhere.it is amazing that olympic orchards has so many lovely perfumes and are available in various sizes.also very reasonable in price.the packaging is also very well done.perfumer ellen is most gracious and included samples in both my orders.btw…so many compliments on whatever olympic orchids perfume i have on.so happy in arizona with some very outstanding fragrances.

This is simply GORGEOUS! I got it as a sample with my order and I love this. It’s smells extremely natural of fir, pine and blackberry, reminds me of a Russian forest. The longevity is not too long, but this is not perfume you wear for longevity, more for the beautiful experience for your self.
    Downside:
The color of the liquid is navy blue black, and it goes blue on your skin, which means you cannot spray it on your clothes or it will stain. That is why I’m even more sure this perfume is for skin only, for personal enjoyment, not to wear out.
I’m still considering getting a bottle.

Le Boyfriend tried this fragrance, and I think it’s wonderful. There was the very fruity *pop!* at the beginning, but this stage was rather fleeting, and it seemed balanced out by something resinous that kept the cloying quality of berry in check. The scent quickly evolved to a very nice and sustained cedar fragrance. This smells lovely and not like cedar closet but more like a grove of conifers.
Very pleasant. Not overpowering. After the berry quality dried down, the fragrance took on a sustained cedar quality which warmly emanated, but did not overpower. I am impressed with the quality of this fragrance. I will try it for myself, but I expect I will prefer it on a man.

I got a sample of this and at first whiff I was like “Oh no, it’s blackberry syrup!” Naturally, this did not last. One needs to let air get in and work up the olfactory experience.
This is mostly a dark woodsy balsam fir/pine based fragrance with a solid blackberry musk accompaniment. It’s semi-sweet into the dry down (not nearly as syrupy when first applied). Very masculine. If you’ve been remiss with visiting a humid fresh pine forest for some time, this will take you back there. And it’s got some complexity to it that makes it interesting and variant depending upon your nose.
I can’t speak much to sillage and longevity yet as I need to do more testing.

  38. :

I got a sample of this from Olympic Orchids. I put it on at bedtime and couldn’t even sleep it smelled so bad on me. The only scent I got was Tar. It stayed on me until morning and I couldn’t wait to shower and get it off.
I put a bit on my husband the next day and he smelled the berry and some musk, I smelled his hand, yup tar again. So I can’t honestly say it is bad, but on me it doesn’t work at all.

Blackbird is a pillar amongst its woody aromatic counterparts; fruity, intense, resinous, deep, and utterly daring. The black juice inside, aside from the fact that it stains the skin and clothes, is a road map to how unisex perfumes should be done. Upon first application, the fruity aspect, the Blackberry note, is prominent and smoky; a perfect opening volley that indicates what is to follow is going to be sexy, enigmatic, and interesting. The dark fruit note here serves as the tray the woods are served on. In the order of prominence, Balsam Fir, Cedar, and Musk are carried on the back of that glorious Blackberry until they all fade away, which is way over 12 hours. The Blackbird is what you would smell if you were to take a walk in the woods of the North on a rainy day and come across Blackberry patches along the way. The perfumer behind this took quite a risk composing this Black Beauty and the effort, in my opinion, was totally worth it. Recommended for all ages and genders who love to wear woody aromatic and are looking for the “dark edge” in a perfume without sacrificing the fresh aspect of it.

This is a strong perfume. I put it on at night and still could smell it the next morning. It is a bit medicinal, but the blackberry really smooths out the scent. I have a small sample and I feel a FB is in the future for this one. Resinous, balmy, a little bit sweet (from the blackberry). Absolutely love it.

well, it does open up potent that’s for sure! juicy slightly medicinal blackberry! oh so potent and woody. similar vibe to enchanted forest, minus the currant. dont overspray this folks this is edp! so far i like what i smell though; but the medicinalness persists for me at least. Anyone have any idea which note is causing it? Its very… camphorous/medicinal on me, a pass due to chemistry. I sadly can’t smell anything on me but the camphor/medicinal smell. I really really wanted to love this one. Strange, this is the only creation of Ellen Covey’s that doesn’t work at all with my chemistry. Sad, because I love all of her creations!

  42. :

It does not smell like Enchanted Forest but does have a similar vibe: boozy berry and evergreens and so amazingly natural! I have not smelled menthol at all (it is my Scents of Place discovery set box that have strong menthol scent). Blackberry note is very long lasting: I applied a modest amount of this perfume 13 hours ago and still smell blackberry. I am so impressed that it went straight to my favorite 5 shelf and I am seriously considering a backup.
Update: ordered a backup. Blackbird is irresistible!
Update: added 3 more bottles to my collection. Cannot live without this!

Absolutely the finest blackberry note in modern perfumery.

  44. :

    5 out of 5

This is certainly an unusual scent. It smelt medicinal straight out of the vial then shortly after I got the most delicious blackberry smell. I have a few blackberry perfumes but none compare to the blackberry in this, I could be sniffing the Fruits straight off the bushes that grow wild in my garden. Unfortunately the blackberry doesn’t hang around long enough for me. It becomes very menthol presumably the balsam fir and that’s what dominates. It’s been 6 hours since application and its very faint now, so longevity is good as is projection but not really what I would want to be projecting, think people would be asking if I was using a treatment for a cold. So it’s a pity about that delish blackberry loved that part but can’t see the rest of the notes as wearable for me.

  45. :

    5 out of 5

This strikes me a a sharp, pungent pine with a little hit of booze and berry. It’s not a feminine scent to me. Though if you want to smell of the Pacific Northwest woods, I think this would do the trick. To me, it’s a good home fragrance, but not a scent that feels human to me. There is a bit of a soapy berry smell in the drydown which I am finding off-putting.

Having a childhood in the Adirondack woods has left it’s scent memory of Balsam Fir and blackberries. This takes me there, sans black flies and bears! Very different and adventurous. Certainly masculine but a woman could wear this…I know I would.

I agree with the review below, but that doesn’t stop this from being amazing.
This is dark and sexy – a brilliant blackberry cognac and scenes of midnight above the timberline. The incense and spice projects the warmth of intimacy but with a flawlessly virile quality. The whole thing is overt and dramatic, at once smooth and dangerous. It’s not all that linear. It just takes forever to develop. The sex is there; it’s just buried underneath.
Though this may be the essence of the metrosexual vampire on a man, it would be simply deadly on a woman. If you’re into the woody incense vibe but want something with a bit more animalic heft, Dev #2 by the same brand is almost precisely this.

    173) Still a better love story than Twilight
No the perfume is not as bad as the movies, but the smell of deep forest and berrie irresistibly makes me think to a lost little girl that the bad wolf awaits behind the trees.
First the perfume seems incongruous is mainly hay (Caligna – Artisan Parfumeur) but we quickly left the field to the dark forest with the fir balsam, the cedar and berries.
Unfortunately, the story is a bit short, I anxiously awaiting the wolf arises, for something to happen and what? BOUH! Robert Pattinson!…What?! Oh NO that sucks!
In fact it remains linear, not really expressive, too bad because it’s an excellent head and base for a super fine perfume, it lacks just of a pulsing heart.
Excellent longevity, good sillage, perfect quality (as always).
