@Wet1, i personally don’t think that you’re much of an “alpha male” or a “guy’s guy” if you can’t wear this with ease. If you think that Sauvage and Invictus Intense are alpha male fragrances, you’re probably 14 years old.

As a masculine guy, I wasn’t sure about this one. I typically wear Aventus, Sauvage, Invictus Intense, some popular clones, etc, so I was weary about a uni-sex scent. After seeing some rave reviews, I blindly ordered this one as I wanted something different from the norm. Probably crazy given the price point, but I figured if I didn’t like it I could either give it to the GF as a gift, or resell it if neither of us liked it.
The packaging it first rate, as it should be for the price.
The product itself: My first thought was “interesting, but worthy of all the hype and the price? And is this something I will want to wear as an alpha male?” After wearing it for a couple of weeks, the answer… It depends.
Is it worthy of the hype? I have not smelled the original 540, which I’m sure it resembles, but short of that, I can’t really compare it to anything else on the market. So in that regard, this scent is totally unique and something the person next to you will not be wearing. Is it a truly pleasing scent? I would say yes. It’s very hard to describe over the internet, although think caramelized or slightly burnt sugar. It’s less of a traditional fragrance which might have a spicy or a musky scent that people automatically think “applied fragrance worn to smell good”, but rather it smells like someone was working in the kitchen making delicious caramelized apples, cooking down sugar, wiping up cotton candy, etc. All pleasant odors that smell good and invoke warm memories, but far from a traditional applied perfume or cologne. It’s different, pleasing, but far from traditional. Maybe this makes it worthy of the hype. Worthy of the price, probably not. In fact, no it’s not worth the $$$, unless you must have top shelf stuff, don’t care about what it cost, and are looking for something pleasing and different.
As a guy’s guy, is this a scent I want to wear? Initially, I didn’t think it really fit me… and I’m still not 100% sold on it being ‘me’. It’s not like it’s flowery or feminine smelling, it isn’t, although I would find it attractive on a woman (it’s smells good on my GF, she likes it a lot). With that said, I do like the way it smells and I have not heard a negative comment about it. Over the last week I have had many women make positive comments about the fragrance, so it does get compliments. So based on the positive reinforcement, I will selectively continue to wear it, but I don’t see this becoming my signature scent either.
Performance? Sillage is subtle, it doesn’t hit you like a hammer, yet powerful that it will fill a small room in no time. No need for more than two sprays with this one, in fact one is probably plenty! Longevity? Amazingly long. Put a couple of sprays on a piece of clothing and you will smell it for days, possibly even weeks! Months if left unwashed and stored away in the drawer? I wouldn’t be surprised!
Interesting and different. If you have money to burn, I don’t think most would be disappointed with this one…

metallic rubies. it is a “wow” fragrance. I dislike the edp. It think its the fir resin.

  4. :

    3 out of 5

It is a straight up combination of sweetness and ambergris. It lasts well up to ten hours and has a great sillage. I like it, but not enough to buy a full botte. I have decants that will do good.

  5. :

its a very strking fragrance. Its also almost 500 US dollars for 70ml. Thats insanely pricey. And honestly, im oretty sure its not three times more value. Caron third man sells for a fourth that. And the Caron is a classic. That all said, yes this is a classy very striking ambergris forward blend. Now i can buy ambergris from various saudi or middle east perfumeries. for a lot less than this. Ok, well, its got that great salty oceanic edge and its projection is good, and its lasts for 24 hours. No joke. But that price stops me dead in my tracks. Its a bit obscene to be honest.

It smelled so special on a scent strip, so I was very excited to get a sample. I put it on myself last night, and the first thing that jumped out to me was strong black pepper(!) and some sort of sweet fruit, like pear and nectarine. Those notes are not present in the description, but on my skin it became “unpleasantly peppery fruit”. It didn’t develop into anything mellow on the dry down, and since I had read that this perfume lasts for about 24 hours I was afraid that I’d be stuck with it for the entire night because I sprayed it on 4 pulse points. Well the good news was that it faded away after a few hours. I guess my skin is not meant for this…

Honestly, in real life, I’m just sitting there sniffing my t-shirt like a mad woman thinking “nobody understands!! this is heavenly godliness of goood” but then I come to read the comments here and feel at peace again. Yup, it’s good, just THAT good. Everyone should try it out at least once in their life.
One spray on cotton shirt, 7h later, shivers down my spine.
I’m cheesy enough to post the haiku I wrote to a fellow fragonerd about this perfume:
    Red lips twirling up
    Deep in cedar heaven is
    Soul Mine cleansed by light
Oh btw, I’m layering this over ANYTHING I’m wearing recently. It’s adding this lightful glory to anything I wear. I could be wearing old gym clothes with this and feel like a fairy.

If you’re a guy, whatever you do make sure you sample this before buying a full bottle because this is being hyped to to Max! It’s very metrosexual and feminine so it’s not for every guy. Definitely high quality juice and clearly put together by a highly skilled perfumer. Smells a lot like the original so I don’t think it’s worth owning both. As for me, I gave my samples to the wife and she likes it but nowhere as much as others that found heaven in the bottle. Once again, sample first unless money is no object to you.

EDP or Extrait; They are both the same Baccarat Rouge 540, They both last 24 hours and more ;on skin or on the hairs on your head/Days on clothing.
I have both formulas and honestly they last that lone; I was washing it off 12 hours later and it was strong as the minute I apply my first spray,
Sorry but I could not detect the difference between the two!, They both smells like a million $!
The sprayer on my bottle is so powerful; I can see it empty the bottle with every spray!
    Scent 10/10
    Long lasting 10/10
    Silage 10/10
    Thanks,

Imagine the smell of pure crystal heated at 540°. This man is a genius.
Definitely richer, more stable and masculine than the EDP. They become more similar in the end notes, I found the EDP too feminine for me. Longevity is about the same for both. This will cause heads to turn wherever you go.

  12. :

    3 out of 5

This beautiful gem cannot be reviewed in terms of top, heart and base notes, but rather as the interplay between three unique accords, each lending distinct and visceral characteristic. The “breeze” accord, jasmine and saffron, sits sheer and delicately spiced on the skin, leading way for cedar-driven blend of woods that make up the robust and crackling “heat” accord. Finally, a “mineral” accord of ambegris seems simultaneously warm and cool, delivering deceptively straightforward depth to mimic the sophistication of Baccarat Crystal itself. A fragrance that was only meant to belong to 250 of the world’s wealthiest collectors is now available to everyone. I am so glad that I could add this beautiful scent to my collection. I have both eau de parfum and the extrait de parfum and I have tested them both at the same time and I have to say everytime the extrait de parfum wins in terms of projection, longevity and actual smell. This is a power house and that ambergris is out of this world and makes this fragrance more masculine than the eau de parfum. A gem in a beautiful bottle. A must have!
Update: Do not over spray this because you will choke! Max sprays 3! This is also another Atomic bomb from Maison Francis Kurkdjian.
    – One Spray on my arm lasted 30 hours!

Signed by Francis Kurkdjian himself, this ruby and gold bottle is undoubtedly the absolute crown-jewel of my carefully curated collection. I will cherish it forever!
It was a huge honor to meet the man himself, and even though I already own the EDP, I wanted the extrait as well because the DNA of this masterwork is honestly the ultimate perfume I have experienced thus far. The extrait is slightly different with a more pronounced saffron in the opening and mid-stage of the perfume, along with the newly added almond element which makes it a bit more rich and dense. I will wear the EDP more casually and reserve the extrait for special people/occasions. This is truly a legendary creation from a legendary Master Perfumer!

  14. :

    4 out of 5

This is almost identical to the EDP to my nose. I get no almond, ambergris, or saffron. Both the EDP and extrait are blood orange dripping with nectar. No woodsy notes either, for that matter.
That being said, this perfume in all its forms is PURE HEAVEN. A lady followed me through a store, tracking me down at the register to ask me what I was wearing. I tried my best to pronounce it!
It’s somehow a dignified sweetness, smelling expensive and experienced. Both men and women can wear it, but not just any man. Only if you’re already comfortable with sweet or ambery scents. For the price, go for the EDP, which has magnificent performance.

    Where’s the orange note?
There’s definitely a strong, sour orange-like note in the opening.

This takes the most beautiful things in the eau de parfum version and amps them up.
For ambergris lovers, this is the best fragrance in the world.

  18. :

    4 out of 5

Enjoyable. Sweeter, stronger, and longer lasting than the edp.
Also, @rvadati straight up plagiarized the copy from Lucky Scent for this perfume, what’s up with that?! It certainly doesn’t add anything to the experience of reading about this perfume.

  19. :

i love the bitter almond here versus the fir resin in the edp version…totally transforms the whole fragrance

    Scent – herbal candy musk.
Season/Time of Day – I prefer to use this one in the colder months, day or night.
    Projection – I did get noticed, I didn’t get a compliment.
    Longevity – I get 24hrs consistently.

To each their own, but this is far superior in my humble opinion. The original was outstanding, but not very strong on me. The extrait version lasts longer, smells stronger and radiates 3 times as much on my skin. So glad I spent the extra money on this. Worth the extra coin if you have it.

  24. :

    3 out of 5

It’s nice but if i have to choose i would choose (and have chosen by the way) an edp version because the extrait lacks the character that eau de parfum has – that masculine or medicine vibe/note that drives me crazy. Also after wearing both for some time i didn’t noticed that extrait would have a better sillage or staying power though it’s an extrait concentration…but instead it’s more sugary sweet

  25. :

    5 out of 5

I gave in to the hype and got a decant of this. It’s a no-no for me, since I find it very feminine. Many people talk about the power of this extrait, but to me is not even as strong as Amouage EDP concentration, still high quality, but not the scent I want on me. Gave the decant to a girlfriend of mine, and she loved it! I’ve tried other MFK creations, but all of them have been a disappointment, so I will stay away from this house from now on.

  26. :

Edit: sadly my husband doesn’t like this on me. I’m heartbroken but I guess my bank account will be happy.
Oh no, sampling a decant and I was really hoping I would not like this but I LOVE IT! The only thing preventing me from buying a bottle right now is that we are heading into warmer weather and I think of this ambergris forward beauty as more of a cold weather scent.
For some reason I’m picking up rose, but nonetheless this is a stunning, sweet, long lasting, unusual scent. I’ll need to sample the perfume version before I pull the trigger but I love love love it.

Love at firs sniff! Bought it Right then and there! Very long lasting. Sweet, sensual
    Sexy
    Keep smelling myself
Love it so much. And when I first smelled it I didn’t know anything about mfk and the price range… so I said “yes” to it before I saw the price tag that came with it. Still love it though
    It will last forever

The most complimented fragrance in my collection, no questions. If you need attention but don’t know how to
get it, this is the answer. I have both versions (EDP and Extrait) but the latter is the one which will make you feel like a movie star. Never had such experience with any other perfume. Do you a favor and simply try it on your skin and clothes. Then go around for a short walk and check the reactions of your co-workers or even complete strangers.
Literally, most of them will turn his heads and some will ask you what the hell are you wearing today 🙂

I sprayed approx. 4 times on my wrist being careful to not get any over spray on my coat. It lasted all day until the next day. I put on my coat 3 days later can smell on my wrist now, and that is just from the transfer. It is incredibly potent but very smooth.

  30. :

    4 out of 5

thick as a brick, more dense and persistent of the EdP…burnt woods, some people will say burnt sugar, really masculine and sweet but also rough..a smash hit with ’em ladies!!!

  31. :

    4 out of 5

Lots of ambergris. Lots. Many ambergris. In fact is that why it’s so expensive; is there actual whale in there?! It’s lovely after about 8 hours; and since it lasted over 12 — until I literally washed it off — that’s not too bad. However, the first 7 hours were a strange salty green rose ambergris. It might work better on a dude, but overallI did not enjoy this. (Which is good, because the price is frankly outrageous) I spend way more money than I should on perfume; but this one really feels like it was designed to say “I spent $400 on perfume” over anything else. (I’ve also tried the EDP, it was similar with less ambergris and wood; and a lot less longevity. IMO the EDP is more classically “feminine”)

    Bello & vivace.

This is certainly thicker than the EDP.
Of course it has a similar aroma to the EDP
but Extrait has more syrupy sweetness and masculine woody notes in the end.

I have a bottle of the extrait….smells like the best candy in the world!!!
Then the animalic musk adds more masculinity on my skin….lovely!

I wore this for the first time to work today for a bit of a pick-me-up. I was disappointed at first sniff as it seemed to just disappear… until 20 minutes later… BAM!
    It was love!!!
I then walked through to my office and turned every head I walked past. One of the directors came into my office to ask me what it was. I told him and showed him online and he asked me to send him a link to it.
I sprayed my wrists and neck at 7am this morning and I can still smell it and still getting compliments on it now at 6:30pm. Four spritzes.
    Worth the price tag.
    **Edit Five weeks later**
Yep. Holy grail of scents. This will go down in history as my favorite perfume ever. I have taken to writing its details down on small slips of paper to carry around with me because I’m asked at least four times daily what I’m wearing. I tell them and then hand them one of the pieces of paper with the details on.

This is just like the original, but here you have the green Almond note, which is the one note that’s easy to pick out.
In the original the notes are well blended and as a whole very obscure. Yet they are both bright and pleasant, very sheer and refined. White musc, safron and a bit of an amber/ piney note is what I vaguely pick out, the almond is more of a top note that fades away after an hour, then feels more like the original throughout.
The Extrait has slightly better sillage perhaps, and longevity is better.

  38. :

I guess many of us here are wondering about the difference with the eau de parfum version, apart from the price tag.
The only (and very very small) difference that I can tell – is in the nuance of the dry down base note of each. The extrait will eventually smell less sweet but woody; unlike the eau de parfum, which will continuously radiate mostly resin and jasmine notes, with a tiny pinch of bitterness.
The extrait is as long lasting as the eau de parfum.

  39. :

What an incredible creation! This is the most expensive parfum in my entire collection. It takes the center spot on the shelf, still in its beautiful box just like the others to protect from light. I want to be able to express my love for this extraordinary scent but words fail me. I will say that the almond and saffron effect are superb together. The ambergris gathers the whole composition and ties a pretty bow around it. As the bow slowly unties throughout the day, the magic unfolds in increments bringing a smile to my face. Beautiful.

‘Baccarat Rouge 540 Extrait de parfum’ follows the same structural architecture of its predecessor, with its three distinct scent accords. First a shimmering radiance is displayed with subtle hints of a hesperidic blood orange opening, combing with the “breeze” accord of Egyptian grandiflorum jasmine and saffron. The effect is sheer and gossamer-like. The addition of the dry saffron note here is a master stroke as it perfectly counterbalances the overarching sweetness present throughout the life of the fragrance. The “heat” accord bursts forth with Moroccan bitter almond and cedar wood, capturing the central warmth inherent within the composition. The marzipan-like scent of bitter almond blends beautifully with the architecture of the fragrance, imbuing hints of luscious cherry and apricot to the background whilst never overpowering the other notes. The final “mineral” accord settles in at the base, utilizing ambergris and “musky woods”. Ambergris (a fragrance chameleon of sorts) carries with it salty, marine, and oily facets which provide a radiant foundation for the aforementioned notes to settle. Here the ambergris is more sweet than salty, and subtly conjures up the honeyed warmth of amber.
From start to finish, ‘Baccarat Rouge 540 Extrait de parfum’ is a masterful work to behold. It stays very true to the original yet feels more tightly constructed and more vivid in its imagery. The best analogy I can refer to is that of an unfocused view through a photography lens being quickly snapped into crystal clear focus. The once blurred edges of the original ‘Baccarat Rouge 540’ have now been sharpened into precise clarity via this newly enhanced rendering of “extrait de parfum”. As discussed earlier in the review, both sillage and projection are lessened in this version; a paradox which will invariably drive many to scratch their heads in frustration. Longevity, on the other hand, is certainly amplified in large part due to the higher amount of fragrant oils present. I personally prefer this new incarnation of the beloved ‘Baccarat Rouge 540’ fragrance, as it feels closest in memory to the original scent I experienced all those years ago in the Baccarat store on Madison Avenue. The intensity of summer’s heat, the honking of car horns, and the claustrophobia of crowded sidewalks all melted away as I took my first whiff of Mr. Kurkdjian’s most transportive of creations; I was hooked.

I already own a 70ml bottle of Baccarat Rouge EDP, plus travel-size refills. It has quickly become one of my most beloved fragrances; it really agrees with my chemistry, the performance is out of this world, and I receive tons of compliments whenever I wear it. So, three cheers for the EDP!
Now, I was curious to test the new Extrait version, just to compare it to the original and to see whether it’s really worth the premium price. And the answer is… no. The extrait is very similar to the EDP; sure, there are some nuances that make it slightly different (e.g. the saffron is slightly toned down to make way for a bit more prominent almond and jasmine); but these are really nuances, and the overall olfactory experience is more-or-less the same. The longevity is excellent (+10hr), but the sillage is actually a bit softer than the EDP. All in all, if money is no object, then this is certainly a good purchase, not least because the bottle is very beautiful and it would make a wonderful gift for a special someone. However, if you are not so keen on splashing 300eur for 70ml, then buy the EDP (which ain’t cheap either). What I’m actually worried about is that LVMH, the new owners of the MFK brand, might now decide to mess up the EDP version in order to persuade customers to purchase the Extrait. Now, that would be really nasty (but entirely unsurprising).

  42. :

    3 out of 5

I will start my review by making clear that I’ve only just received my 5ml sample, so I may have to edit this initial response, but this is what I experienced. Keep in mind I LOVE the EDP and get ridiculous longevity/projection from it
First spray, I definitely pick up on the almond which I usually hate in fragrances BUT this one is sweet despite being named bitter almond) and I can feel the €295.00 leaving my account…a minute later umm Extrait or cologne? I feel the money making its way right back into the account.
Like I said, this is based off 1 spray and I had been testing fragrances earlier today so my nose could be off BUT I can still smell the Mont Blanc Emblem Absolu (unfortunately) that I tested on my other arm 3 hours ago, it’s very noticeable, whereas I have my nose pressed right onto my other arm and smell nothing from this one.
I’m both sad and happy at the same time, sad because it started off very promising, I love the look of the bottle and was really looking forward to adding this one to my collection. Happy because I just saved $450 on a 70ml bottle
I’ll try it again later tonight after I have another shower, I have 6ml to get through so maybe my opinion will change
**edit 1 – it’s been 30 minutes, I’ve just come out of the shower and if I press my nose up to my arm I can smell it, it smells 99% like the original by this stage. I’m thinking the money will be better spent on a 200ml of the original
It’s not often a release from MFK leaves me disappointed but this has done that, not because of the scent, just the lack of strength for what is supposed to be a step up not down
**edit 2 – OK it’s been 7 hours and I can still smell it on my arm, so longevity was never the issue, it’s just projection as it’s mostly a skin scent unless you overspray
I’ll wear it out tomorrow to see how it goes

I love Baccarat Rouge, and I have been umming and erring about getting a full bottle of it for the last year, however, it’s far too weak on my skin. It does last an age on clothes though! I was very excited to learn that an “intense” extrait de parfum was being released, so I purchased a sample of each from the MFK website. I find the extrait slightly nuttier and tart on the dry down. The eau de parfum has a very ferocious/resinous opening because of the presence of the amberwood, which gives the fragrance a burnt-sugar/crushed ruby vibe. Its absence here is noticeable to me and while it still has that resinous glow about it, it’s not as powerful as the eau de parfum in my opinion. It has been 45 minutes and I can still smell the extrait without having to dig into the depths of my wrist to find it, whereas with the eau de parfum, it’s barely there. So yes, the longevity of the extrait on myself is better, however, it lacks the ferocity that made me fall in love with the eau de parfum. The extrait has been blended to perfection without a shadow of a doubt and its projection is smooth and consistent. Overall, they are both beautiful fragrances but I prefer the orginial.
ETA: After an hour and a half, the tartness has faded away and I am left with the resinous opening that accompanies the eau de parfum AND I can still smell it. Oooh, I may just have to retract the above statement. The extrait is on point now!!!
ETA: Still going strong 12 hours after application!

I have both….Extrait being the 3ml Sample. I agree with everyone who says WHY. The bottle is BEAUTIFUL I must say. The only difference TOTALLY is: No alcohol when you spray the extrait. Everything else is the same….longevity, projection, and sillage……using a top of the hand spritz of each. $425 uhhhhh NO!!!

Can’t wait for my sample to arrive, chose it as my free sample with my bottle of Grand Soir
I love the existing 540 so can’t imagine I won’t love this. On clothes the EDP lasts for weeks so I figure this could go a month 😀
Bottle looks amazing too, it shouldn’t matter as my bottles remain in their boxes and unseen by others but it’s a really nice looking bottle and I want it. We really love thoughtless spending in this ‘hobby’…ah who cares I’m single, a girlfriend, wife or kids would cost me much more than this haha

I managed to get a sample from my Neiman Marcus connect. It’s Baccarat 540 alright. The same panty dropping/high brow quality is in tact. I feel like this one wears close to the skin like apparel and not as aromatic as the previous Baccarat 540. For those who thought they couldn’t smell the last one will definitely gripe at the strength of this new offering especially given the Extrait de parfum title. This time around, the fluorescence is given to the amber and woody notes. The type of wood isn’t specified but the “brown” scent I’m detecting has an oak nuance. In typical Baccarat 540 fashion, the fragrance is akin to a single poof. Personally, I prefer the former over the latter. This is the same fragrance in a lot of ways. $420 dollars? The consumer is absolutely footing the bill for the addition of ambergis.
