Description

Aqua Universalis – inspired by cleanliness, a scent composed of bergamot, Sicilian lemon, lily of the valley, sweet orange and blond musky wood. It arrives as 75 ml and 200 ml EDT, as well as 1 liter laundry detergent and softener with the same notes.

The collection also features a “photophore” candle which does not arrive in a traditional glass package, but makes a hole inside its body while it burns and it seems like it is burning in its very heart. They wanted to make a little twist in the design and presentation of products and awaken their customers’ interest and so invented a small leather bracelet, Tour Atour, impregnated with scent. A box of 20 fragrant incense papers is also part of the collection.
Perfumer is Francis Kurkdjian. Aqua Universalis was launched in 2009.

Aaaaand, another pleasant but unremarkable classic citrusy/aromatic cologne sold at premium price point. As with the ELdO Cologne, this is a great scent which in no way justifies its price (unless you don’t need to justify a price of anything).

Aqua Universals is now my current love from daytime gym time until bed time. Before I met Aqua Universalis, Aerin Waterlily Sun was my No.1 daytime scent. I love waterlily sun. It is airy, light, fresh and good quality. But I always feel that it is missing something. Aqua Universalis is a completed also better longevity. If you love the sunny air dry laundry feeling, you will never go wrong with Aqua Universalis.

I seem to go back to this every summer when it’s too gross out to contemplate anything too complex. It’s the epitome of high-end clean and perfect for hot weather. Youthful, fresh, and sexy in a just-showered way.

As many suggested, this is a great fragrance however…a great fragrance for the ladies. I am not sure if this is woodsy or musky enough for a man to wear. Once sprayed, I gave this a little time to settle and although nice, the clean, citrusy, laundry brightness gives this a very linen type freshness that I think, better suits a woman.
Unfortunately, I will have to pass; I enjoyed my moment, however, will let others bask in its glory!

This is better imo than forte version. The auf is too much flowers while this is more balanced.

Ok so i will be probably only one who don’t like it
Citrus and lili of the valley and jasmin even not listed
It tooks me 4 hours to remember which perfumes it reminds me
    Aerin Lauder Ikat Jasmine
After searching in my mind what it smells like (my guessed were hermes or d&g light blue)
    but it is AL
It has something that bother me… both of them …
It can be lili as this I know botter me in every perfume

This is my signature scent for various reasons. It is the one that introduced me a couple years ago to the “niche/higher end” world of perfumes.
First time I smelled it I immediately loved it because it was so clean and different…and yet it reminded me of something (might be a memory of some sort) I couldn’t stop thinking about it I had to have it. For me this one changes on every occasion, sometimes it’s more floral sometimes it’s more citrus.
Perfect for the summer weather year-round we get here where I live.
I can use it day or night, any occasion, always seems to put me in a good mood.
My most complimented perfume I have.., would consider it a safe blind buy. Go out and try it if you haven’t yet.
Edit 1: my roommate says he can smell it from downstairs

As Australia swelters through yet another scorching Summer, I have found myself reaching for light, citrusy scents as a means of coping with the heat. Aqua Universalis was one of the first fragrances from Maison Francis Kurkdjian that called to me. Available in a generous 200ml bottle, this is one fragrance I would happily spray with reckless abandon during the Summer months.
Aqua Universalis is slightly similar to Tom Ford’s Neroli Portofino, however, the drydown is muskier and cleaner. Orange and bergamot are the most dominant notes to my nose, followed by orange blossom and white musk. It’s an uncomplicated scent; easy to understand and wear.
In my opinion, the less complex, the better when it comes to Summer fragrances. It meets the criteria for keeping one smelling fresh and crisp despite the unrelenting weather raging on outdoors. Perhaps the only downside to this fragrance is its relatively high price tag. However, with that being said, it could be well worth it if intending to make this a signature fragrance.
I do enjoy wearing Aqua Universalis, especially as it reminds me of chilled water with a spritz of lemon, (super refreshing on a hot day). As where I live has only hot a few months of the year, I honestly wouldn’t purchase Aqua Universalis as I don’t think I’d use up a full bottle during my lifetime, but if I ever moved to a warmer climate I would definitely re-consider buying it.

The most complimented fragrance of my life. Ever. Hands down. It is truly a masterpiece and exactly as it is marketed/described. Somewhere in between a shower and fresh linens, and always making people think “is he wearing something or does he just smell that good naturally?”. It is the citrus floral by which I judge all others. But there are two reasons that stop me from repurchasing. It doesn’t last, and the price. I’ve had the small bottle, the BIG bottle, and purchases the travel sets twice, and enjoyed every second of it, but looking back this is sooo overpriced. And I only get to enjoy it for about two hours. Maybe if I was loaded I would continue using this. Such a shame that the most beautiful fragrance in the world is so fleeting. Truly breaks my heart.

The opening was promising and something I’ve been hunting for: beautiful citrus notes. I also picked up a little bit of the lily, but none of the woods. I’ve been looking for the signature summer scent, but after an hour all I got was a very faint musky laundry detergent scent…. emphasis on very faint. My skin just ate it up. Oh well, my search continues!

“I tried Aqua Universalis Forte today the opening was really pleasant reminded me of something my mom would spritz my clothes with as a kid for special occasions which is great cause I’m a sucker for anything nostalgic. The mid however was a big let down outta of nowhere came this harsh grassy note that smelled like hair removal cream really nasty to my nose. After about 4 hours that awful note dissipates. The base smelled like expensive shampoo simple and clean. Both longevity and projection were excellent. It was nice to get that nostalgic feeling even if it was just for a short period of time.”
Above is my review of Aqua Universalis Forte and everything that I didn’t like about it thankfully wasn’t there in Aqua Universalis. Aqua Universalis was the fragrance I wanted Forte to be no sharp grassiness no hair removal cream just that perfect memory trapped in a bottle. The projection in Aqua Universalis is actually better than Forte but the longevity is about 6-7 hours where Forte gives me about 10 hours. I would take Aqua Universalis over Aqua Universalis Forte anytime any day this goes to show you that just because a fragrance is more concentrated doesn’t necessarily make it better try things for yourself then decide; don’t judge a fragrance by its concentration hehe.

Review based on a sample received. A clean watery crowd pleaser with the right notes of lemon, lily of the valley, begamont, wood and musk. Nothing really spectacular to earn all this praise ( smells like laundry detergent as many have noted) but has a safe inoffensive sweetness that may resonate with undemanding connoisseurs and those looking for moderately noticeable scents. All in all a safe buy if you want something nice and nondescript. I will pass.

    ————————————–
This perfume is made for spring (and summer). I have a pure essence of lily of the valley, and when I smell it, it is similar over 90% with Aqua Universalis.
This perfume is a rare perfumes that is used lily of the valley in dominant notes…
Most of the men prefer bitter perfumes vs sweet ones. I said that if you (man) wear this perfume only for your enjoyment, test it before buying due to white floral and sweet notes. and if you (man) wear Aqua Universalis only for attracting women, blind buy this one!!

Aqua Universalis is like your lover’s plain white t-shirt hung out to dry on the line, washed and worn a thousand times and held closely to the heart.
Airy and crisp like the ubiquitous “clean linen” note but with the added depth of musk and sun-bleached wood. According to my nose, that translates as skin. Dry skin in the sun many hours after bathing. Not sweaty, just briney and “lived in”. Like your favorite hoodie or that old pillow that’s falling to pieces but you just can’t seem to throw it away. If it weren’t for the intimate impression of one’s birthday suit, UA might be a fragrance I would quickly overlook. It is, however, ultimately wearable and totally joyful.
First impression is lemon oil and white flowers. Then watery notes, more citrus, and finally musk and wood. The latter two linger and sit close to the skin. Low to medium sillage and longevity. This is not a powerhouse fragrance but something to wear liberally to the office, church, or anywhere casual.

Lily of the valley plus lemony musk. I agree with everyone that this is a very lovely clean scent. This borders on cologne territory on my skin, from first spray to drydown is an hour at a real stretch (yes, I know, I know, cologne lasts far less time than that. Just saying, this is expensive stuff to have it blow away so quickly).
The LOTV is very beautifully executed, I do loves me some clean green lily! But ultimately this one is a little “meh” for me, possibly the sharp laundry powder musk aspect which turns me off. With all due respect, of course – the detergent/soap fragrance industry make some insanely good (and underrated!) scents and this is a great version on the theme, I just don’t really want to smell like this particular one, will keep the lily however.

I have gotten a used larg bottle, and have become more aquainted with it.
I love the lilly of the valley opening, it is the dominant floral for the first 15 minutes, then it blends equally with the neroli.
Also the citrus changes, it’s mostly lemon in the opening, then I get more of the orange blending in later.
So it has that basic cologne structure of Lemon, Neroli, Musc. As Francis Kurkdijian compositions are often things that are familiar and popular, with his own unique twist, and allways being of the highest quality and performance.
The unique twist to this cologne is the lilly of the valley making a floral accord with the neroli, the slight touch of orange and woodiness is nice and unique, reminding me of Hermes Terre de Hermes Fresh.

Along with Millesime Imperial, this is one of those fragrances that is so much more than the sum of its parts. You might look at the notes and think, ‘yeah, been there, smelt that’, but this smells like nothing else. AU masterfully blends citruses, light floral notes – mainly lily of the valley – along with some musk to add some backbone to the composition. Its both ethereal and tenacious, with great longevity; and like MI, it melds with your skin and gives the impression that you naturally smell this wonderful. It’s a minimalistic fragrance, that is reminiscent of a remastered classic record, with all the pops and crackles removed, leaving just the music. I love it.
N.B. I really think this differs greatly from the Forte version, which I actually disliked. The Forte had an added floral note (jasmine), which made it both a lot more feminine, and heavy. It was a dense fragrance, that lacked the transparency that makes AU so special. I don’t understand how many reviews touted the Forte as a summer fragrance, when personally, I think it would be too cloying for summer, whereas the regular AU is just perfect.

Acqua Universalis is the crisp pressed white dress shirt of your fragrance wardrobe. I think we all need one clean scent. This is the best of the genre, and even has an accompanying fabric softener to boost he clean quotient in your life. Fresh, clean and laundered right out of a shower fragrance.

This is a great spring/ summer fragrance! It is clean and fresh with citrus and musky accords. The musk in this scent is what keeps it grounded and makes it different from other citrus scents which tend to be heavy on the lemon. This is a unique cologne because it is blended so masterfully that it stands out. This is a must have in your collection, you will not be disappointed

Great review by thespark above, yes, this is tenacious, and it reminds me of Milisme Imperial in that way, though it’s more floral.
AU is masterful in how clean, and transparent it is. Some say it just smells like laundry soap. I very much appreciate a great ant-perfume as this. When you want something clean and beautiful, it’s hard to imagine anything as nice.
I have been looking for a fresh white floral fragrance, that is truly universal and not feminine, and that’s hard to find.
I am looking to buy Universalis.
I like lilly of the valley scent and it is very natural and clean in this fragrance along with the citrus, which is mostly a very realistic lemon, but with just a hint of orange that softens the lemon with a nice fruity tone. This will be a great warm weather frag.
I did purchase this, and it’s a favorite fresh fragrance. I like the simplicity of two clear distinct notes lemon and lilly of the valley. The quality is high, and those two natural essences are so enjoyable, God given, and don’t need much embellishing.
The orange blosom, musk, and woody nuances are a great addition also. The nice woody notes with the musk are what you get mostly in the drydown.
It has been a while since I finished my sample. At first I thought it was to simplistic and slightly leaning feminine. Now I have changed my mind. Some of the simple fresh fragrances by MFK have hidden subtle accords that can take a while to discover, like in Petit Matin…
I think the beauty is in the simplicity here. The lilly of the valley is not embellished to be more feminine, it stays natural. This is an unusual fresh fragrance that can be worn by a guy, who likes something fresh and floral, yet remains gender neutral and universal.
I remember when I found Dior Cologne, it was simple and immensely enjoyable, but it was too sweet looking to appeal to the young mass market. Universalis is similar to Dior Cologne with no sugar added, just all natural
    goodness.
PS: I am finding good deals on eBay, and buying back up bottles. This is a masterpiece of a fresh fragrance.
Francis Kurkdjian became famous as a young parfumer when he composed the darring ” Le Male” a masculine floral, where the flowers were covered over with cinomon and spices to try to be more masculine. Even the bottle was in the shape of a male body so no one would mistake it not being masculine.
This frag sparkles and pops with beutifull lilly of the valley and orange blosom, and lemons. This is a beautiful shimmering fragrance that is so natural and truly universal, no macho notes added, and no feminine softness added, just great!
    Rating: 9/10

There’s an ingenious conceit behind Aqua Universalis. Francis Kurkdjian has taken the famous ‘aha!’ moment of functional fragrances like laundry powder, and developed the key elements into a fully fledged fine fragrance.
But despite the niche pricing, there isn’t a hint of haute couture here – the accompanying line of laundry powders and fabric softener nod to the fragrance’s washroom roots. The result is a clash of high and low culture; clean cast as exquisite and exclusive, but also as a shared desire and experience. Aqua Universalis more than lives up to its name in the latter regard – it is a scent for all.
The opening is of beautifully fresh citrus, followed by one of the most exquisite lily of the valley accords I’ve smelled. The LOTV alone is worth the price of admission. It projects well for a couple of hours, before drying down into a musky skin scent. The LOTV recedes as the laundry accord takes over, and the overall composition starts to read more synthetic. Eventually, your skin will end up smelling like a well-laundered T-shirt.
Is Aqua Universalis an overpriced detergent in a fancy bottle? Probably. But you’d be hard-pressed to find a scent as knowingly critical of cleanliness, at the same time as exuding it. A masterstroke from a master.

  26. :

    4 out of 5

If I had to limit my entire wardrobe to only five scents, Aqua Universalis would be one of them. It’s THAT good. But it’s not for everyone. It’s not a “Hey, look at me!” kind of scent, so anyone looking for a projection beast that demands attention will be disappointed. Instead, this is the smell of someone who smells good. Really good. And clean.
    Aqua Universalis is squeaky clean.
    Citrus? Yes.
    Floral? Yes.
    Unisex? Yes, but…
…I can see how some might find this feminine while sampling it, but don’t let that scare you off. It’s different when worn. On skin, it becomes neither feminine nor masculine. Instead, it smells like a person who is clean and happy. Aqua Universalis is definitely a happy scent. In fact, it’s downright joyful.
    Aqua Universalis? Aqua Joyeux!
After the opening settles down, it wears close to the skin, but it lasts a long time and it clings to clothes in a really nice way. The musky base is clean yet playfully snuggly. Clean is sexy, and I dare say this scent is unexpectedly sexy. In the air, it smells nice. Up close on skin, it smells cozy. For me, that’s a fantastic combination.
    Very highly recommended.

    5 out of 5

Citrus opening is drop-dead gorgeous, and I love how the Lily of The Valley remains unisex, without the addition of heavy feminine florals (ex: Byredo / Inflorescence).
Longevity is surprisingly good, considering the poor reviews it’s received. Specifically, yes, the citrus blows off. That’s what citrus does. 🙂 But the LOTV and musk base are tenacious.
There’s something in the middle notes that comes across as ‘cardboard’, along with amplified pool-chlorine (which always exists in traces) on my skin. This may be unique to me (as a swimmer), or something’s up with the Needless Markup tester that I’ve been hitting.
As far as MFK citruses go, Aqua Vitae gets better mileage — and preferable for winter. Will re-try AU in the spring.

oh my i really really love this fragrance. Aqua Universalis reflects cleanliness very well without making it smelled like detergent. calming and uplifting at the same time. i got the bergamot and lemon, they blend and complement one another in a very smooth and elegant way.
I can imagine lying peacefully in a beach house in a calm morning, enjoying the softness of the sheet on my skin, while listening to the waves
    SUPER LOVE!

  29. :

    4 out of 5

Aqua Universalis (AU) is a floral scent with musky under tone. Citrus only supports the floral scent by making it more uplifting. Overall, the scent has a “clean sheet,” almost feminine vibe. Dries down to gentle soapy musk (with emphasis on soapy, not musk). Definitely unisex fragrance that suits male slightly better than female.
The quality of ingredients are excellent with very natural feel to the scent.
This might sound like travesty to some and I feel terrible for saying this but AU smells like much much gentler, high class version of Abercrombie & Fitch scent that they spray in their stores.
AU is a nice scent, and compared to other soapy scents (Prada Amber pour Homme, TM cologne, and even CD Bois d’Argent), it has more class, and character (due to citrus) but I cannot fully enjoy it due to the constant reminder of synthetic cheap teen spray that I get. And given the price, I will stick with TM cologne for casual wear, and CD Bois d’Argent for upscale comfort wear.
    Personal rating: 6/10

Beautifully soft, smooth and fresh aromatic with prominent notes of citruses and lily of the valley; totally inoffensive, neutral and unisex, but for me ever so slightly too sweet to enjoy comfortably; pleasant sillage and reasonable longevity 🙂

  32. :

    4 out of 5

Truly beautiful, fresh, clean, but not soapy; opens as an aromatic citrus, almost a cologne feel, unisex, but not masculine. The citrus is neither sweet nor sour. There is a note that is green and refreshing, but with enough sweetness from the orange zest and white florals to lift the fragrance. Segues from an aromatic citrus to a fresh floral, a little lily and rose, and a little touch of something that seems a soft white floral, similar to orange blossom or jasmine, but fleeting and soft. Almost perfect for professional settings, attending a conference, anywhere where you want to be unobtrusive and understated, but wear a fragrance that can be easily felt by others, and will last hours. Good longevity, at least eight hours, and good projection- up to two feet, but still soft.
The musk is a simple white musk with a little vanilla tinge. Pretty, but not sweet or predictable, very lively overall, invigorating. The drydown is soft, creamy, woody and musky, reminds me of sandalwood, but is clearly not sandalwood, but is similarly creamy.

This fragrance is pure class from the first moment you spray it on. Wonderful smell that makes you feel clean, relax and superior to those masses wearing generic garbage like the 1 million, invictus, eros, salvatore ferragamo AE, etc…It makes you clearly understand why you have spent a bit more of money…
    Scent: 9 if not 10 out 10
Longevity: 7 (around 5-7 hours each time)
Projection: 6 (it is just meant to be this way…would you imagine a psychiatrist screaming at all of his patients?— of course Not…the same analogy does not apply here)
    Sillage: 7 better than expected
Versatility:8 Spring, summer, early fall…highy unisex as well
    overall: 9 cause I just love it….
Spray on you cloths and it will last a bit longer…I usually wear 6-8 sprays..

nice light summer fragrance that isn’t really anything special and is more of a masculine cologne with citrus, hint of floral and hint of musk. No notes really stand out other than the citrus top.

  35. :

    5 out of 5

This is really good stuff. It reminds me of the AUF but without the powerful white floral note. I just wish this was a bit stronger. It isn’t really going to jump off your skin but people will be able to smell it even when you cannot. I usually get about 8 hours on skin with this. Projection is about 2 hours that I can smell but I have had people comment on it after 5 hours into the wearing. If you could only buy one summer fragrance I think this would be a good choice. It’s refreshing, light, and smells excellent. My only kick is that I wish it was more powerful. I have a 10ml decant of this and I also have a travel kit of AUF which I prefer due to its strength.

I do pride myself on my taste. I guess you can say I have ‘expensive’ taste and a part of me is embarrassed by it because my family picks on me more often than not about how expensive my taste really is.
But as I grow I realize that I do not need to apologize for the things that I enjoy in life. there is no handbook for this journey we are all on—and if we do find happiness somewhere—who’s to say that is wrong while others are right.
I find great joy and happiness in perfumery. This particular fragrance has surprised me in the amount of joy has given me . I would consider this fragrance extremely uplifting as the notes are pure and energizing yes soft and sweet and utterly intoxicating and that is a word I thought I would never use when describing a clean fragrance.
This has made me a citrus believer . Typically citrus fragrances are one of my least favorite aside from very powdery perfumes. I received this in the mail today with low expectations—typically I prefer fragrances that are indulgent very Jammy etcetera. I smelled this perfume and was instantly in love. And I believe when it comes down to it, it’s about quality and care and Artistry and expertise . I will love any perfume that is done right and has been created from an artist who may be masterful all of his work . a Picasso is beautiful no matter what it is because it’s a Picasso. I consider this a masterpiece. It’s a privilege to have in my collection.

I had a luckyscent sample that was forgotten about, that is until I saw Marc’s (robes08) youtube review on this a few weeks ago. So I decided to pull it out and finally see what its all about, and wow! this is an amazingly pure, bright, Fresh and sparkling citrus rounded off by a slight sweetness due to the lily of the valley. Considering I just had a baby girl that was a premie so shes still in the NICU. I thought this is the perfect scent to wear when I go see her. Very non offensive, in fact it has a sort of has a baby fresh feal to it. So not only do I absolutely love this scent, but it’s now associated with my baby daughter so it’s extra special . Needless to say I bought my 200ml bottle from Luckyscent.
Scent I give a 10/10… Projection is within arms length, better as you heat up… Silage is nice, leaves a decent trail… Longevity is better than expected for such a citrus fresh scent, about 6-9 hrs depending on the situation.

A fresh, sheer, and airy warm weather fragrance that lifts the spirits. Unlike most citrus EDTs, the touch of sweetness brought in by the addition of lily of the valley and mock orange makes this a slightly softer version of usual bracing colognes. Unisex, moderate silage and moderate longevity, 8 hours on me, befitting an EDT formula.
Notes: Bergamot, lemon, lily of valley, mock orange, woody notes, musk.

To me, it is the same experience as with A la rose also by Maison Francis Kurkdjian.
I tried it and while I cannot say that the idea is groundbreaking but the execution is flawless. The notes blend together creating a true scent experience instead just smelling nice/ok. I’m ready to pay more for it. Either my nose is more sophisticated or I became a perfume snob, I don’t care I just love this lightweight, uplifting citrusy breeze of a scent.
It is similar in vein to La Chasse aux papillons by L’Artisan. I recommend it to be used in warmer weather.

The most clean, laundry-fresh (in the best way possible) scent. I typically stay far away from fresh scents. Give me heavy ouds with animalic undertones all day, everyday, but this was a stretch for me to try to find a “fresh” scent that I could enjoy. Though the notes listed would make you think bathroom cleaning supplies, the scent is really fluffy and light, clean and non-offensive. Perfectly balanced unisex and lovely. It’s exactly the kind of scent you’d imagine you could wear on a date, to the office, running errands, or day to day. It’s very versatile. Lasts about 5 hours and smells more mature than I expected. Great quality and I love it.

A very clean, fresh scent! Very light and long lasting. To me, it seems very linear though. The scent does not develop much from the beginning to end. Not necessarily a bad thing – great choice for the day you want to “rest” your nose a bit.

Since I’ve taken a job a mere 15 minutes away from a mall with a Neiman Marcus Department Store, I often will go in after work to check out the latest Jo Malone offerings, or chat with the Sales Associates about different fragrance houses. It is always so exciting to see such a glorious array of the market’s finest fragrances in one store, having never really been inside a Neiman Marcus more than 2-3 times in my life. This department store happens to sell Francis Kurkdjian fragrances. I knew Francis was a nose because I am a fragrantica member, but until I strolled into the store that day, I had no idea he had his own line. My SA was kind enough to let my take home samples of Acqua Universalis, Amyris Femme and Feminin Pluriel.
My favorite was the Acqua. I don’t care what anyone says about this; how it has been done before, how you can get a dupe for cheap. Personally, I have never smelled anything so exquistely fresh and beautiful in my life! This fragrance has superior construction and quality ingredients and its notes lift and sing off my skin. It has longevity and sillage in the most sophisticated way. It is like breathing in the freshest lemonade and fresh cut grass and lily of the valley all at once. And suddenly it’s all I need in that moment and I just focus on the moment. And that’s the beauty of perfume, when it can directly let you appreciate and desire the very moment you’re in, the moment in which your nose is encapsulated with the aroma of beauty.
Having said all this, I am still trying to justify buying a full bottle, but I know that I could save up for this and then it would be a little better. The Tom Ford Cafe Rose was the most expensive fragrance I’ve ever bought and that was for my 30th birthday.

reviewing this blindly (without knowing the individual components)…
there’s a dominant citrus note which is sweet and dainty. it’s sweet enough for me to say it’s orange or mandarin (not lemon!), along side something quite white floral, maybe tuberose? maybe jasmine? i’m not that good with my white florals, so it’s probably neither of these…
a lot of MFK’s work tends to fall in the same basket in that you could be forgiven for mistaking one for another. this one right here smells like 2 or 3 other MFK offerings and in saying that it comes across ‘familiar’.
this is more on the side of feminine, but in saying it a bloke could pull it off, but not as well as a woman could.
all in all, totally NOT for me, however it is amazingly potent, long lasting and of high quality. most certainly worth a try…
