Wait a minute. This is supposed to smell herby and green? I got a straight up flower. An unknown flower, but a soliflore. I don’t know why I didn’t think Angelique = Angelica, the herbal perfume note.

Very elegant and simple in a good way.
A sharp, spicy floral opening of angelica (in the realm of some Hermes Jardins, but nicer) leads to a clean, classy and classic juniper + clean cedar + tiny hint of citrus + beautiful musk combination. Scent doesn’t change as much as performance, which decreases quite rapidly.
    It’s OK.

It’s quite subtle. A faintly herbal scent. If you ever had any Asian traditional medicine, dilute it with 100X water, add a slightest hint of ambergris note, you’ll get this one.

Fantastic scent with a very fitting name. The combination of angelica and cedar is often the starting point of a classy cologne and this one is my go to fragrance on warm rainy days but the performance is really subpar and actually unacceptable for this price tag but i still paid the price just in order to own this beautiful scent.

A classy waft of spice and citrus ; a brief wisp of lovely, discreet, elegant cedar … and then it’s gone. Ok I was dabbing from a small sample – but this lasted less than an hour. I can remember liking it some, but not enough to fall in love with even if it hung around a little longer. Your mileage may vary; it’s definitely subtle and nuanced and tasteful while it lasts.

I see that for everyone, the most frustrating quality of the scent was longevity. I remember trying this fragrance on in the middle of October at Barneys. Ironically, it was 4:00pm and the day was about to turn to a torrential pour down of rain. I walked across from The Metropolitan Club to get to the subway and I felt light rain drops falling on my face. The humidity began to cool down. The breeze waltz in and I could feel it picking up the juniper and balmy cedar on my skin. It was velvety and pulpy. It was the first time I could describe a texture from a fragrance. It lingered with me for a while. By the time I got to Central Park South and Broadway, the rain began to pick up, but I still felt that scent. Maybe bc the scent was so engraved with me. I now associate Angéliques with a rainy day in New York in October.
When I tried this scent years ago, it stayed on my skin for a very long time. Perhaps the formula has changed more synthetically today, but I also learned that sometimes you have to explore what parts of your skin hold fragrance longer. Everyone’s body chemistry is different, and we tend to generically spray on our necks and wrists. I learned with this one particular, Angéliques held up very well on my forearms, hands, and back of neck. This means if you’re going to spray on your shoulders or anywhere under your clothes, this will disappear very quickly. Wear light clothes with this. It’s almost like spraying on delicate bracelets on. I believe this is how most Jean-Claude Ellena fragrances are; a fleeting moment. Though I did find a trick to keep it lasting longer which I’m sure to some, is a big NO: I applied vaseline on the areas that I was going to spray the fragrance (I know, very amateur–I am not an perfume expert here). Also, if your body hair any wear, that is normally the best place to spray very light fragrances like this one; the forearm, the chest, where your beard meets with your jaw. This sticks longer than on skin–this fragrance in particular is musk after all, musk fragrances cling on hair.
I can see the comparisons of Voyage d’Hermès, but I actually found a similarity to Un Jardin En Mediterranée with this one. There was a very light damp fig drying up from the rain in this elixir. There is almost a metallic quality to this fragrance that I can’t decipher. Like a cool surface or brushed aluminum. The juniper is very pleasant and inviting. The angelicas are very supple and crisp. This is an indoor fragrance with open french windows, grey skies, and your lover looking at you in aspiration as you tell him, smiling “Alright get outta here! I’ll see you at 8”

To this very day I still have no regrets paying for this fragrance when i first smelled it. If anything this absolutely addicting fragrance, created by the genius, Jean Claude-Ellena, was the gateway drug for me to dive into the mysterious world of niche perfumery. I just gives me the feeling of a crisp clean white dress shirt in the forest. You really smell the love and care that it took to craft this fragrance. Even the name like the juice itself is a piece of French poetry, “Angelica in the Rain”.
Performance however still leaves me wanting. The fragrance last for possibly 4-6hrs on the skin and the sillage makes you feel as though its possible this fragrance is really meant just for the person who would purchase such a unique niche perfume. All around i have no regrets; but for those reading, i dont recommend it for buying unless, like me, you just cant live with out it.

I love the peppery rain that this evokes. I just wish it hung around a little longer. Such a fleeting moment of beauty, but I just love this on a wet spring day.

Unfortunately goes straight-to-Cumin on my skin, like Bigarade, The Different Company De Bachmakov, and Terre D’Hermes. Strange… since the Jardin series have a gorgeous dry down. There’s some common thread in the first 3 that somehow doesn’t work with my chemistry.

  10. :

    5 out of 5

Very light musk that plays so close to the skin it might as well be a natural perfume, but it’s not a musk I enjoy. It smells like a a guy at the mall, comb marks in his hair gel, very scrubbed and trim and energetic but almost totally sexless and unmemorable.

As houstcs puts it, surprisingly weak.
I love this scent and thought of getting it but given the price I decided to give it a few proper wearings before. I was really sad to hear the same answer from every single friend I asked about it “where is it? I cannot smell anything!!”. I then chose marvelous Geranium pour monsieur instead.
It is a real pity for the amazing freshness and green edge of this the 10 seconds it lasts are truly a standout. For those who say this smells like Voyage I think it is not a correct statement unless you mix that one with Bois d’orage… then we are talking. It is definitely edgier than Voyage.
In times of so many “requested by no one” reformulations, a bit more of longevity on this one would be greatly appreciated, I’m truly looking forward to it.

I get the comparison to Voyage D’Hermes, but it is a little more green and less gin and tonic to me. Actually surprisingly weak though. I barely ever spray more than 1 spray and I had to use 4 just to smell it past the top notes.

This smells like a gin and tonic, and not much else. It’s nice but it faded very quickly on the blotter compared to the other Malle perfumes I tried.

A lighter version of voyage d’hermes. Nothing remarkable and very weak.

  19. :

Opens with a blast of juniper and angelica, quickly dries down into a musk with no sillage at all. Nothing special but very fresh in the opening. If it only would stay that way.
Very close to the skin and almost unrecognisable.
If you want it to last you need to reapply two or three times within a day.
    Not full bottle worthy IMHO.

Probably leans a bit too masculine for me, but it’s a lovely scent. Woody, earthy and spicy.
It’s not listed, but I’m almost positive there’s bergamot in here. Or some citrus. It opens on me with a blast of that and pink pepper. It’s a very sunny smell and it mingles nicely with the juniper.
Soon, the woods kick in and it becomes an invigorating walk in the woods. I’m not overly familiar with angelica, but I’m assuming it’s what offers the herbal quality to this.
There’s a body odour sort of whiff towards the end which borders on unpleasant but never quite gets there.
This reminds me a lot of Blu Mediterraneo by Acqua Di Parma.
The bad news is that the longevity is poor. I’ve had this problem with most Frederic Malle perfumes. I only get about 3 hours out of this.

  21. :

Soft, warm and musky drydown with slight body odor scent due to the spice and pepper (but not unpleasant). Reminds me of Japanese hot springs. Calming and quite interesting.

My ex used to have this one, absoulutely amazing, we were going out me wearing french lover and him wearing this one, oerfect combination, as the ingredients are very similar. Can aporeciate it a lot, but it is not my kind of fragrance.
Longevity is quite short but it doesn’t suprise me as the smell is bery soft and sattle.

Love this. On first spritz, it’s gin (tonic please)! Juniper berries! Next comes pink peppercorns, interesting & wow! Then woody, musky, powdery and something something. Multi-layered, multi-faceted, a chameleon. Bitter, cool and fresh all at once.

  24. :

    5 out of 5

It smells like fresh Angelica which is a herbal, clean and rich scent. Soon it dries down to wood, probably cedar. The fragrance has a wonderful smell which I really like. The problem is longetivity which is very short, the Angelica part lasts some minutes and the cedar part a couple of hours maximum on my skin. What a pity.

  25. :

What a very lovely scent. I just wish it lasted longer. I think this is the only scent of Malle’s that is not an EDP, which is why it does not last that long 🙁
I have this scent and I wear it from time to time, but I get disappointed as wish it would have silage and longevity. One should not have to snuggle up to me to really know I have it on.
Other than that, the fragrance is clean and fresh – like you just came out of the shower in a forest. Very, very nice.

  26. :

Like being in the place where a ten ton coriander loaded truck crashed into a pepper storehouse, under a showering rain. The first hour or so, is like being on the spot when it happens. The rest (which is not much) is like visiting the place three months later. I love both pepper and coriander, but I think that the price asked for a fleeting whiff of them is way too high. On the other hand, it has one of the most beautiful and melodious names ever. After all, how many perfumes out there allow you to answer with what could be a lyrical poem’s title, when asked what perfume are you wearing?

  27. :

    5 out of 5

This fragrance is a chameleon for me. Sometimes I feel – it smells like a fresh forest aroma after the rain and I get very exited about it. Other times it appears to me just plain and boring sweet-spicy, light-woody fragrance.
Can’t make up my mind, but I like it a lot. It is very easy and pleasant fragrance, doesn’t feel masculine on me at all.

  28. :

    3 out of 5

It could also be a pleasant scent, the aroma of angelica and pepper is crisp and pleasant but it is light, very light, too light. It is not worth spending money on a scent that fades after just half an hour.

  29. :

    3 out of 5

This is a beautiful fragrance when first applied, fresh and a bit spicy (from the pepper) however, the lasting power is very shortlived – only about 15 minutes and then I have to reapply. I find this very similar to Diptyque’s Eau De Lierre which lasts for hours on my skin and smells almost identical to me. The FM version is a bit more softer, however, the pepper and cool sharpness seems very similar and a good, slightly cheaper alternative.

Lovely, lovely, lovely! Fresh and spicy, calming and uplifting. Alas doesn’t last more than 2h on me, otherwise I’d have already own a bottle…

well,well.. this one is a spiced up musked out greenish scent. i do like it tho it truly doesn’t last that long. 🙁 i get a sweet and happy vibe from this.
the pepper and juniper makes for a good contrast and it allows for a fresh pepper scent with a sweet under tone to it. maybe the musk also assist with this sweet action also. however this is what some call linear.
it stayed pretty close to the opening and never really changed much, just dulled down after an hour and a half. then it was just a faint musk for then on.. i think i got maybe 3 hours of a fragrance out of this..
so that is truly disappointing for me. i would love this if it lasted for at least 6-8 hours. but alas it does not.
my rate for this one is a 4 out of 10. nice smell clean and pretty but does not last long..
the longevity is comparable to your scent after using like the body shops or maybe lush’s soap.
    🙁

This smells excellent but it only last 15 min tops on me . I have 3 other Frederick Malle fragrance which I love . I wanted to buy this one but at $260cn + Taxes . 15 min of longevity is too loud for me . I love it but it can be my body chemistry .

  33. :

    3 out of 5

To me it was a huge pepperly knock-out. Way too bitter for my fresh musky taste.

  34. :

    4 out of 5

The first time I tried this fragrance, all I really got was a whiff of celery, then not much else. Trying it again a year later, with a new manufacturer’s mini, it has a completely different character. A green-still celery-like opening, which warms up and wraps itself in a delicate musk. Fragrance stays close to the skin, and with a good spray, lasts about 5 hours. It reminds me, strangely, of Eau de Cartier. Just tried the two (one on each wrist) and they do have a similarly, although EdC is sweeter and more floral, but still light and fresh. (5)

  35. :

This is one of the fragrances they recommended for me based on the questionnaire on the Frederic Malle website. Like the other two they recommended for me it’s not for me. Now that I’ve gone and bought the whole coffret, it’s finally clear to me that Frederic Malle and I aren’t on the same page. Pleasant enough, but not for me.

Is like a walk in the forest! I think that green perfumes have a great future, and this is an example. Superlative green, the notes of cedar and coriander gives it an unique personality and arouse the green personality of this creation. Very. Very powerful

  37. :

Loved it from the very first sniff!
It can appear a bit masculine for some, but not for me.. On my skin it turns into a lovely mix of dried angelica, pepper and gin. As was mentioned by some of the other reviewers – it has something gin-ish.
It’s like drinking a really refreshing gin-tonic, while sitting in some Herbarium room, full of dried-plant aroma.
    That’s my two cents.

  38. :

    4 out of 5

i blindly smelled this perfume, among other malle perfumes at the frederic malle counter as recommended by the sales person. overall i don’t like frederic malle’s perfumes as they are too rich and heavy for me, but this one stood out as one i actually like…even during the drydown. the opening had a strong gin smell to it, which i like. i tend to like alcohol/cocktail smelling scents anyways. than it drydown into a lighter more floral but still fresh smell, not overtly feminine either. later the evening i googled and found out it was this scent, due to its gin reference. in the future i would definitely consider this perfume.

  39. :

    5 out of 5

The opening of Frédéric Malle ANGELIQUES SOUS LA PLUIE is really quite beautiful. I approached this perfume with some hesitation because of some prior negative experiences with a couple of other compositions too liberally dosed with angelica. They were something of herbal nightmares, to be perfectly frank (quoi d’autre?). This one certainly is not.
Unfortunately, after a few minutes the angelica has all but dissipated into the cosmos, leaving behind the familiar J.-C. Ellena cedar base common to a couple of the Hermès JARDIN series perfumes. By the drydown, this composition seems more like angelica locked in a cedar closet!

  40. :

    3 out of 5

I’m not sure what to do with this one: it has some fine and exclusive undertones, yet the overall composition leaves some doubts. Alarmingly, I can’t even say that it smells pleasantly. And really, this shouldn’t be the case for any perfume, for even the cheapest of them at least get to the point of smelling nicely. For these reasons: not recommended.

Earthy and grassy, soil of a rainy forest.
Very comfortable smell, like taking shelter from the rain under the tree, or being wrapped by its bark.
    A masculine scent.
Ancient Greek story of Apollo and Daphne crossed my mind.

Ah the mysteries of quirky skin chemistry! I get an initial burst of fresh tonic water mixed with something slightly spicy. I assume this comes from the angelicas. After an hour the scent mellowed into… lead pencil! I’m not joking, even my friend who sampled this with me was shocked. I would sample this again just to confirm the oddness of the reaction with my skin!

  44. :

Wait a minute! Months ago I received a sample of this, I wore it on my wrists for the day and I loved the beginning but I thought it disappeared too rapidly. I promptly forgot about it. Today I rediscovered the sample and decided to use it up for the day. Well, wow!! 8 hours later and I can still smell it as the fragrance periodically comes to my nose. It smells lke a delicious orange citrus martini. Just fresh, fresh, fresh! It is wonderful. There are some indoles in there for sure, but it doesn’t blur the scent. This would be great for the spring, summer and office anytime. I know that Elena continues to use the orange as his signature note and this variation is beautiful.

  46. :

I quite like ASLP and despites the name I think it’s more a masculine. It opens with a crispy, bitter and somehow fresh angelica accord that quickly settles down turning the whole thing to be a clean and trasparent cedar-musc scent. Minimalistic and not very complex but absolutely pleasant and yet quite distinctive. My only disappointment is for the price. A serious contendant if just cheaper.
    Rating: 7/10

The “traditionally masculine” notes of Angéliques Sous La Pluie blend to make one of the most gentle cloud-like true unisex fragrances-pepper over the delicate aroma of young herbs growing under tall cedar woods-the herbal notes of angelica and coriander are so refined that this woody floral musk could scent the clothes of cherubs-or some royalty with the most delicate composition. Almost smells like rain-that could be a note in this fragrance…
As sweet as the water coming from an unpolluted lake in a forest somewhere north, but indeed fresh and bitter and peppery-So beautiful and balanced, sprightly…Why can’t anybody make a fragrance (like this!)so divine without charging as much as Frederic Malle?

  48. :

WOW I love this. I love the masculinity of the woods and pepper in it. It is intoxicating!!

  49. :

The woods after a rain shower, childhood play camps in the undergrowth, sunlight shafting through the canopy, breaking twigs under footfall. This is my life in a bottle, as fresh as a kid running in from the garden, grubby face and shining eyes. The first blast is a real tear jerker, for the “attack” of this fragrance is the coriander “tang” which has scented the skin of every man I fell in love with, whether he deserved it or not. I cant live without this perfume, it is reliable, faithful and gentle.

The packaging says Angelica, Juniper Berries, and Coriander. My chef’s brain says that all adds up to a high quality gin, and that’s what this smells like for the first five minutes, so don’t spray it on just before rolling down the window for the traffic cop who just pulled you over for running that red light. Dries down to an entirely agreeable musk and wood blend. I don’t know if Ellena intended this for men, but it makes a fine, understated, gentlemanly masculine. It’s quite quiet (hey, two anagrams!), and would be great both in the office and out walking in the park. I like it, but not enough to shell out $200 on it; if I was more solvent, it would be on my want list. If anybody bought it and hates it, I’ll take it off of your hands…

Starting with a sharp spicy dry herbs. After a moment adding peppers, (but it is not black ground pepper) and coniferous tree branch. Very fresh and at the same spicy, sunny and warm. With a light smell of angeliques.

Angéliques Sous La Pluie starts off very fresh, very green, very herbally, somewhat familiar… wait a minute, it is Un Jardin Sur Le Nil.
No wonder. The nose behind both fragrances is Jean-Claude Ellena.
It’s hard to describe them other than “fresh” or “green”.
However, Angéliques Sous La Pluie stays on the feminine side, it gets creamy and sweetish upon the drydown, while Un Jardin Sur Le Nil has a more masculine edge.
Soever, if you’re looking for something light and inoffensive, I’d recommend it.

I must say I have to change my review for this now. As I has sprayed this on a coat a week ago and when I went to put this on yesterday It smelled Heavenly.. Wow. Now I must have this. Wish I could describe the scent but nothing comes to mind.. It is unlike anything really I have ever tried. I do like this, but had to give it awhile…

  54. :

I think the opening of this is very tonic and citrusy. I have no idea what angelica is but it dries down on me very peppery. Sorta boring but just sniffing this stuff out of the bottle and not on your skin, is Heavenly.. OHH my I really enjoy just smelling this in the bottle, It just turns too peppery on my skin too boring… almost like bugspray…

  55. :

    5 out of 5

The opening of this fragrance is very fresh and at the same time bitter, spicy, tonic and flowery – Jean-Claude Ellena managed to catch the incredible pure scent of angelicas. (The very first few seconds after spraying it, this fragrance reminds me Louis Feraud “Sunshine Eau d’Ete”.) As time goes by, the smell becomes warmer and softer, i would say even sweeter, until it leaves the scent of dried angelicas put into the pine box together with dried forest berries. Very nice fragrance for early spring or autumn.
