Description

Men’s fragrance Acqua di Gio was launched in 1996 and achieved great success since then. Armani announced the release of the new version – Acqua di Gio Essenza, concentrated as Eau de Parfum.

The new scent is supposedly a timeless and intense reinterpretation of the original. Described as intensely carnal and sensual, Acqua di Gio Essenza is less focused on marine and more on woody and ambery accords. The creator of the perfume is once again Alberto Morillas.

The composition begins with luminous tones of cascalone molecule, which captures the olfactory experience of cold and fresh water, sparkling citrusy bergamot and grapefruit. The heart bares floral and aromatic accords of jasmine, basil and sage, as well as explosive floral paradisone molecule, while the base combines notes of patchouli, cedar, vetiver, ambrox, ambergris, pepper and clary sage.

The fragrance is available as 40, 75 and 170 ml Eau de Parfum.
Acqua di Gio Essenza was launched in 2012.

Ladies and gentlemen, I simply state that it is a SPLENDOR for my nostrils (and for those around the world). Built on the classic giò water, this is much nicer than the scent. For me it is THE summer fragrance par excellence. Among the friends of giò is my favorite one. I close my eyes and see the sea. A sea at the will of a stormy wind. Among the various ridges of the waves a wood appears, which is slowly pushed to shore. I touch him, I turn around, I sniff him and here I feel close to poseidone in person. A color for this perfume: Turquoise. A state of mind: quiet. A celebrity: Jules Verne. Among my favorite fragrances!

This is a very unique fragrance. This smells peppery. It is very sexy and harsh (Which is good). Good for someone who has the beard with muscles. Not for slim young guys. Good for someone who is masculine 25+ with the beard and the muscles. Better than Dior Sauvage or ADG Profumo.

My signature fragrance is the original Acqua di gio. Essenza has the original DNA but with double lasting power, actually very impressive lasting power for a fresh aquatic scent.Smells expensive.I wear it all year round, despite so many reviewers say that it is a summer scent. White, clean and sophisticated.

    10/10 for me.
Ps there are some whisperings that they will discontinue the essenza and they will replace it with the absolu. WTF this is unfair. Go get yourself some bottles if you still can find it.

Out of the Gio line, Essenza is the only one that’s not annoying to smell. The original Gio has a sharp, in your face tone all day long. Essenza is the aquatic, fresh, pure water smell of Gio.

When I first tried this the hairs on my tongue stood straight up and took notice. The hairs in my nostrils bristled, tickling the inside of my nose. I was a happy scent wearer that day. Second wearing the hairs on the palms of my hands began waving back and forth causing my hands to clap together four or five times, the hair of my moustache moved my mouth up and down forcing me to blurt out “bravo!” I like this one

Really? This masterpiece is going to be replaced by Aqua di Gio Absolu. It has to be a joke.

I catch a whiff of some kind of rotten eggs during the dry down kind of like the smell after you put out a match mixed with a aquatic vibe. Very forgettable.

Aquatics get the cold shoulder from niche and indie houses in general due to their perceived shallow content, synthetic character, and general appeal to the lowest common denominator. Perhaps the biggest issue is what the resulting issues come from: the difficulty in compiling a high quality, less abrasive, long lasting, and interesting composition. This is made all the more difficult in the amount of synthetic materials that take a citrus based fragrance to an aquatic fragrance. This is in part because, in the 90’s the market became hyper-saturated by the rise of the aquatic perfume. This is thanks to the discovery during the 60’s of a fragrant compound that goes by many names: Aquamore, Watermelon Ketone, Ozonor, Ozeone, Calone 161 or simply Calone. In 1997 Cascalone, as a more intensely ozonic and aldehydic smell variation of Calone was introduced, which removed some problematic elements for Calone in its incorporation into compositions (notably an oyster fragrance.)
The other issue is, when one of these oceanic fragrances became popular, it was worn in droves, specifically by those without a general awareness of fragrance in the slightest, and thus, as was the case with the original Acqua di Gio, the scent was almost synonymous with adolescents who, one drop short of bathing in the fragrance, consumed the area around them with their scent. After many reformulations, and endless bottles sold, in 2012 Armani released the first flanker to what was looking to be the greatest seller of its time. Enter Acqua di Gio Essenza: a more crisp, more intense, saltier and more woody/floral rendition of Acqua di Gio – it brought, upon release, many back to the original formulation of Acqua di Gio, only with added lasting power, and more intense than they had remembered it. As many niche houses had been dabbling with acquatics in the hopes to find seome area of the market that had not been totally dominated by Acqua Di Gio, they were suddenly met with a very difficult challenge.
When one approaches the original formulation of Acqua di Gio Essenza, one gets a hefty dose of Cascalone, a chemical concoction of citruses which seem almost indiscernable, with perhaps the exception of grapefruit, and a newly utilized jasmine absolute (which is boosted by the paradisone in heavy doses) instead of the previously used jasmine essence. The atlas cedar used here is quite intense as well, and boosted by Ambrox in the base giving it a nearly glowing character, which is directly contradicted by the intense salty/mineral effect of the Cascalone. The overall feeling is one of driftwood, perhaps something of a high end chlorinated pool, and some sort of jasmine inspired masculine body soap. The wood here is certainly of note when comparing to the original Acqua di Gio, as it is, aside from the overall saltiness, the greatest immediate change. One of the other big changes is the basil, which adds a crisp green character under the slew of salt and woods, which comes to bear on the jasmine inspired soap, as it is a masculine greenness which keeps the overall composition from leaning too heavily floral (despite the fact that the Paradisone extends the floral content nearly endlessly.)
In the base, as the fragrance dries down the smokier aspects of the cedar are met with its syllogistic counterpart: vetiver. The interesting thing here is how long-lasting the Cascalone is here – acquatic elements are usually either too synthetic, and as such fail to meet the criteria of a genuinely convincing acquatic aspect, or disappears with the opening – as such, as the surrounding elements of the fragrance shift around, the Cascalone remains with as much strength as it once had – thus when arriving at this smoky element at the base, the salty/acquatic character is still present, and one finds a very pleasant, semi-paradoxical character lasting the rest of the fragrance, which is found again in other massively popular fragrances like bleu de Chanel with its citrus/incense accord, and as such it seems to present itself as a sharper, more refined, more mature and deeper take on what many noses recognize already as the signature ‘cologne smell’ of the 90’s, and to many that remains a positive connotation – one that states, in many places, refinement in general of a middle-class character, for less we forget in our bubbles here or on basenotes, for many,
cologne/perfume/fragrance is a thing of luxury, and one scarcely used.
Overall, for a very synthetic and a very popular fragrance, Acqua di Gio Essenza, in its earliest formulation, is a force to be reckoned with. It may not win any awards for being groundbreaking or daring, but it is in fact a forward step, even for those whose taste in fragrance leans more towards the snobbish and elitist (as I must confess mine do,) Acqua di Gio Esenza’s earlier formulations are very pleasing, as far as synthetic fragrances can be, and something worth seeking out as a piece of market-conscious genius, and compositional incredulity.
There are, in my estimation, few acquatic fragrances that simply work as well as Acqua di Gio Essenza.

Probably my favorite from the billions of aquatics. More than the sum of its parts and clearly a great choice if you want to smell nice but you don’t want to offend the tyrant (boss) who steals the fruits of your labor.

    Definitely great scent.
When sprayed on clothes, i notice strong Woody and floral notes.
But when sprayed on my skin. Essenza is definitely AdG’s brother. The similarity is obviously there, with stronger citrus notes.
This is “sweeter” version of the Classic AdG
The woody and floral notes are more dominant.
Just as the name suggest, Essenza is pretty much jacked up AdG base notes.
    Original AdG :
    Cute guy, clean shaven..
    Casual, but well dressed.
    Essenza :
AdG twin brother, with a goatee and more muscular
    Love to wear tailored suit
    Longevity : 7 / 10
    Projection : 7 / 10

I got this perfume as a gift when it was released. When I first smelled it, I closed my eyes and the first thing that came to my mind was a mediterranean scenario. I even wore it during cold winters and got compliments. Now tbh I changed my taste and like other scents better. Still a banger though, and better than Profumo

  14. :

    Easy dumb reach.
Essenza is an easy to wear scent, great for the office or casual.
Citrus fresh, slightly green and uplifting.
I do get a slight synthetic vibe, but otherwise it’s nice.
    I’ve heard it’s discontinued?..
Shame, because I think it’s the best Acqua di Gio.

  15. :

I always loved this fragrance but I couldn’t buy it because I had Perry ellis red at the time and they were identical but the latter being way stronger, better performing.
Fast forward I purchase this fragrance because of fear, it is being discontinued.
It is not woody anymore as it was when vintage. Has more a profumo vibe now.
    Grossly overpriced.

What a rollercoaster! I was turned off by the idea of mainstream aquatics, then I fell in love with this. Then I fell out of love and bored by this. Then I was in quandary because, truthfully, I want nothing to do with this fragrance. But I get more compliments from it than almost anything else!
So um two attractive females said how much they like this and immediately after their friend said it reminded her of Hollister. Not a particular Hollister fragrance but the vibe of Hollister the brand. Little did she know that would dramatically cheapen it forever in my eyes. Last straw, final nail.

    4 out of 5

I agree with those saying this has a feminine vibe. Profumo is still the best flanker in the Acqua di Gio line and ideal for the gentlemen on a summer night at the beach or outdoor dining with your lady. In contrast, Essenza is just too unisex for my style. I gave my sample to the wife and she loves it. And she only wears feminine perfumes so that tells me everything I need to know about ADG Essenza

    NOTICE!
Hey FragComm – IF you are a fan of ADG Essenza, I have it on decent authority that this one is headed for discontinuance by Armani.
The “proof” is everywhere – it’s extremely hard to find this in stores now that Absolu has hit the shelves, plus the prices for this which were as low as $45-$50 for a 2.5oz have jumped up 20-30%.
Furthermore, I checked out the Armani website the other day and while Essenza is still listed, directly above the image you’ll find the wording “LAST CHANCE” posted over ONLY that fragrance.
It’s going away folks, which is surprising, but I don’t think they want Profumo, Absolu and Essenza and while Profumo is far more popular among the community, Essenza is actually rated higher on this website.
Anyway – Wanted to pass this one on so that you can scoop up a bottle (like I did) before the price skyrockets. You can still get a 2.5 on ebay for around $60.

I pick up calone note well and I smell something like metalic blood, but it disapears after an hour, somehow I like this smell – which is kind of bizarre but when I asked my girlfriend if she smells eggs or blood she said: Absolutely no, you smell fresh, elegant and fancy.
Perhaps calone smells like this only close to the skin.
Anyway you get Aqua Di Gio EDT smell but more refined and manly.
I would say it’s more mature/woody/spicy with less impact on the fruity side. I prefer wearing this over EDT cause I can pick up a lot more of small features which make the fragrance experience more complex, thus interesting. Not mention the longevity for a ”fresh” scent which is around 5-7 hours and that’s enough. Interesting take on the classic making it less generic. 8.5/10 for me.

Giorgio Armani Acqua di Gio Essenza is better than Giorgio Armani Acqua di Gio Profumo! Both of Giorgio is fresh, nice and good for all seasons but essenza is more freshy! It is a perfume that sells well,..The opening is very similar to the original. The sillage is good, and luckily. Any people think Giorgio Armani Acqua di Gio is the best but I think no need to count what best seller is? Essenza’s next generation!

    Signature scent worthy!!!

  30. :

    3 out of 5

ADG Profumo has only a little resemblance to the original ADG, despite what some users will tell you. ADG Essenza, on the other hand, takes the original and gives it monster performance while dialing back the sweet notes slightly. It is the true successor in the line and most similar to the great scent of the original. Essenza is about 2x the price of the original and based on performance, it’s worth it!

  31. :

    5 out of 5

Just as seldomseen describes below, I can only concur.
This resembles the original ADG with slightly increased performance, and to my nose a little more refinement. Nothing sticks out and no single note dominates at any point, neither during the initial blast or in the dry down. This i think is an advantage and hints at a more balanced blend.
It stands on its own compared to Profumo, which takes the ADG DNA and moves it in a slightly different direction. In my opinion they should not be compared, as the comparison of Essenza lies with ADG instead. Essenza maintains the ADG DNA throughout.
In my opinion ADG and Essenza are comparable in the sence of EdT vs. EdP. Profumo and Absolu are different beasts and I see those more as re-interpretations, rather than stronger versions of the original.
Performance is very good on my skin, which is a rare occurrence. I get somewhere between 6 to 7 hours before it becomes a skin scent that lingers for a few hours more. Projection is as you would want, no more than arms length.
For those that cares about what the opposite sex think: My wife likes this one a lot
A worthy buy even blind, especially if you do not already have ADG.

  32. :

    4 out of 5

Essenza was a blind buy (May ’18) for me, and a good one for that matter! Essenza only smells like Profumo from the atomizer, and from the initial spray blast.
Essenza actually smells like a richer, more refined, and intense version of the original ADG. (Essenza retains the freshness of the original ADG). If you like the original ADG, but want an intense version of it — Essenza is your best bet. Essenza would be an excellent cologne to add to one’s summer & spring rotation.
Also, I don’t get any of the weird blood, egg, et cetera, smell that some people claim to be smelling. lol
    Overall (scent): 9/10

  33. :

    3 out of 5

To my nose this is Acqua di Gio with more green notes like basil and clary sage, less oceanic/marine saltwater as in the original (that is probably how my nose detects calone), and increased strength of projection and longevity. It retains the beautiful bergamot of the original Acqua di Gio but lacks the strong lime note as in the original. Some say it’s better than the regular Acqua di Gio but I feel this is a sidegrade rather than an upgrade to the original. Sillage is moderate leaning strong while longevity is very good. Overall, this is one of the greatest fragrances I’ve ever smelled and definitely in my top 5 of all time on scent alone (as well as the original Acqua di Gio, which I also like due to the stronger lime note; original Acqua di Gio performs really well on me as well). This apparently is discontinued by Armani as well so it won’t be available in the market soon.
UPDATE: This is definitely better than the original due to the absolutely amazing basil note in this making it smell green and fresh like you’re walking in a forest, and having a sort of barbershop vibe to the whole thing. Stock up while you can! This is my second favourite fragrance of all time, period. It just smells spectacular in every way.

I finally got a chance to try both Profumo and Essenza side by side .
Both were identical and it was very hard to pick one , I went with Essenza mainly because of the lasting power , Profumo was undetectable on my skin after 15 mins .
And the most important point NO EGG SMELL even after sniffing as hard as possible even my friends could not detect that.
Also I loved the 180ml bottle , it’s simple yet elegant with the magnetic cap !

  35. :

    5 out of 5

Ok so I only like rich, dense, sophisticated fragrances. To me, these terms were not synonymous with the themes of fresh and aquatic. Well this is all of these things. The coolest, cleanest guy is wearing this in summer. The guy who gets ready in 15 minutes and somehow looks and smells better than everyone else. I wore this in my kitchen today and somehow smelled fresh af for hours. I got compliments on it the second I walked in the building. This has so much more depth and sophistication than the edt.
    Great bottle too!

  36. :

    5 out of 5

I never wanted ADG or anything like it because it is so ubiquitous. Then I kept waking up in different girls houses and noticing old bottles of the stuff laying around… it was the scent of someone they saw once and the person had left a few different ones but they kept that one because they like it so much. Same story time after time. And then essenza came along and let me feel like I went at least a step better anyway. And I know people love it. So I bought and now I’m one of them.

  37. :

    3 out of 5

Amazing smell. Pure Infatuation. Pure Perfection.

  38. :

    3 out of 5

Essenza reminds you of the original, but with more of a soft woody heart that sets it apart from the original. Sure to be a crowd pleaser to both men and women. More of a Spring, Summer, early Fall scent that remains within your own personal space. Essenza would be a compliment to those special occasions rather than just your every day, run of the mill offering.
Best scent for morning use, best combination with polo sport at midday and guess seductive at night.

  39. :

    3 out of 5

Essenza seems like a redundant release, and that’s best suited for those that truly love the original ADG, which I personally “like”, but don’t enjoy. There are way to many softer, fresher, more appealing, and easier to wear summer freshies that I can reach for.
For me, the ADG line is a an acquired taste that loses it’s luster pretty fast. I find that the ADG line all have a weird infusion of “stink”, “dank” designed to give the colognes its potency, but ultimately ends up smelling like body odor of sorts in hot and humid temperatures.
Consequently, I can see what the brand decided to take a different approach and release a sweet, light, aromatic flanker this year — Acqua Di Gio Absolu to address this problem.

  40. :

    4 out of 5

I think all knows the smell but for those that hadn’t smelled it’s fresh cool and clean minty floral ice scent…. lasts longer than all aquatic fresh other fragrances! All will notice you.

  41. :

    4 out of 5

Better than profumo, this essenza resulta more balanced and wereable… this is what profumo would be.

  42. :

    4 out of 5

Acqua di Gio Essenza is reworked just slightly to offer a more intense expression of Italian cool. Brightening notes of bergamot, neroli, tangerine and ozonic marine notes remain just the same, but are made more intense with jasmine absolute instead of jasmine essence, while an infusion of intensely green and aromatic patchouli in the dry down adds further complexity.
As it is an Eau de Parfum, Acqua di Gio Essenza lasts for a longer time on the skin. The depth of the fragrance is instantly apparent due to the level of concentration – you can detect the woodiness of the base notes right from the first spray, which immediately sets it apart from the more citrussy Acqua di Gio. While you can tell that the fragrance is a relation of the original Gio, it definitely cuts a sexier and more sophisticated shape. It could easily be referred to as Gio after dark!
    The perfect scent.

I wanted to buy another bottle of original ADG, and I found out this is longer lasting. I chose this instead the normal one, hoping my husband would love it too. It does smell similar but my nose identify this fresher than ADG. A more younger and modernize version of ADG, lesser woody notes.

  46. :

    3 out of 5

If you want a more mature and longer lasting version of the original, this is it.
It smells a little more spicy, a little resinous, and has a little bit more grapefruit than the original. Still a crowd pleasing and easy to wear aquatic.
last 6 to 8 hours on me with moderate projection. Suitable for the office or casual summer days or nights. I do not get a sense of blood or eggs, like some have said , which almost discouraged me from this juice.
Recommended and I respect the looks of the bottle.

This is my go to summer scent!
    Summer time workhorse!
The scent is very smooth and sparkling mixture of soft citrus and aquatic notes balanced with a pinch of spice and herbs leaning on a solid woody base.
Very classic – clean non offensive
Very versatile – dress up or down.
Very beastly 10 to 12 hrs plus
    Strongest citrus aquatic!!!!

  48. :

    3 out of 5

Almost identical to the original ADG, except for two aspects (for me, anyway): First I notice a more peppery charge in the opening, making for a welcome pop. Then later on as the top and heart notes settle out, I notice more of a woodsy warmth that extends out well into the life of the fragrance, making it seem stronger and longer lasting (though not by that much). Still clean and fresh like the original, only a bit more dimensional and interesting to my nose.
Personally, I love this stuff. But if you own the original and/or ADG Profumo (even more pronounced in its variance), is this one worth owning? I honestly can’t say – but I myself do not regret the purchase.
If you like this or the ADG scent profile in general, you may want to try Perry Ellis 360 Red and/or Paris Hilton’s Just Me. Each is right up the same alley and is a fantastic value in its own right.

This is one potent citrusy aquatic. It has very fresh and crisp top notes (I get piercing citrus effect and pepper) and impressive longevity (for a freshie). It isn’t very sweet. In the beginning, I get the mouthwatering effect of freshly squeezed lemon juice. But it isn’t a linear scent… at all. On my skin, the crisp top and middle notes subside in the first 2-4 hours, and the morphing begins. I seem to get some cranberry vodka coctail vibe with some unwanted sweetness, some marine saltiness with it, and surprisingly, on clothes, gets quite powdery and clean at the end of the day. I like both the first and the last phase, but in between, there’s some confusing ambiguity, depending on whether you apply it on the clothes or on the skin. The first, calone-fresh phase and the last, powdery-clean phase (on clothes) seem to be polar opposites to each other. So, all in all, a bit confusing scent, but the longevity is excellent and the initial long-lasting freshness is a quality in itself.
    ***
I’ve tested it again and again, and it is still morphing. One day, it is a salty jasmine-scented liquid hand soap or jasmine-scented air freshnener with the aforementioned sulfur note (egg smell). Another day, it is all about natural salty seawater and mineral sand with summery flower notes in the breeze. The ambergris note can be perceived as egg smell or sea smell, depending on what you’re looking for. But the main player seems to be jasmine (along with the cucumbery calone and citruses), which I’m not a fan of, but in this concoction, I’m beginning to like it a little bit, just because it is very clean and long-lasting.
My conclusion is that, from a distance, it’s a practical fragrance, a “workhorse” thanks to it’s cold “piercing” qualities and shifting balances, but on closer examination, the profile seems to lose it’s clarity. It’s almost like an op art effect.

aka Eau De Fraiche Aqua Di Gio – not very good, certainly my least favorite of the 3. This one has a soapy, standard cologne smell, dry down is peppery, the lemon and lime is heightened but less sweet than the original which is tasty, this is more like bug spray, total opposite of Profumo which is much much more quality imo. Wouldn’t purchase again and probably wont finish my bottle.

Thank God I don’t get an egg smell off this. All I get is the original genetics of the original EDT, but this is more crisp and fresh. Also a little bit more woodsy. 9/10

Not sure if this has been reformed but i dont get anything like the performance most are saying. i bought two bottles taking it for granted it was such a strong scent. i loved the opening so much i think i got a bit carried away. ah well. i do also pick up the egg smell but its not that bad.i love the smell itself, maybe its just one of those scents that causes me fatigue. will test it on others and see how it performs and report back.

Exceptional stuff. The cedar, pepper, and clary sage in the drydown set this far and apart from the original. Slightly reminiscent of Cartier Declaration, but just slightly. Like the first ADG in many respects, however it lacks the sour, sometimes cloying bitter citrus top notes, but retains the DNA that I’ve enjoyed for so many years. If you have gotten bored with the original release, I strongly recommend this one.

Got a 75ml bottle. About the egg-smell of Essenza, it’s true & happens only if you spray on dirty cloths. But absolutely nice smell on skin. I loved this fragrance very very much!

Just to say again about egg-smell of Essenza. If it smell like that, it means that it is very long on shelve- non used. When you spray brand new one, it smells right. It happened to me, so I am writting this from my own experience.

Really happy with this purchase. I own the original, essenza, and profumo. I started with the original but was quickly unhappy with the performance, so I went ahead and purchased profumo. I like profumo and performance is great, but its a bit too dark (incense note is very strong in the dry down) for everyday use. I’m also not a huge fan of incense notes, so I get tired of fragrances that use this note BdC, BdC EDP, Versace DB are all fragrances I have stopped using due to the incense note. Maybe it’s because I’m still in my 20s, but I can’t see how girls would enjoy the incense smell.
I decided to stop by the store today and I checked out essenza again — I’ve tested it before on paper, but I really didn’t like the scent it gave off on paper. There was a weird egg/sulfur note that you can smell when you spray it on paper, so I had quickly passed on essenza initially. I tried it on skin, and it is a completely different scent.
Essenza is a more amped up/woody, smoother, and a bit more linear version of the original. Additionally, there is no weird egg/sulfur note when sprayed on skin. Performance is impressive with this — I get a good 3-4 hours of projection and 6-7 hours longevity. Very impressive for a fresh scent.
I couldn’t be happier with this purchase, and I will likely stack up on multiple bottles once my company receives the next family sale tickets. Really worried this could be reformulated like the original, so I will need to grab multiple bottles before then.

The original Acqua Di Gio became my signature fragrance back in 1996 upon it’s release when I purchased whilst on holiday on the Greek island of Rhodes. I’ve long been a fan of fresh citrus / woody fragrances so this hit the spot immediately.
Perhaps when combined with the view I was enjoying from my holiday appt terrace whilst watching a beautiful Mediterranean sunset when 1st applied, it had ‘added value’! Who knows, but what I do know is that I’m transported back to that moment in time now whenever I wear or smell ADG.
I tried a sample of ‘Essenza’ back in December 2012, not long after it’s release & was blown away immediately. I didn’t think that my favourite fragrance could be improved upon & don’t get me wrong, that’s not exactly what I think has happened here … I’d rather like to think that this is a slig
