I think that the year of launchment is not 1982, but some moment in the late 1910’s or early 1920’s. Apparently, the nose behind this was the Russian perfumist Meissonier, who was also the creator of Maja.
It has been a long time since the last time I saw this in a shop, I wonder if this has been discontinued; if so, it would be a pity. I had it as a teenager, one of my first perfumes. I think there was a period in Spain during which everybody had this at home or had used it in some moment of his life.
1916 is a lovely citrus-herbal-amber classic cologne, very much in the 4711 or Roger & Gallet Extra Vielle fashion. It was more ambery that 4711, and less herbal than Roger & Gallet. Sillage and lasting power were weak, of course, being this an Eau de Cologne, but it was very unexpensive and came in a wide range of practical bottles and atomizers. In some moment in the 90’s, they released a flanker of this called “Hierba Fresca” (“fresh meadow”), or something like that, which is not here in the Fragrantica database. The bottle and the box were the same, but with green hues instead of yellow. The smell was too sharp and bitter to my taste. It was not successful, and discontinued very soon.

This is a lovely little citrus/floral that consits of rosemary, orange blossom, lemon and bergamot. The lemon and bergamot appear sharp and crisp initally with the orange blossom and rosemary being the more dominant notes throughout its wearing.
Feel free to pour it on, as it’s not overpowering at all and it’s likely to be gone after a couple of hours, but it’s what is expected. I say it’s a worthwhile citrus to have on your shelf.
Also – I am not sure the relationship to other bottles of 1916. Mine is “Agua de Colonia: 1916” – and I see some other bottles for sale that just say 1916 that have different labels and boxes and whatnot.

I like this; however, like most other citrus fragrances, it just doesn’t last on me. As a matter of fact, it fades even faster than Hermes’ Eau d’Orange Verte and Acqua di Parma Colonia (and I prefer the fragrance of Colonia over 1916 anyway). But I refuse to stop searching for a lasting citrus frag. Perhaps I should consider concocting my own…
