This fragrance is so classy and if you have spent endless time trying to find a fragrance with a slight barber-shop vibe that’s easy to wear and well-refined…search no more.
    Cerruti 1881!
Just like recommending “Boss Bottled Oud” for “Oud beginners” I would recommend Cerruti 1881 for “Barber Shop beginners”.
    Fresh, green, classy and versatile!

This baby is totally underrated. Personally, I wouldn’t mind keeping it that way.
Yes, this definitely has an old-man vibe to it. Picture salt-and-pepper hair in a white linen shirt, slim jeans, a pair of Chuck Taylors, black wayfarers.
So yeah, this stuff smells awesome. Nothing stuffy here. This will make a young man classy, and an old man hip — without ever smelling like he’s trying too hard.
Crisp, clean, slightly powdery, blue-green aromatic fougere. Perfectly balanced. The first images that come to mind are powdery green and clear water. Definitely also echo what Jondelour (two comments below) wrote.
Safe for a blind buy if you like clean, classic, inoffensive, barbershoppy fougeres.
If you’ve read this far, just buy it already, it’s $20!

I do like this scent, but there’s just something “old” about it that I can’t quite put my finger on. I’m not sure if it’s similar to things worn by my dad or even grandad in the 1980s, but it pushes some big nostalgia buttons for me. Fresh and green with a quite floral opening for me, although that very quickly fades leaving behind a slightly soapy and clean scent with some pine and slight woodiness.

I deeply love the herbal green opening
It’s an aromatic fougere, so it needs
time to take it all in.
To those who smell it and repel, (Moss scares some noses, try to go with it, it’s still fragrance, not Grandpa)
give it a try over time, it’s complex and beautifully deep green and fresh to begin.
Then light and fresh flowery on the
    drydown.
It’s very well done, especially considering it’s price tag.
The sport version is very nice aswell.

i think this is not for me , it smells very mature like 52 years old uncle. i can even handle Terre D’Hermes but not this one. It smells very soapy, very clean. it absolutely smells very nostalgic somehow . It can be used in every time of the year in my opinion.
edit: the patchouli and the cedar is very obvious , dominant at the base.

    Another modern Classic
This has classic aspects of vetiver and green notes, but makes them modern by becoming transparent and almost aquatic.
It is as if a 80s fragrance was evolving into aqua di gio, but kept it’s elegance and kept some character.
A easy to recommend and love cheapy for casual use or the new fragrance lover.
If you are looking for a gift for dad , this is a great one too.
One of the best and easy to reach for
    Highly Recommended
This is what I expected 212 men to smell like , personally

Such a good, classy, masculine fragrance. It’s slightly old school, but not dated. Long lasting and perfect for hot weather.
When I asked my wife if she like it she said, “Yes! Those are the kinds I like on you the most!” Win for me since I love it too.
This is a good one for someone who is looking for a cheap, classic scent. Go get it.

My 100 bottle fragrance collection is the result of blind-buying each and every bottle. Yes, every purchase was a roll of the dice. Fortunately, only a few were disappointments. And I was prepared to be disappointed with the bottle of Cerruti 1881 that just arrived this morning. I am happy to report that I love it! It definitely reminds me of Lauder for Men, which I also enjoy. But as the Cerruti dries down, I actually find it more interesting than the Lauder—more nuanced. I’m happy with this new acquisition. And I can enthusiastically recommend Cerruti 1881 to anyone who is familiar with Lauder for Men and likes that style.

I bought my bottle of Cerutti 1881 in 2016.I remember smelling it in the early 90’s and loved it,but somehow in the shuffle of life I forgot about it ,then could not find it for years.
I always had 2 -3 bottles of frags lying around and in 2016 I started my real frag journey. I
went to a shop and saw this and a week later bought it.Loved it years ago and still do.
My bottle is from 2011 so it is strong and lively and the bottle is a work of art,the kind you keep once the bottle is empty. One of the best Aromatic/fougere type scents ever,no mistaking how masculine this is!

Bought 1881 Cerruti for my lover and I love it. It’s fresh, mossy, piny and forest green. And guess what, it reminds me of Eau du Soir from Sisley (yeah, really it does!) which I adore. Maybe because of the juniper, oakmoss and patchouli but specially because of that spicy, woody freshness. Some things in life are just timeless. A masterpiece!

I get a lot of cypress, juniper and citrus. Fresh, and green and great for the warmer months.
Quite elegant and and wonderfully put together from the perfumer that gave us Lapidus Pour Homme.
Sadly the more recent versions don’t last well on my skin.
One I had in my collection for some time.

Fantastic fresh, light fragrance with a smooth spicy element. Sits on the appealing side of the ethanol-esque sharpness where the presence is welcome rather than something that makes you turn your face away. A fragrance I had worn for almost 5 years religiously before moving on to experiment more.

Light, summery, fresh. There is a bit of fir in this that really makes it smell mature, outdoorsy, and clean. The thing I love about 1881 is that while it gives a hat tip to the old school, it remains aloof from era-categorization to me. The decided lack of any sweetness is so refreshing these days. It comes across as dry, like a walk in the arid mountain air scented with stone-pine tree needles under the intense Mediterranean sun. The dry down combines this masculine scent with a soapy, floral undercurrent that gives the aura of elegance. Sillage is polite, enough to wear in any occasion. Longevity, for me, is not bad at all for a fresh scent, 4-6 hours but longer close to the skin. 1881 is a comforting fragrance and, for the price, quite an amazing achievement. Wonderful!

Can’t even say how many times I passed shelf with Cerutti 1881 in shop. Always thought 90’s staff will be pretty boring.. Silly me , now I love 80’s and 90’s all of them smell manly , sexy and different. My favourite part is drydown. That woody/musky smell grrrrr Beautiful. My bottle is from 2017 ( I belive ) and on shirt lasted really long time with good projetion as well. Plus, suits perfect for Northern Irish weather 🙂

if they can remove the Oakmoss it will be very great scent

  16. :

For me, Cerruti 1881 (batch 6286/2016) is like a lighter, brighter and softer correspondent of Salvador Dali Pour Homme, plus/minus 1-2 notes! Always wearable. The longevity and sillage are above average. Good quality/price ratio. Discreet, classy, complex, tonic and versatile. Suitable for men, but true MEN.
    Smell 9/10
    Longevity 7.5/10
    Projection 6.5/10
    Quality/price ratio 8.5/10
Too bad they destroyed 1881 by reformulations. Disappointing!

Just recieved a 2017-bottle (batch.nr. 7277) 25ml edt of this, made in France, and after letting the juice settle down and obtain room-temperature, I put on 3-4 sprays.
This is a very, very nice and pleasant fougere and to my nose, smells well blended and certainly non-synthetic.
No oakmoss-extract is listed in the ingredients-list on the box, but it doesn’t smell completely moss-free..?
Allthough this 2017-bottle smells very nice, I have (for comparison) just ordered a vintage 50ml bottle where the juice is ambery-yellow with oakmoss and first-grade oils, yum-yum!
(the 2017-juice has barely any colour in it).
    8/10 – highly recommended 😉

Blind bought online, got this, open the box. Its smell like a citrus fougere scent it’s a masculine and aromatic the dry down is like a chill wind air that arouse the senses of smell. In a close quarter space people will stop and think and try to figure out why there sense of smell is telling there brain. JUST give a chill up your spine. Using it at any given occasion. Wonderful and Chilling.

  19. :

Very closed to a masterpiece,a very lineal aromatic fougere, fresh, sweet, woodie, lemony, peppery, has a dandy character of elegance and sophistication. I can see the similarities with Bucheron but Bucheron smells more powdery and niche .Also Bucheron has a more predominant Neroli/bergamot/petitgrain accord. Cerrutti stands still as a classic in modern perfumery. Absolutely recommended.

  20. :

    5 out of 5

Wasn’t a fan when I first got this, but has since grown on me.
Definitely reminds me of Lauder for men. I would say it was Elegant more than mature. a deceptively complex fragrance that is very masculine without trying too hard.

  21. :

    5 out of 5

    I love this so much.
Definitely an aromatic fougere in the mold of Paco Rabanne etc. Its a pine forest blast with very fresh greens. Not sweet at all and only very slightly citrusy. the oakmoss gives it an older feel, reminds me of Tsar. It also has a soapy clean feel, I could definitely use this getting out of the shower except maybe in really cold weather because it’s not in any way warm.
This is extremely contemporary. It came out in 1990 and it definitely feels half way between the powerhouses of the 80s and the slightly more fun, wearable 90s. If you want a classic smell but want something that isn’t polarizing and will blend in well today buy this. Great price, great bottle, I found it in a store today but they only had a 25ml bottle so I had to pass 🙁 so frustrating. Will buy the big bottle as soon as I can.

Many people say that this Cerruti reminds them of the past, connecting this perfume with something old like grandpa, smell of barber shop and so on, right or wrong ?
Well, Mediterranean is one of the oldest places on planet, and millions of tourists from all over the world are visiting charming places in these areas, enjoying old architecture, culture, sea, cuisine and so on. It’s no wonder that this perfume ( originally from Italy ) was created just there, in the heart of that region, where style is most important thing. It has all that vibe of the sea, Mediterranean spices, Cypress and woody smell. This fragrance smells so simple like it has only one-way-note of projection, but it is actually very complex and masculine perfume and that is what makes you like it. Have anyone noticed that I mentioned couple of times word “OLD” above?
Therefore, this is not designers trendy-fragrance for a metrosexual or a club guy. Also, It can be worn by nicely dressed younger man because it oozes with sex appeal, that’s right. Cerruti is a scent of a stylish-real man, not an old man.
Anyone wearing boots on the beach will look weird, so will be a person wearing flip flops in Alaska. If (Dior Homme range, One Million, A*men, Tom ford) are pefumes for colder weather, this Cerruti is totaly opposite, and will not fit or perform in such areas, maybe it could smell different then it should. Notice that this is also not a marine -citrus fresh scent. Take care about this, before buying this frag, because performance can vary. It is non offensive frag, sillage is moderate but will be arround you for a long time during the day as a noticable skin scent.
It’s obvious that Cerruti is very simmilar to original Dior Eau Sauvage (1966-2000). Cerruti is more woody, while Dior is more citrusy, and drydown is different for that matter. But, both are great. On the other hand, ADG is fantastic summer perfume accepted all around the the world and can be used anywhere anytime, but Cerruti is at home exactly where it is created – in Italy.
So, guys, buy your self Maserati convertible and drive it from Genova to Monaco on a sunny day, and spray some Cerruti-of course, it will make your day.
Did I remember to say to buy Maserati first ?

Its like a heavy powdery bogart one man show that after 30 minutes a tangerine
    Note developes ,very mature scent
I would say dated but it has a lot more class then bogart and the tangerine thing
Is very intresting so i’ll test it more.
    In a colder inviroment.
Performance is very good but try before buy.
Its fruty if you smell the projection.
If you smell directly from skin
You get a whiff of your grand father.
In my contry most of the hotels use this
Kind of scent as an airfreshener for the
Loby. I cant say its not good its very
High quality just less my styl..
    Enjoy.
Update: this one is effected very much from the oxygen
After i opened the bottle and used it a few times it
Is more sweet and the fruty note s more pronounced.
Defenetly something i can put more often .
Update: now its cold weather and also
The bottled has aired so the scent changed
This abslotly butifull scent classy and
For me not as dated as befor ..im
Defenetly loving this and use it a lot more.

There was a sense of familiarity with this the first few times I wore it. It’s powdery, sweet but not overly, the green tempers the sweet. A little citrus, a little floral, a little earthy, a little powdery. If you look at most of the notes that are listed and smell it you can likely find it. I got asked today if I was wearing Obsession by CK, and the sense of familiarity hit me. I haven’t worn Obsession since the early 2000’s but from what I remember this is in that same wheelhouse. I looked up Obsession on Fragrantica and sure enough the notes are similar. I would like to smell Obsession again to really do a comparison as it’s been nearly 2 decades but not enough to buy it again. Drawing on old memories although 1881 is similar, it’s a little less cloyingly sweet, slightly more floral, and a little ‘smoother’, if that makes sense. I could still smell it wafting after an 8+ hour day so good staying power, decent sillage, excellent price point. I’ll likely not buy another bottle but I’ll definitely finish the one.

Kind of reminds me of Halston Z-14 but with less citrus. I definitely prefer this over my bottle of Halston. More refined and better performance. This is an old school scent but I feel a younger man such as myself should have no problem pulling this off. Great for wear around the office or at school. Overall a great purchase that only cost me $25 for a 3.4 oz bottle.

1881 for man is a highly underrated fragrance. It is easy to buy it online for 18~20 Euros (100 ml).
It is one of the 80’s aromatic fougere beastie mode frags that still sells today; Thanks god for it as it would be a shame not being able to buy this Cerruti masterpiece any longer.
Cerruti is still launching flankers of this EDT. The last one I tried is 1881 Signature for man (2017), a fantastic leather fragrance that is selling quite well.
I tested it today with 3 women close to me and received a “so so” and two “awesome”.
The bottle is quite nice in my opinion and has a very good sprayer.
It opens with a very bold and powerful green fresh vibe, due to the juniper and cypress top notes a just bit tamed by lavender.
The middle notes ensure that this fresh green vibe will endure a bit more due to a very agreeable vétiver a bit softened by Ylang and rose.
The pine and oak moss base notes do grant that this fantastic fragrance remains manly and green till the last sniff.
Its beasty longevity is easily 14+ hours. You may over spray a bit – 4 sprays not more – for a bigger sillage.
Overall I do get a vibe similar to Loewe Esencia. Different frags but evoking the same feelings.
It is indeed a very nice and unique juice.
    My rates

just got a bottle of this love the scent and have smelled this long time ago and have sampled a few times as well. The formulation would have been the older at the time.
My bottle is the new formulation. Still smells as good as ever very strong when applied so be aware of this, To me this is a classic smell and very sophisticated. I go for two sprays and no more with this and will last all day 8-10 hours.
the scent is very much oakmoss and pine type of a scent, slight florals and touch of bergamott. can be worn year round. go light during summer. I needed a a classic manly smell to my wardrobe and this is the one i will keep.

  32. :

This and Eau Sauvage strike me as siblings, the Dior is the citrus brother, and this the evergreen. They lend each other supplemental touches, but they are two sides of the same mature, lightly musky coin.
Both are magnificent aromatics and quite versatile scents great for warm weather but both have the depth for year-round use (or when you want to harken back to warmer times once the colder weather hits). I like both for work or evening use, but in practice they both go very well for casual use as well. Both stick pretty close to the skin after the opening splash, but do project enough to be detectable to those right next to you for 1-2 hours before becoming skin scents.
Love the frosted glass bottle – I think it’s a great choice for warm-weather scents as subconsciously you already feel like you’re cooling yourself off a bit before you apply it.
I have the current reform version, I’d love to get my hands on the original with the pre-restriction wallop of oakmoss.

A work colleague of mine wears the original female 1881 mostly every day and she rocks it really well (I bought it to her for her birthday a couple years ago) and it is always complimented according to her (I too think it smells fantastic).
With this in mind I set out to get the 1881 Pour Homme.
to use an old expression – You can’t beat a classic!
1881 feels old fashioned and yet modern at the same time. This is a far-cry from the fruity bubblegum meterosexual scents of today.
Looking at the notes for this really doesn’t give a true representation of how it smells (to me anyway) as it truly feels like a scent that is blended with no real standout notes.
The opening (only around 30 seconds or so) is slightly harsh to me but soon calms down and becomes fresh, green and strong.
A masculine scent for sure, I would say for a more mature user. However younger guys who are confident, well presented and well mannered could rock this too and would stand out as having a touch of class, 1881 is a cool suave scent but has a sense of authority. Think Roger Sterling in the show Mad Men, a person who’s not afraid to speak his mind but has an underlying gentlemanly charm.
A perfect scent for the spring months.
    Long may it continue

  35. :

    5 out of 5

1881 is clearly a descendant of the classic Signoricci, but with its own distinct take on the green-dry floral-citrus concept. It opens very much like Signoricci, with a fresh dry citrus and green accord. As it develops, 1881 is less astringent, with just a touch of sweetness from the ylang-ylang and black currants balancing the herbal top notes. For a light fragrance of this type it’s surprisingly long-lasting (at least on my skin), and it somehow retains much of the opening freshness along with the basenotes. To me it conjures up images of a bright spring day after a rainstorm, with a mixture of wet grass and leaves, blossoms, and sunshine.
This isn’t a fragrance I wear often, but whenever I do, I’m pleasantly surprised at its tonic effect through the day, and at how nicely balanced and long-lasting it is.

This is the story of one’s 200ml bottle of Cerruti 1881,
Every morning one would apply a generous amount and be off for 9 hours at the office. Good, mature competent cologne!
One kept the bottle of Cerruti 1881 and other colognes along with ones ties and handkerchiefs in a suitcase. On that particular morning, one doused oneself as usual, casually tossed the 200ml bottle back into the suitcase heard the crack then froze! One immediately saw what happened; the 200ml bottle with greater surface area struck a 100 ml bottle. The larger 1881 suffered a clean break, two large pieces plus very few fragments. The juice had lost its home and shape but like any running liquid it adapted quickly, finding spaces between the other cologne bottles, through the ties and handkerchiefs and finally onto the bottom of the suitcase.
One carefully disposed of the broken pieces and cleared out the fragments.
One was left with a fragrant suitcase, a persistent reminder of the sophisticated, crispy, soapy freshness of 1881. One later reflected on the ready availability and friendly price tag of Cerruti 1881, a repeatable purchase no doubt.

Cerruti 1881 Pour Homme (PH) consists of all the notes I would die for including patchouli, oakmoss, sandalwood, cedar, vetiver, and a lovely bouquet of roses with a pinch of citrus for added freshness. If you search for men fragrances based on notes in Fragrantica you will find almost all the bottles share the above notes are from the 70 or 80s era or some of you may regard them as ‘powerhouses’. However, what I love mostly from Cerruti 1881 PH compared to the rest of the ‘powerhouses’ is the notes which are blended so perfectly creating the perfect aroma providing me with that sense of comfort, energy and joy for hours, all seasons round at any given day or night. I do not have to take it easy on the trigger with this one as I have to do with my other powerhouses, it is perfectly safe and office friendly. The sprayer and bottle design are extremely well constructed giving it a solid and attractive feel. If there is one fragrance I would keep in my collection it would have to be this one without a shadow of a doubt.

This was a belter of a scent. I got free sample on its launch. People kept asking me what i was wearing, this was the early 90s. I bought one after having my my 1990;s one, and the modern one is poor comparing it to the old but says something that is still is the one of the best fragrances today. A very classy scent.

I tested this out of curiosity in a high street store. It blew me away. The initial hit is a riot of notes, however, it very quickly settles into a wonderful dry down that’s citrus, spice and wood. Altogether very fresh, clean and pleasant. It isn’t a boisterous, loutish fragrance and it doesn’t fill a room when you enter – absolutely perfect for my purposes.
I’ve read some review comments that suggest this is an old man’s scent. I don’t get that at all. It’s just a most pleasant, inoffensive fragrance that would be appropriate in any setting. It’s probably my current favourite and of all in my wardrobe the one that wowed me most on first sampling.

One of the scent i used to wear when it came out in the 90s and that i loved by the way…i remember it had strong opening and great longevity especially for a summer scent. I decided to buy another bottle after many years without smelling this juice. They sell it at the airports very cheap at the moment…and just to say i didnt even recognise the juice. It s now very weak about 2hrs longevity. The same bad reformulation occured like in eau sauvage that i loved in the 80s…too bad i could not test it as i would not have bought this current 1881 juice. Very dissapointed…

Fresh… with some floral and spice and a nice warm dry down. Lasts well. Reminds me a little of Boucheron and Salvatore Ferragamo.

It is an acquired smell, not for everyone

Underrated gem, very clean and fresh conifer pine dry down, perfect for summer days or nights. Longevity and silage pretty decent.

This scent is fantastic. The only scent that I can think to compare it with that I own, is boucheron. I would say that it leans more towards dry and earthy with the green notes of pine, juniper, and cypress. It is still fresh with the bergamot, and the rose is not to much. It has less of an incense quality than boucheron, yet better in some ways to me. Longevity and sillage are enormous as others have stated. I personally can not stand it on my neck because it chokes me out from the strength. With one spray under my shirt though it is perfect all day and night.
It is a very classy cologne to add to a collection, and the price makes it a steal. I personally think it is suited for all year round, but wear it mostly in the colder months. 🙂

Was my everyday go to fragrance, this opens up incredibly harsh and old fashioned but quickly turns very fresh, lemony and has an incredible drydown. I have a 30 min drive to work and by the time I get there, this is just perfect!
Can be bought incredibly cheaply at present but don’t be put off by the opening or the price, this is great high quality stuff.
I regularly get compliments when I wear this and the longevity and sillage are exceptional.

This is beautiful. It’s an ultra fresh fragrance that has moderate projection and longevity. An ideal Summer juice. An absolute classic in my opinion.

A very pleasant, cool, woody fragrance. Coniferous trees just felled. Silvian freshness without intensive citrus; so for me it speaks of Northern climes. Later more herby and aromatic, slightly spicy, but with no loss of the wood, finally fading to a powdery skin scent.
This is a great (for me more daytime) scent to wear anywhere. You can relax that its pleasant freshness wouldn’t cause anyone to reach to open the windows….
It’s not WOW, unique, groundbreaking “love or hate”, but it’s a really pleasant, clean, masculine fragrance. I actually find it rather uplifting, like a walk in the forest on a cool, fresh day to blow away the concerns of the office, lighten your mood and put everything in perspective.
Sillage normal, ie about right for a daytime scent, lasting about 3 hours on me.

In my opinion this cologne commences with an ineffable harsh smell. It quickly evolves into a brief melody of mossy and masculine- which is the only pleasant part of this piece. Then finally concludes with an odd synthetic smell. It reminds me of Will Smith’s movie “FOCUS” which looks promising in the trailer but delivers nothing special at the end.

Soapy, woods with spices and freshness. I can’t comment on what it ‘once’ was, so I won’t. But to me I’m very happy with how it is now, although I’m intrigued to experience how it might have been. It seems to quickly disappear to my own sense of smell but others have commented on it while I’m wearing it. If you like a clean, soapy fragrance then this ticks all the boxes.

Something about strong juniper smells dated and sad to me… I wish I could like this but I just dont.

One my favorites. Warm, spicy, saddle soapy with sensual resins as a base. A deffo for the older mature man, who oozes sex appeal. YUM! YUM!

It starts harsh and smells like aftershave however it lasts long and the dry down is surprisingly very good. It’s very cheap as well. I picked my 100 ml bottle for just $18.
Don’t come to a conclusion with the opening. For the low price it doesn’t smell synthetic at all. A great fragrance for hot days.
Few mentioned it’s fit only for grandfathers. I totally disagree with that. It’s yet to become dated.

I don’t know how vintage 1881 used to be.. but the new bottle I bought two years ago still contains an amazing juice ! why all the drama ?

It is true that the reformulation destroyed longevity and sillage of this fragrance , as in many others.
    Sillage moderate. Longevity moderate.

Ohhh, at first, it smells kind of floral and sweet to me, but, then dries down to a clean, understanded scent with a ‘saapy, almost cloying’ accord.
All is all, I like it. Don’t love it…, like I used to when I was a lot younger.
funny how your taste change as you get older.
Well, someone here said it smells like “Issy for Men’
Hell No! Much better than that p
